Digital Mixing board recommendations?

I've had Logic Express 7 for about a year. I've been using my 4-track as a mixing board up till this point. My 4-track just got stolen so I want to replace it with a digital board that I can use to record multiple tracks independently and then mix them after I have recorded them. I don't need a lot of tracks, just some options. I want to make sure that the board I get is compatible with the computer and logic express and that I can plug it in and go, or, do I need other stuff too? I don't really want to spend a ton either.... and suggestions?

Hi,
Well...for a good quality mixing board that is digital, you're looking to spend a few grand. There are some options which I have used before with sucess, like the Tascam DM-24,now not in production, which can run you about 1,500 USD for a used one. Also you can check out products by Yamaha as well, they are good too.
It seems though, that if you are only planning to do 4-8 channels of simultaneous recording (recoring-at-one-time) you can get away with using a multichannel audio interface, and mixing all "inside-the-box" i.e. in the computer itself.Logic is quite good at that.
Here's a rough demo of mine done completely in Logic Pro,and even exported using Logic's mp3 encoder:

  • Best recommended mixing board with usb or lightning output to iMac or iPad for GarageBand?

    hi,
set-up - 2010 iMac w/ intel core i7 processor @ 2.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM, latest mac os x 10.9 "maverick" update and the latest version updated of garage band; also, iPad third generation 64 GB wi-fi only with the latest version of iOS 7.0.3 and iOS GarageBand app v. 2.0 (3090.25). i also have the adapter apple sold for the iPad that gives it a usb interface - this was for usb sticks that had photos, but i'm hoping it'll work well with GarageBand also.
i'm wanting to do some podcast audio recording with multiple inputs (audio round table discussion setting), as well as some home studio recording (mostly acoustic guitar work). i already have several good mics.
i am looking for a mix board that will interface well with digital output to the GarageBand on the iMac, preferably to both the iMac and the GarageBand app on the iPad also. i want the mix board to have some form of _modern_ digital out, preferably usb (but could work, maybe, with lightning/thunder). the iPad is for when i want to record something on the road for a podcast, the iMac stays in my home office/studio. i'm looking for a mix board fitting these specs that i could pick up fairly reasonably on ebay or the like.
i've looked a bit at tascam and alesis. i was wondering what folks here might recommend and what their experience is? also, if not a mix board, then what would you recommend for a multiple digital interface input of the mics, say four or five at a time, going into the iMac or iPad for live recording?
i look forward to your advisement, stories and tips on this. thank you.

It looks like these boards are "class compliant" USB, meaning there are no drivers to install, it's basic plug-and-play.
To use it in Garageband you would have to go to (Garageband) preferences and set it up as the recording/playback device.  The Mac's system preferences have nothing to do with a (decent) audio program's audio device selection.
    Garageband probably defaults to built-in-audio.
The problem you will have is that the USB output is probably stereo only. You can record multiple inputs, but only as a stereo Mix. (or two mono tracks). I say probably because I don't really know. It doesn't prevent you from laying down tracks one (stereo) or two (mono) at a time.

  • Mixing board

I have Apple Logic Express, and I will be upgrading to full Logic. I am looking for a mixing board that supports Logic so I can use pan knobs and faders to control recording and playback rather then the mouse. Any suggestions?

Is there any reason why you need a "mixing board" - ie one that actually mixes audio internally outside of Logic, versus a "control surface" which looks like a mixer (faders, knobs, transport etc) but actually is a just controller for Logic (ie no audio is mixed by the controller, it stays totally within Logic?)
If you want a control surface, then I recommend the Mackie Control, or the Euphonics Mix series controllers.
If you actually want an analog or digital mixer, that's a different set of recommendations. You also don't mention a budget, so I'm just saying what I recommend. There are budget options, but there are vastly inferior (but again, you don't mention any requirements, so perhaps a budget controller is all you need.)

  • I just bought a docking station for my iPad so I could plug into a mixing board and record a live show.  I was disappointed at the time limitation for the recordings.  What is the maximum amount you can record a song into GB for the iPad?

I purchased a docking station for my iPad so that I could record a live recording of my band directly from a mixing board this weekend using GarageBand.  Unfortunately, I was unaware of the song length limitations of the iPad version of this program.  Basically, was unable to capture more than 15 minutes of the gig.  I've read other conversations on this forum and can't really determine the maximum amount of time this application can record.  Can anyone tell me how long GarageBand for ipad can record at one single time and how to adjust the settings to achieve this?  Also, is anyone aware of any other apps than could be used to record a longer please share.  Thanks.
    CP

I received an email reply from George, the Founder and CEO of Studiomini, he indicated to me that their app does not have any time limitations in regards to recording like GB does, you are only limited by the amount of free space on your iPad.  Fo what it's worth, I think the Alesis IO Dock is an amazing piece of equipment.  I would highly recommend purchasing the IO Dock and plugging your mixing board into the dock to capture your rehearsal.  Hopefully the feedback I received from Studiomini is accurate and I can capture my entire rehearsal at one time.  I hope this feedback helps.  One last note, apparently their will be a update soon to view Studiomni in the landscape view on the iPad instead of just the portrait view.

  • Audio Out To A Mixing Board

Is there some way to hook up an external mixing board to a Mac and use that for audio mixing instead of using the faders in FCP? My wife can do this at work with an AVID but I'm trying to figure this out with FCP so I can automate a mix.
Maybe I'm asking for too much?
    Thanks in advance.

I have a Tascam FW1082 and I can use it to adjust the audio levels in FCP...using the mackie control interface.

  • Recording from Mixing board to GB

I am a teacher in a middle school. In my industrial tech. class we have a radio broadcasting station. At this station I have a mixing board as well as other euipment. Now my mixing board has an output that runs to a reciever so I can play it over the speakers. I unplugged this and plugged in a RCA to 1/8" cable and plugged this into my macbook mic in. When i go to record music in GB all i get is a lot of static, but with the same set up just recording Talking into a mic through mixing board set up. it comes through just fine. Why do i get the static and how can i fix it?

  • Logic express and digidesign 002 mixing board

I just installed Logic Express 7.2.3 but it doesn't seem to recognize my digidesign 002 mixing board. Is there anyone that can help me set this up so that I can use my 002 to record guitar and vocals into Logic express?

You need to let Logic now that it is there. Although you have it physically hooked up it needs to be vertually hooked up too.
Go to you Utilities folder & open up the Audio Midi Setup. You need to define your Digi002 here & make midi connections etc.

  • What do I need to add a mixing board to my G4?

I have a G4 and I want to add an external audio mixing board. I don't have any A/V options on the G4. Is there a card or something I can add to it so I can plug in the board?
    Thanks very much.
    Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi,
Who made your mixing board? Does is have USB or Firewire ports? Or just serial ports?
There are a number of cards on the market that should fit the bill. One company you might look at is Mark of the Unicorn .
With more info, we can narrow done the options better.

  • Using a mixing board as a pre amp?

    Hey all,
I have a decent little M-Audio audio interface but I'd like to record more than 2 real instrument tracks simultaneously for a recording session. I believe I can record up to 8 real instrument tracks at any given time with GB3 and was wondering if I am able to use a mixing board as a pre amp much like my audio interface? If so, how do I connect it up?
Here's the link to our board:

    Thanks!
    Jay.

For 8 channels you'd need a FireWire interface or mixing console that offers at least 8 channels out.
An example, the interface I use, the Presonus FirePod FireWire Audio Interface
8 Mic PREs and 10 channels out (GB can use 8 of those)

  • No Effects in Sonar4 or CL mixing board-Xi Fi Plat

    Hello...
I have no effects in the Xi Fi mixing board or my Sonar 4. I cant be the only person with
this problem. Seems like the two are fighting each other for level control and effect use.
Outside music creation all is okay.

I have your same type of problems with X-FI Fatalyty card, There are none type of effects for Midi Tracks in music creation mode console, but the same problem is present if you use the creative player to reproduce midi files...
    Maybe to update last drivers...

  • Using a mixer board.........

What is the need for a mixer board, like the ones you see in big studios, if they all use high end programs like Logic and Pro tools? I've been to studios that didn't a DAW and instead used ADAT where a mixerboard contraols everything. But why is one needed if a studio is based of Pro Tools. Is there a way to control all the volume sliders and eq's of each track on your computer using a mixer board? In other words, is it possible to adjust the volume of a track on logic, by moving a volume slider on a mixer board, so as if the mixer board and the program are linked together?

There are a couple of advantages:
    1. When mixing, you have all channels in front of you. Faders and knobs you can adjust at will without looking at a computer screen.
    2. High-end consoles like NEVE, SSL, etc... have great pre-amps/compressors and EQs, so the sound is really warm, a whole different experience to the only software world.
    3. Another great advantage is being able to set your automation to latch, and start tweaking the mix at will, without limitations (like depending on a mouse channel by channel).
P.S. There are a lot of reasons, but to me these are the most notable.

  • Audigy 2 ZS and external digital mixer and digital cd pla

    Guru's,
I've got a problem getting a sound from my Audigy 2 ZS card in combination with an external digital mixer and a digital cd player. One channel of the mixer receives data from the PC (Audigy 2 ZS) and one channel receives data from the CD player. The mixer is connected to a dolby surround system- dvd player that connected to the speakers. When I try the digital out I don't get any sound, when I use one of the analog ports I do get a sound. What is here the ideal set-up and why can't I use the digital out ?

Do you mean, you do not get digital out from Audigy?
If yes, then have you set Audigy for digital output?
See Audigy User's Guide for options (if you don't have one, you can download it herefrom.

  • Site / Pin addresses for DAC on NI Digital Electronics Board

My advanced DE students are trying to build a circuit capable of communicating with the DAC on the NI Digital Electronics Board.
We have things to the point where we have a solid data stream, synchronized with our serial clock, and timed correctly relative to the DAC_CS pulse.  It all looks great on our oscilloscope. The one thing we are missing is the sites the signals are supposed to be mapped to in the Xilinx PlanAhead software.
    For example, LED0 is C11, LED1 is D11, SW0 is J11, SW1 is J12, etc...
The signals we need to be able to control on the DAC are:
    DAC_CLR, DAC_CS, SCK, and SDI.
    Thanks,
    -Bret Wood
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ooops, found it myself.
The master file was C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Circuit Design Suite 11.0\pldconfig\DEFB.ucf
    The DAC related locations are:
    SCK           R4
    SDI            P3
    DAC_CS    N12
    DAC_CLR  P13
Hope this helps someone else too.
