Difficulty networking to Windoze computer

We are new to Apple and are trying to network to our existing Windows computers. One of them is running XP Home and it seems to connect to it just fine.
The other is W2k and it shows up in "MSHOME" in the network panel, but when I click on it, it brings up a screen saying: "Select the SMB/CFIS shared volume you want to connect to." There is a selection box to select what the target is plus choices of
Cancel
Authenticate
OK
There are two users on that computer and a second hard disk. The 2nd hdd is what I want to connect to.
If I select the second disk and click OK, it flashes a message:
The alias "2nd hdd" could not be opened, because the Alias could not be found. There are selections:
Delete Alias
Fix Alias
OK
I am unsure what it means by alias, but presumeably it is the name of the user or device. I certainly do not want to delete any of those, and either fix or OK ultimately resulted in the last pane opening into a screen showing various info, the only seemingly pertinent bit being one line:
Last opened: Fetching.....
which is has been doing for about 3 hours now and I assume in stuck in some sort of non-productive loop.
Any suggestions on how to reach the W2k computer? Many thanks.
  Windows XP

Well, the problem is solved. It seems that the 2nd hdd is trashed. Don't know why, but assume that our Mac Mini's attempt to reach it did no harm.

This is easily done with dial peer statements . The dial peer in your originating router must route the calls to the terminating router first. That would look like :
dial-peer voice xxxxx voip ( the xxxxx is just a tag)
destination-pattern 45... (that would route any 5-digit calls beginning with 45)
session-target ipv4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ip address of the terminating router)
If digitones are to be dialed after the connection is established, use the statement:
    dtmf-relay-h.245-alphanumeric
You could also use a statement to specify the codec to be used:
    codec g711ulaw
You would need multiple voip dial peers if the calls were going to different routers based on the dialed digits. If all calls are sent to the same terminating router, use all wild cards in the dest-pattern statement.
At the terminating router configure pots dial peers:
    dial-peer voice xxxxx pots
    dest-pattern 45...
port x/x (whichever port the call is to be terminated on)
prefix 45 (this re-inserts matched digits which are stripped off by the pots dp)
Repeat for other ports which will receive calls.

I keep getting an error message telling me to adjust the network settings on computer as it will not connect to iTunes Store.  I have tried and no luck.

What version of iTunes is on the Mac?

The 5G iPod requires iTunes 10.7 or later and that requires OSX 10.6.8 or later.

  • My network disconnects when computer falls asleep???

I am working on Verizon Fios wireless network and my computer loses the network everytime the computer goes to sleep. The only time it works is when I do a full strt up. I have to switch over to to my airport express network after waking the computer.
Is there some kind of setting I can change to help this stuation?
    Thanks so much.

Same here on my iMac 2013 running Mavericks. As soon as display goes asleep, Airplay disconnects. Caffeine does not help.
Unchecking mirroring does not work either, leaving me with a screen resolution that's maybe fit for TV but unsuitable to work with when you want to carry on using your computer while music is playing on the Apple TV.
I start wondering if Apple is actually doing sufficient testing of their software. These are rather basic errors.

  • Can't turn bluetooth off, unspecified network in my computer.

Why can't I turn my computer bluetooth off? And why is there an unspecified network in my computer? And why do the bluetooth file exchange automatically opens at the same time when all the above happens? Why do I have to reformat my computer and import CDs once every few months?can

When you go to "System Preferences">"Bluetooth" and uncheck the "On" box does it come back on? Or if your bluetooth symbol is in the "Menu Bar" you can click the "Turn Bluetooth Off" in there.
Check in "System Preferences">"Sharing". Do you have any of the sharing boxes cheked? Your MacBook will search for any computer within range and put it in the sidebar of the "Finder" window. Is this what you mean?
Why do you have to reformat your computer and import CDs once every few months? What is going wrong that you have to do that?
And why are you at 10.6.1? Are you not doing Software Updates?

  • I get booted from my own wireless network whenever my computer sleeps

I just purchased a MacBook and connected it to my already existing wireles network. It works great, but my wife's ibook G4 keeps kicking her off the wireless network whenever her computer sleeps. This never hapened before, but seemed to coincide with my connecting my new MacBook to the network. To reconnect, all she has to do is to select our network from the list that pops up, but that gets annoying if you have to do it every time. Any help?

I too continually get booted, but not even when going to sleep. After a certain period of time, my Powerbook G4 disconnects from my Aiport. AND, everytime I start up, I have to manually select my Airport - it keeps wanting to connect me to the neighbors Linksys first. I have to say "no do not add Linksys to my preferred networks", then I have to manually select my Airport.
How do I stay connected to my PREFERRED network?

  • How to unshare /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?

    Hi
are there any security issues on /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?
Everytime I delete it :sudo rm -rf /Network/* removes the shared stuff.
But when I log back in I see /Network/Servers/users-computer.local is there again.
Are who can access my users-computer.local? is it shared via network?
How do i delete it permanently?
    thanks
    Kilopopo

You can't. Your single machine is on its own Network, with you as the local user. What you're seeing is normal behavior. There's nothing to worry about.

  • Losing network connection when computer goes to sleep

I have been putting up with a nagging problem that I hope someone can help solve. (I asked about this earlier and thought the problem had been solved, but it has not.)
Periodically when I start work after my notebook has been asleep, I am asked to reconnect to my wireless network. It doesn’t happen every time, and I have not been able to discover a pattern. I am also asked to re-enter my password, even though it is in my keychain and I always check the “remember this password” box. “Ask to join new networks" is not checked in the Advances pane, "Remember any network this computer has joined" is checked, and in the list of preferred networks, my home network is the top one.
I am not having any problem with the network itself and I am working on the desk where Time Capsule is located.
I am obviously doing something wrong, but what?
    Charles

Are you using TC as your router? Or do you have another router?
If another router, update the firmware for starters.

  • How do I get my USB to wireless printer on a network without a computer?

If you have a USB to Wireless printer and no computer to use the software to do this and do not want to use the WPS option (or it is not available), then the following method may help.
This is intended to get a USB to wireless, like the Deskjet 3512 printer, on the wireless network when there is no computer available.  However, this can work from a computer as well if you prefer not to install the software.
For these steps, I will use an iPad.
    1.  The printer will broadcast a wireless network of its own.  This usually has HP Setup and the model of the printer listed in the network name.  Connect a wireless device to this network.
    2.  Once connected, open the browser.  In my case, this is Safari.
    3.  Enter the 192.168.223.1 address in the address and press go to access the printer's status page.
    4.  Once there, there will be many tabs at the top.  Select Network.
    5.  Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
    6.  Select Next at the bottom.
    7.  It will search for available networks.  Select your network from the list and select next.  The network should be highlighted, select it again if it is not.
    8.  It will ask for the password.  Enter the password and select Next at the bottom.
    9.  The printer should now be connected to the network.  It may take a few minutes to reflect this.  Reconnect the computer or mobile device back to your regular network and it should be good to go.

    View Solution.

If you are able to go to other websites, then the iPad is not connected to the printer's network.  The first step is absolutely key for this process to work and that is to connect the iPad to the printer's broadcasted network.
For the steps to work, the printer will need to be connected to the printer's SSID for the printer's IP address to load.
While connected to the printer's SSID, there will be no internet connection so no websites will be able to load.
The steps provided are for mostly newer model printers that have the 192.168.223.1 address reserved in them.  However, older printers use a 169.254.X.X address.
What model is your printer?  You may need to connect the iPad to the printer and then print a network config page off the printer to get the proper address for the printer.
    What model is the printer?

  • How can I get firefox to talk to a second network on my computer?

I have 2 NICs in my computer. I want to connect to a server on the second NIC. However, firefox must be only trying to connect thru the first NIC to the internet. When I enter the IP address from firefox (which Windows would route to the second NIC) all I get is a timeout. It will not connect. How do I fix this problem?

Everything on the subnet is used for animated lighting control. The "servers" on the other end of the network are controllers for controlling RGB lighting. The software/ servers communication using a protocol called E1.31 which is a specialized protocol for lighting control. It uses Ethernet as the transport. The controlling software encodes the control signals and addresses them to a specific address (such as 10.10.10.151). The addresses used are setup in the software itself. Other than addressing the data, the software does no routing and has no knowledge of how the signal arrives at its destination. I know that the software, network, routing table, and controllers are all working properly because the software properly controls the lights.
However, I need to be able to "talk" with the controller, via my browser, in order to adjust the controller's settings. And Firefox (and Internet Explorer) will not connect to the controller under this network configuration. If I disconnect the network on NIC 1 (home network and internet connection), then Firefox will connect with the controller on NIC 2 with no problem. That has been the problem that started this question.
I am assuming that Firefox is sending the address request straight to the internet instead of Windows actually routing the request to the proper NIC. But I don't know enough about how Firefox works to correct this. Of course, I am just guessing about how Firefox is routing the address. I could be way off.
I hope this helps in the understanding of my problem.
    Thanks for your interest.

  • MDT / WDS Computers joining the network with correct computer name, but no drivers (including NIC) installed

I'm using WDS and MDT to install the computers in my network.
I recently reinstalled a server 2012R2 with the last available versions of WDS and MDT. Everything works fine except for the fact that none of my computers (different series) is installing the out of the box drivers in windows.
The network connection although is ok during setup because the computers add to the domain with the given computer name.
I'm sure I'm using the correct drivers and in my task sequence I enabled to inject all drivers.
    Ideas?

    Hi admin0485,
I am not very familiar with MDT, if you used the MDT to install the drivers we can ask in the specific MDT support forum, if you are using WDS to install drivers please recheck
your drivers architecture compatible with your system, we can not use the x64 driver on x86 image.

  • Why am i kicked out of my wireless network everytime my computer sleeps or shuts down?

why am i kicked out of my wireless network every time there the machine goes to sleep or when i shut the computer off. is there a setting where i can stay logged-in to my wireless network without having to select it every time?
    Running Lion 10.7.5
    very frustrating.
i hope the solution is not to buy Mountain Lion. that would make me angry.
    thanks for your support.

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. That also might apply to newly bought ones inside the first 90 days.
FWIW, IMO, the AppleCare extended plan's the cheapest insurance you can get for your new desktop machine.
