Difficulty navigating to and identifying my RAW and JPEG Images

Hi,
I have several related issues that I would appreciate help with.
I am finding difficulty navigating to and identifying my RAW and JPEG images in Aperture. I do actually principally work with JPEG and only use RAW when I perceive there to be a benefit by improving a poorly captured image.
To give you some background.  I am using an iMac OSX 10.8.3 and Aperture 3.4.3 Camera Raw 4.04. When I Import images I import both RAW and JPEG using RAW as the original.
At the Import stage both RAW and JPEG thumbnails are displayed. However once imported only one thumbnail is displayed in the Library on some occasions this will be the JPEG and on other occasions the RAW (as identified from the Info tab. How can I select which version to work with?
I would appreciate assistance with this.
Regards,
John

It is possible to see the Raw master along side the Jpg master if you wish.
When a version is created (make new version from original) it is created off the original that is currently selected. So if the jpg image is the current original all versions created will be made off the jpg image. Likewise if the raw is the current original all versions created will be made off the raw image.
Also keep in mind that a version that has no adjustments applied to it is identical to the original it was made from.
So to get both along side each other do:
Set raw as original, create new version from original. Label this version Raw original version. Now switch to jpg as original. Make a version from this and label it Jpg original version.
Just ensure you never apply adjustments to these two images and you will always have both the jpg and raw images available to compare.
In addition if say the jpg is the original and you want to make a version from the raw, instead of switching the jpg and raw you can just go to the Raw original version and duplicate it.

  • Saving from bridge and converting from raw to jpeg

    why can I not convert from raw to jpeg in bridge (camera raw) and save to a location different from the  original

    Yep sure can.
    In bridge select your picture(s) then edit in camera raw.
    In camera raw look in the bottom left of the camera raw dialog box and you will see a save as button.
    This will allow you to save your raw files as jpg, tiff or pngs.

  • Canon XSi and aperture, both RAW and jpg viewing?

    I just got the Canon 450D and using Canon utility I see both the RAW and jpg pics import next to each other when I shoot in in the RAW and jpg mode. But I import to Aperture and I seem to only see one of them, the RAW one, not the jpg one. Is there a setting for this or am I missing something?
    Thanks

    Just right click and choose new version from master JPG.

  • 64 channel 1450 Hz data logging with PCI-6033E card, on-line averaging and viewing the raw and averaged signal in CWGraphs.

    I'm acquiring 64 channels at sampling rate of about 1450kHz continuously and showing the data second by second in a CWGraph. Now, I would like to add an on-line averaging for all of those 64 channels and show it in another CWGraph. The averaging should occur with respect of external trigger and the sample should consist of about 100ms prestimulus and 500ms poststimulus period. Has anybody been handling this sort of things? How it's solved with ComponentWorks and Visual Basic?
    I'm using double Pentium 700MHz processors and NI-DAQ PCI-6033E card.

    1. To get started with external triggering check out the examples in the Triggering folder that install with CW under MeasurementStudio\VB\Samples\DAQ\Triggering.
    2. Create a prestimulus buffer that always contains the latest 100 ms of data. Just modify the CWAI1_AcquiredData event to transfer ScaledData (the data acquired) to your prestimulus buffer. See how there will always be a prestimulus buffer of data regardless of trigger state?
    3. On the trigger, you can use the same CWAI1_AcquiredData event to route the data into poststimulus buffer and average the 2.
    I see something like this:
    if no trigger
    100 ms of data to prestimulus buffer
    if trigger
    500 ms of data to poststimulus buffer
    averaging and display function
    reset trigger and buffers

  • How to load and display a byte array (jpeg) image file dynamically in Flex?

    My web service client (servlet) received a binary jpeg data from an Image Server. The Flex application invokes the
    servlet via HttpService and receives the binary jpeg data as byte array.  How could it be displayed dynamically
    without writing the byte array to a jpeg file?  Please help (some sample code is very much appreciated).

    JPEGEncoder is only useful for converting BitmapData to ByteArray, not the other way around.
    By the way JPEGEncoder and PNGEncoder are part of the Flex SDK now, so no need to use AS3Lib (alltough it's a good library to have around).
    To display/use a ByteArray as image, use a Loader instance with the loadBytes method.
        Loader.loadBytes(bytes:ByteArray, context:LoaderContext = null);
    Listen for the complete event on the Loader.contentLoaderInfo and get the BitmapData in the event handler.
    private function loadJpeg():void {
        var loader:Loader = new Loader();
        loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loaderCompleteHandler);
        //jpgBA is the ByteArray loaded from webservice
        loader.loadBytes(jpgBA);
    private function loaderCompleteHandler(evt:Event):void {
        var t:LoaderInfo = evt.currentTarget as LoaderInfo;
        // display the jpeg in an Image component
        img.source = t.content;
    <mx:Image id="img" scaleContent="false" />

  • Why does my converted raw to jpeg image have an arrow pointing to it?

    When I have taken a raw image through the camera raw edit and then to full edit in elements 10 and then post the converted image onto my desk top to then move elsewhere why does it show up with an arrow pointing to the image and why am I unable to use it unless I send it to iphoto first? See screen shot of photo of woman with arrow pointing to it.  What does this mean?

    Presumably you have a desktop folder or desktop pictures folder. Go directly to the folder containing the jpeg.
      You can set-up Elements as your external editor in iPhoto settings.

    Currently not... any time you life you are always going to get the full set of metadata from an image, so even making a template image without the metadata that always gets included would not help much I think.

  • Alternate idea for XMP storage and issue over RAW-JPG pairs.

    I'm think that maybe what needs to happen here is not necessarily having the JPEGs show in LR, but when they are present that they are used as the Sidecars to the RAWs for storing the Metadata for both, instead of having a third file, ie XMP sidecars.
    Now for me, my camera does not produce both together, so LR would do the current XMP sidecars, but for others it would use the JPEGs instead, and update them for the preview. Also, if desired, by option show them in a stack with the RAWs. I think this would be much the best option for many that Adobe could provide.

    hi all,
    as a professional photojournalist i am with you rory. the fact that i can not import and store both RAW and JPEG at the same time and keep them side by side is really serious oversight on adobe's part. it makes LR all but unusable for me. as i said in my library hell post, i am on tight deadlines and don't have time to mess around. i need to keep and manage both kinds of files for work purposes.
    camera manufactures have implemented the RAW/JEPG combo because the pros have demanded it. canon even allows the RAW and JPEG files to be stored on separate cards as a back up in case one card gets corrupted.
    so, please alex, don't try to market this bug to me as a benefit because adobe has crossed the final frontier of image editing software and i just don't "get" their hip new idea. even a program as humble as iphoto keeps jpegs and raws together without issue. what is the point in having a library at all if images can not be stored and organized in a logical manner?? also, for those who wish to shoot only one format there is a very easy option - don't turn it on in the camera.
    and don, i would be interested to hear more of your idea, though for me i would like to see all files treated equally be they JPEG, RAW. TIFF, PSD. at any rate i think it is really urgent for adobe to address this issue.
    i would like to request that adobe implement the standard storge/organizational scheme with RAWs and JPEGs being imported simultaneously and stored side by side. further, i am requesting that any other file types of the same image also be stored side by side with the master image.

  • RAW vs JPEG colours

    Hi,
    I've been having a sort of a problem or a question for a long time already.
    Namely, are the colours of JPEG and RAW quite a lot different? To me RAW colours look very unnatural and weird (If you are interested and it is of any help, then I can later add some straight-from-the-camera RAW and straight-from-the-camera JPEG images). What actually makes me think, there is sth. wrong with my computer's or programs' settings, is the fact that when the thumbnails of RAW are first previewed (I have tried various programs like Lightroom, DxO, Capture One etc), they look pretty much like JPEG-s, but when I click on them, the colours of both the large-scaled images, as well as the thumbnails, become flat and very off.
    I have thought it is because of incorrect colour management settings, but I myself can't find any solution to it either.
    So, has anyone else been having similar problems and have you found a solution, or is it just me with a silly problem?
    I searched for similar topics, but I couldn't find any at the moment.
    Thanks

    You just have to remember that RAW images have no processing done to the in
    the camera. It is the raw data from the sensor. JPEGs and Tiffs (if you
    camera supports that) do have processing done to them things like
    brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpening not to mention I suspect other
    things that we have no use control over in the camera menus (most cameras
    let you set the amount of sharpening, contrast and the like). So the
    difference you see between the RAW image and the JPG is as if you took that
    RAW image and made adjustments to it. Besides having the ability to control
    these basic adjustments with RAW you also get a much wider range of editing
    capabilities with RAW that you don't get with JPG. With JPG when a highlight
    is blown or a shadow is totally black there is more times than not not much
    you can do about it, that data is lost and gone forever. However, with RAW
    you can far more often than not recover the image data because it hasn't
    been thrown out.
    RAW is a lot more work, not doubt about it. That is one of the reasons I has
    taken me so long to move away from JPG or TIFF. However, with Adobe
    Photoshop Lightroom or Bridge and ACR it has becomes a ton more easy to
    process the several thousand RAW images that I shoot when I go out to
    photograph. I think it is just part learning curve and part having the
    software that makes the processing a lot less work.

    How do I identify and install latest RAW plug in for elements 10 for Sony A 7 mark 2

    Elements 10 is too old for this new camera. It can't be updated to the ACR 8.5 version, you would need PSE12 or 13.
    Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    You can download the free Adobe Dngconverter which can batch convert whole folders of your Sony raw files to the DNG raw format that your PSE10 can handle.

  • Dumping the RAW, and keeping just the JPG Version for some images ?

    I shoot RAW almost exclusively. Even my snapshots. I like the flexibility, and I have a lot of storage space (I'm spoiled).
    However, I've identified big batches of "snapshots" that I really don't want the big file anymore. There is NO way I'm going to do any further (or any at all) retouching.
    This may be a simple thing but... how do I best go about dumping the RAW Master, and keeping only the JPG Version?
    tia,
    e

    Yeah, I realize that.
    Until Aperture 3 I used a split workflow: Aperture for my "award winning artsy photos" (lol) and iPhoto for my snaps –many of which were actually very good .
    That grew out of using iPhoto for the first years I had my Mac AND my little Lumix snapper Camera. I had a Nikon F2 (slides), but I used Photoshop for scanning and retouching the TIFs.
    Then, a few years ago I got my Nikon DSLR and Aperture.
    Hence, the divided workflow.
    Now I'm importing all my old snaps from iPhoto (jpg), and aside from keywords and GPS, it's not a problem, aside from being tedious.
    Now my NEW photos (2008-now) are all RAW, including my "snaps". And I'm just trying to save space where possible.
    Oh well. I guess I'll just have to be REALLY careful about which snaps I:
    a) keep
    and
    b) export/import as JPG
