Digital Cinema Desktop ?

The option under view, for the Digital Cinema Desktop, is grayed out, I can't select it. I have an iMac and no monitors or camera connected.
Any thoughts as to why I can't playback in full screen?
Tom

Hi(Bonjour)!
Try the +refresh video device+ command as stated in user manual, at page 171:
+To quickly choose a different video interface for external monitoring, do the following:+
+- Choose View > Video Out, then choose an output option.+
+If you cannot see external video on your monitor, try the following:+
+- Choose View > Video Out > Refresh Video Devices to update the list of connected devices.+
+Note: This is especially useful if you just connected an audio or video device without quitting Final Cut Express.+

  • Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro

I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?
    Regards,
    Joerg

So are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.
then using a DVI to HDMI cable I should be seeing HD from my Sony bravia also?
Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).

  • No Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main (FCP6)

Been a while since I needed the forum, hope someone out there can help.  Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
To get straight to the point, I am trying to get Video Playback on my Cinema Display.  This Mac Pro, just like my MacBook Pro, has never had a camera or deck connected to it.  The only thing ever connected to either of them, via FireWire, are my external HDs containing the QuickTime files, so I don't understand why it is looking for a device.
All footage is captured through older desktop Macs onto external HDs.  The desktops used for capturing are the last generation before Apple went Intel.
Once captured, we connect the HDs to the Intel Mac Pros for editing.  Our format is DV-NTSC (thankfully will be tapeless HD in two weeks)
I am not sure why, but when I go to the Video Playback option on my Mac Pro it says [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480).  When I access the same option on my MacBook Pro, the Video Playback shows Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main.
I can't figure this out, the desktop and the laptop are configured exactly the same.  Why are they displaying different Playback Video Output options?
Both computers are set to Easy Setup option = Format: (all formats) - Rates: (all rates) - Use: Custom
    Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48khz
    Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48khz
    Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC
*Playback Video Output: my laptop lists Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main and my desktop shows Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480) ?????
    Playback Audio Output: Default
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Video: Same as Playback
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Audio: Same as Playback
Again, makes no sense to me since both computers are setup and used exactly the same way.
On the Mac Pro, I have:
    - Trashed prefs
    - Tried to open new projects with different Settings and Presets
    - Refreshed A/V Devices
    - Exteranl Video = All Frames and Single Frames
    - Created new Easy Setups
    - Changed the Display res
    - Went into Audio/Video settings = Video Playback and get the [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) option or "None"
    - Went into Audio/Video settings = A/V Devices = Playback Output =Video = "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)" or "None".  There is an option button highlighted but nothing happens when ai go to activare it.
    - Just changed [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) to "None" and now the option it shows is "None"
The only way for me to view my FCP project on my Cinema Display is to connect it to my laptop.
I have read where some people had to reinstall their FCP, which I will do if it is completely necessary, but not right now.
    Any input greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all of your time.
No second monitor connected.  Yes, have tried other formats.
I don't think I am going to do a complete clean install of the entire OS and all my apps, just FCP6.  I have copies of FCP X and CS6 installed on another Mac Pro that have been waiting to be played with.  I just need to get this project finished.  It is a college graduation w/ a RT of 1:54:00 (the horror). While I am play with FCPX and CS6, I'll do a reinstall of FCP6 just because I am curious.
I plan on purchasing five LCDs next week for previewing, so this my not even be that much of a big deal.
As for cloning, for whatever reason, it gives me anxiety.  In all my years, 12+ years of owning Macs, I have yet to clone my system.  Again for whatever reason, I don't really trust myself that I would do it the correct way.  I have a copy of CarbonCopy but never used it .
    I just shoot and edit..

  • "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Principal"

Hello, I managed to use the function "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Principal" before, to preview some sequences but i can't now. I tried everything (restart, making chose nothing is selected by mistake..) but it doesn't want to work, what can I do ?
    Thanks for reading.

I managed to use the function "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Principal"
Mine has Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main. Is that what you mean?
Try turning off your screen saver options in System Preferences.
What happens if you hit Apple-F12?
You might try trashing the FCE preferences, repair permissions and re-boot.

  • Digital Cinema Desktop with iMac?

Can the Digital Cinema Desktop feature in Final Cut be used with the iMac G5? (I have the May 2005 rev)

I should imagine so, because the extra monitor when used with the iMac simply mirrors the iMac's screen. So you should get two identical full screen images of your video.
I DON"T think you will be able to get your FCE editing windows on your iMac and the video on the external monitor simultaneously.

  • Lost three of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings

I've come across a frustrating problem. I have lost the ability to choose three of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings.
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main -- OK -
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview -- not available
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Full-Screen -- not available
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Raw -- not available
I reinstalled Final Cut Studio 2 hoping that returning to Final Cut 6 would resolve the issue but it did not.
    Any suggestions?

Partial solution, if I remove my AJA KonaLH software and reboot my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings return. I tried re-installing AJAKonaLH6.0.2, 6.5 & 7.0 and in every case 3 of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings would disappear. Now I suspect it was an update from Apple.

  • 16:9 Digital Cinema Desktop in Logic

    Hi folks,
Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with logic 9.1 outputting 16:9 correctly using Digital Cinema Desktop.
No matter what format I throw at it, it always squishes down to 4:3 which is a little off putting for the peeps looking over my shoulder.
The strange thing is that it was working a treat last week and has only just begun to misbehave.
Have had a bit of a search around to see if anyone else is having the problem, but cannot seem to resolve it.
    any ideas?

Never mind... I've found a way..
Export as PAL DV file from FCP and open with QTpro 7... change to 1024 x 576 and save as a referance movie.
Open in LogicPro and select anamorphic in the Digital Cinema Desktop settings and ... sorted!

  • Digital Cinema Desktop not working properly on MacBook Pro 15"

I'm having trouble with Digital Cinema Desktop playback on the main LCD screen of my MacBook Pro 15". I have selected Digital Cinema Desktop Playback-Main under the View menu but when I press option+F12 I only get a still frame. If I press space, the audio plays but the video remains as a still frame. If I press the right arrow key and hold it down it will play real time or just frame advance each time I press that key quickly. I have also disable my screen saver as recommended in the FCP help document.
Any ideas where a hidden setting which will remedy this might be? Should I trash the preferences and reset things?

View > Video Playback > All Frames.

  • Where is 'Digital Cinema Desktop Preview' in AE CS5.5?

Hello, I am trying to connect a projector to AE CS5.5 via VGA and the 'Digital Cinema Desktop Preview' option in 'Video Preview' doesn't seem to be there, which is what I have used in AE CS3. I am using a brand new Macbook Pro 15' with a display adapter plugged into the thunderbolt.
Please help as I have run out of things to try.

Isn't that dependent on a specific Quicktime component and a specific monitor setting? I've never used it, but it may simply be one of those legacy things that are simply no longer compatible... Maybe Rick has the correct answer. After all, the only Mac in my life currently is my 6 year old MBP...

  • No Digital Cinema Desktop Preview

I'm running FCP 5.1.4 on a MacBook Pro (17" 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo w/ 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM). For some reason I'm not offered the option of the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. It's not available in the settings or in my view menu.
This is one of three portable FCP systems we have and I tend to grab the old 17" Powerbook that has worked well for me for so long. Consequently, I haven't done much editing on this particular computer and I don't believe I've ever had occasion to look for Desktop Preview on this one, so I don't know whether Desktop Preview has just gone missing or has never been on this computer. I can say with certainty that earlier today, when I noticed it was missing, the two choices I had under "Video Playback" in the settings were "None" and "(Missing) Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)" though the latter was grayed out. Now that choice is missing as well. The only choice is "None."
Any thoughts on why I can't find it?
    TIA
    Pete

I believe you need DesktopVideoOut.component in
    /Library/QuickTime...
    Thanks for the response Patrick.
I looked for the component you mentioned in the Quicktime folder and you're right, it's not there. As a matter of fact, there's almost nothing in that folder, just a couple of DIVX and Flip4Mac components. On my other units there's everything from AppleHDVCodec.component to LiveType.component and fifteen others in between. Can I just grab this bunch and throw them into the empty folder on my MacBook Pro? I mean, everyplace I look the DesktopVideoOut is the same revision; version 1.2.3. Or, do I have to reload all the software on my MacBook?

  • Digital Cinema Desktop & Mackie MCU Problems

Ok so I decided to go ahead and upgrade to logic 9, i figured all the bugs would be worked out by now with all the updates. Well I was wrong lol.
In 64 bit mode Logic doesn't allow you to use external video outputs. This kills logic 9 in 64 bit mode for me as all my work is based on video and I need the biggest possible picture I can get which "Digital Cinema Desktop" works excellent for. (a Workaround would be great!)
For now I am working in 32 bit mode but has two quarks that make working such a hassle.
One, when adding a new instrument or any kind of dialog box appears logic automatically turns off "external video output" forcing me every time i make a new instrument etc. to recheck the "external video output" box to turn "Digital Cinema Desktop" back on! (Never Happened in Logic 8!)
Two, Under my Logic Controller (Mackie MCU using the logic protocol) I click the drop down menu for "Channel Strip View Mode" and change "Arrange" to "Tracks" so my controller will only load tracks to the faders and not auxes, outputs, master etc. It works perfect in logic 8 but in logic 9 ill click the "Tracks" my controller loads it and then when I exit it like normal it reloads back to the "Arrange" setting.
Any workarounds would be great I would even consider buying other cards or software to keep this from being a problem as long as I can
    A) Run the video both on a Flat panel TV (HDMI) and a 20" Apple Cinema display (DVI) Simultaneously.
    B) Doesn't cost more than 300 or 400 dollars.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!
    Computer Details:
    Mac Pro Early 2008
    8core, 8gbs ram, 8 tbs HD Space
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    Logic 9.1.4

    Thanks for this Tom.
I'm working on a project that contains both HDV & DV media. Ideally I would like to export back out to HDV when finished. However, when I set the Seqeunce Settings to HDV the DV footage appears smaller in the canvas window. What am I doing wrong here? Or is it just not a good idea to mix the two medias!

  • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview, keyboard layout and other bugs - Leopard

I just reinstalled my Mac Pro because I hoped it would fix some bugs... but no luck. Digital cinema desktop preview (dcdp) was working just fine until I installed the Aja Kona Lhe software, afterwards only dcdp for the main display was working, both dcdp and dcdp "full screen" have disappeared. The other things I was hoping 10.5.2 would fix are the problem FCP cannot remember the keyboard layout I use (azerty-belgium) - every time I start the program I have to choose the layout again - and the fact I cannot export using compressor straight from FCP using qmaster: Final cut pro generated an error! (this has never worked)
If you are having the same problems as I do, maybe we should compare hardware to see what we have in common that could be causing this problem. As I have found during my searches, some computers have similar problems, others don't, sometimes it also matters if you've upgraded from Tiger of did a clean install, where upgrading it seems (yes really!!) gives the least problems...
I really hope there will be a bugfix soon, because I'm sure I'm not the only one having these problems... or maybe I should just install Tiger and upgrade...???

I vote for going back to Tiger. That is known to be stable. Leopard and FCP is unpredictable at the moment.

  • Digital Cinema Desktop Not Available

I had to reinstall FCE 3.5 because it wouldn't open for some reason. Updated to 3.5.1 and it works again. But... I can no longer watch my video full screen with the Digital Cinema Desktop preview... Even if I refresh video devices, the option to watch full screen never comes up. I can watch through firewire, but not full screen on my Power Book. Thoughts?

This has occurred several times but I have not seen any reliable answer.
Have you tried the keyboard shortcut ............ The Cmd key and F12 ?
Also if you reinstalled FCE without first COMPLETELY UNINSTALLING it you may have some corrupt files.
Uninstall it like this (you can ignore the LiveType and Soundtrack items) :-

  • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Dropping Frames Without the usual message

    Hi,
I recently started having a problem with the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. When my video plays full screen it drops frames and the "Drop Frame" message does not come up. Basically the image stops (or freezes temporarily) and the audio keeps going. Eventually the video starts playing again, but it always stops again and the Drop Frame message never appears. And yes, "Report Drop Frames During Playback" is checked on. I am an experienced user and I have never seen a problem like this. It started recently after the update to 7.0.1. The video plays fine in the canvas window. The problem only occurs when I go full screen (using the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview option), which I would like to use. It was working perfectly, until recently. Any ideas????
No - there is not a bunch of stuff on my computer.
No - it does not matter if the video is DVCPro HD, HDV, or standard DV (I am using all three and I have tried different project files. I have tried files on one of the internal drives and different projects on external hard drives, all have the same problem.)
No - new software or files have been added to my computer
Yes - I trashed the preference about a dozen times. It does not help.
My system is less than a year old
    MAC PRO
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    6 GB 1066 Mhz DDR3
    FCP 7.0.1
    All thoughts are welcome!
    Thanks,

So far so good.... Thanks Andy!
I did look through the previous posts, but must have missed that one. I just replaced the "DesktopVideoout.component" file. It seems to be working! The real test will be after a day of editing later this weekend. Thank You! And Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Digital Cinema Desktop is black with sound

    Hi,
I've been testing some DVCPro HD clips - 720 at 24p - on my G4 Powerbook to see how FCP will perform. Editing operations seems smooth and work fine, but when I try Digital Cinema Desktop Preview, the screen goes black, and I just hear the audio.
Regular DV clips work fine. According to this doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93797
    DVCPro HD should be supported.
I am running FCP 5.04, 10.39, QT 7.1 on a G4 with a FW800 external HD. I have tried all combinations of using the laptop screen with/without an external monitor, with just the external monitor, and sending the DCD output to one or the other - same thing in all cases: black with sound. BTW, "Single frame" works fine, just not "All frames."
    Any advice/info is appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Powerbok G4 15" (FW800)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   External FW 800 HD

Hi x, thanks for the response. I don't have access to another Mac with FCP on it yet, but I did go through this: upgraded to 10.4.5 (bought 10.4.3 and then ran the combined update). Same symptoms. Reinstalled QT (yes - I meant .01) to 7.04. Reinstalled FCP. Ran the 7.01 reisntaller. Updated to 7.04 again....
AT each step, I tested the DCD behavior. The same each time... I did this with a regular clip, and also a rendered circle generated in FCP itself (figuring that would be a "pure" file.)
BUT, I found out something: If I set the zoom in the canvas to something higher than "fit to window" (so part of the image is cropped in the canvas) then, a still image shows up on the DCD screen. So, the DCD behavior on my PB is, with DCD on for "all frames", and the canvas set at any setting that lets me see the whole image, playback is black on DCD and frozen in the Canvas. With DCD off, Canvas playback is fine. With DCD on, and Canvas zoomed (or window resized) so part of the image is croppped, both DCD and Canvas freeze or stutter, but DCD is not black. And again, regular SD DV is perfect always.
So, I am thinking that my PB's video card is not up to handling the HD (DVCPro HD 720 24p)using DCD.
    Oh well...
