Difficulty connecting to printer attached to Windows XP computer

I'm trying to connect over the network to a printer which is attached to one of my computers running Windows XP SP2. I opened the Printer Setup Utility and clicked "Add", then "More Printers" I selected "Windows Printing", and "Network Neighborbood", but my workgroup is not appearing. The default workgroup "Workgroup" appears, but my computers are all using the workgroup "MSHOME". I took a screenshot:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/palehose/printers.png
Anyone know what might be causing this? I'm using a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz running OSX 10.4.6.

Are you sure? I was looking at the summary for this program and it appears to be something that allows a PC to find printers connected to Macs:
With Bonjour for Windows, your PC can easily discover printers, web servers, and the many other devices that support Bonjour service discovery.
I need to do just the opposite.

  • Can't Print to printer attached to Windows XP Computer

Be kind, since I'm new to Mac computing. I have a Canon Pixma iP5000 printer connected to a Windows XP computer via USB. I am wirelessly connected to everything via a Linksys wireless G router. I set up the printer using the printer setup utility. When I try to print, the printer led flashes once, but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

To use any of the built-in network printing protocols on OS X, you must either have a postscript printer (postscript printers don't require a driver, just a PPD), or a driver that works with the CUPS system (a CUPS driver). So far, Brother is the only non-postscript printer manufacturer that provides CUPS drivers. For every other non-postscript printer, you need a third-party CUPS driver. Apple tried to get around this issue by including Gimp-Print drivers (open source CUPS drivers), but your model isn't in the bundled version of Gimp-Print.
For the iP5000, the only CUPS driver I know of is from www.printfab.net

My Mac won't share the printer to my windows 7 computer. Worked fine with Snow Leopard but with Lion it won't print from my computer. It also won't connect with file sharing anymore. Any solution that may help please? Thank You

You can get Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • OfficeJet 8500 Printer attached to Windows XP system via USB prints partial pages

I have an OfficeJet 8500 printer stationed at the desk of one of my users and is attached to her Windows XP system with a USB cable.  The printer has started to print partial pages and will not complete a full page of text or images, color or black and white.
I have attempted to reset the printer by removing power from the printer via the power cord, and holding # and 6 while turning the printer on (after reconnecting the power cord, of course).  The alignment process took place after this procedure, but it has not resolved the issue.
I have not yet upgraded the firmware from what was installed at the factory.
What might I do?  What am I missing?  Do I need to upgrade the installed driver on the system?  Is the printer able to be salvaged?  It doesn't appear to be hardware, as the portions which print are perfect; I just don't get the entire page.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

The USB to parrallel cable will work just find if you don't mind plugging in the laptop to the printer when required. If you want to modify Win XP to be able to print to an AppleTalk printer follow the instructions below.
"To install AppleTalk protocol to Windows XP
Required files: (Get them from any system running Windows 2000 Professional or Server)
    netatlk.inf, sfmatalk.sys, sfmmon.dll, sfmatmsg.dll, sfmwshat.dll, sfmpsprt.dll
If they can not be found you need to unhide hidden and system files.
Copy the files to their respective places:
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\INF\netatlk.inf
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\sfmatalk.sys
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmatmsg.dll
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmmon.dll
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmwshat.dll
    C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRTPROCS\W32X86\sfmpsprt.dll
AppleTalk Protocol should now be available under the list of Protocols you can add in Network Connections - Local Area Connections Properties
This is only good using AppleTalk printers attached to the network. The AppleTalk printer will show up, if it's turned on, under Add Printer-Local printer attached to this computer - create a new port - AppleTalk Printing devices.
For more info see: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/s agadd_appletalkport.mspx (you do not need to capture the port for the printer to work)
If you can not get access to these files, make your email address visable in your user profile and I will send them to you."

  • Printing trough a printer attached to Windows

    Hy,
I'd like to print trough a HP printer attached to a Windows Home SP2. When I go to system preferences he can see the network and the printer where it is attached to, but if I click on the network it asks me to "connect as" Guest or User, I've tried guest an User with the Username from the Pc (no password) and then tried with a password (changed it on the PC). To connect to SMB shares, I don't need a password or Username, what must I enter in the box "Username" and "Password" do I need to set up anything to the network?
My network (SMB) name is: casaclavel
    My Macbook name : TheM4inframe
    Thanks in Advance,
    TheM4inframe
PS sorry for my bad English

I have the same problem. I have a windows desktop computer running XP which has an HP PSC 1315 connected to it via USB and I am trying to use my MacBook to the printer via the home network. After trying several things, my MacBook won't let me install it. Any ideas?

  • Printing problem on laser printer attached to Windows XP

    Hi,
I am trying to print a test page on Samsung ML-2510 laser printer connected and shared on Win XP. I have a green dot for this printer in Print & Fax on Mac, all looks cool. But I get the message 'On Hold (Authentication required) with red circle in printer status window on Mac. When I hit 'resume printing of selected jobs' it asks me to enter username and password for XP. I do, I hear the printer starting to print something but no page is printed. I have no problems using this printer from other XP machines.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

THIS WORKS, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
I just purchased a vista home premiun computer and was having the same issue making my hp 5150 printer work through a networked xp system that the printer is physically attached to..It now works.. procedure= ( on the vista computer ) remove all old printers and printer drivers from previous attempts.
Go to this address and download this driver http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?os=2093&softwareitem=dj-46093-3&lc=en&cc=us...  HP_Vista_SF_Ph1.exe ,,click on it and let it install. when it ask if installing a local or network printer  (choose network ) continue install. It may tell u the drivers may not install properly, ( install anyway ) It may again tell you the drivers did not install correctly ( do not fix just keep them installed incorrectly ) now leave the print test page window open.
Go to add printer wizard and install new printer ( network printer ) add a local port and type EXACTLY the same path to the xp based printer EXAMPLE= \\lisajunk\printer .....finish wizard and print test page...
I done nothing to the xp computer, my printer and drivers work good on my other networked computers which use xp operating system.
I believe creating the correct port and having the correct path on the vista machine is the key to making this work. I use xp pro SP1 on an old antique 400mhz gateway that my printer is physically attached to.. You need to make sure the printer is being shared on the machine it is physically attached too.

  • Printing attached to windows workstation - can't print from mac

    Here is my setup:
I am trying to print to a Canon MF6500 printer attached via USB to a Windows XP Pro computer in a Windows 2003 SBS environment. I enabled Unix printing, set the printer up for sharing and installed the Mac driver on my computer. I went to "add printer," then "windows printing" and found the workstation with the target printer, however nothing was available to select.
I then added the printer to the server hoping that I could just share it from the server, but I got the same result - no printers to add.
So as a last ditch effort, I installed the 3rd party App DAVE. I opened the "Dave Printers List" and it actually found the printer, but I could not find the driver now. The Canon driver is in the list of drivers (as I can see it when searching for Bonjour/appletalk printers), but not there when searching for other printers. So I can add the printer, but I can only use a generic print driver.
Anyway, here is my question: How do I add the printer without using DAVE (if possible) with it's correct driver? If not possible, how do I add the printer using the correct driver with DAVE? Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Thanks

have you resolved your problem? Please forward me any tips that you may have received.
I have a new iMac with OS X V 10.4.10 - all software is up to date.
I have a HP OJ 7680 linked into my airport network through Bonjur. When I try to print, Word (and all other applications) tell me to select a printer, I select the HP OJ 7680 (designated as a Bonjur printer) and my iMac instantly tries to install the printer. After about 5 - 10 minutes the install fails.
Where can I get help on this? Doesn't apple offer any on-line or phone customer service?

  • 2008 R2 printer server, cannot connect to printer, access denied, Windows 7 OS only

Deployed new Windows 2008 R2 domain controller, added print and document controll. Added several network printers on R2 server. We currently have mostly Vista biz clients but half a dozen W7Pro clients also. The Vista clients connect to these new network
printers, no problem but none of the W7 clients will connect. I select the printer from the drop down directory list and select to load the drivers, the system starts loading drivers and then right before it finishes it stops with error message, "Windows cannot
connect to the printer. Access denied. Again, this happens only with the W7 clients on our domain, Vista works fine.

By default, the security settings for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 allow users who are not members of the local
Administrators group to install only trustworthy printer drivers, such as those provided with Windows or in digitally signed printer-driver packages. You may want to install printer-driver packages on the print server
or in the clients. More details can be found this page: Cannot

  • Can't print to printer attached to Windows 7 machine

When I send a document from my MacBook to the printer attached to my Windows 7 desktop, it shows up on the print queue as a document but lags and shows as "spooling". I have yet to get this to work. I successfully networked the computers together for file sharing and whatnot, but printing refuses to work. Like I said, the documents make it to the print queue, but won't actually print.
Router is Linksys WRT54G2 firmware version 1.0.04
    printer is Cannon MP240
Mac OS is Snow Leopard version 10.6.4
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if a suggestion doesn't work, thanks for taking the time to reply!

To print to a Canon inkjet when it is being shared by a Windows computer, you need to use a CUPS-based driver such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. Note that the Canon drivers cannot be used - even the versions that have CUPS in their name.
Gutenprint is the preferred driver as it is free however the MP240 is too new and is currently not listed as a supported model. So you could look at using a different Canon model, such as the MP220 or some users have found the MP150 to work for their non-supported model.
If you cannot get any of the alternate Canon models to work correctly then you could try [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net>. There is a 30 day trial available so you can check that it works before paying the €49. Also your MP240 is listed as a supported model.

  • Print from a mac to a printer attached to windows

After installing Leopard I lost the ability to print to a printer attached (wired) to a PC in my home office. My MacPro is wireless and has no trouble finding the network I have set up to enable printer sharing. When I was running Tiger there was no problem getting this to work. I remember going into Printer Browser and selecting the workgroup MSHOME or something else. Everything seems fine in System Preferences. Under Printer & Faxes my Epson printer is showing and I have downloaded the latest Epson Drivers. All printing goes into the queue and never hits the actual printer. Please help.

I found a series of articles under Apple Mac OS X: Cannot locate a shared Windows printer. The first article said a remote printer must have 12 or less characters. That opened the door to the solution. The rest of the material was also useful. I can now print remotely.
Who would have thought that Apple would have been limited to 12 characters for a printer. Thta's the stuff you expect form Microsoft.

  • Difficulty Connecting to WiFi From A Windows XP Based System.

Hello, this is my first post on the Apple Forums and also my first forums post using my new MacBook.
I got my MacBook from a official Apple distributer from my Polytechnic. I am required to have a MacBook in my course there, so the school has this distributer come over and sell them at discounted prices. The MacBook I bought was a Early 2008 model and the only issue I have with it is connecting to the internet. Surfing the internet is fine, apart from losing the connection a few times.
Quite often when I turn on my MacBook and log in, a screen pops up saying none of my preferred networks are available. Funny thing is my preferred network appears on the screen and I have to select my preferred network and use a 26 character password, which is thankfully saved in my keychains.
Now the problem is the connecting to the preferred network. I want my computer to do this automatically when it starts. The second, but bigger problem is that sometimes I can't connect. The computer will try for like 2 or 3 seconds and say connection timed out! I need more than 2 or 3 seconds to connect. Sometimes it says security failed.
The only way for me to get on is to keep trying sometimes more than 10 times!
my third problem is also frustrating. Whenever I close my MacBook to move it, my Messenger signs out and it takes forever to sign in!
None of the other computers in my home, using the same WiFi network are having any trouble. I am beggining to worry if my MacBook has a faulty WiFi. If this is so, it can get it replaced within 7 working days.
This is my first Mac and I want it to work perfectly.
    Problems:
    1) Won't automatically connect to preferred network.
    2) Difficulty connecting to internet over WiFi from a Windows XP based system.
    3) Windows Live Messenger logs out whenever I close my MacBook.
    Hardware Involved:
1)Early 2008 MacBook, 2.4ghz, 2 gigs RAM, Leopard (Not updated, just the one pre-installed on my MacBook.)
    2)Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router
Any help will be much appreciated.

    1) Yep, thats been done. This problem seems to have been solved. It was an issue yesterday, but since turned on my MacBook today morning, I haven't had any issues.
    2) The Security Setting is WEP Password. Sorry I wasn't clear about the "WiFi From Windows XP." I'm not too tech savvy when it comes to networking, but my router is connected to a Windows XP PC. This PC is directly connected to the internet. In my house there is also an my MacBook, an iMac and Windows XP Laptop. Am I making any sense hehe?
    3) I checked the Energy Saver, but I cannot find the option that allows me to keep my internet on while the MacBook is closed. Nothing at all. Right now, I have set my MacBook to High Performance while its plugged into a socket and its on Better Battery Life while using batteries.
Thank you so much for the help bdkjones.

  • Can't connect Airport wifi to my Windows 7 computer.

I just set up an Airport, and I connected my iPad, android phone, and printer with no problem, but when I try to connect my Windows 7 Laptop, I get a message that the settings saved on the computer don't match the network. What do I have to do to connect?

This could be caused by two separate issues. If you are getting the "the settings saved on the computer don't match the network" without being promted for a password by the windows 7 laptop then you will need to follow the steps located  here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/remove-stored-passwords-certificates -and-other-credentials
You can also try creating another user for the window 7 computer. More info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4755

  • Trying to use wireless printing on a windows 8 computer

Everything I have is Apple, and working great with my Airport Extreme.  My wife, however, has a windows 8 computer.  I sold her on the wireless printing as a reason to get the sweet new Apple Airport Extreme.
    Problem:
Research leads me to believe that I have to download and use Bonjour, which I have done.  Bonjour detects an HP printer, but cannot find the appropriate driver.  The actual printer is not supplied as a way to choose a driver.  It is only given as a series number, which doesn't match the printer (ex: Deskjet f4400 series, hers is f380).  I think everything would work just fine if I could locate the proper driver within bonjour.  Also, her computer doesn't have a disk drive to use and it prints fine while connected by usb directly.
    Hardware)))Windows 8 64-bit)))Airport Extreme)))HP F380 All-in-one.
If there is any info that I am not including please tell me and I will try to add.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
