Digital Capture direct

I've been doing some web searching for an answer to this but have yet to discover anything encouraging. So here's my question/problem:
I have a nice photo table with a stable crane like rig on the back (Imagine a camera mounted directly overhead looking down at the subject) - perfect for my needs of product photography. The only problem is no matter what camera I use, I cannot see what I'm doing when the camera is mounted on the vertical crane rig - especially when it's high up. So, is there a software/hardware solution that will allow me to operate the camera remotely from my mac? More simply put, allow me to connect to a remote monitor and/or capture images directly to the computer? I've been out of the photography arena for a while now and don't know what's available these days. It makes sense to me to bypass capturing to the camera's internal memory and go straight to my hard drive, which is where it will end up anyways. Are there cameras that will allow me to do this? Will aperture allow me to do this?
Thanks all!

  • I need to capture directly to a my external hard-drive

I have tons of material recorded on a MiniDV. It is on standard definition, but I have no space in my hard-drive to capture directly on it.
Nevertheless, I do have an external hard-drive, and I'd like to capture directly on it. How can I do that?
I am using Final Cut Pro v.3.0
    I have a MacBookPro
I am capturing from Camera to Computer through FireWire.
My external Hard-Drive only works with USB.
Is there a way to do this?? I'm merely a beginner.

    Hi -
You need to designate the external drive as your scratch disk -
FCP3 is several versions ago, and I assume your are on OS 9?
You need to get to where you control your System Settings, or preferences for FCP.
There should be a pane that allows you to designate your scratch drive of your choice.
I've forgotten what it looks like in FCP 3, in newer FCP versions it looks like this:
But as pointed out, you really need to be capturing DV with a Firewire external.

  • I need to capture directly into Imovie using EyeTV.

I can capture directly into EyeTV software no problem. I have an EyeTV 200 with a firewire connection. I can export from Eye TV into Imovie. I would like to remove a step and capture from my EyeTV directly into Imovie. Currently I get a message that says "No Camera Attached". Does anyone know a work around?

The EyeTV hardware/software mpg-2 compresses the content on capture. If you have the latest EyeTV software, the software will let you export the content in DV format for use in iMovie and iDVD which it appears you have been doing.
As for >>I would like to remove a step and capture from my EyeTV directly into Imovie.<< That can't be done.

  • Capture directly to Hard Drive?

"Log and Capture" would seem to allow me to capture directly from my HDV cameras using the "Capture [Now]" button. However this only works if there is a tape in the camera (else the capture only lasts for a fraction of a second).
Is it possible to capture from an HDV camera directly onto a Mac's hard drive, thus not having capture durations limited by the length of a video tape?

hbars, thanks for pointing out internal drive too slow and may drop frames. that is good to know.
i've previously captured direct to HD on a Dell laptop with a typical 7200 RPM internal drive. it may be my HDV does not have a particularly fast bitrate... it is still about 13 MB/sec of MPEG-2 (is only 720p).
since picking up a MacBook I'd like to try the exact same thing on the Mac. Sync may certainly be an issue, but I'm trying this because some live performances last longer than 60 (or 90) minutes. to switch tapes i lose coverage from this angle.
so I've found with a PC this approach seems to work, no lost frames, no sync issue. and I expect FCP can do it too, I just haven't found to proper settings. even if it drops frames and is out of sync, I would be very curious to see how many frames drop and how far out of sync things get.
if someone could verify that yes, they themselves have captured HDV from a camera direct to their Mac without using any tape then at least I'd know I'm not chasing the impossible.

  • Tapeless capture direct to FCP?

I really like the look of Serious Magic 'DV Rack' software.
It allows you to hook a camcorder up to your laptop and capture directly to your hard disk. Providing your laptop is a PC......
I've tried to capture directly from a camcorder in record, using 'capture now' but had no joy.
    Anyone done this?
    Any tips?
    TIA
    Miller.

If you edit using the direct-capture media, make sure you backup that media file to something.
There's no timecode associated with it, so recreating it without that exact same media file would be tedious at best.

  • If I download an album onto my 5th Gen iPod touch, can i download the digital booklet directly ti my iPod, or do I need to use iTunes on a computer?

I recently bought the Great Gatsby album on my iPod touch 5th generation (great album by the way, I recommend it to everyone). In iTunes, it said the album came with a digital booklet. After downloading all of the music, I opened iBooks to see if it was there. A message popped up that said 'an error occurred while trying to download Great Gatsby Digital booklet' and I tapped retry. The message popped up again and I reluctantly tapped cancel. My question is, is this error message normal, indicating that I need to use a computer to download it, or should I be able to download digital booklets directly to my iPod touch?

  • Capture Directly From Camera

    Hi Lightroom experts
I've been using Nikon Capture so far to capture directly from my camera to my computer... can Lightroom also do this for me?
I've tried a lot of different things but so far I wasn't succesfull with it.
Can anybody help me out here?
    Thanks a million,
    Mark

I've used Capture exactly as Lee describes, it works fairly well.
My only gripe would be that it doesn't display the last image you captured, you have to move around with the cursor keys, which means walking back to the machine, which somewhat defeats the object...

  • Capture Direct to External HD/Dropped frames with Firewire-In and eSATA-Out

I have been working on a setup with a brand new 2.6 GHz MBP/4 GB/200 GB-7200rpm HD. I am capturing DVCAM via Firewire400. I am capturing direct to a LaCie Biggest Quadra connected to an eSATA PCI card. I keep encountering dropped frames on capture. Could this be due to the PCI connection? To the best of my knowledge, the PCI slot is a separate bus from the Firewire bus, which should avoid the pitfalls of i/o on the same Firewire bus. What could be the problem here? Thanks in advance.

If you have a MacBook Pro, then yes the ExpressCard bus is separate form the firewire bus. The pros here ALWAYS recommend capturing via firewire to a different bus, either firewire or eSATA via an ExpressCard (or PCI for the previous generation laptops) since the card is on a different bus. Have you tried attempting a capture to the inter drive? I know this is in no way ideal, but this way, we can rule out the camera/deck. DVCAM also isn't much bigger than DV if at all, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. Again, not ideal, but try connecting the big disk to the other firewire port on your MBP. This way we can rule out the eSATA card. Report back and we'll see what else we can do to help.

  • Capturing directly from camera causes audio to go out-of-sync

I'm capturing directly from Canon XHA1 camera into FCP7 on my Macbook Pro (onto an external hard drive) via Firewire. I'm also recording to tape in the camera at the same time.
This works fine -- until I stop & start the tape while recording. This causes the audio to go out-of-sync with the video on the Macbook captured file. (I just let the computer keep capturing, while stopping & starting the tape in the camera.)
Is there a setting in FCP7 to alleviate this problem?

    YOur not alone.
I use a Sony Z5, and usually doesnt have a issue, but noticed recently that we are having some sync issues out of the blue.
We connect to a MacBookPro via firewire and capture live in FCP.
We have since changed cameras that records onto SD cards, and havent had a issue since. But just wanted to let you know, your not on your own!

  • Capture directly to M2V and AIFF?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that can capture directly to M2V and AIFF (or any other compatible format), so that I can drag and drop the files directly into DVD Studio Pro. Thanks for the help.

    Hal
FWIW (unless something has changed) the Capty Fastcoder does not do realtime capture/conversion. It will take a DV file though and convert it in real time. Actually a good little gizmo though it looks like it may be donefor (clearance many places and no longer on LaCie site, could not find a new homepage.)
It did a serviceable job for some things, though it could not do anamorphic (at least the one I had/have, it iss around here somewhere, nice, small and light to throw into a laptop bag ) without actually adding top/bottom bars if I recall correctly.
But when you needed a quick encode it is great. Man if anyone comes out with something like this again and tweaks it just a little bit I would grab one in a second.

  • Live capturing directly into timeline for Green Screen

Basically i am doing a live event where i am using a green screen and people can choose different backgrounds which i will chroma key in but i want to know if it's possible on premier to capture directly into a timeline so i can essential have a chroma keyed output of what it will look like in the program window? I have been able to do this before when using Final Cut but at the moment it looks like I'm going to have to capture it first and then and then just add the clip to the timeline.
Any advice or help would be great, thank you

Got this to work! *Here's how:*
Connect the XHA1 camera to the Macbook Pro via Firewire (Fire 400 out of camera, into Firewire 800 on laptop -- using an adapter since the new Macbooks only have an 800 port).
Turn on camera and open Final Cut Pro 7.
*Final Cut Pro settings (under Audio/Video Settings):*
    Sequence Preset - HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
    Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire
    Click Log & Capture.
Start recording onto tape in the camera.
    Start Capture Now.
You're now recording to both tape and the laptop simultaneously. If you stop the camera recording, the laptop will continue to capture without a glitch.
BUT -- if you start the camera recording again (tape) while you're still capturing to computer, your captured file on the computer will have a glitch.
    So glad this works ...

  • Capturing directly from idvd

I am trying to capture a home vhs movie that I converted to a DVD. I can play the DVD on idvd, but cannot seem to capture it into FCP. Please help.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the input.
I think my original questions was not exactly correct. I don't want to go from IDVD into FCP.
I made a DVD of a home video. I can play the DVD on imac's DVD PLAYER and want to go from there directly into FCP.
I know that I could play it on my home DVD player into my camcorder, recording it onto a digital tape, then capture it from there, but I am afraid of losing some quality. I would really like to go directly from the imac DVD PLAYER into FCP.
    Any suggestions????

  • Video Capture Direct to IPOD

Does anyone know of a way to use an IPOD video as a DVR - without a computer and video capture card. Is there some sort of device one can plug the IPOD into that connects directly to a TV signal (e.g. Composite, RCA, Component, S-video, etc) and would allow you to record that signal directly to the IPOD?

I don't believe such a device exists (yet).
    Cheers!

  • Digital Camera direct photo transfer to iPod?

I plan to take a trip where I will take lots of pictures. But I want to leave my PBG4-12" home this time; yet back-up my Kodak DX6440 Photos (on several SD Cards) while I am traveling-- to re-use the cards; but also for safety!!
I hear that there is some type of adapter to an iPod that will allow direct transfer of photos (perhaps not the .mov videos?!)-- If I purchase a new iPod with color screen and video etc.-- can I get an adapter and directly download photos? Where can I get more info on this?
THANKS! Mac since 1989-- maybe join my daughter with an iPod now in 2005? Steve

    Stephen,
I had posted a similar question here regarding downloading video from my digital camera. No replies, so I went to the Apple store today with my Sony DSC-H1 with a short video and a few photos on it. Had it hooked up through the "camera connector" accessory to the new iPod and everything was successfully downloaded to the iPod. The photos can be viewed on the iPod but the video is not in a format recognized by the iPod, so you can't review the video but the stored video can then be loaded onto your Mac for editing, etc.
A 1 gig Memory Stick for my camera costs $125.00 CDN, so for the price of 4 I can get 60 gigs of storage. SOLD!

  • Possible to capture direct from monitor?

    Hi,
Is it possible to capture video directly from my computer monitor.  I want to create a video tutorial on running some programs.  I don't really know anything about the video software, I bought the CS5 master collection for the other programs.  So, I just wondered if any of them can do it before I spend $40 on FRAPS.
    Thanks.

Check out CamStudio; it's a free screen recording program.
Note that if you use the CamStudio codec, you'll have to transcode the files to a different codec as the CS codec is not 64-bit. You can also Google for 64-bit screen capture codecs, and use one of those.
