Digital Juice SFX Versus Soundtrack Pro

Can anyone tell me which is better and why?
Thanks

They're two different things alltogether. The DJ fx are simply sound effects and musical stings and voice samples. Sound track pro is an audio application that happens to have some samples included.

  • Question about Dolby Digital 5.1 in Soundtrack Pro 3

    Hi folks,
I am pretty confused in regards to using Soundtrack Pro 3 to create and export a AC-3 dolby digital 5.1 file to be used in burning a Blu Ray DVD using Toast Titanium 11. I admit that overall I am somewhat Final Cut Studio savy but for the life of me I cannot find reliable and understandable tutorials re: the dolby digital thing. I am hoping that there are people out there who will be patient with my admitted ignorance
So, what I am working on?
107 minute feature documentary film edited using FCP 7 with 65 tracks of audio mixed down (using STP3) to six (1 & 2 dedicated to Voice, 3 & 4 dedicated to sfx and ambient sounds, 5 & 6 dedicated to music.)
What do I want to do?
My film is going be to be screened at a festival next month and so I want to burn a blu ray disc (using Toast Titanium 11) with AC-3 Dolby digital 5.1 audio as apposed to 2 channel stereo.
    What I don't understand?
I'm not entirely sure how the Dolby 5.1 export using STP3 works. My questions are:
Will it take a 2 channel stereo final mix and convert and export it so that it will be a Dolby Digital? If so, what about the 6 channels of audio that I mentioned before. Is it better to mix those 6 down to 2 before doing the  Dolby 5.1 export?
If so, what if the theatre equipment (or any home dvd player) is not able to play Dolby 5.1? Will it then play the Blu Ray in 2 channel stereo or will there be issues?
Is there a 'standard' Dolby Digital setup when having to choose the 'Audio Coding Mode?'
    And/or:
What settings would you suggest for very high quality Blu Ray export?
Anyways, I know there is a helluva lot of questions there but I obviously wanna get this right. Huge thanks in advance to any advice/suggestions you can give.
    Cheers!

    HI,
    briefly from what comes to mind is;
your tracks need to be assigned via the Surround Sound Panner options, either or both in the tracks and submixes.  Read about Surround Sound in Soundtrack Pro and also the effect options via the sound design reverberation. (The latter can create surround from a stereo submix as well )
The next chapter is the export option.  FILE>EXPORT
The master can be optionally exported in Dolby surround AC-3 with a number of options you need to set in this window.
Then burning is the next chapter. I trust Toast can manage but have not tried yet.
When burning to Blue Ray one actually should use full resolution PCM files  WAV format for highest quality
Audio Surround Sound. The Export then would need to be uncompressed from your final STP mix in single mono files (which is an option in STP ) and then imported into a special burning program.....
THese are my 2 cents in general.

  • Lion & Soundtrack Pro

If anyone is tracking such reports, after cautiously experimenting with Lion on my Macbook Pro I decided to take the leap and try to upgrade my Mac Pro. Right off the bat Soundtrack Pro did not work, specifically in that it didn't recognize my MOTU Traveler firewire mixer. But once I'd downloaded the latest drivers from MOTU everything was fine. Also, iZotope RX works, but the scrolling is kind of funky, with a huge lag. Noise reduction, though, which is the main thing I use with RX, seems to work fine.
These were quick and dirty tests -- hopefully the system won't poop out when I have to use it for some recording work next Tuesday, though I record on a backup stand-alone digital recorder so, whatever happens, it'll be OK...
Overall I quite like Lion and think it's an improvement over Snow Leopard. And I very much appreciate its more robust security features.

I've had issues fixing clicks and pops in soundtrack pro.  I'm pretty sure this worked before the upgrade. Now it seems to actually add clicks and pops which is weird... Anybody else experiencing this?

  • Soundtrack Pro still crashes on start (new error)

Ok, I had the trouble because of iWork11 and Logic Pro 9 that Compressor was not istalled and because of that Soundtrack Pro crashed.....
Now I installed Compressor and Soundtrack pro comes along with another Error:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Symbol not found: _NSNavCommentFileProperty
      Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BrowserKit.framework/Versions/A/BrowserKit
      Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit
I already did the digital rebellion thing with getting the browserkit.framework from the install DVD but no change.....
    any suggestions?

I had your original problem and called tech support.  (Missing ProFX file).  They sent me to reinstall compressor using this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3580?viewlocale=en_US
I didn't have your second problem though.  If you have a serial number and support ID, I found the guys at Apple to be helpful.  They're regular number 1-800-275-2273 then say, "Logic," to get right to the audio people.  I don't know if this helps.

  • I have Soundtrack Pro 1.1 It opens OK but the everything takes 4 seconds to work. It's very slow and unusable. Is this a well known problem?

I have Soundtrack Pro 1.1 It opens OK but the everything takes 4 or so seconds to work. It's very slow and unusable in its present state. Is this a well known problem?

STP 3.0.1 was the version designed to work with OSX 10.6.8. Anything earlier than that and issues may arrise. Hard to tell what yours are.
You may want to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to reset the prefs back to the default state. If nothing else, it is a good troubleshooting step.
    Good luck.

  • Getting Soundtrack Pro to record with M-Audio Firewire Solo?

I'm having trouble trying to record 'live' into Soundtrack Pro. I've got a mic into analog mixer into M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface into ibook set up.
In STP, I can select firewire channels 1 to 2 (under "Recording" tab) for the input device but nothing is recording when I hit the record button. the mic>mixer bit is working fine. I'm quite certain the mixer>audio bit is working so I think its a problem with compatibility between the M-Audio Firewire Solo device and Soundtrack Pro software....although it shows up as an option in the select audio input/output settings in STP... I've also got the latest Tiger driver for the Firewire Solo device and the latest update for STP.
I CAN record from the in-built mic on the ibook so that bit works...
Currently, I've been recording individual tracks into Audacity then exporting them all as separate tracks into Soundtrack Pro for post production as AIFF files (drag and drop them into STP in the order I require). I'm doing this as a temporary measure until I can find out how to get M-Audio Firewire Solo talking to Soundtrack Pro.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I got it working with Soundtrack Pro and Audio Hijack Pro in the end. It seems that only the front side of M-Audio FireWire Solo recording interface actually seems to work and only the right channel (mono). Its a little bit annoying but it works...not sure why the back ones did not work (s/pdif, balanced and unbalanced phone jacks plugs), perhaps its something to do with the fact that the front has gain level knobs and the back doesn't....hmm...maybe not enough power to drive the back connectors?
Anyway, if any of you happen to use M-Audio FireWire audio interfaces (analog to digital converter) and you face a similar problem, then its probably going to be a similar thing...

  • 5.1 monitoring in Soundtrack Pro -- Why Not?

I have Soundtrack Pro 2 and was looking forward to mixing and previewing surround audio. I purchased the Logitech z-5500 and found that it was impossible. After a exhausting web search, I found in an Apple doc:
"The built-in optical hardware output included with some Macs cannot be used for monitoring surround with Logic Pro and Soundtrack Pro, because it requires a surround encoded audio stream, such as that output by a DVD. Neither Logic Pro nor Soundtrack Pro can playback surround encoded audio; they output discrete audio streams that can be encoded later in the authoring process by an application such as Compressor."
Here's why I am confused: Both Compressor AND DVD Studio allow for monitoring of Soundtrack exported files (ac3 AND AIFF surround groups) in Pro Logic (not to be confused with Logic Pro) surround from the TOSLINK output.
MY QUESTION: Why can't Soundtrack Pro allow for similar monitoring? (I know I won't hear the rear channels discreetly, but the Pro Logic output works well enough to mix surround.) I know it would need some rendering, but it would be better than having to export mixes to DVD Studio every 10 minutes.

    Hi.
This is often been discussed. It is like Apple says.
For mixing Surround you need 6 discreet and uncompressed channels! The benefit is you hear the audio like it is in your timeline (uncompressed) and can make changes. The second problem with this is, there are no real time encoders for surround formats. So no audio application out there can create an dolby digital stream from your timeline in realtime. This must be done after the mixing process, at the time when your mix is finished and sounds right.
So if you want to mix in surround with totaly discreet channels then you need an audio interface with so many outputs as the format you mix for will have, for example 6 channels if it is dolby digital 5.1.

  • Soundtrack pro won't even open

I haven't been using Soundtrack Pro 3 for a while, and now when I needed to use it, it wouldn't even start.
All I get is a dock icon and the startup window for a very short moment, quicker than a blink of an eye. No error message or anything. It just doesn't open. Before it has worked fine and my system should run it perfectly.
Booting the computer or logging out or reinstalling SP didn't help.
I'm having and iMac with Intel Core i7 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

There are a number of system cache and temporary files that do not get completely purged until you turn off the Mac.  During a restart, power is still supplied to all the hardware components (RAM, HDD, Graphics cards... etc), so problem files can still hang around, or harware compoments (which can also cause problems) are still powered up and not reset by a restart.
For example - A customer called complaing that the fans in his mac were running full speed and would not stop.  I told him to shut down the mac, but he only restarted it, and the fans stayed at full speed.  I told him he needed to actually shut down/power off the mac, wait a couple seconds, then start up the mac.  That fixed the fan problem, and he was happy.
There are also those rare occations when even shutting down the mac does not reset components, as even with the mac shut down, there is still power to the system.  In that case, the Mac has to be physically unplugged from the power outlet, and left to sit unplugged for several seconds.
Another. let techy way to delete/reset your prreferences is to use a great free utility from Digital Rebelliion:
    Preference Manager
Preference Manager allows you to manage preference files for Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro X, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro for Mac.
Preference files store information about user preferences, window layouts, toolbar placements and launch settings. Sometimes these can become corrupted, causing problems. Preference Manager allows you to trash corrupted preferences and keep backups of working preference files in order to quickly restore your settings.
PM will allow to specify only the STP files or the entire Final Cut Studio or just delete a single file at the application level.
    Glad you got things working..

  • Files from soundtrack pro play really slow in FCP

I tired searching the threads and couldnt find an answer
I'm trying to lay down a music bed in FCP before i edit a sequence.
I went into SOundtrack pro and listened to it.. looping music bed 40.aiff
    sounds awesome.
go over to fcp.. click on import and i find the file amongst my libary and stuff
then i laid it into my sequence and the playback is really slow.
    i can;t figure it out.
    any help guys?

Sorry it took so long for you to find an answer, happens sometimes. Your bump can bring the wrath of the forum curmudgeons down upon your weenie little head but you got a good response to a post that got lost off the bottom of the page.
You're going to find digital video is full of weird little gotchas like this audio sampling rate thingy. Frame rates. And pixel aspect ratios. And color spaces. &c. I remember when video was just luminance.

Try using Preference Manager by Digital Rebellion (it's free) to delete your preference files for Soundtrack.

  • Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 crashes continuously in Lion

I purchased a new iMac 27 with the 3.4 GHz i7 processor a few months ago and finally have a project where I'm using Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 which was transfered over from my old iMac.
On the old iMac, STP2 would crash from time to time but it was relatively stable.  On the new machine it seems that I can't do more than a couple edits without the machine crashing up.  The Youhng W1 plug in and simply saving the file seem to be the worst offenders.
Any advice on what might be going on here?  Not using the Youhng W1 plugin to avoid crashes is possible but not saving is not!

All the pro apps should be installed from the Original disks. Migrating is NEVER advised.
Use Digital Rebellion's FCS remover to delete the app and start the install fresh.
That being said, STP v2 is very old and Apple has done nothing to make Mountain Lion backwardly compatible with ancient software.
What this means is - even with a clean install, it may be unstable.
    Good luck.

  • Soundtrack Pro channel mapping with a new setup

    Hello All,
Looking for a bit of guidance regarding editing / mixing for 5.1 in SoundTrack Pro and Adobe Audition.
I had been editing with both pieces of software and had a successful 5.1 set up. I could place audio in each speaker independently via the software, and it would playback properly in the software and upon export.
Recently I've switched my setup from an old Klipsch ProMedia GMX D-5.1 (that was connected directly to the editing machine via optical), to a Denon 1610 receiver and Energy speaker surround setup (again, connected directly to the editing machine via optical).
The problem I'm encountering is that I can't get either piece of editing software to output properly and / or to the specified speaker / channel. Everything, all channels, are coming out of the Fl or Fr speakers. Playback of previously created 5.1 tracks (QT or .ac3 files), in QuickTime or VLC, are mapped properly.
What am I missing? I have a suspicion that the issue is the elimination of the Klipsch Digital preamp / control module. If this is the case, do I need a DAC that goes toslink in to toslink out and into my receiver? Id so, do you have any recommendations for a DAC?
    Thanks.
    Floyd

I haven't tried this, but one way around this might be to teach MainStage about the offending button.
Set up a new button in MS Layout & 'Learn' your patch change to it.
Having done that, disable the new button in Edit.
If you set this up at Concert level, it ought to prevent any patch change messages getting through to the rest of MainStage.

I went to the Apple Store and asked about this, and they said I should reinstall Soundtrack Pro. I tried trashing Soundtrack Pro, and popped in the installation disc for Logic Studio 9 (upgrade from Logic Express 9). I tried, but the button for Soundtrack Pro was disabled. The Apple Store told me I should go to Genius Bar and get my iMac fixed, but before I do that, I wanted to ask here. Please Reply!
P.S. I do have the latest Logic update.

Soundtrack has crashed for me as well. I went to Digital Rebellion, took out Soundtrack, deleted Soundtrack in trash, reinstalled from originals TWICE and come up empty handed. I have to do a hard shut down of Soundtrack just to get out of the program- that's where you shut the computer down at the CPU.
It's really looking like Soundtrack is a dead program. It's very depressing to a voiceover with lots of saved tracks that can only be opened in Soundtrack. I use a Mac Pro 8 core (Snow Leopard) and all of my other programs work fine. Anyone know a solution or have a suggestion for a multitrack program that can do what Soundtrack once did for me?
Hey Studio X. Been a while. It was going well for me but it seems like the end of the road. Any sage advice?

  • Can anyone suggest any Royalty Free music programs like Digital Juice?

We use Digital Juice here at the office for music, graphics and Stock Footage, but I think I've used pretty much all of the "good" music tracks they have and was wondering if there are any other packages like Digital Juice out there that other people use.
I'm basically just looking for something simple, where I don't have to create my own music, but that I can quickly sample the songs; like Juice lets you do.
    Thanks.

As recommended above, SmartSound has two ways to use their music with most NLE's, including Premiere Pro. First, there is a free Premiere plug-in to access and use the music from within Premiere, Project Panel>New>Smartsound (once you install the plug-in). Or, you can do so much more with SonicFire Pro, but it is a standalone app. Marvelous how you can change the same piece of music with the Strata and BackStage (now being discontinued) series.
Right now, they are having a sale on selected music disks. Go to www.smartsound.com and take a look. I *think* that they might have a few more sales over the next few weeks.
I'm not sure that it's still going on, but SonicFire (not the full version) was also free with the purchase of any of the Strata Series disks. One can then upgrade to the full version.
Basically, there are/were four levels of music:
BackStage: (about the same as Strata Series, but greater bit-depth and sampling-rate, IIRC) - works beautifully in SFP.
    Strata Series: multi-level music @ 48KHz 16-bit - works beautifully in SFP.
Regular disks: non-multi-level @ 22KHz & 44.1KHz - works in SFP, but does not support Mood Mapping (see the tutorial on their site)
Compilations: non-multi-level @ 22KHz, and fewer variations than the regular disks. These are relatively inexpensive, but hard to locate on the site. There are/were some broad-ranging collections, so different ways to purchase these.
Download: not a music type, per se, but one can purchase individual cuts from many of the SmartSound disks. Make sure that you do download all previews from SmartSound, so you can demo everything they offer.
I will make that a third!

  • Does Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1 work with Mountain Lion?

    Hi there,
I purchased my iMac (Lion 2.7 GHz i5) and Logic Studio Pro 9 at the same time, everything installed fine but Soundtrack Pro did not open with Lion.
Since updated to Mountain Lion and obviously still not working.
Is there anything I can do to get this working as it might be usefull in the future?
Should I try reinstalling Soundtrack Pro or the full Logic Studio?
    Many thanks,
    Karl.

My STP seems to be working ok in Mountain lion yeah, although I've not actually used it properly yet, but it stays open at least. I think you're right about compressor aswell.
Do you know if I'll need compressor at some point after using soundtrack? Or are there other ways around it?
    Karl.
    hi Karl:
here's my follow up to your question "Do you know if I'll need compressor at some point after using soundtrack?"  i'm not sure, since i don't really know what you'll be doing on your projects w/ LogicPro.  but here's my suggestion which help you gain some insight.
go to support.apple.com/manuals/   ...find the .pdf manual for "Compressor 4" latest should be Jun2012.  might be about 6MB.  just read thru & see what features it does, & how certain steps can help you in your project.  this ought to help you foresee if you'll need Compressor or just want it, in the future.  Chap 12 seems to discussing Dolby digital professional outputs, Surrouand sound, & spatial mxing.
    good luck,
    marv...
