Difficulty in moving files onto desk top in yosemite

Yosemite is great except I can not drag files from a desktop folder onto the desktop
anyone else with this issue??

Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

Open a Finder window, and your external drive should show up in the sidebar, under "Devices".
A different way is to go to Finder menu (in the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External disks". If your external drive is detected by OS X, it will show up at the top right corner of Desktop, so double-click it to access to the content.

  • Locked file on desk top

    Hi,
I had a locked file in the trash and thought i'd drag it out to the desk top and delete the other stuff in there. Well it duplicated itself and I cant get rid of it (BBEdit html file)
command i and unlock the little lock doesn't help.
Used option empty to finally empty the trash. Help says I should try this little operation:
    1. Start in single-user mode; for instructions see Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode.
    2. Type this, followed by Return: mount -uw /
    3. Type this, followed by Return:
    cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    4. Type this, on a single line, followed by Return:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool true
    5. Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc
    6. Wait for the on screen text to stop scrolling and then press Return
    7. Type this, followed by Return:
    find / -flags schg -exec chflags noschg {} \;
    8. Once this is finished, type this followed by Return:
    rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount.plist
    9. Type this followed by Return: reboot
I find this to be a tad on the cute side. Beside needing to type that much with no errors, how do people remember it?
Is there a place to store things so you can find them in single user mode?
    Thanks,
    Garrett

drag the file to the desktop. Open the Terminal app. Type the following:
    sudo rm
Make sure there's a space after the rm Then drag the file in question to the Terminal window. Hit Enter. Insert your admin password at the prompt and the file is gone.

  • Pages won't open files on desk top

I have a Pages document on desktop. It will not open and the following message appears. However I have the latest version of Pages, if I use ctrl click I can choose the application and work on the document, I can save and close the doc but still can't open it again fron desk top.
Is this a problem unique to me or is it an Apple bug? If so is it being fixed?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Excel files from desk top to Palm Centro

    Hello all,
Please be patient with me as I am NEW to this wonderful world of phone applictions... Last phone I had only had 3 numbers :0)
I am trying to down load an excel file from my desk top (Windows xp home) to my palm centro... I registered the software on the phone (AT&T service and Dataviz) and am able to open the excel sheet on the phone...
    Please help???
    Thank you!
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

if i may understood your problem correctly, you are trying to transfer excel files from your PC to your phone.
    1. open docs to go 10 in the PC via programs folder or icon in the desktop
    2. please check the username in the upperhand corner of the application
    3. if the username is correct, you will have your documents listed in the window
    4. those documents are from your phone
    5. if you want to add documents from your PC, just look the green (+) plus sign.
    6. click that plus sign because that will enable you to add documents from your PC, the minus sign is for removing files from the list that you can see.

  • Please help! I have moved files onto my nokia via ...

I dwnloaded some themes for an Ericsson and the file is .thm now since i have lost the cable for the ericsson i just copied the .thm files onto the nokia, i've tried in all the different folders and what not and when i look onto the phone to send via bluetooth to the ericsson they'r not there!! it's making me very angry, does anyone know of any program that i can dwnload so that the nokia realises the files are there.

Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones have completely different operating systems, themes for one are not compatible with the other just the same as you can't run Mac software on a PC.
Most online theme providers offer downloads for a variety of models, you just have to download the file specific to your phone.

  • Accidently moved folder from files to desk top, now nothing is working in the program.

accidently moved the program from the folder and now none of the plug ins are working, even though I moved it back. What can I do? I dont want to have to uninstall and wait 5 hours for it to reinstall*

What folder did you move and where did you move it back too?  Also which operating system are you using?

  • HT4413 Time Machine- moving files onto a new mac- compatibility issues?

If you use Time Machine to load files from a mac running snow leopard to a new mac running lion, will everything work normally in lion thereafter on the new mac? It won't try to revert the new computer to snow leopard, will it?
Also, I want to clear off the old computer once I do this (an 2008 Snow Leopard macbook) so my sister can use it for basic internet, etc. What is the best way to do this?
Last question: I have a 2008 Microsoft Office Suite program that I installed in 08 on the macbook. It came with 3 access codes total, and I split it 3 ways with 2 roomies and we each have one access code. If the office is uninstalled on this old computer and I try reinstalling it on the new one, can I use the same code as before or will it think that I am trying to use the same code on two computers? I don't need the program on the old computer anymore and just want to "switch" it to the new one.
Thanks so much for any ideas!

No, it can't revert Lion to Snow Leopard.
Your user data and preferences should be transferred without problem.
Applications, if you elect to copy them over, may need updates to work in Lion.
Some applications won't work at all - those written for use on earlier PPC Macs (the G3, G4, G5 series) won't run at all. That includes Appleworks, Office versions before 2008, and some Adobe Products.
You'll need to replace those applications with compatible current ones that can open the files created in them.

Boot from your grey installer DVD disc 1 (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present). From the installer screen, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
    Do not click 'Continue' yet!
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.). Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
    This next step is optional;
When that's finished, select the new volume in the sidebar (indented to the right below the drive) and go to the Erase tab, select Security options and select zero data (one pass is more than sufficient). Click erase. That will take quite some time; probably measured in hours and dependant on the size of the drive.
(The purpose of this step is to ensure there is no recoverable data left on the drive).
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
When installation is complete, after the restart ignore the setup assistant and shut down the Mac (you may have to do this by holding down the power button).
The Mac is now ready for the new owner to personalise it as if new.
Be sure to pass on the original grey discs with the Mac, and the SL retail disc if you loaded SL.
You can use the Snow Leopard retail disc instead of the grey discs, but you won't be asked to load disc 2 and the iLife software on it in that case. If you use the grey discs first, you can simply follow up by installing SL over the top to upgrade the system files. It won't affect anything else (leave out the partition and erase steps of course!)

Sorry, you need to ask in the MS or Office forums for that.

  • Opening backed up file on desk top

I downloaded the desktop software yesterday in order to back up the info from my 9330 Curve.  I want to retrieve a text conversation in it's entirety and print it instead of sending each segment to my e-mail account.  When I click on the icon in my documents  the computer doesn't know how to open the file, whether to use windows word etc..  What do I check when I browse the list of possibilities?  Am I going to be able to view all of my texts when the file eventually opens? I have saved each message.
If not is there another way to obtain an entire text conversation other than e-mailing each segment to my e-mail?

    Hello,
The only application that can read the Backup (*.IPD) file is the BlackBerry Desktop Software. The only device that can use the backup file (database information) is a BlackBerry device with the BlackBerry operating system loaded  or a virtual device.
Not saying there isn't a 3rd party application that was created to do so, but none that are supported by RIM
Google "how to open blackberry backup file" and you may find something plus spyware -.-

I accidently droped an MP3 file onto the top of the finder. Now there is a little file up by the minimize button. When I click on it it opens the file, but I don't know how to make it go away.
I'm a new convert from the PC world but enjoying things for the most part. Thanks

Press the Command key, click on it, and drag it out of the toolbar, or control-click it and choose to remove it.

  • Where would I look on desk top computer for back ups from iPad that tech helped me back up to try to fix my iPad?  Apple replaced my iPad but I can't find any of my photos.  Tech told me they would be on my desk top. Can u help me? Thank, MEC

Where would I look to find my back ups from my iPad onto desk top computer?  The tech. Who helped me try to repair my iPad helped me back them off the iPad onto desk top. Apple had to send new replacement iPad.  Tech told me the back ups would be on my desk top but I can't find them.  I have lost all my photos.  Can anyone please tell me where to look?  Thanks, Marti48

I think that the tech probably meant that your photos would be in the backup. If he helped you backup your iPad on your computer, then you have to restore from the backup in order to recover your photos.
Did you bring your computer with you when you got this help from the tech backing up your iPad, or did he talk you through this over the phone?

  • On Lion OS why do new icons not appear on the desk top either from drag and drop of scanning onto

There seems to be an error on Lion OS which I installed recently. If you drag files onto the desk top they disappear. However, they can be found in finder. If you scan direct to the desk top they also do not appear. Is there a bug?

Sounds to me like you have a corrupt plist file.
First thing I would try would be to simply relaunch your Finder and see if that sorts your problem.
    >ForceQuit>Finder>Relaunch
If not navagate to com.apple.desktop.plist and delete.
    Finder>GO>(option Key)Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
or in Finder shortcut ( ⇧⌘G) copy and paste:
    ~/Library/Preferences/
    delete the com.apple.desktop.plist
    Relaunch your Finder again.
The deleted plist will rebuild itself to default setting after Finder relaunch
Report back on your sucess or failure.

  • Hi, my iphoto had a transparent ? mark on it and wouldn't open so I dragged it onto the desk top and now it has disappeared... I cannot find it anywhere in my finder, it seems to be gone, please help!

Hi, my iphoto had a transparent ? mark on it and wouldn't open so I dragged it onto the desk top and now it has disappeared... I cannot find it anywhere in my finder, it seems to be gone, please help!

You have one and possibly two problems.
First problem you tried to open the iPhoto library with iTunes and appeared to have set iTunes as the default app for iPhoto Libraries. That isn;t going to work.
To fix that select the iPhoto library in the Finder and do a File->Get Info. In the middle of the Info window you'll see Open With dropbox. Click on that and select iPhoto, then select the Change All button
This will get iPhoto back as the default app to open iPhoto Libraries.
Double click the library now and if nothing else is wrong iPhoto will open the library. If it does do as Michael wrote and go to the Applications folder and drag iPhoto to the dock to remake the shortcut.
However since you started this thread by saying that the iPhoto shortcut in the dock had a question mark on it it is possible that iPhoto is missing from your Applications folder. If it is post back.
    regards
