Digital image blur on import

I am using a AG-DVX100B dv camera connected to a imac intel running imovie 6 and I have a odd problem. When I do a import from the camera to the imac I sometimes get flashes of square out of focus digital pixel groups. Looks like a digital signal on your TV freezes or a DVD glitch image. Anyway I am pritty sure it is not the imac or the dvx as they are both very new and it is not the cable from what I can tell. Here is the confusing part. Say the glitch happens on a certian clip, it will not happen if I rewind the camera and try it again on the same clip. This is causing a great deal of fustration as I cannot leave my camera during import as I have to watch and rewind for missed captures about every 8 mins. Has anyone heard of this happening before?

got it!
i was working on everything with normal settings (rgb, high
quality output in flash, etc). how i've always done stuff. that's
why i couldn't figure it out, cause it's never done this to me
before.
so i re-exported the .jpg's from photoshop with the "icc
profile" checked off and the "optimize" checked off. and that did
the trick. i don't know why, but there must be something with the
icc profile that doesn't read right in flash on a mac... or
something. i don't know... i'm just glad it's fixed now.

  • Image blurred after import into pages documents?

Hi there, I've been working on the user manual of my software these days. I found out that everytime I took screenshots, they were clear --- as clear as the screen, and after inserting to my pages documents, the images got blurred badly.
I've checked the size, and they were identical, which means there are no resizes.
I thought it was the difference of the resolution: screen was 72 dpi, and maybe pages uses higher dpi? So I converted my images to 300 dpi, and they are still blurred after insertion.
    Thanks everyone!
I am really in a hurry since this user manual is going to be printed in the next few days~!
    thanks!

Where are they blurred? In Pages or on the print out?
If in Pages, are you sure you display the pages at 100% (identical to the screen shot)?
I am not able to reproduce your problem unless I either resize the screen shot in the Pages document or change the page view to something different from 100%.
I do not have a printer, but my guess is that the printout would look fine, even if you resize the screen shot, so it looks blurry on screen.

  • I use an iMac 10.6.8 with iPhoto '09 to download digital images from Canon DSLRs. Until the last two weeks there has been no trouble whatever importing images by  a USB connection from either camera to the Mac. Now the process will not kick in. Any ideas?

I use an Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 09 to download digital images from two Canon DSLRs. Until the last week, there has been no problem whatever in launching the import procedure once the USB connection has been connected and the camera switched on. Now the process will not kick in at all for either camera.  I can't find a solution through iPhoto help or from other sources.
Any ideas to fix?  (I admit I have not tested the USB cable at this time).

    What does "kick in" mean?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • How to set image size for importing photos from a digital camera

I'm using Iphoto 6 and am a novice user of my new digital camera. The camera is set to HQ image quality. Initially when I imported photos from the camera into IPhoto, the images were very large (over 1 meg) and produced good quality 4X6 prints. Now when I import photos from the same camera still set to HQ image quality, the photos are very small (less than 100 kb) after being imported into IPhoto. I think I must have changed some kind of setting in IPhoto that affects the size of an imported image, but I can't find where that is or how to change it back so that the size is not changed when imported. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!

Dave, thanks for clarifying Toad's response for me - I was just too ignorant to connect the dots from his responses. As you said, there were 2 versions - 1 in the original folder and 1 in data; the original folder had the photos that were 1 mb. We must have pulled from that folder previously to print photos not realizing they existed in 2 places. So when we found these thumbnail photos, we just thought they were the real thing. Where can you go to learn about the struction and hierarchy of the photos in terms of what Iphoto does to an image when you import it? Is it in Iphoto help somewhere? Thanks so much for your help with this, and you too Toad for leading me down the path.
If you're getting the size from Finder, I think Old
Toad's question makes a lot of sense. Is the file
you're looking at, somewhere in a folder called
"Data" in iPhoto Library? That 56k sounds about the
    right size for a thumbnail.
If you do a search for the image name, both the
actual photo and the small thumbnail are stored with
    the same image, e.g. abc.jpg

  • Import Labels / Tags / Ratings from Microsoft Digital Image?

I'm a new user with LOTS of pictures I've been organizing using Microsoft Digital Image. They are all tagged with labels and ratings, that it would be a REAL pain to have to redo.
Is there a way to tell Photoshop Elements 4 to import the pictures with the tags?
    Thanks!
    --Dean

    Jeffrey,
A quick Google search shows that Microsoft Digital Image and Windows XP used (incredibly) a proprietary set of metadata fields in photos:
    http://www.shahine.com/omar/WarningToYouIfYouUsedMicrosoftDigitalImageSuiteAndUpgradeToVis ta.aspx
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6074850
There are a couple of suggested solutions to get the proprietary tags into industry-standard fields that other programs understand:
    1. Use Windows Live Photo Gallery (the one you download, not Windows Photo Gallery which is builtin to Vista). WLPG understands the old proprietary format. Import your photos into WLPG, and then add a new dummy tag to your photos this will write out the tags using industry-standard fields. Not clear if this will preserve captions, ratings, and date/time.
    2. Use exiftool, a free tool that is widely recognized as the most robust tool for modifying metadata. Unfortunately, the learning curve is steep.
I havent tried these solutions, but they seem quite plausible.

  • Elements 8 Low image quality on import

    Hello,
I am using Premiere Elements 8, and importing large 300dpi images that once imported and scaled, look blurred and really badly compressed. Is there something I am missing?
    Thanks

As DPI, or PPI, are meaningless in Video, one should concentrate on the pixel x pixel dimensions. Also, with the exception of PrPro CS5 & 5.5, with CUDA/MPE acceleration, Scaling of stills in an image editing program, like Photoshop, will yield better quality. This ARTICLE goes into more detail, and also gives tips on doing batch Scaling of entire folders of still images for Video use.
    Good luck,

  • Digital Imaging and iPhoto Advice

Please excuse me if this is posted on the wrong discussion section.
I am a brand new owner of a MacBook pro with Mavericks operating system and I am just trying to get my head around a few things.
Now, I have 5 years of digital images archived on an External Hard Drive and my question is, is there an App that will allow me to view all of my archived thumbnails on the ex Hard Drive a little easier than the default small thumbnail view on the macBook?
I dont really want to import the 5 years of archived images onto the MacBook to view through Iphoto as that will clog my computer up with lots of images.
Any views, help or advice as to the best way to view the archives?
    Peter

By default iPhoto will import all your images into its own folder structure. that is something I think you should avoid. there is a setting in iPhoto to stop this behavior. It is in the iPhoto preferences on the Advanced tab.
Make sure that is unchecked and iPhoto will just make a database of your images and not copy them into its own folder structure.
Personally I think iPhoto is one of the worst image cataloging and editing programs. You would be much better off using something like Adobe Lightroom.

  • Elgato video capture versus digital 8 camcorder to import hi 8 movies

    Hi!
I have hi 8 video tapes which i want to import into my MacBook.
I would like to work on them with iMovie 09, cut them, set titles etc. put music on and so on.
Earlier I plugged my hi 8 camcorder into my panasonic DMR E85H dvd recorder with built in hdd.
Then i importet them via handbrake into my MacBook.
Then i importet them into iMovie 08 an did some cutting and so on.
Then i recognized, that there where horizontal interferences in the movie.
On the dvds the video is ok!
It doesn´t matter if i play the videos in Quicktime or in iTunes or iMovie.
If i would use a Elgato Video Capture to import or a digital 8 camcorder to import the videos to my MacBook would i be able to get a better result?
Which one should i prefer - i have to buy each of them!
Would the size of the camcorder-imported videos be bigger then with the Elgato device?
    Now i´m using iMovie 09.
Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Based on your comments about horizontal interferences, it may be that you are seeing interlace artifacts. The solution may be to deinterlace the clips.
You might try checking the settings in handbrake to deinterlace.
You might also take the clip you have produced in HB and deinterlacing using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer.
Your MPEG2 on DVD is already compressed from the original on tape. Then HandBrake decompresses and recompresses it to h.264. You generally want to cut out compression steps in your workflow whenever possible, because each generation of compression will introduce noise and loss.
You could also reimport from DVD using MPEG Streamclip (and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component). You could deinterlace at this step if needed.
You could certainly import through a camcorder with passthru capability. It will be DV which will be a very high data rate and potentially high quality, but it will never be higher quality than the underlying analog material. But you will have eliminated a compression step so you will be closer to the original.
ElGato products will certainly work as well. I use the ElGato EyeTV hybrid to capture from a VHS Deck, as well as to record high definition TV shows. My ElGato will capture to MPEG2, although the newer models may capture directly to MPEG4 (not sure). You would then use the ElGato software to export to iMovie in an editable format such as h.264 or Apple Intermediate Codec.

LR 5.6 on Mac desktop all of a sudden will not read any card from any reader but will work on my laptop. I can work on previous images but not import new ones. Even if I create a catalog on laptop and import to my desktop on a thumb drive, the images are only accessible as long as the thumb drive is inserted.

Sounds like you may need to repair the Disk Permissions on your drive where your images are stored.
