Difficulty opening document in InDesign

I've been sent an InDesign document which will not open in my copy of ID. I get the following error message: Cannot open the file "filename.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open by another application.
I'm using InDesign CS2 under Windows XP Pro. A colleague who is using ID CS3 on a Mac gets the same error message. The file probably dates from 2004.
Any advice on how I might get the file open gratefully received.
Thanks,
Tim

That message normally is associated with trying to open a file in a version older than the one used to create it. Is your friend with the Mac using CS3 (version 5) or CS (version 3). CS2 is version 4, and there is rampant confusion about the version numbers.
Even if the file was created in 2004, if it was opened and saved in CS3, it is now a CS3 document. Another possibility is that it was created in a pre-release version of InDesign, in which case the original creator would have had access to the tools required to convert it to a regular release document, but at this point you may be out of luck.
If you'd like to email the file to me at spammercatch at comcast dot net I'll take a look. Just the ID file, no, fonts or links are required.

    Hi,
When I double click on a certain box in one InDesign CS6 document another InDesign CS6 document opens. Although this is isn't the end of the world it is somewhat annoying.
    Any ideas?
    Kind regards

More info. Is this a link? Blank frame? Text Frame?
What's the OS? Is ID patched to 8.0.1?
Have you tried Remove minor corruption by exporting?

  • How do I open a PageMaker document in InDesign CS5?

When I try to open a PageMaker document with InDesign CS5 (Mac OSX 10.7.5) I get an error message that it "Cannot Open file.... Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format might be missing, or the file may be open in another application."  It's certainly not open in another application anywhere, It is, indeed, a PageMaker document which is supposed to be supported.  Before updating to current Mac OS, I used to be able to easily open this file with an old copy of PageMaker, but that no longer works on this OS!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Mike,
I found another copy of this file on my laptop and I think it might not be broken.  When I try to open it in text edit or Mellel, I get a much larger document with much of the material I know is supposed to be there.  Would you be open to giving it one last shot?  The new dropbox link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/12eqa6hh6tlse89/New%20Kabbalat%20Shabbat%20CBH (which, I know, looks like the old one, but I deleted that file and just uploaded this one).
If you can open and save it (possible saving it in PM 6.5 or some other form I can than open with InDesign, or just sending me a pdf, I'd be very grateful.

  • InDesign CS5.5 and CS6 Hang while opening document

    hello,
    I have the following problem:
Indesign CS5.5 CS6 and hang up several times a day when opening documents on. the user can not make more in the program and must kill the process. After reopening the document opens without problems (probably the recovery file). I have tried all known solutions (delete Preferences, user with admin privileges, delete caches, safe boot, ...)
here a hang report, which meanwhile has been created.

Can anyone see something in it and help me?

I second LibreOffice as it's the most recent fork, however NeoOffice and OpenOffice will also work.
Just say No money to Redmond!
Also the old Ready Set Go! will be having a Lion version out soon.
It's a low cost page layout program (like Indesign but without the high price) and can make booklets etc better, import the excel grpahics from LibreOffice.

Why can I not open a stated InDesign CS8.1 document when mine says it is InDesign CC version 9.1? I have creative cloud.

The version error messages are really screwed up and out of sync with the new naming (CC) system. CS8.1 would be CC2014 version 10.1

  • Opening InDesign CS and CS3 documents Crash InDesign CS3

    Hi Everyone,
When we have a CS3 document open, and we want to open a CS document simultaneously, InDesign completely crashes and will not open again until the computer is restarted. This has happened every time we have attempted this. Is this a bud with CS3??? The only work around is to close the CS3 Document and open the CS document, then re-open the CS3 document. This works, but it is a real pain, and time waster! Does anyone have any suggestions???
    thanks~

Have you updated CS3 to 5.0.2?
When you say crashed, do you get any error message? Have you checked Task Manager to see if the application or the InDesign.exe process is still running? There are a fair number of reports that InDesign "disappears" when opening files from Explorer and this might be something similar.

  • InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent

InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent, and a document that hangs InDesign, after restarting InDesign, will open fine. I found the following track, Re: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding  for instructions to "force a hang into a crash" and am posting the crash logs to  pastebin.com
This is the sample process report OPI_Sample9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
This is the corresponding InDesign Crash log OPI_InDesignCrashLog9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
I am hoping that someone might be able to read the logs and tell me what is causing InDesign to hang
For more background information we are using Mac OS X 10.10.3, Within indesign we are using an editorial management software called "NewsEngin GPS" that utilizes Rohohiko's ADIP ToolAssistant plugin and an advertising management plugin "Pagelink" from Mactive/NewsCycle Solutions. These are the only 3 third party vendors that are being used and of course all claim that their products separately are stable under Mac OS 10.10 and InDesign CS6 v8.1.

Did you try to export the INDD file to IDML, open that and work with the new files?

  • Indesign keeps crashing when opening documents

i recently intalled indesign cs5.5. it won't open documents created on other computers. the program crashes before the document ever shows on my screen. have called adobe tech twice but the problem remains unsolved. i'm running mac lion. have checked for updates. here's the crash report: http://pastebin.com/bN1e29cD

    Hmm.
InDesign's opening of the file seems to be triggered by an Apple Event -- are you using AppleScript to open this file?
Or opening it from the Finder?
What if you use File > Open from InDesign?
Have you tried  Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences
Does it work with another user account on the same machine?

  • Cannot open copy of InDesign CC document located on a network server

Adobe InDesign CC Mac v 9.2.1
We have always had the possibility to «Open Copy» of InDesign documents which is in use by another user by using the option «Open Copy» in the Open-dialog.
After upgrading to InDesign CC last week (currently v 9.2.1) we are now not longer able to open a copy of files in use, neither duplicate the file in Finder.
When we try to open a copy we get this error message:
«This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it.»
This is extremly irritating, and we spend a lot of time in closing files, duplicate them and open the copy manually. This has never been a problem until this CC version.
I assume this is i a bug from Adobe, and that it will be fixed soon! I hope not this is a «new feature»!
Annyone experienced the same problem and found a fix/workaround for it? Please...

Tried AFP and SMB on Mac (Windows server running Extremezip). Also doesn't work from a Windows PC-we get the same error.
A previous post from an Adobe staff member indicated this was a known InDesign issue. We (and it looks like a few others) were looking for a fix.
    Thanks!

  • Problems opening psd document in InDesign CS 5.5

    Hey everyone
I'm having a problem with InDesign. I'm using InDesign CS 5.5. I'm trying to open a psd document in InDesign and I keep receiving the following message :
" Cannot open the file. "Fiche final.psd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application."
Any ideas as to what I could do? I have Photoshop CS 5.1
    Thanks in advance
    S.

You don't open Photoshop PSDs in InDesign, you PLACE them!
InDesign is a layout application and you PLACE images and text in your InDesign document.
You only use OPEN to open other InDesign documents.
You should get a book about InDesign or read the Help files.
I see that Bob beat me to it. I'm sure he can give you a link to a good InDesign book.

  • Opening InDesign 2.0 document in InDesign CS4 - is it possible?

Someone sent me an InDesign 2.0 document and I cannot open it using InDesign CS4, which is the version I have. The error message I get reads: "Cannot open [filename]. The document was edited by a pre-release version of InDesign."
Is there any way to open these documents?
    Thank you.

    No.
This is not a Version 2/Version 6 (your version) issue. The user had a prerelease version of InDesign which saved in a format incompatible with the release version, as a form of copy protection for beta users. If the person providing the file was a legitimate user of the prerelease version of InDesign 2, then they might be able to contact Adobe to solve this problem, but I highly doubt it.
Anyone who would have been a legitimate user of a prerelease version of InDesign is not likely to never have upgraded in over six years. The supplier of the file is likely a severe cheapskate using a bootleg copy.
Your best option may be to ask for a PDF and a packaged copy (with all linked files), then use that as a template to recreate the file.

  • I cannot open any documents in Indesign after downloading Yosemite.  Says I need Java 6.  I have Java 8 and still doesn't work.  Please suggest.

I cannot open any documents in InDesign after downloading Yosemite.  Says I need Java 6.  I have Java 8 and still doesn't open.

It may seem strange indeed, but yes, you have to ALSO install the older version 6 for Apple's system; other applications will use your Java (which I believe is now even 9) and others will use that version 6.
    Download directly from Apple here:
