Digital noise using Apple 10-bit uncompressed codec for NTSC, BIG PROBLEM!

I hope someone from Apple or the Shake team can shed some light on this problem we're having so we can take the appropriate corrective action ASAP to meet our strict deadlines on this current project.
We're compositing all the EFX (over 1000 EXF shots) for a massive video game project that needs to be delivered to the client by the end of May. Let me preface the following comments by saying that overall, we're very pleased with Shake and the end results we're getting, but one problem in particular has us very worried about making our deadline:
The project is entirely bluescreen with CGI plates, shot on anamorphic Digibeta and captured into FCP as uncompressed 10 bit. 4:2:2 through a Blackmagic HD Extreme card (via SDI).
All the 4:2:2 material exhibits (for lack of a better desciption) digital "noise" that runs along the right-hand edge of the video, with frequent drop-out "looking" sparkles that can appear anywhere in the video image. These artifacts ONLY appear when the video clips are imported into Shake, and rendered out of Shake. They play perfectly fine in FCP and QT player.
If we force the FILE-IN node to 8 bit, the problem goes away, but keying suffers - so this is not an option.
The problem ONLY occurs on our Intel Mac's, not on our older G5's. The reason we invested in the Mac Pro's for this project was to reap the performance boost we desired in order to get the project out the door by our deadline, plus the G5's are busy offlining upcoming episodes - so turning the compositing over to the G5's is also not an option.
We're already well down the road, and while we realize that at Shake's current price-point it seems silly to complain at all, we gladly would have paid more for a compositing tool if we knew we were going to run into a situation like this. Unforunately, our initial evaluation of Shake was done on our G5's which don't suffer from this issue.
If anyone from has any recommendation for an efficient way to solve or work around this issue, we'd love to hear from you.
Best regards,
Michael Buday

Not sure the exact answer, but some options to try:
1) have you tried converting the clips to image
sequences? Perhaps it's a QuickTime error.
2) How about using 2 FileIns - one at 10 bit to
generate the keys and one at 8 bit for the fill?

Hello Patrick and thanks for your suggestion:
We're going to experiment with different codecs and image sequences this week to see what happens.
RE: using different FILEIN's for key/fill, is something I hadn't thought of but unfortunately the 10bit FILEIN would still be affected by the noise which would in turn affect the alpha channel created by Keylight or Primatte.
I'll let you know what we find out as things progress.
Again, thanks.

  • Has anyone used Apple Maps (on the Mac) for RoadTrip planning?

I would like to use Apple Maps to plan a road trip, but I don't see a way to drop multiple pins for multiple locations.  for example, I'd like to visit South Dakota, specifically, Custer and DeSmet, but I'd also like to visit Devil's Tower in Wyoming, the petrified forest which is close by, some caves, etc.  I would like to be able to set my starting point and drop some pins for points of interest and then figure out what else is around those points of interest (PINs) such as restaurants, hotels, historical sites, etc.  And finally be able to pull all this together so I can figure out the road trip.
Has anybody done this and if so would you be willing to share some tips?

I don't see a way to drop multiple pins for multiple locations
This can't be done with Maps at this time. The best you can do is amass a set of bookmarks that contain a maximum of one starting point and one ending point with no way to organize them beyond the order in which they were created. (A completely fruitless exercise in my experience.)
IMO, you're much better off creating maps with Google Maps, saving those maps, then accessing your saved maps through the Google Maps app (in its settings) on your iOS device or via the Web on a Mac. You can also use the Google Maps app in conjunction with the TripAdvisor app and even the OpenTable app to navigate to places to stay and eat anywhere in the country.
(Don't underestimate the value of paper maps for long road trips like this, either.)

  • HT204266 I have used apple products, phones, apps, iPads for 5 yrs. now, 1 iBook said I had to switch back from a U.K store? I've never been! Now I can't even update my apps I've used for years

This is my 1st time   so I can't tell if you all could see my entire question:
Basically, I've been kind of an apple junkie since my first 1phone 3G approx 6 years ago then on to the iPads.  I've been really lucky with the apps, iTunes, etc. and finally decided to try a couple books and Instant nightmare.  Every time I open my apps or I books it s me I have to switch to the U.S Store.  I've never, switched out of U.S???  Now it's infiltrated my Netflix.  I go under settings and it it's all cool.  I'm in the right time zone.
Please help me!! I'm healing from a surg and this is my only entertainment while waiting to get back to work.
    Thank you much!!

Reboot your iPad and then try changing the store again.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Using iCloud has absolutely no bearing in this issue whatsoever.

  • Use apple tv as MAIN storage for music

I want to use the apple tv to store all my mp3's but i don't want the mp3 files left on my macbook (main computer). I tried to add some files by syncing with apple tv after i had erased some off my macbook and it erased them off my apple tv as well. How do I get around this?

You don't, really. AppleTV was never intended to be a permanent storage solution for your media, as has been discussed at length in these forums.
If you really insist on doing this I suggest you get a large external drive, back up all your music, sync it to AppleTV then never sync again because anything that is not in your iTunes library will be removed from AppleTV.

  • Using Apple USB Keyboard Extension Cable for Power

I have a USB keyboard extension cable. Part number is 591-0079. Can I use that to extend the power cable for my iPad when it is plugged in? Can I also use it for my iPhone?
I wanted to check first to make sure because it predates the iPad and the iPhone.
    Thanks any advance.

So there won't be any problems transferring power through it? It will charge iPad and iPhone without any trouble?

Before you send your email, go to Message > Text Encoding and choose one of the Chinese encodings, like GB for simplified and Big 5 for traditional.  You might have to try different ones, or UTF-8.

  • Using External Hard Drive as storage for iTunes Library - Problems

I currently use an external hard drive to store my iTunes music, does anyone know why when I copy folders to iTunes library, duplicates appear - sometimes 2 or 3 copies of same song, same artist, album everything. A trud copy. Also, when you are setting up your music folder on the External Hard drive, would you copy from C: the entire iTunes tree - ie. iTunes/iTunes music/iTunes library or just have one folder called iTunes library? Also, when specifying location for finding music in preferences, again would you use entire tree of just iTunes music library.

To copy... use the menu item "Edit > Copy"
To cut... use the menu item "Edit > Cut"

  • Newbie question about 10 bit Uncompressed Video

    Hi guys
Am I correct in understanding that Uncompressed formats are only for digitizing analog video?
Like, with DV or HDV or HD 1080p/ P2 etc.. I would never need to use any Uncompressed codecs.. is that right??
Basically my question is: when would I use one of these Uncompressed codecs?
    Thanks!

Animation for interchange between platforms is no compression, and with alpha if millions+ is chosen. Basically these files would be exported from 10 bit files at our shop. Image sequences would be generated the same way unless they were going out to a grading station or VFX in which case they would be 16bit tiff or DPX files.
The main reason for not passing 10 bit video is gamma interpretation between platforms.
we have had success with AJA 10 bit uncompressed being passed to PC shops with them using the AJA codec on their systems. Most of these transfers are aftereffects based projects, captured via Kona3 in FCP automatic ducked to AE and passed with media and project. They come back the same way in an AE project. we can then control which layers go where depending on their use and workstation.

  • Gamma Shift After Rendering 8 Bit Uncompressed

I'm getting a really bad black level shift after I render in Final Cut 5. I'm using the final cut 8 bit uncompressed codec, which is what the footage was captured at. Before I render, the preview quality looks fine, but once I render it out, it looks awful, the blacks get a lot brighter, to the point where there's no detail at all. I've changed all my video output settings in the render settings to all the settings possible, and nothing works. I use an AJA iola for video output/capture, but I know it's not that becuase I hooked my sysem up through a normal firewire setup and it does the same thing. It seems to do it everytime I render, and it doesn't matter what kind of fiter or change I'm making to the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
2gig dual core G5, OS X 10.4.5, Final Cut Pro 5, AJA iola

ProRes is not a long GOP structure (it is not HDV). It is an all "i" frame with compression while maintaining a 4:2:2 color space. Its getting very good reviews including it's ability to work in Color and other grading/finishing options.
Just for your own piece of mind, why not get a segment in both formats and do some testing. That's the only way you'll know for sure the best workflow for your interests.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Problem with 8-bit uncompressed quicktime file

I have exported my FCP video using the 8-bit uncompressed setting considering I initially captured the content uncompressed via a Blackmagic Decklink card. The problem is, regardless of the settings I have chosen for the uncompressed export, the quicktime file always has horizontal lines going across it when I watch it.
It almost seems like this could be an interlace issue, but I don't really know why that would be the case. I imported from DigiBeta that had telecined 16mm footage on it, but the footage should be at 29.97 when it is imported. I'm sure I'm an idiot and there's a simple answer to this, so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks.
    PowerMac G5 2 x 2.0 GHz, 2.5GB RAM, 1 TB Disk   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

If the exported movie plays fine in FCP and but not in the QT player, I would assume everything is okay and it's just the QT player. A couple of tests you can try:
    1. Make sure the Quicktime player is set to actual size in the view menu.
    2. Open up the movie properties in QT player. I have version 7 and can do this by going to the window menu, then show movie properties. If I select the video track and then the visual settings tab, there is a high quality preference checked. If I have it checked, I can see visual lines in the credits of an DV movie I have. if I have it unchecked, the horizontal lines dissapear. There are other settings there that affect the playout of the film, but shouldn't affect your final format.
QuickTime Player is probably showing you the highest quality of image and taking an interlaced video and playing it progressive on your computer monitor.
If you are going back to tape, you'll be using FCP to go back out to tape and shouldn't have those line issues.
If you are compressing for DVD, you shouldn't have those issues.
If you find a more detailed explanation for this, post back so I can know it.

  • 8bit/10bit FCP uncompressed codec gamma

As of recently, I noticed that these 2 codecs appear fine in After Effects and FCP, although when brough into Quicktime, they appear brighter, and when even exported to Animation, they look fine. Is this just a playback issue with Quicktime?

I'm not entirely sure... The interesting thing is that I have been working with 8/10 bit uncompressed clips for a while, and I've just recently noticed this problem (having updated quicktime and 10.4.5 in the past week or so)
Basically, exporting a video out of After Effects as animation and as 8 or 10 bit give drastically different results when opened in Quicktime Player. However, when I bring them back into After Effects or FCP, they look fine, so I'm guessing this is strictly a quicktime player display issue with the FCP codecs.
I've posted a sample screenshot, 10bit on the left and Animation on the right.
    http://media.21productions.com/~ageis/uncompressed.png
Inside AE or FCP, Animation and 8/10 bit are identical looking, and look like the right image.

  • Color renders huge 10 bit uncompressed files

Shot 1440 CBR with JVC everio GZ-HD7, log&capture into FCP good, Sequence done, send to color renders out Huge 10-bit uncompressed codec sequences. FCP sequence settings to capture in prores HQ and same with color sequence in FCP. Files look ok but a 10 min clip eats up 60GB on firewire 800 drive. I haven't even sent to compressor yet. FCP even has trouble playing back these files probably due to the 1336 mbps playback dada rate. I must be doing something wrong.

Uncompressed 10-bit is huge. No surprise. Why are you rendering out of COLOR in that format if you intend to go to ProRes422?
