Digital Performer and Logic Express

Is there any way to rewire Logic Express (as slave) through Digital Performer (as host)? It doesn't show up in Digital Performer's audio inputs so I'm guessing not...
Thanks

How did you try it?

  • Digital Performer or Logic?

We have an old version of Performer (OS9, Pre-Digital Performer). The old Mac died, we'll be getting a new one and need to buy either Digital Performer or Logic Pro/Express(one of them). Does anyone have any comments about the pros / cons comparing these programs? Thanks for helping us upgrade.

Which program you get, may depend on what you need your software to do. I use both programs and like them both for different applications
Audio Recording: Both record audio and do a fine job. Logic is just a bit less of a cpu hog, meaning you may be able to have a couple more tracks in Logic over DP
Virtual Instruments: Logic wins hands down. I don't care for DP's VI's at all and think they are unusable. If you plan on using VI's, Logic has all you might need. If you get DP you will have to spend a few thousand more to get the kind of instruments that come with Logic
Plug-in's: Both have them, Logic has many more and most are real good. DP has a few good ones. Logic has a tons of presets to give you a starting point. DP has a few.
Channel strip settings: Logic has a ton of them. DP has none, nor the ability to save channel strip settings.
Scoring to film. I have never tried it, but I have a couple of friends that write for TV shows and have won awards for their work, and they work in DP. But then there are a few who contribute to this forum and do the same in Logic.
Midi recording and editing: Both do it and have sophisticated midi editing abilities. I prefer DP over Logic for midi editing. For me it is much more intuitive and easier to work with. Even though I prefer Logic's GUI I can build a midi song in DP much faster.
Are you using outboard synths? DP all the way! Logics way of addressing outboard gear in outdated, non intuitive, stupid and a total pain in the butt. Logic won't even fully utilize features of the Mac's Audio Midi setup. DP uses .midnam (midi name) and .midev (midi device) files stored in the Mac's AMS which are also easy to edit, to call up bank and patch names on your synths. In logic you have to manually set it up in the environment (took me about a week) and then save it as a template. if you call up another template then you have to drag the environment from the synth template because logic's environment import function is broken
Midi files. DP all the way. if you plan on importing and exporting standard midi files get DP, Logic's import and export functions for SMF's are very buggy and unreliable. Also when I import SMF into logic I get many inconsistencies, with notes not playing back properly. Exporting midi is a real nightmare. missing notes and quantization problems. DP is rock solid. never a problem importing or exporting, unless of course you import something created in Logic.
Live Performance. DP, hands down. The ability to save set lists is big for me. Logic cannot do it. virtual racks of VI's that all songs in the list work off of, so there is no load time. You can set it to auto play though the list or just call up the next and wait for you to start it.
    So what do you need?
If you are a song writer and looking for a great and economical way to get your songs recorded, I think Logic would be best way to go. As a creative tool you can't beat it. It comes with everything you need right out of the box. Plus let's not forget all those great apple loops to get those creative juices flowing. DP will end up costing a lot more to get what comes in Logic
If you strictly do midi production and live performance get DP
If you can afford it, get both

  • Is it OK to install both Logic Pro and Logic Express on my computer?

Is it OK to install both Logic Pro and Logic Express on my computer?
I use Logic to perform live, but i only have 2 USB drives on my computer, and i use them during my performances, one for my keyboard, and one for my audio interface...........therefore, i dont have room to plug in the "node key" in order to use Logic Pro.
So is it ok for me to have Logic Express installed, too?? This way, I dont need to plug in the "node key" (or whatever it's called).
I know i can buy a USB hub, but i cant afford one right now.
    Thanks, daddies!

I installed both on my PB 12" - no problem at all

Actually I have found a way for at least the instrument plug ins to be accessed.
I was able to set up an instance of Sculpture in MS2 and record it in LE using Soundflower.
Route the audio from MainStage to Logic and record onto an audio track in Logic as follows:
If not already installed, get SoundFlower. After installing it.
    A) Setup the sound you want in MS2 and audio output to Soundflower (remember to Apply Changes or it does not hold).
    B) In Logic Express set the audio input to Soundflower and create a new audio track for recording. Important: set Soundflower's audio output to however you listen to your audio or you won't hear anything.
    C) Press RECORD and start playing, LE captures Mainstage's sound.
I have not tried to wire LE's output to MS2 to take advantage of Space Designer. but since this functions, I'm not sure why that couldn't work as well. It is still flipping though a few screens though...might just be easier to get Logic Pro from the App store....

I have just bought a 2011 iMac (2.5 ghz, 4gb) and logic express 9, and when i installed logic and tried to run it i had a message saying 'you can't use this version of the application logic express with this version of Mac OS X. How do i sort this out!? It is very frustrating as the main reason i have bought  a mac is to use logic! Any help would be great as i am a complete novice when it comes to Macs!

You're probably on OS X Lion?
I had the same problem as you. I used Software Update to update Logic Express to the latest version, and then it ran without any problems.

  • Can I rewire GarbageBand2 and Logic Express 7?

Can I rewire (I mean using the Rewire Program) GarbageBand2 and Logic Express 7? Can either one be master and the other slave? My first guess is that I would like to go as far as I can with GB2 as the master and then make Logic Express 7 the master and create a multi-tempo song with perhaps other editing possible through Logic Express.

I got into garageband because, I, a songwriter, have a song for which I want to make a good demo. I am still trying to learn GarageBand. I would stay with GarageBand the whole way except that the song has two tempos and GarageBand can't do it. Thus I am buying Logic Express. But I don't want to learn anymore about Logic Express than I have to, to get the job done. I will stay in GarageBand as much as I can.
Unfortunately, even if I can get my multi-tempoed song back into GarageBand with rewire, GarageBand can't handle the two tempos. So, for that reason, I have to write this off as a learning experience.
Dear mother, Last week I couldn't spell pylut and now I is one.

  • Logic Pro, Logic Studio and Logic Express

Can someone explain the difference between Logic Pro, Logic Studio and Logic Express?

    Hi,
I don't think your friend is right on this. When you install Logic X, only the most essential part will be downloaded. After that you open Logic X, and from within the program  you can download all the other content. Logic will look if you already have Logic 9 content on your harddisk, so it won't download files that are already present. So, after all is downloaded, all files are on your harddisk, just like Logic 9. By the way, Logic 9 will still be available after installing Logic X.
Whether you will experience crashes will be very hard to prodect, because these will be caused by unforeseen combinations of your computer, audio interfaces, maybe even other hardware, kernel extensions etcetera. If you wait for a couple of months, updates of Logic X will probably have less crashes. As said, on my computer it's just as solid as Logic 9.
Garittan will probably advise a fast harddisk to prevent complaints when people are pushing the plugin to the edge. I would expect that it's not a black/white story.
The AUMatrixreverb can be found in any audio plugin slot completely at the bottom: Audio Units > Apple > AUMatrixReverb.
About the Epiano: in Logic Express there is only the Garageband Epiano, I think. Logic Pro 9 had a great ePiano that they gave a new name and changed a bit in Logic X. Both very nice.
Yes, you may be right, not too many drums with brushes in Logic X, I think. Or does anybody else know where to look??
    Kind regards,
    Jaap

  • MOTU 828 and Logic Express 7

I have a MOTU 828 purchased new in early 2002. Software is Audio Desk. Two questions:
    1. Is there any reason to get Logic Express 7?
    2. Is the MOTU 828 hardware compatible with Logic Express 7 as an interface through which to plug in instruments/mics?

The 828mk2 is a great soundcard. As for audiodesk... Here's the low down. Both Logic Express and Audio Desk are cut down applications from their 'pro' level apps which are Logic Pro and Digital Performer. I use DP for film editing, and I like it, but it is very different from Logic. I have tried using Audiodesk, and I found some of its limitations annoying after using DP. For example, it doesn't have its consolidated window which for me, and I think many others will agree, is DPs USP. Logic express is much less crippled in this way - the interface is exactly the same as Pro, and many things that Pro can do, Express can do too. There are a few very annoying omissions which is why I eventually upgraded, but Express is a great app. You might also find Audiodesks interface a little difficult at first - it's more geared towards the ProTools look of things. Then again, some people say they find Logic completely illogical. Ultimately it's entirely personal opinion, but I would go for Logic, if only for the synths and plugins. Hope this helps, and nice one for getting an awesome soundcard! Best, Fred

  • Digital outs in Logic Express with 828 or 002 rack

Can someone tell me if it is possible to use the digital ins and outs of either my MOTU 828 or DIgi 002 rack with LE? It's no where as easy as Pro tools or DP!!

Forgive my naivety... when you say "digital outs" are you talking about SPDIF? Does this mean I can't run Logic Express with an interface connected to the SPDIFs on my G5? Only Pro? Or am I off the mark?
    Thanks!

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Apple Loops, Jam Packs and Logic express 8 installation?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I've currently use Final Cut Studio 2 +Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2+ application with all included Apple Loops.
I own several Jam Pack Apple Loops packages (with a less than impressive integration with Garage Band for older one).
I purchased Logic Express 8 pro today.
Is there more Apple Loops files included with Logic express 8 than with Soundtrack Pro 2?
What is the best way to install Logic express 8 Apple Loops to avoid duplicate loops files?
    Thank You.
    Michel Boissonneault

Well, the installation was very simple, no duplicate files and tight integration of GarageBand loops and JamPacks.

  • Lion and Logic Express 9.0

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and just bought a store-boxed version of Logic Express, which is ver 9.0. After installing, I got the message that it wouldn't launch because it's incompatible with this version of the OS. I tried downloading the latest update from Apple, but my serial number didn't go through as valid, perhaps since in this situation it's not yet registered. Is there away to proceed short of trying to return the software at Fry's?

    Hi,
Download the Latest Version of Logic Express from here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1015
Install it... Restart your Computer... then see if you can Open and Register Logic...
If you encounter any issues after doing this.. Give Applecare a call and tell them you are a Logic User...
    Cheers

  • Imac Internal Soundcard and Logic express 9

Hi there, I have just purchased an imac with Logic express 9 (will arrive in a couple of weeks), which has for the time being eaten up all my funds so I cannot yet buy an external audio interface for it. Would anyone be able to give me any information as to the capabilities of the built in soundcard when used with Logic? Obviously I am not expecting anything amazing by any means but is it at least usable until I can afford a decent firewire interface? There isn't really any technical information about it I could find on apple's website so thought I would ask here to see what people's experiences with it are. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Dan.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I won't be recording guitar, I will be recording a hardware synth (which I can run through a small mixing desk to boost signal to the audio in on the imac for the time being). I also have a usb midi keyboard/interface so I am covered in that aspect. I was wondering what the latencies are, and if the internal soundcard supports 24 bit recording.
    Cheers,
    Dan.

  • Amplitube 2 Live and Logic Express 9 Library

OK so I saw a ton of old threads about how amplitube 2 does not install or authorize or validate on Mac. I was able to successfully install it, authorize it, and validate it through the AU Manager in Logic Express 9. I see all the amp modeling effects in the IK Multimedia folder on my hard drive. However, how do I choose an amp/effect within Logic Express 9? I see that in the Library, it lists all of Logic's presets and even Garage Band's...but not Amplitube's?  I have used this very same installation disk on a PC with Acid Pro a couple of years ago and it worked perfectly. I admit I am still learning the ins and outs of Logic Express.

    1) Create a new audio track.
    2) In the channel strip on the left, click on Inserts>Audio Units>IKMultimedia>Amplitube2Live.
The Amplitube plugin window will then pop up and allow you to select your rig and tweak your sound.

  • Original Mbox and Logic Express 9

Does the original Mbox work with Logic Express 9, or is there away to make it work? Thanks!

okay. i just figured out a really weird fix/workaround
the only input option is input 1, but, if you go to audio settings, and in the core audio settings, arbitrarily change the Sample Size, it will bring back both inputs.
like the first time i changed the buffer sample size to 512, then they came back, the next time i launched logic, it was still at 512 but the inputs stopped again, so i switched it back to 256, and now both inputs work again (prolly until i exit logic pro 9)

  • Using Outboard Gear With M-Audio Fast Track Pro And Logic Express

My Fast Track Pro has 2 insert jacks on the back where you can run a send and return to use outboard gear. The cable you use has 2 female 1/4" jacks (one is send and the other is return) that go to a 1/4" male jack that you plug into the back of the interface.
    My question is this:
How can I get Logic Express to send a track through the outboard gear connected to my interface? On the track's output settings in Logic there are "Output 1+2", which run to my monitors I think, and "Output 3+4", which don't have anything plugged into them. There don't appear to be any other options for sending the track. How can I get Logic to recognize the Inserts jack on the Fast Track Pro? I'm running all the latest drivers if that means anything. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for helping me on this. I'm still a bit confused on how to send the channel through the insert. The jacks on the back of my interface are "TRS Output 1+2" (my monitors are plugged into these outputs), a RCA "Output 1,2,3, and 4", an S/PDIF out and in, and then 2 TRS inserts jacks, marked 1 and 2. Each jack does it's own separate send and return which is why I had to buy the cable with the 2 female jacks on it.
I've been able to use the I/O plugin and get the track to accept a signal from the insert on input 1 (I have a looping pedal running in the send chain and was able to get it to play a loop over top of the audio already recorded on the channel), but am unable to send the recorded track through the fx send. What would I need to set the output to to be able to do this? Thanks for your time.
