Digital Camcorder (ADVICE PLEASE!!!)

I recently borrowed a digital camcorder from a friend and it needs to be returned soon.My ultimate goal is to get the footage that I recorded with it into Quicktime so I can post the footage on Youtube. This camcorder has no firewire connection on it.It has USB,DV,and standard A/V outputs. What is the best and most simple way for me to get the footage from the miniDV tapes into my IMAC as Quicktime files???or any digital format for that matter???

If it doesn't use tape and a lot of JVC use hard drives then it records MOD files which are in fact MPEG-2 files and they won't export from QT Pro with sound. The question of MPEG-1 and 2 exports is asked here a thousand times a month. The answer is always the same:
Open directly from the camera in iMovie 08 (not from copied files - it has fits if it loses the MOI files that are on the camera) or use MPEG Streamclip to open the MOD files and edit (cut, trim etc.) and export to MPEG-4 using the iTunes button and appropriate size in MPEG Streamclip. Or trim and export them to MPEG-2 again if you want not that that seems to be too helpful.
If you have Toast 8 you can use the MOD files directly but you cannot edit them but it exports to various formats including DivX for those who like DivX (I don't).
I normally open in Streamclip, edit out the dross , export to MPEG-2 and use those new files in Toast to make DVD's in 1/2 the time of iMovie and iDVD.
When dealing with MPEG 1 or 2 ALWAYS correct timecode errors first in Streamclip Apple+F if it doesn't remind you to as it probably will or your 1 hour movie might be 3 minutes long. However after editing don't do that or it puts all the cuts back.

  • Novice.  Creating a DVD from camcorder - help please..

    Hi all,
I am tasked with creating a DVD from some of my dads camcorder tapes. Can anyone provide a simple advice list. I assume that iDVD (which i have never used) will be the software to use?
Look forward to hearing from you helpful and intelligent people out there.
    From a complete simpleton.
    Kind regards,
    Alan

    Hello, Alan,
First, you need to determine if these tapes are digital or not. If they are not digital, you will need to convert them into a digital media format that your version of iMovie can accept. (For example, iMovie 6 can accept only DV footage).
Does your dad have the camcorder that he used to record the tapes? If his tapes are not digital, you can connect his camcorder to a digital camcorder and record each tape to digital miniDV tape. I think it is easier to use iMovie 6 for your movie-making, especially if you are thinking about editing this footage, cropping out bad parts, adding titles, effects and/or audio clips. That is why I am recommending recording to miniDV tapes.
Having the original footage on miniDV digital tapes is also a good way to store the originals, takes up very little space.
If his tapes are some other format, post back for info regarding how to proceed,
What version of iMovie do you have? I am assuming that you have iMovie08 since you are posting in iDVD08. As stated, I recommend that you do this project in iMovie 6. If you don't have it on your computer, you can download it here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
And, I recommend viewing this tutorial: http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/tutorial/
Once you have the footage on the miniDV tapes, you can connect your digital camcorder to your computer's Firewire port, open a new iMovie project and import the footage. You should limit each iMovie to about an hour and a half, if possible. A single-layer DVD can hold about 2 hours of content maximum. It doesn't matter what the size of the iMovie is in GB, only its length matters for iDVD.
After you import the footage you want, you can edit the clips and place them on iMovie's timeline in the order you wish. You can choose to add titles, transitions, effects and audio. iMovie has one video and two audio tracks so you can easily see what you are doing. If you want to have different chapters(scenes), you mark them in iMovie. Another advantage of iMovie 6 over iMovie 8 is that you can put chapter markers where you want them, not just at specified intervals.
After your movie is finished, close iMovie.
Open iDVD, create a new project in which to place your movie.
You should do this tutorial before you begin to work in iDVD:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd-create-63
Once you get your first iDVD project ready to burn, do a 'save as disk image' and then burn the actual DVD from the disk image using Disk Utility. You will need to use a good brand of DVD-R disks, such as Verbatim or Maxell. Memorex has been problematic for many, and don't use a cheap store brand. Select a slow burn speed, 4x or less.
    That's a brief summary.....
Post back if you need further information! Good luck with your task!

    Hello DieterVE.
Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of information on the web about the HD Digital Camcorder V5560u that I can point you to. You might want to take your camcorder to a camera specialty shop and have them help you find the accessories that will best work with the camcorder.

  • Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder

Does anyone use a Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder? I'm thinking of purchasing 3 for upcoming projects, as these are an ok price, but I'd rather spend a little more if these are junk. I'd be shooting sports action. Any advice on this camera or another that is good with fast motion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you vey much R. Mitchell Fore. Those two suggestions for Sony fall right into my proce range where I can afford to buy 3. It seems that the jump from prices goes from $300 up to $1800+. Is there really a need for a $1800 camera at the begining of a business? With so many people owning HDTVs, is a smaller, cheaper camera going to cut it? I mean, just how much sharper is a wedding shot on a commercial/production grade camera used by the pros? Someone on this website to me to make a little money, be prepared to spend alot of money, and I concur, but I need to make some money to invest. But I don't want to short myself on equipment if the difference is really that great.

  • While digitizing camcorder video, PE7 has begun splitting into lots of little video files.  Help!

I have successfully imported/digitized ca. 80 analog Hi-8 camcorder home videos into PE7 from a Sony Digital Handycam camcorder via a FireWire cable/interface.  However, PE7 has now begun splitting the incoming video feed from the camcorder into lots of little (i.e. shorter) digital video files.  This is now happening with a 2nd camcorder tape.  I don't know why this is happening or how to change settings so it doesn't happen.  It doesn't make any sense why it is happening on these tapes.  Is there something that has happened with the original camcorder tapes that is kicking this off?  Or did a PE7 setting get messed up somehow?  Or what?

Thank you Steve, Neales, and Infinity Focus for your input.  I haven't tried the freeware YET but I may have to.
Here is what I have done:
    In the "Capture" panel,
       1) Capture to Timeline
       2) Split Scenes
       3) Smart Tagging
are ALL turned off (and were already)
Additionally, in the Capture Preference section of the "Device Control,"
       1) Abort capture on dropped frames (was already off)
       2) Report dropped frames (I turned off)
       3) Use device control timecode (was already off)
    are ALL turned off.
I am not yet finding, to my knowledge, any other possible relevant settings.  However, Infinity Focus Photos references a "split scenes setting" that he/she sometimes sets too high.  Not sure where this is in PE7 or if I can adjust the level of split scene setting is, if even possible on PE7.
One concern - I digitized via the above-mentioned means ca. 80 analog Hi-8 tapes successfully via a Digital Camcorder and the Firewire port successfully.  These tapes, except 1 or 2 were all recorded on the same Sony Hi-8 camcorder.  Howevever, I later found another camcorder tape recorded on the same camcorder machine.  Nothing should have been different in terms of the recording.  Yet, rather than record the WHOLE tape as 1 file as in the previous 80 tapes.  It split these 15-25 minutes into ca. 39 different files.  Now I am trying to digitize another 20 tapes recorded on a different camcorder and these are ALL being split into shorter files.  This makes no sense to me.  I didn't change any settings on PE7 from before.  However, I have NOW turned off "report dropped frames."  This doesn't seem to make any difference.  Plus the reporting of dropped frames is still made at the end of the digitizing task.
As I am converting from analog to digital, unless I request PE to split scenes/smart tag which I am not (to my knowledge), I don't understand why it won't record the entire tape to one file.  I wouldn't think it would be reading a digital time code as the tape is analog.  The only thing I could imagine is that is somehow reading changes in the picture (like going black) and trying to make smart decisions automatically (which I have NOT asked it to do).  If you will, please clarify for me what might be going on.
Now that I've expressed the details, let me also express my frustration with PE7.  I don't know if any here are employees of Adobe and, if so, I apologize.  However, I've been very frustrated and disappointed with PE7.  In my efforts to digitize and edit video footage, it has seemed that time and time again, whatever I think it should be able to do and want to do, it cannot do.  I'm sure that there are many things it does well.  However, importing and converting footage is one of those things that I think is an extremely limited function for PE7.  I also own an older Premiere Pro (which I don't use).  So many things that it seems counterintuitive that it SHOULD be able to do (without listing all of those out here), it CANNOT do.  Rather, the posts scattered throughout this form seem to be constantly suggesting labor-intensive work-arounds or third-party freeware or shareware to accomplish what this software SHOULD be able to do simply.  From that perspective, I would argue that this version of Premiere Elements is poorly engineered.  I bought Premiere Pro and then Premiere Elements because I have been very pleased with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and the whole of the Adobe Creative Suite software.  I feel bad because I have consistently regretted this decision which has resulted in substantial time delays in doing this project and hundreds of hours of additional work efforts.  However, I am now fully invested into PE and switching would result in much re-work.
To me, a great video editing software (well-engineered) is fully intuitive (i.e. you can look at it and figure out what to do) and can accomplish the tasks needed from digitizing/importing through organizing through editing through final rendering for any but extreme cases (non-standard applications).  Everything I've had/used and done, I would consider to be standard equipment and applications but PE7 has struggled to work with it well (Thank God, I was able to borrow a digital Hi- camcorder and that my computer had Firewire.  Otherwise, I'd still be struggling).  At the same time, if one needs to dig further for more complicated tasks/settings, it is easy to burrow into the software beyond the basic functions to intuitively find and set those settings.  I wonder whether it might be time for PE to re-design from bottom up a good Windows alternative to Apple's iMovie applications that is consumer friendly AND capable of higher end editing needs/settings rather than continuing to make incremental changes to a software design that, in my guess, probably hearkens back to a previous era when highly knowledgeable video professionals were the primary or sole users of video software that required substantive background knowledge and a steep software learning curve.  I'm sure the current versions are much better than previous era versions.  Nevertheless, I would argue that a ground-up re-design may be in order that accomplishes the whole video process well and easily.  Just my opinions as a non-expert.

  • Import problem to after effects from hp t200 digital camcorder

Ok here is the problem, I just bought a hp t200 digital camcorder for filming and when i take video and try to import i get this error msg from quick time and after effects:
quick time: The document “[ I keep changing it differently but it's always the same no matter what i put ]” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
(I can't seem to make it work no matter what I do)
after effects: After effects error " file name " cannot be opened, it may be in an unsupported format. ( 86 :: 1 )
I need this fixed because I am going to be making a found footage film and I am going tobe putting effects in this (duh) and it would be most appreciated  to have an answer please.
    Jake

This sounds like Quicktime is missing the codec in which your camera records.  Since few people have every camera model and their codecs memorized, you'll need to identify it.

  • Digital Camcorder Recommandations

    Hi Everyone:
I'm looking to purchase a Digital Camcorder to make semi professional videos to sell.
I am totally confused as to what to buy and what is compatible with my Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.4.8.
I plan on buying Final Cut Express to do the editing.
    My budget is 1200.00 - 1500.00.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kim Cassidy
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you like what you see from that Panasonic, I would actually check out the next model up: the AGDV30. It is slightly more expensive. The electronics in the camera are practically the same, but the DV30 has a few more bells and whistles (such as an optional XLR adapter, which is always better than using the 1/8" connector). You might also like the form factor better. I've used this camera, and never had any complaints about it (just don't expect miracles).
It's always hard to answer a question like this. A lot of people may advise you make a much bigger investment in equipment if you're serious about producting a professional product. And that would be good advice. But an investment is only worth it if you know you'll get a return on it. Given your camera budget, the costs associated with producing HD(V) are probably too high.
Also, the other most important thing you'll probably want to invest in is a good light kit. Nothing looks worse than poorly lit DV, and I would imagine barns are a lighting nightmare.

  • New System Build feedback/advice, please...

Time to build a new WorkStation. My motivation for upgrading is that I have been using a mediocore laptop (i7m, 8gb, 250gb ) from my work as my home system for the last 2 years, I am starting to get more freelance coming in and need a good desktop.
I am not so sure about my processor, mother board and video card choice. I am more interested in app usability than absolute throughput and want to maximise my dollar investment.
    Purchase date: this week
Budget:  I'd like to stay close to $1000-1300, but can spend more for significant performance gains. As I do more  research, my inclinations are trending higher.
System Usage: My primary uses will include photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop, 3D graphics using 3D studio Max, Maya and Mud Box, HD video editing using Premiere and After Affects and  Web Design. I will also use it as an HD media player and hifi audio is important. Maximizing cs6 performance in premiere & pShop is my main target. I am focused mainly on user experience while running these apps. If I need to encode hrs of video or crank out frames in max/maya, I can do it at work. I seldom run games.
Monitors: I'm running two Dell U2410's IPS, calibrated w\Color Munki, one portrait one lanscape.
Parts to Upgrade: Full system build
    O/S : Win7 Ultimate, I might play with Ubuntu/Virtualization
Vendor: Newegg unless I can save big $$ else where. I like B&H.
It needs to be an Intel machine & I have chosen lga 2011 becuase I'll eventually go to 64gb. I'll do some modest overclocking.
Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your expertise.

Do you have any feeling about how much I'll gain by going to the 6 core cpu over the 4 core? Remember, for me usability in the cs6 apps is more important than marginal gains in throughput.

I have picked the MSI motherboard due to its support for 128gb ram, superior audio and other high end features. The AS Rock for its rep for solid value/performance. Opinions?
Finally, I would like some advice on video cards. I prefer nVidia to ATI, but I'm not sure which chip to go for. The six fifties are cheaper, but the 660 ti provides more CUDA cores.

    Alex,
I sure wish you would quick picking fights with lots of knowledgeable people just trying to help people build good PCs for running Adobe Premiere. (I am stating that based on not just this thread, but rather the strong challenges you seem to bring to about half of the threads that you've chosen to participate in).
I was the original poster to suggest that Neal select a larger case. Next Harm agreed and cited 6 points which I would agree with regarding why a larger box is better for a video editing rig.
What are the typical goals for someone wanting a video editing PC? I would expect that most users want:
    - robust, runs and never fails
    - has incredible power; face it, video editing with AVCHD is one of the most taxing applications a PC can face today
    - quiet; who wants to be doing creative work with any server room like wind noise
Now let me be specific where you are simply WRONG WRONG WRONG:
You stated: "Back pressure increases in larger spaces due to natural impedance of airflow (much like with electricity traveling over distance)"
Fact: Exactly the opposite; Back pressure decreases in larger spaces due to more room for the air to flow (much like thicker copper passes electricity with less resistance than a thin wire)
Your stated: "Open non-compartmentalized spaces are a recipe for hot spots - areas of turbulence with higher temperatures." and then cited a server room article talking about cooling air taking the path of least resistance -- going under the floor in a server room, instead of through rack mounted servers.
Fact: Lots of open space for large, slow moving fans to keep a video editing box cool is a great way to go
You stated: "Full towers - in themselves - are worse for cooling"
Fact: That is one crazy indefensible statement!
I seriously doubt that you fully comprehend the differences and importance of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, conduction, convection, and radiation for you to make the statements that you have so far and these are the staples for discussing how heat transfer takes place.
Note to other readers... There are lots of ways to cool components including cpus, hard drives, gpus and memory. I suspect that the noise levels brought by servers and some gamers would be totally offensive to the ambient noise level that you want in the room with you for video editing. Therefore we are left with just a few quiet alternatives: 1) lots of volume at low velocity (large cases, large fans, slow rpm), 2) liquid cooling, and 3) Cases with doors or baffles to keep the sound from a noisier solution from getting back to your ears.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • How to convert Hi8 to iMac? Have 2 video cameras: Sony CCD-YRV98 video Hi8 and Panasonic SDR-SW20 digital video. Please provide the steps to convert to iMovie '11. Also, is there a way to burn in blu-ray?

I already have two video cameras. One older (Sony) in Hi8 and the less older one (Panasonic) which is digital. Between the two can it be accomplished to transfer the Hi8 video on tapes to iMovie?
I have the newer iMac 21.5" and also would like to know if it is possible to record this on blu-ray. The iMac didn't come with iDVD, which means I have to get that uploaded. Any other suggestions?

    Sony Hi8 camcorder
No it is an Analog Camera - and have NO Digital-Out
I may be made a Wrongful assumption in that the - Panasonic digital camcorder - was a Digital 8 Camera.
If it is - it has a Digital Out (FireWire) and can playback the Hi 8 tapes from the other Camera.
If it is a miniDV Camera - it also have a FW-out (Digital out) - BUT can not play Your Hi 8 tapes.
Then there are not so many ways to do this.
If Your Panasonic digital camcorder - Has Analog in RECORDING ( not all have this, it was an EXTRA Cost ! ) - Then You can playback from the Hi 8 Camera to this and record onto a miniDV tape - to be played and Captured/Imported into Your Mac.
The Panasonic digital camcorder - Might have a feature - Play trough - that makes it possibly to use it as an Analog - Digital bridge - some can do this - But You've not told the exact type/no: etc - So I can not guess.
If this still do not work (The Panasonic digital camcorder do not have an Analog in connection/function)
    - Then You need an Analog/Digita Converting box - from Hi 8 to this A/D-box then to Mac via FireWire.
There are several types and prices - I got a fairly expensive box due to that I've lot's of old VHS tapes in even bad quality. And this - Canopus ADVC-300 - has a function - Timebase Correction - that helps a lot in regard to drop outs and Audio slowly going out of sync. I just keeps perfect even over several Hours of VHS-tapes.
    Yours Bengt W

    I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch early 2011.
The new features available in OS X Yosemite like Continuity, Handoff, etc are not supported in this model.
I did upgrade RAM to avoid any possible slowdown.
I found replacing the HD with SSD is  too expensive for  a 4 years old model.
Replacing the CPU/GPU is not for amateurs.
If you think that rebuilding a Mac part by part is a viable option, please go ahead and rebuild it.
    Best.

  • Audio disabled in Skype when using Digital Camcorder

    Hello guys,
I have a question regarding using DV Camcorder for Skype videochat. I have Mac Pro, OS X Leopard.
I am using digital Camcorder which is connected to Mac via FireWire connection. The problem is, that person I chat with is seeing my video fine, but cannot hear my audio. (I am using a standard external microphone connected to the camcorder via XLR, and camcorder shows that audio is received fine)
Is there any setting I have to change? Or anything else I have to adjust in order to fix this problem?
Thank you so much for any advise

There must be some users out there who for some odd reason don't won't the digital output to be mutable. Are they the majority of digital output users? Seems unlikely.
Can't we get our mute key back as an option for digital out in the Sound prefs panel?

  • Load balancing across 4 web servers in same datacentre - advice please

    Hi All
Im looking for some advice please
The apps team have asked me about load balancing across some servers but im not that well up on it for applications
Basically we have 4 apache web servers with about 2000 clients connecting to them, they would like to load balance connections to all these servers, they all need the same DNS name etc.
what load balancing methods would I need for this, I believe they run on Linux
Would I need some sort of device, or can the servers run some software that can do this, how would it work? and how would load balancing be achieved here?
    cheers

    Carl,
What you have mentioned sounds very straightforward then everything should go well.
The ACE is a load balancer which takes a load balancing decisions based on different matching methods like matching virtual address, url, source address, etc then once the load balance decision has been taken then the ACE will load balance the traffic based on the load balance method which you have configured (if you do not configure anything then it will use the default which is "round robin"), then it will send the traffic to the servers which it has available and finally the client should get the content.
If you want to get some details about the load balancing methods here you have them:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/overview.html#wp1000976
For ACE deployments the most common designs are the following.
    Bridge Mode
    One Arm Mode
    Routed Mode
Here you have a link for Bridge Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_Bridged_Mode_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Here you have a link for One Arm Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_One_Arm_Mode_with_Source_NAT_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Here you have a link for Routed Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_Routed_Mode_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Then as you could see in all those links you may end up having a configuration like this:
    interface vlan 40
description "Default gateway of real servers"
      ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
      service-policy input remote-access
      no shutdown
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.16.1.1
    class-map match-all slb-vip
      2 match virtual-address 172.16.1.100 any
    policy-map multi-match client-vips
      class slb-vip
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance policy slb
policy-map type loadbalance http first-match slb
      class class-default
        serverfarm web
    serverfarm host web
      rserver lnx1
        inservice
      rserver lnx2
        inservice
      rserver lnx3
        inservice
    rserver host lnx1
      ip address 192.168.1.11
      inservice
    rserver host lnx2
      ip address 192.168.1.12
      inservice
    rserver host lnx3
      ip address 192.168.1.13
      inservice
Please mark it if it answered you question then other users can use it as reference in the future.
    Hope this helps!

  • My Z2 tablet has yellow lines appearing on screen edges. Advice please?

My tablet developed a yellow line down the left hand side of the screen fairly early on. This was shortly followed by another line along the bottom, and now one on the right. Advice please?

Definitely a hardware fault, you should have no problem getting the tablet replaced, or repaired otherwise.
