Digital distortion without clipping in Logic 7.0.1

this just started to happen.. i rebooted Logic and my machine to no avail... ***? anybody else have this problem? do i need to reinstall? this totaly blows, cause im in india and now i cant record.... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

let me further describe the situation... im monitoring on headphones via the built-in audio interface, and the problem occurs only when higher frequencies are passed to the interface.
really really strange.

  • Ghastly digital distortion while recording

    I ran into a really bad problem tonight when trying to record and could use some sage advice.
    I'm getting a lot of digital distortion when recording any audio on any audio track using either of the mic inputs on my Presonus Firebox interface. There's no noticeable distortion when monitoring the recording using hardware monitoring through the Firebox, but it's very noticeable on playback.
    I've confirmed that this is not a gain-staging problem (the Firebox clipping indicator does not come on and the levels going into Logic were all well below -6dBFS), it's not a problem specific to a mic or to any mic, and it's not a mic cable problem either: it happens with DI'd guitars, vocals, you name it. It does not happen when recording an audio instrument, nor does it happen when playing back previously recorded tracks, nor does it happen when playing streaming music. I don't have an easy way of checking the line-level inputs on the Firebox, but if need be I can look into that tomorrow as well. I recorded with the setup successfully this morning, so the problem would have developed this afternoon or evening when I fired everything back up. And, FWIW, since running into the problem tonight I've successfully moved files to and from the Firewire hard drive I record to. If it's significant, I typically hot-plug the Firebox when shutting it down for the evening since it doesn't have a power switch .
    I obviously have a nice long wait on hold with Presonus and / or Apple tech support to look forward to tomorrow, but for the meantime I'd love it if any of you could help me determine whether the problem is with my Macbook or with the Firebox. And if you are in possession of The Answer, please share it with me.
    Thanks,
    Trent

    I've had a problem with going from GarageBand to Logic. Total distortion of audio in playback (didn't record anything new, just played existing audio). The simple fix is to open Audio Hardware and Drivers preferences and uncheck/recheck core audio. The handshake seems to take care of it. Not sure if this applies to you or not. I've a 002 rack for an interface.

  • Digital distortion workaround

    Anyone know of a way to get around digital distortion in logic. I know that it shouldn't be done in the first place but sometimes it can be out of my control.
    I have mild digital distortion happening in quite a few places in a recording, i know i can use the pencil tool to flatten them but there is 100's of these and it would take ages. just wondered was there a compressor that can smooth out above the threshold, or if logic has a feature built in much like adobe audition has.

    Digital Distortion mostly occur when hitting over 0db or over compressing
    is this audio file recorded like that?
    there is not much you can do, just next time when you record stay safe, like around 3db and less on digital or to a computer
    because hitting 0db on hardware/Analog is not the same as computer/digital
    avoid over compressing or clipping before you record
    get a compressor between your source and the logic so it controllers the dynamics

  • Digital distortion on external firewire audio Edirol FA-101 and 10.4.11

    Hi
    Not sure if this is the right forum but I have an Edirol FA-101 external firewire audio unit and it seems like prior to installing 10.4.11 update for Tiger the audio was perfect. Now however I get a constant level of what sounds like digital distortion even without any audio sources playing out of my FA-101.. I saw the forum/support notes regarding audio problem with 10.4.10.. just wondered if anyone has similar experiences..the audio device does not have it's own drivers but uses the mac built in firewire audio support.
    Thanks

    that's what outputs 3 and 4 are there for. You can't control one stereo output to do two different things at the same time... it says in the edirol manual that the headphone jack outputs the same as output 1 and 2 from the back.
    Therefore if you want a separate stereo output pair to connect your speakers to, you must use outputs 3 and 4.
    Edirol didn't make the unit for the pc - actually the hardware was designed for the mac (hence it's core audio compatibility out of the box).
    Edirol's fa-101 and fa-66 (which I own) are mac product which just happen to work on the pc thanks to the driver they had to write after the fact to support windows xp. Plug the unit into a pc without the driver and nothing happens. plug it into a mac running osx and it's automagically configured for low latency, highest performance, midi and audio in and out.
    Have fun owning the best interface you can get for the mac for the money!

  • Album Art Causing Digital Distortion

    When I have ripped my personal CD's into iTunes and then added artwork, I have never had a problem. Yesterday, when I ripped some CD's and added the artwork, I started to get some very severe digital distortion when I played the tracks back. If I delete the tracks and re-rip the CD's without adding the artwork, they play fine. The only thing that has changed recently in my setup is that I have added a external RAID array. I've been using it for about three weeks with no problem. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what to do? Thank you.

    Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the problem exists without the album art. I have tried the audio error correction but that doesn't help at all. I will try a CD lens cleaner but that will have to wait a day or two. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you.

  • Newbie trying to get tracks to mp3 without clipping

    Hi Folks, I have imported a bunch of track from a HDD recorder (as wav files) into Garageband. It's a rock band setup - drums, bass, guitar etc. I can't get the drums or bass anywhere near loud enough without clipping. If you look at the wave form of the signal it's not above 0 or even close. I tried turning off all compression I was using and all other effects and it still sounds like crap. I can get a decent mix in GB but when I try to export either as MP3 or .aif I have no volume or I have clipping. I have tried both Normalizing and not.
    Please, any thoughts are most welcome. Thanks!

  • Can you replace the keyboard of a MacBook Pro without replacing the logic board?

    I had a bit of water damage on my MacBook Pro. I took it to the IT department, and he got the computer to work. The logic board and hard drive were intact. Here's the issues I'm having: the keyboard is next to  destroyed. The buttons barely respond, and when they do, it's random letters that type, and they type without me pressing anything. I asked him about replacing the keyboard and what that may cost me. He told me that replacing the keyboard would mean replacing the logic board because they're integrated together, so essentially, that would mean replacing the entire laptop itself. I've been looking on here, and have seen that people offered other uninformed customers to go look for replacement costs for the keyboard, leading me to believe that it is replaceable without replacing the logic board. Can anyone confirm or deny this claim? I would greatly appreciate it. I gave the laptop to the IT department for the weekend. He's going to dry and dry it out over the next few days, so hopefully that works. I don't know what generation macbook this is, but I got it brand new in early October. Thank you very much in advance.

    Why? Maybe he's ignorant and/or just didn't care to look into it? IDK
    Look at the illustrated installation directions at same site. You may be able to do it yourself.

  • Digital Distortion

    My ipod has been encountering quite a few problems recently. It started to work quite slowly and skip tracks, and then when i turned it on once it was playing but no sound was coming out. I have checked the headphones and they are fine, and the volume was fairly high. So I reset the ipod only to find that i got the folder with the exclamation mark coming up. So i plugged it into my pc, only to find that it crashed my pc every time. So i updated itunes just to make sure that it wasnt that which was doing it. Finally i have been able to access my ipod, but now when i play a song all i get is digital distortion.
    Does anyone know why this is or know how i can rectify this problem?

    Okay:
    a) What the heck is "digital distortion"? You say that like it has any meaning to the rest of us...
    b) Your iPod is probably busted in a big way. Replace it, is my advice.

  • Adjust gain without clipping existing peaks

    Hi,
    I'm having difficulty finding a filter in FCStudio 1 that will allow me to adjust the gain on an audio clip without clipping a few existing high level peaks.
    In particular, I have a poor recording of a speech in a large stone building with lots of background chatter, echo, etc. The majority of the clip has an average level of -12db, but there are spurts of applause which peak at -2dp.
    I'm trying to find a filter that will allow me to gain up the levels of the main speaker while "modulating" the current peaks to keep them from clipping?
    I have sucessfully used a simliar filter in Adobe Premier, and am sure there is one avail. in FC Studio, but I have not been able to locate it in the manuals.
    Thanks in advance for the assistance.
    Don

    Howdy...
    Remember that if you increase the volume of the track, you'll be increasing all the background noise as well as the speech.
    I have two suggestions:
    1) If the background noise is fairly constant, use the noise-reduction filter in SoundTrack. It does a great job of reducing the background noise, and is fairly easy to use. Read the help file manual, and it's fairly easy.
    2) One great way to get nice consistent levels across the board is to export the clip's audio as a .WAV file (or similar) and run it through a great free application called 'Levelator'. Google this, and you'll find it easily.
    Levelator is a great app for quickly balancing all the audio on a various track. I've used it many times to clean up audio with several speakers where 1 speaker is louder or quieter than the others. It's great for quick balancing and normalizing the sound...
    Hope that helps.
    Best,
    Ben

  • Ipod distorting and clipping

    I have a 5G ipod. Brand new. Don’t have EQ on. Don’t have Sound Check on. I notice a lot of clipping and distortion. It’s not my headphones. Happens for low end guitars/bass, or high voice or horns. Is this a problem typical with the ipod? Can it be fixed? Is my ipod defective? I’m now to these mp3 players and think they’r great other than the distorting and clipping.

    oops, posted this in the wrong fourm.

  • Script to Sort Images with/without Clipping Paths?

    I've searched for a while and can't find a script that will sort a folder of images into two new folders that contain images with and without clipping paths. Anyone have or know of a script that will do this for me? I'd would greatly appreciate it. W7, PS CS5 32 and 64 bit.
    Thanks in advance!
    Andy

    Hi Andy, Mike has a function to check for clipping groups but requires the file to be open...
    // Function: clippingPathIndex
    // Description: Gets the index of the activeDocument's clipping path
    // Usage: clippingPathIndex()
    // Input: None
    // Return: Index as Integer. -1 if there is no clipping path
    function clippingPathIndex(){
         var ref = new ActionReference();
              ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
         var desc = executeActionGet( ref );
         var clippingPath =  desc.getObjectValue(charIDToTypeID("Clpg"));
         return  clippingPath.getInteger(charIDToTypeID("ClpI" ));
    I think it should be possible to check the files without opening them using Bridge, looking at the Photoshop File Format it says....
    If the file contains a resource of type 8BIM with an ID of 2999, then this resource contains a Pascal-style string containing the
    name of the clipping path to use with this image when saving it as an EPS file. 4 byte fixed value for flatness and 2 byte fill rule.
    0 = same fill rule, 1 = even odd fill rule, 2 = non zero winding fill rule. The fill rule is ignored by Photoshop.
    I will see if I have time today to put something together for you.

  • Distorting and clipping on burned CDs

    I'm having problems with CDs that I've been burning. I've been making a lot of compilation CDs and haven't experienced problems before, but just recently I've noticed that a lot of the songs badly distort. These sound absolutely fine played from within itunes - it's when they are burned to a CD.
    There is crackling, distortion and clipping at the top end which sounds horrible. I checked my itunes and the soundcheck and volume adjustment controls are disabled. The CD media is a good quality brand and the songs are ripped from CD (with error correction) or purchased from the iTMS.
    iTunes is version 6.0.1 (3) with quicktime version 7.0.3. My mac is a revision B iMac G5 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845 superdrive (firmware rev DBN9). OS is 10.4.3
    The song sources were in AIFF, mp3, apple lossless m4a and mpa and WAV formats. I checked the waveforms in Audacity for clipping but there was none in the original file. The CDs distort regardless of whether it's a cheap ghetto blaster, PC, Mac, stereo or home cinema system and the music ranges from hip-hop, dance and jazz to classical and acoustic. This seems to make no difference to the likelihood of distortion.
    I've only noticed this problem going back to November.
    G5 Dual 2.5

    I am also having the same prob. I noticed though that
    if I playback the burned CDs in my car, it sounds
    okey. The ones I just burned from iTunes, if I play
    it back within iTunes - they all have weird
    distortions. So I guess it's a software bug not
    hardware . . . then again, it could also be my
    Superdrive . . .
    Apollo
    I was having the same problems, noise, noise and more noise right after I upgraded to iTunes 6. I checked in with my Mac consultant and she suggested I try repairing permissions. I did that and have had no problems since. I thought it was hardware based also, but I was wrong!
    Here's what she sent me:
    Here's how to repair permissions:
    Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    type this command:
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    make sure there is a space before that slash
    It will ask for your admin password
    Good luck.

  • Can a selection be used to create an arc without clipping art to the selection size?

    I need to arc a rectangular shaped piece of art into an arc.
    The art has bleed which can't be calculated into the arc, but needs to remain as a bleed. (Just like a clipping path obscures the view of the extraneous art, yet it's still there)
    Is there a way to tell Illustrator to designate a selection to use as the starting area…and then arc it into a shape…without first eliminating the art/photo/type hanging off into the bleed?
    In the following example, the orange rectangle is the area of the art I need to warp into the shape of the arc laying on top…yet I need the bleed to remain.
    [IMG]http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i53/Bug_Nuts/Adobe%20Illustrator%20Forum/Screenshot.png[ /IMG]

    Katrina,
    The question is how can I make illustrator take this
    art...and warp it...making the area that equivalent to the yellow trim
    box fit to the warp shape...YET...keep the bleed...and warp evenly.
    No, unfortunately not: different shapes are warped quite differently.
    My
    experience has been that because of the irregular things hanging off
    the sides, illustrator uses those when it calculates the arc. I need it
    to calculate the warp of this art using the yellow box as "from"...and
    the warp shape as "to".
    To get things to work properly, you can only apply one warp, and the obvious choice is to get everything inside (by getting rid of outlying parts, hence the Clipping Mask with subsequent snipping off) and then inflate the photograph part and get it as nice and even as possible; this has been the basis for the instructions below.
    Referring to the AI file (see bold type) and an amended version of post #17 (I can see that both the photograph(s) and the vector artwork are to be clipped):
    If you have some vector/raster artwork (this is the cat and the circles) within a rectangle (this is the upper, smaller rectangle) and a woody photograph in  the background (I can see that the woody photograph to have bleed is only in the right side), all of which are supposed to be warped using Arc, so  that the warped woody photograph extends past the vector artwork to also  function as a bleed (the bleed seems to be 18pt, corresponding to the lower, larger rectangle), the bounding rectangle of the vector/raster artwork  forming the  basis of the Arc, and if you are willing to adjust the  woody photograph which  may have a slight distortion and live with a non  constant bleed, you may:
    1) Copy the rectangle (this is the upper path in the first Group), to get a top rectangle and a bottom rectangle (the bottom rectangle replaces the lower path in the second Group which cannot be used here, step 6) is to create a path that can do it);
    2)  Select the top rectangle and the underlying vector/raster artwork, Group  them, and reduce the  opacity to 50% (so you can see the woody photograph  beneath;
    3) Copy the bottom rectangle to the front, to get a middle rectangle;
    4)  Copy the middle rectangle to the front to and  Object>Path>Average, to get an supplementary middle rectangle with  W = H = 0;
    5) Select 3) and 4) and Object>Compound Path>Make, to get a middle compound path;
    6)  Scale  the bottom rectangle up by a suitable amount, possibly 1.1 times  for W  and 1.2 times for H so that it covers the desired part of the  photograph  including the bleed (see more later);
    7) Select the scaled bottom rectangle and the underlying photograph and Object>Clipping Mask>Make;
    Now   you need to get rid of the outlying parts of the woody photograph (copy  before these destructive steps and hide the original set):
    8) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown, click Multiply (or just anything but Normal);
    9) Object>Flatten Transparency (just keep the defaults, especially if you have vector artwork along with the image(s));
    Now  you need to resize the Clipping Mask to match the rectangle/artwork Group:
    10)   Scale the Clipping Mask down by the reverse amount of that in 6) (1.1   times for W and 1.2 times for H) so that it has the same size as the rectangle/artwork Group, but with the woody photograph compressed;
    The main shaping step:
    11) Select everything and Effect>Warp>Arc (this will give the top rectangle the Arc shape, and everything else will be warped correspondingly);
    Creating/shaping the woody photgraph/bleed along with the middle compound path:
    12)    Select the Clipping Mask and the middle compound path (easy to do by  clicking it in the Layers palette/panel), then Object>Expand  Appearance, then
    12a) Click the uppermost Anchor Point (which  corresponds to the inner W = H = 0 path of the middle compound path, and  its says Anchor, if you have Smart Guides on), to set a more correct  centre for scaling and thereby reduce the additional distortion of the  photograph, and then
    12b) DoubleClick the Scale Tool and scale up by the  same amount as in 6) (1.1 times for W and 1.2 times for H).
    Placing the woody photograph:
    8)   Move the woody photograph vertically until the bleed is roughly equal  on all  sides and the photograph is placed correctly behind the   artwork/rectangle Group;
    You may need to redo some of the  steps to adjust and get them right. In this process, you may move the  supplementary middle rectangle 4) upwards before creating the compound  path to further reduce the additional distortion of the woody photograph.
    When things are right (if they will ever be):
    9) Increase the opacity of the artwork/rectangle Group to 100%.
    Final note: I believe the exact distortion of the woody photograph is less crucial than it would have been for the cat.

  • I edited audio from a clip in logic. when putting both back together in FCE it is out of sync.

    Hi there,
    i am more of a logic user than a FCE user. so i had a clip recorded at a friends in 720p (1280x720).
    the audio codec used was 24-bit integer (little indian), stereo at 44,1k
    the video one was: apple openDML JPEG, 1280x720
    since i am used to the logic audio environment i decided to edit the audio in logic.
    but now when putting it into FCE the clip is shorter than the video clip and starts to run away from the video. after a while its totally desynced.
    i tried to edit the audio in logic in a 48k session and 44,1k,. bounced it 24bit and 16 bit and i feel i tried everything that come to my mind but nothing worked.
    so right now i am really needy for any kind of idea that might work.
    i hope i described the process of what i have been doing sufficiently and have given enough information (FCE 4.0, Logic Pro)
    excuse my poor english, i am not used to writing anymore.
    i hope someone takes the time and there is a possibility to fix this without editing the audio in FCE.
    cheers and thanks in advance

    well.... i had some problems when i exported the video and audio toghether. could not get the resolution right. so i changed the sequence settings to apple intermediate codec 720p30.
    thing is this seems to work with audio 48k but the source file just got 44,1k.
    before grasping the fit to fill feature, i got to check what that means.
    thanks a lot for your help already
    do i need to export the project in 48k audio maybe before i can use logic the edit the audio?

  • Increasing volume without clipping

    I have a sine wave like so:
    This sine wave is already at -0.3 dBFS, but even with my computer at max volume that is not loud enough for what I need to do. Is there any way I can increase the volume of this sine wave without causing clipping? I know I can make it come out much louder from the speakers I'm using by increasing the dB but then I get clipping which messes up the frequency that I would like to play it at.
    On a side note, does anyone know how I can figure out what dB sound waves the speakers attached to my computer are emitting based on the dBFS of my file and the volume of my computer settings?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated and would really help with the research project I am doing. Please also let me know if my question doesn't make sense.
    Thanks!

    You can't increase a sound file more than it's maximum which you are already at. There is no way of correlating what level a digital audio file is to what sound pressure level your speakers are producing without calibrating your whole audio system. For that you need a Sound Pressure level meter. professional ones cost an awful lot but you can do rough measurements using low cost SPL meters fron the likes of Radio Shack.
    However if your speakers are distortng when you turn up the level to what you require then either they or the amplifier driving them isn't up to the job I'm afraid.
