Digital Audio won't start up

Need a little help from the experts. Finally scored a clinker off eBay ... my first in about a dozen tries.
When I push the start button on the 533mhz DA, the red LED on the motherboard lights briefly - then goes out; the cooling fan starts - then dies. This is true whether I continue to hold the start button or release it.
I have removed the start button assembly and fitted it to another DA ... where it works.
I have checked the voltage of the PRAM battery - which reads good - and also swapped it with another working battery. No help.
I have pushed (once) the PMU button and held it down about 15 seconds. No joy.
I have checked the pinout readings of the 22 pin main connector; connecting across pins 22 & 11 gives a steady 28v., across 1 & 11, 4 & 11, and 10 & 11 gives a momentary spike and then nothing.
If I read the Power Supply Voltage Test Article correctly it looks as if I'm ready for a new Power Supply, but is there anything I may have missed? I'd hate to spring for a Power Supply and then discover I'd missed something else - probably obvious.
Any help would be appreciated &c. You guys have contributed greatly to this tinkerer's education ... without the Forum I'd likely still be wondering where's the slot I put my quarter in.
Regards ..... Jon

Do you know if this G4 has been sitting for an extended period, unplugged from an electrical outlet? If that's the case, the internal battery is undoubtedly very weak or dead, so I'd recommend replacing it (3.6-volt ½AA lithium). Have you checked all of the critical internal components, and made sure that the connections are secure and that the memory and PCI cards are fully-seated? If left unused for an extended period, there may be oxidization in the slots, compromising the connection. I'd remove the memory and PCI/AGP cards and inspect the gold-plated contacts. If darkened, I'd gently clean them with a soft gum eraser. Be sure to blow off all rubber shavings, and then reinstall them.

I've got a hold of a G4 Digital audio which won't start up. The power button lights up for a split second and then shuts down. I've noticed that the red light on the m/board does the same.
Any pointers as to what the problem might be ?
    Many thanks,

  • G4 (Digital Audio) Won't power on

I added a superdrive to my unit. Everything running fine for 30 minutes. My screen froze while I was downloading and I had to use power button to shut down. Other keyboard exits wouldn't work. When I press power botton it lights up till I let go, then goes out. Main and CPU fans run as normal. I can press power button, it lights up and shuts down after 5 seconds like normal. Tried reseting PMU. No change.
Noticed drive power cable pinched in door. I can see bare wire. The case is sharp in that corner. Can't see any fuse in power supply.
    New power supply time?

    Welcome to the Discussions.
"Noticed drive power cable pinched in door. I can see bare wire. The case is sharp in that corner."
If the wire is shorting out, that might be preventing startup.
If you can free the wire from the door, and wrap the bare part with electrical tape, that might fix it.

  • G4 (Digital Audio) won't turn on! Help?

Pretty self-explanitory, I press the power button on the front of the machine and the white power button LED comes on and then immediately fades off. No reaction from the monitor, cooling fan, logic board, or anything. I checked and there are NO loose wires inside anywhere. I don't understand why the LED comes on but nothing else.

You probably need a new internal memory battery. But first do a PMU reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • PowerMac G4 won't start, pull Hard Drive?

My PowerMac G4 Dual 450 (Digital Audio) won't start-up. It's dead. I've replaced the battery and reset PMU, still nothing.
I also have a new iMac. Can I pull the hardrive out of my old G4 and put it in an external case and access it with the iMac? Will the iMac recognize it? Anything else I need to do?
    Thanks.

Get an external Firewire case & install the HD. Firewire is much faster than USB 2.0, and currently, unless you have a USB 2.0 PCI card, your USB 1.1 is very, very slow. You should be able to access all the files.
Be sure you followed Apple's PMU reset procedure. Also, look at the tips on this site Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • G4 digital audio logic board replacement

My digital audio G4 was starting to shut down by itself regularly, the logic board and the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Limited Edition video card were heating up well past prudent levels. I'm also running a set of dual Powerlogix dual 1.3 Ghz CPU units on this rig but that didn't seem to be suffering at all. I figured it was the motherwoard wearing out so I replaced it.
Now the tower will start up fine and has not shut down, but I can;t get my montitor to respond (stays black), seems to be getting no signal. The monitor is a Mitsubishi flatpanel, I also can;t get the internal CD drive to open. But the red LED on the motherboard is on and an external airport unit hooked up to the G4 tower is working fine.
Do I need to revert to the original video card, install the Radeon drivers and go back to the Radeon card? Or do not that but anything else?
Appreciate any help/insight/suggestions anyone can provide. Thanks!

The default screen resolution is stored in PRAM, and since you had to disconnect the DC power connector to do that upgrade, the PRAM Backup battery was called into service. If it is weak or dead, corruption creeps into the parameters. Corrupted screen resolution is usually out of range, so you get no picture. Booting to an OS 9 system/Install CD should give you a picture temporarily. Using the Monitors Control Panel should re-write that part of the PRAM, but it is not provided on the CD, you would have to dig in your Disk-based OS 9/Classic to find it.
You may need to Zap your PRAM, press and hold the PMU RESET button on the motherboard, and/or replace your PRAM backup battery.

  • HOW TO FIX HD AUDIO/UNKNOWN DEVICE/DEVICE WON'T START LENOVO H320 Win 7 64-bit

Fix for - HD Audio devices won't start or you can't load correct driver. Lenovo H320 - Win 7 64-bit I-3 processor. 5 series/3400 chipset
Here is a working procedure to fix the problem when you install windows 7 64-bit and can't get the correct drivers installed for the HD Audio devices 1)Realtek AC97 HD Audio device id = HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_17AA3604&REV_1001
and 2)Intel HD Audio device id = HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2804&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000 Regards >>> Sucromatic
For an IBM LENOVO 320 with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Version download these drivers to a directory in a second partition to prevent this nightmare from happenning in the future.
1)AC 97 high def audio version
Realtek HDA 2.67found on http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Main_Page or at www.realtek.comon right of screen on homepage and
    2) Intel HD GRAPHIC and HD Audio version
    Intel GMA 15.22.52.2559 (Vista/7) 14.46.8.5387 (XP)
    found on
    http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Main_Page.
Select your OS and and whether 32 or 64 bit. I recommend the .exe version as it works very smoothly. Uninstall HD AUDIO DEVICE or whatever it is called maybe "unknown device" with ac97 device ID "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_17AA3604&REV_1001." Afterwards install AC 97 HD Audio Driver.
After install reboot and wait till computer completely starts.
Now uninstall Intel HD Graphics or your graphics device. When you get the uninstall box open, select delete the driver software for this device and then OK. When prompted to reboot select NO and Immediately start the install of the Intel GMA driver. Which installs both the Graphics Adapter and the Intel HD Audio. Reboot when finished and all HD Audio devices will be functional (hopefully). You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab
Now uninstall Realtek AC97 driver you first installed to delete annoying Red Lexmark/realtek icon in Notification area (If your computer shows it after reboot) and windows driver update will install a microsoft driver (shown below)that works without the stupid lexmark red icon. See below. You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab
    High Definition Audio Device
    Driver Provider: Microsoft
    Driver Date: 11/19/2010
    Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17514

Voila. Now go to intel and run a driver update scan and it will likely correctly identify your Intel pieces and offer downloads for any that are not current. Good Luck!

  • Won't Change Back to Regular Audio After Setting "Encoded Digital Audio"

I have a first generation Mac Pro, and I've just recently upgraded to Lion. I used to play a fair bit of DVDs on the computer, but recently I've slacked off doing that. Today I popped in a DVD to play and then opened DVD Player up. Everything worked fine as it was supposed to. I've got the DVD player set to send digital audio out so I can get surround sound through my receiver. When I quit DVD player I don't get sound anymore through the optical out unless it's encoded digital audio. I've had that problem before, and to solve it I'd go to Audio Midi Setup and change the format to what it was prior to being set to "Encoded Digital Audio" by DVD Player. However, now with the upgrade to Lion it will not switch back. The option to do it is there, and I can click on 16, 20, or 24bit audio all day long and I won't get audio output from that port unless I restart the computer.
This is obviously a system bug that needs to be reported to Apple if they aren't aware of it already, but what I'm wanting to know is how can I avoid restarting to get audio back? Restarting Core Audio doesn't do the trick as I've already tried that.

From the iPod's Main Menu choose Videos -> Settings and make sure TV Out is set to Off.
Otherwise, try a hard reset as well.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • MB Pro Won't Start Up, Strange Light From Audio Jack

    Greetings Apple-users,
so my macbook pro won't start up. i was using garageband, and i think i may have overpowered my audio input jack, which might have been the cause of the kernel panic that happened. the grey sheet came over instructing me to shut the computer down, which i did.
i attempted to turn it back on, but now all i get in a popping sound instead of the startup chime, the sleep light is on (slightly maybe?) and a red light is emitting from my headphones jack. very strange. I've tried all the usual fixes, and to no avail. the guy on the phone from apple told me i should send it in for repair, but i'm in germany and not in a big rush to do that.
i'm just curious to what any of you might think is going on. from looking around, i know now the light has to do with the optical audio switch, but no playing around with a toothpick could get it to turn off (wasn't sure where the switch was, but nonetheless,,,). I haven't been able to boot up to the disk or anything.
also, if this means anything. when i plug in my external speakers i hear what sounds to me like a light phaser effect, like possibly out of garageband. a strange hiss. and when i plug in my amp to the input through its speaker output, i can hear it through my speakers.
it's all very strange, but i can't help but think that this isn't a hard drive failure or even the logic board. maybe just a short or something in the jack?
any ideas or suggestions you have would be great.
    thanks,luke

The SAME thing happened to me this morning when i booted up....There was a reddish light coming from the side of the computer where the jack is. However, I have a powerbook so i am not sure what this is.

  • Audio won't play from the start of the slide

    Good afternoon all,
I'm new at this and recently created my first instructive
demo. I recorded and have everything synching up fine but the audio
in two of the slides WON'T start the audio from the first words
recorded. The audio begins in the middle of the second or third
    word spoken.
This only happens when I play the entire demo or from a
certain point in the demo to the end. If I play the two slide with
the audios indiviually you can hear my every word from start to
finish and if I play the audio ONLY I hear it fine also.
I have tried starting the audio a few seconds after the
screen being demonstrated starts, re-recording the audio, adding
silence in the beginning.........................anyone have any
suggections. I've done everything I know to do but start over from
    scratch.........I didn't say that...........LOL!

My suggestion was going to be ensure the audio file starts a
    second or
two after the slide starts, but seems you're already doing
    that.
So if you've tried all those things and no luck, then I'd
    recreate the
    slide entirely.
Insert a blank slide, copy the background from the problem
    slide to the
blank slide ('paste as background'), then insert the audio
    and test it.
If it works as expected, then copy/paste any other screen
    elements from
the problem slide, then delete that problem slide.
    Helps?

  • Classic won't start, can't upgrade, and other problems...

There's something not quite right with my Mac, and I can't quite pinpoint it. Because of this, I'm not even certain I'm posting this in the right forum! Here's the situation:
I have a PowerMac G4, upgraded with a an extra hard drive, an ATI Radeon Pro graphics card, a Sonnet Duet G4 Dual 1.8GHz processor, and (as of today, prior to this 10.4.7) am running OSX 10.4.8.
When I got the machine, it came with OS 9.1 installed. I later upgraded to 9.2.2, and then eventually to OSX. My Classic system folder stayed at 9.2.2
About 10 days ago I installed the Sonnet processor upgrade. In order to do so, I had to rejig my system a bit, as the installer for the upgrade only works in 9.2 and not Classic (yeah, bad call on Sonnet's part).
I partitioned my Back-Up drive, and installed 9.2 on it, installed the software for the processor, and then the processor itself. After checking everything worked, I then unpartitioned my Back-Up drive and removed OS9.2.
Although the processor works fine, and has doubled the speed of most tasks, ever since it was installed, I have been prone to crashes. Most often when working with large files in various applications such as Photoshop.
Also, Classic won't start now. I hardly ever use Classic these days, only for one or two tiny programs I could live without, but the fact that it refuses to start is niggling me. I reinstalled OS9.1 from my original disk, and now I can't upgrade to 9.2: all that happens is I get a message saying that I have 9.1 and that it is recommended I upgrade to 9.2! But Classic won't open, so I can't upgrade to 9.2.
The next thing that's started happening is that my broadband connection keeps dropping. This never happened before. This is happening so frequently it's really annoying; the only thing that cures it is a restart, but restarting 10 times a day isn't funny. I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem. This has worked fine for over a year.
Yesterday I tried setting up a wireless connection with a Belkin router, replacing my USB modem, so my wife can use her Windows laptop to surf from the same broadband connection (my Mac doesn't need to be wireless enabled itself). But this hasn't worked, even though we followed the instruction manual exactly. I suspect that the reason this hasn't worked was because of the underlying problem on my Mac, whatever it is. I've gone back to using the Speedtouch modem to connect to the internet for now.
I've just today done a complete system reinstall of OSX 10.4, and downloaded the upgrade to 10.4.8, in an effort to solve this. Unfortunately, my Mac still seems to be in the same state and it hasn't solved anything. Classic still won't open, the connection still keeps dropping, and I'm almost at the point of kicking the **** thing through a window! Please, has anyone got any bright ideas? I don't know where to start....
    G4 Digital Audio   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi, thanks for responding.
I've made a couple of changes, double-checked everything, and I have to say that now 10.4.8 has been on my machine for a few days, it's a lot more stable. No crashes. Maybe it just needed to "settle in", ha ha. I also got a router and went wireless, something I needed to do so my wife could use her laptop to get online. This seems to have solved the connection dropping.
So the only thing left is not being able to open Classic. I think maybe you're right, and the new processor doesn't like Classic. But, to tell the truth, I hardly ever use Classic anymore, and I can live without it. So I think I'll leave everything as it is for now, unless something major happens. I spent nearly £500 on the processor upgrade, and it has doubled the speed of my Mac: I really don't want to have to take it out:-)

  • Premiere Elements 4 audio won't play on mp4 files, codecs missing/unavailable on .mov files

I dowlnloaded Premiere Elements 4, and when I import mp4 files, the video plays but the audio will not. I've also tried to import .mov files, and an error message pops up that says "Codec missing or unavailable." I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime, but that didn't change anything. The files will play back on the video camera, but I"m having trouble with them on my computer. The audio on the mp4 files plays in Quicktime, but not the video, and vice versa when I import them into Elements. Any suggestions?

Premiere Elements 4 pretty much works with tape-based digital video. That would be video from a miniDV or HDV tape-based camcorder. It doesn't handle other formats very well.
If you plan to edit MP4s, you definitely want to upgrade to a more current version of the program. If you can't install a current version of the program, you may need to address issues on your computer (such as an outdated operating system or underpowered hardware configuration).
Short of that, you could buy Quicktime Pro from Apple for $29. It will edit MP4s, even on a PC platform.

  • Installing Classic/OS 9 on a G4 Digital Audio with OS 10.4.11

Ok, I bought a used G4 Digital Audio some time ago. It did not come with the original disks. I purchased Tiger (10.4) and have been running along fine.
Recently, I discovered a need to run several OS 9 apps. It seems the "Classic" environment is not installed.
I have the retail OS 10.4, but I could not find any option to install the classic environment. I also have a retail OS 9.0 (from when I upgraded my old Performa 6205...remember those?). The 9.0 disk mounts, but will not boot or install the OS.
Is the only solution to find a used copy of Digital Audio restore CDs? Is there any potential harm in copying the system folder from the OS 9 CD over to a hard drive partition and trying to boot from it?

Hi, Richard. You can use a retail OS 9.2.1 installer CD to install a bootable OS 9 on your G4 DA, but no earlier version, nor any model-specific installer disc designed for another Mac model, will do.
Copying the System Folder from your OS 9.0 CD won't do any harm, but neither will it work, for two reasons: that System Folder only starts a compatible Mac when it's run from a CD, not from a hard drive; and your G4 DA won't boot under any circumstances to any OS version lower than the model-specific OS 9.1 build that was shipped with it.
For use only as Classic within OS X, you can copy the OS 9.1 or higher System Folder from another Mac to your hard drive. It will not be bootable.
