Difficulty changing computer name and domain name

I have a working Xserve with the latest Snow Leopard Server and am having difficulty reconfiguring it from its keyboard.
I would like to edit the computer name and domain name and maintain all other server settings. I would prefer to do this off-line. However Server Admin appears not to work off-line and any attempt to change computer name or domain name removes all server settings from view including the serial number. I can recover everything by reinstating computer name etc and restarting on-line.
Is the serial number tied to the computer name and/or domain name?
Is there any way to retain my existing server settings for a different domain?
Is there any way to progress any of this off-line?

This has now been resolved. This note is to assist others who have the same problem.
1 - I had been changing the computer name in the place I had always done it - System Preferences/Sharing. This confused Server Admin. Reverting to the original name and changing computer name and location within Server Admin resolved the issue. That is System Preferences/Sharing is updated by Server Admin but not vice versa.
2 - Playing with these things can corrupt Server Admin plist resulting in a restarted Server Admin not seeing the edited server even with the server otherwise fully functioning. Trashing Server Admin plist resolved this for me without loss of server settings.
3 - Having set it up off-line I experienced difficulty as soon as I went on-line. This was resolved by changing the server from 'local' to its full domain name. I have no explanation for this as the same settings had previously worked with 'local'.
4 - Server Admin can take a long time to find settings and occasionally failed to do so until after a restart.
The result can be seen here: http://links.open.ac.uk/ - Since Apache refuse to provide hit counter support (there are several public posts of mine on the subject) I use JavaScript to retrieve the count from an old QPQ server running on a G3 with OS 9.

    Hi,
You can use the chgiphost Script in your $ORACLE_HOME/chgip/scripts to change the Domain Name. You can have a look at your Application Server Documentation at this link for detailed instructions :-

  • OAS 10.1.2.3, changing the ip and domain on one machine

    Hello
We are changing the ip and domain of the hardware (hostname remains the same). We have OAS 10.1.2.3 infra, metadata repository (created with MRCA), middle tier on one and the same machine on Aix 5300-10 (I know you are wondering at this). Middle tier is of the Business Intelligence and Forms type. I'm not sure of the procedure. Also the new metadata repository which has to be created, because changing the domain name of identity management with metadata repository according to administrator's guide is not supported, will be on the same machine.
    Should I follow this procedure:
    (1) Deregister the metadata repository from OID with MRCA.
    (2) Change the domain dame and the ip of the identity management.
    (3) Create a new metadata repository and register it with OID.
    (4) Upgrade the metadata repository to 10.1.2.3.
    (5) Install a new middle tier 10.1.0.2 to use the identity management which is on 10.1.2.3
    (6) Upgrade the middle tier to 10.1.2.3.
Or is there a simpler supported way of changing the ip&domain when everything is all the time only on one machine. If not, is there something not mentioned here which should be taken into account when following the procedure above.
    I'd much appreciate a comment.
    Best Regards

For midtier is script chgiphost.sh for infra this one doesn'w work cause only let you change IP I belive.
I think you can try to make a new installation backing up your users from ldap (SSO-OID) and import them to the new installation and try to re-assign the midtiers to the new infra.
    Greetinges.

    Thanks.
    Regard,
Kenneth.tnsnames.ora is used only by client processes. listner.ora is used only to configure the listener, and that is a server side issue only. In addition, the listener can start without any listener.ora at all, using all default values. See my discussion of tns issues at edstevensdba.wordpress.com
If you are using dbcontrol, you will most likely need to reconfigure it, using the emca utility.

  • Noob ? How change computer name

I've Googled my brains out and can't find the answer, and I did RTFM. But still can't figure out how to change the name in name column of the computer list.
When I add them the name appears as the IP address on some, as the full DNS name on some, and as the regular text name (e.g. Bill's Computer) on others. For the life of me, I can't find any way to change the one's with IP address to names.
    Anyone know how?

The ones with IP address are users that probably don't even know they can name their machine, much less where top do it.
Shouldn't the IT department be the ones who name the computers, so as to keep them conformed to a standard naming convention? Are the systems not installed from a master image, all preconfigured? Sounds like bad computer management.
Regardless, changing the DNS name in the ARD admin app can be done by right clicking on any client and choosing Get Info.
However this will not change the DNS entry for the computer on your DNS server.

how to change the computer name in mountain lion -  the name is greyed out and the lock is unlocked. I am in the admin account.

    OK, check this one:
    /Library/Preferences/System/Configuration/preferences.plist
and see if it's locked. If not, try moving that file out to the desktop. You'll need to reset a number of preferences, but that seems to be where OS X 10.8 is keeping that setting now.

  • Oracle XE on Windows 7 laptop. Changed computer name, now cannot connect

I run Oracle XE on my laptop with Windows 7. I just changed my computer name and rebooted. Now I cannot connect to the Oracle XE database at all. I found references to the old computer name in the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files under C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN.
Is there any other file I need to update in order for the change to work?
    Thanks!
    François

Is the database running? (check near the bottom of alert_xe.log, was the last startup OK ... )
Other than the updated host = <hostname> in listener.ora and TNS alias that should be all the updates that are needed, as long as your <hostname> resolves to the right TCP address, and a reverse lookup on the TCP address shows the new hostname, as a double check it try these in a command box (dunno about win7 if the nslookup is in the winnetworking or maybe something different? hosts?) ...
    $ ipconfig /all
    Host Name .. : <hostname>
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    ... IP[v4?] Address: <your TCP/IP address>
    $ nslookup <hostname>
    ... <your TCP/IP address>

  • 10.5.3 problem with changing computer name

Having an issue with computer naming after 10.5.3. Here is the issue:
    New Leopard install, fresh
Installed all updates, including the 10.5.3 update
Change the computer name in System Preferences\Sharing
The new name is reflected in Computer Name field
The new name is also reflected as the Local Hostname under Edit
    Rebooted the machine
Look at System Preferences\Sharing\Service and none of the services reflect the new computer name\local hostname, the old computer name is listed for each service
Click on the Edit button and deleted the Local Hostname, left it blank and clicked OK
Now the new Local Hostname is listed for each service
Open a Terminal window and the old computer name is listed at the prompt
    Reboot the machine
Open a Terminal window and the old computer name is listed at the prompt
Not being a Unix guru, I assume there may be a way to modify the computer name some other way than through the GUI. I sure hope so cause the new patch that was supposed to fix an issue with computer names appears to have created a new bug.

    - First import of 40GB of photos, left to run overnight
    - When trying to use this morning, Aperture screens were corrupt and it refused to shut down. I had to power off then boot back into Mac OS X. When I restarted Aperture it worked, but it still seemed to have problems taking over the machine - eg, I wasn't able to send mail from Gmail within VMWare Fusion until I closed down Aperture. I never have problems with VMWare Fusion.

  • Change computer name using partial serial number

I'm starting to learn Powershell and I'm stuck trying to automate a computer name change. The code below works to rename the computer and reboot but I would like to shorten it and I'm not sure how. The serial number is 15 characters which makes the computer
name with the prefix added 18 charactes long. How can I modify it so that it takes the last 10 of the serial number plus the prefix? We are using Powershell 4.
The script changes the name to something like MCT1234567890ABCDE
What I would like is MCT67890ABCDE
    $serial = Get-WmiObject win32_bios | select -expand serialnumber
    $newname = "MCT" + $serial
    Rename-Computer -NewName $newname -Force -Restart

    Hi,
The serial number is 15 characters which makes the computer name with the prefix added 18 charactes long.
You might run into problems with this, considering there's a 15 character limit on NetBIOS names:

  • Time machine backups not visible-changed computer name

I found that I could not access any of the Time Machine back ups. I checked and the computer name had an apostrophe in it, also spaces. I changed the computer name to remove those and used ASCII characters only. The was yesterday evening. I still can't see any of the backups, although I've heard the hard drive I use for TM running a couple of times since then.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?

I do not see the backups thru Finder or thru the TM browser. I can get into the Time Machine browser, but the only time period displayed is today. The arrows to move backward and forward don't do anything and the bars along the right side are not labeled with dates or time as they should be. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Can't change computer name in Sharing because of old Vista install?

I have a strange problem (all of mine seem to be strange).
I am attempting to set up the four computers I have at home for file sharing - nothing too complicated. There is one iMac connected via WiFi, one PC running Vista via ethernet, one MacBook running 10.4.11 via WiFi, and the problem machine my MacBook Pro running 10.5.6.
Under the Sharing preferences for my MacBook Pro, the computer name is set correctly to "Nebuchadnezzar". However, under the File Sharing details, the address is set to afp://MacBookProVista.home/.
I previously installed Vista under Boot Camp, and set the computer name under Vista to this name, so that I could identify it on my network. But I have removed this partition the correct way. I also had a Linux and a Windows 7 install running on virtual machines but I have removed both of these as well.
Why (and how) has Leopard managed to get hold of the Vista computer name, and why hasn't it gone away after I deleted the entire Vista partition? I managed to get the address to change very briefly when I changed the Global Dynamic Hostname to Nebuchadnezzar, but it since changed back after closing System Prefs.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Message was edited by: pisto_grih
Also, the Remote Management name is MacBookProVista rather than the correct name of Nebuchadnezzar.

I don't know if this is normal, but resetting my router seemed to clear these erroneous network names. I have a BT HomeHub (v2.0) and when you reset it and reconnect the machines to the network, as it resets the IP through DHCP it resets the "afp://" address to the computers MAC address.
As part of setting up the network, each device is getting a static IP - it appears in the device list as the devices MAC address, and renaming it here seems to do the trick.
I find this strange (and slightly confusing) that the naming of devices goes both ways, from device to router and back again, but it seems to be working. The Vista device name was obviously picked up when I connected it to the network, but it's strange that it didn't reset through DHCP, even though the name on the router came up correctly.

  • How to Change Computer Name

Two questions...the first is to find out how to change the name of a computer. When I pulled data of of my previous Mac, the name stuck onto the new one.
Secondly...an old email address keeps popping up in my keychain. Anyway to get in and delete that?
    Thanks for any help.

I recently added another iPhone to the Mac inventory and up initializing, it asked if I wanted to make a certain email address my default. I've not used that address for quite a while. I've seen this address pop up a couple other places too, so I'm wanting to retire it for good.
Thanks for you help on the first question.

    from renata:~ REN$
    to kate:~ REN$
but you can only see this change in terminal. But what I think it might be doing is whoever had the IP address before my computer it is taking there computer name(PC) and assigning it to my mac G4.
