Digital Out activated when regular headphones plugged in.

Hi, guys.
I've been fiddling with this for a couple days now.
When I plug regular headphones or speakers into my MacBooks jack, the systems goes into Digital Out mode and thus, no sound can be heard from the headphones. If I plug them out, the internal speakers go back on and sound is back to normal.
After a lot of researching, I found a common issue, where the microswitch inside the audio jack would get stuck, and therefore the digital audio would always be active, even without anything plugged in. I don't think this is the same issue, since the system DOES KNOW when the jack is free, since I can easily switch back to internal speakers by plugging out. That's why I don't think the microswitch is stuck in my case.
I've noticed the red light turns on when headphones are plugged in. Somehow, it thinks any plug is a digital audio plug.
At this point, I've tried:
SMC reset
Wiggling a toothpick inside the audio jack
Deleting some audio plist files in my preferences folder
MIDI Audio configuration
Any tip will be preciated. I'm not in the mood to send it to have the motherboard replaced.
Thanks a lot for any hints!

Thanks. I already tried that twice, but didn't work.

  • E531 - When standard headphones plugged into jack, built-in mic is disabled

Greetings everyone ! Lemme start by saying I genuinely feel guilty when my first ever forum post is about a problem/issue, but apparently it's my curse, lol. Per standard rules, I did search through the Edge listing for a solution to my issue, but no luck. So:
The E531 has one headphone jack, however it's apparently intended use is for headSETS ('phones/mic combo). Currently, my only interest for the port is standard headphones. However, there is an issue: when a pair of standard headphones are plugged in, the built-in mic is disabled so the mic on a headset can be used.
Is there a setting or config change anywhere in the E531 that would allow the built-in mic to be used when standard headphones are plugged in to the headset jack? I've played around with audio settings as far as I dare to. Please, any help would be greatly apreciated.
edit: I'm not sure how my Subject line got completely reworded, but I've changed it to suit my topic. Sorry for the confusion.

There is definitely something strange here. I tried to reproduce your issue and if I plug headphones or headset I can still switch the microphone and speakers under Control Panel>Sound.
Have you got the latest sound card drivers?
    Vince.
Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it.

  • Good day, i updated my iphone 4 to the ios 7.0.4 and my phone stop ringing or vibrating and my headphone jack is not working. its playing out even when the headphone is plugged in. can someone please assit on how to fix the problem

please help its annoying because i am missing so much calls

    Start by reading through http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2634
Are the charger nd cable original Apple parts or third-party?  There have been a lot of problems ith third party cables and chargers since iOS 7 - checks for compatibility with Apple specs.
Try another charger and cable to see if that makes a difference.

  • Volume control not working when speakers/headphones plugged in.

When my external speakers or headphones are plugged into the back of my iMac, the volume control won't work. A "no sound" icon appears and the volume slider will not move. When I unplug speakers or headphones everything goes back to normal. All updates are current. My "Audio MIDI Setup" says, "Audio Output....Output Not Supported." Repairing disc permissions was run too. Any ideas?

    Hi Paul
    *First off:*
Open System Preferences > Sound and select the Output tab. Now plug in your external speakers or headphones, do you see the Device Name change from Internal Speakers to Headphones?
    *If nothing:*
Then try another Account, preferably your Admin. Account if your logged into another.
    *Still nothing:*
Check the settings in other third party Audio programs you may have installed?
    *If still nothing:*
    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
+(as per the instructions at the bottom of the article)+
    and
    Zap the Pram > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
*Then if you still get nothing:*
Take it in for service and have it checked for a hardware problem.

    This is my problem...
One day the building I've stayed been struck by lighting and my laptop suddenly shutdown. When I turned it back on the problem occurs. My laptop speaker wouldn't mute when the headphone plugged in. I've try reinstall the driver and plugged in a new headphone still wouldn't mute and the sound from headphone only from one side. Is this hardware problem and can it be fix or this problem can be solve just by tweaking?

    Hello ricky_waldron,
Your speakers do not mute when headphones are connected.
Go to HP.com and update the BIOS and chipset driver.
Here is a link to the updates.
Since you have already done a recovery, it may be the hardware not working correctly.
You may need to call HP and have the laptop sent back for repair.
Here is a link to a phone number to call HP and see what options they have.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • Analog audio unavailable - only digital out

Hello, I'm having a problem where my audio isn't functioning. Only digital out. I didn't even know my macbook had digital out. When I look in the headphone jack there is a red lazer beam shooting out. I don't want lazers. I want an analogue signal. Thanks.

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so uncheck it.
    5. Option click the speaker icon in the Finder menu bar,  select Internal Speakers.
    Best.

  • BareBone Hermes 650-P boots with tv out active?

Hello. I want use the BareBone Hermes 650-P to play dvd and divx on tv. Can you tell me if is the tv-out active when  boots? I want access to bios without monitor, over the tv only.
If somebody has this barebone, please, is the quality for tv good or poor?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
The Hermes 650 should produce TV-out on boot-up IF there is a TV (or VCR etc., anything that looks like a 75 ohm load) connected when you boot, AND there is nothing connected on the VGA (or DVI) out. The output may default to NTSC until you get to the Windoze desktop before it will switch to PAL (if you need PAL). Also, if you set it for full-screen (overscan) mode - which is the usual mode for watching DVDs etc. - it doesn't remember that setting when you reboot  X(
We use Hermes 845's, and we had to keep using a PCI video card to give us the TV out format we needed, i.e. full-screen PAL with no operator intervention after booting up. We use a utility called tvtool to do that (also lets us have TV and VGA simultaneously), but tvtool won't work with the on-board TV-out hardware  :(
The native TV-out quality is OK, and doesn't suffer some of the problems that the earlier MSI slim PC's (6215) had.
Bear in mind that 800x600 is normally the highest resolution you can use for TV-out, and even then you have to use large fonts etc. to be able to read the text. This is a limitation of TV displays - they are not designed to have the same bandwidth/resolution of computer displays. You may also find that DVDs won't show on the TV-out without some software to bypass the Macrovision copy protection
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

Do you see a red light in the headphone jack?? If you do, then the microswitch is stuck and you need to turn it off. Try poking it with a toothpick.
If you don't see a red light, then try resetting the SMC and PRAM and see if these helps. Here are the links.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Subwoofer still active when headphones plugged.

    Hi everyone,
I've just realised that on my laptop, the subwoofer is still playing music when i've plugged-in my headphones.
    Kernel 2.6.35.4,
    Alsa 1.0.23,
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
I don't know when this started, but I suspect a kernel update, because IIRC this was not happening when I installed Arch near the end of 2009 (that was 2.6.31 IIRC).
Thanks to Arch Rollback Machine, I can tell it begins with 2.6.34, and 2.6.33.4 works fine (second edit: in fact, with 2.6.33.4, the subwoofer does not works at all ).
To who must this be reported, how can I help more precisely?

I am not sure but if you enable 2.1 sound (somewhere in the configs, don't know where exactly) and if you plug in your 2.0 headphones it still uses the subwoofer. You need to switch from 2.1 to 2.0. What usually happens automatically but in your case it don't.
Got a similar problem but not with arch linux and alsa. I solved it somehow like this.
