Digital Photographers: Image browser suggestions?

I deal with a lot of digital photos in my line of work and the need to browse through a folder of images is important.
I'm finding Adobe Bridge to be very slow and irritating and a little unrealistic in it's inability to simply browse a folder of images without endless spinning beach balls.
Any of you digital photographers have any suggestions for a good image browser as an alternative to Bridge? I don't need one that has editing capablities, just browsing without the headache.
Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Image Browser downloads to wrong folder

I couldn't find a better category for this question than iPhoto. Sorry if there is one.
I just got a Canon powershot A630 camera. it's great. I was using iPhoto to download images and that was fine. But I thought the Image Browser software that came with the camera would offer more functionality. And i guess it does but I'm having a lot of difficulties with it.
I called Canon and spoke with tech support but they just tell me it works for them so it must be my problem. They are using mac 10.4 and I have 10.3.9 so that might be part of it. The Image Browser version is 5.7.
    Here's what happens:
I have specified under "Preferences" in the "Camera Window" (that comes up when I connect the camera to the computer) for the images to be downloaded to a folder I created called "Powershot A630" which resides in the Pictures folder. The default location for download is that same Pictures folder. And that's where the images go, NOT to the folder I specified.
I've tried also setting that in the EOS window (which can only be started when the camera is NOT connected to the computer). Still doesn't help.
The Canon guy ran me through a scenario where I "select" pictures for downloading. In this scenario I get a chance to specify the destination, and in fact, it shows the destination I chose in preferences. And it does download to the correct place. But then, where the Image Browser main window lists "favorite" folders, my destination folder is now listed twice. Not desireable I think.
At this point, I think I'll just go back to iPhoto, but if anyone has a solution, or other reasons why I should use Image Browser I'd love to hear.
One more thing. The second Canon guy I talked with took me into "Image capture" utility and had me set the destination folder there. Don't see where that has any bearing on the activity at hand, though.
    Thanks a lot,
    Bruce

    Smtr,
See my responses (marked "B-") interleaved with your great note...
    Bruce,
I love my Canon Powershot A620. The 630 looks
awesome. My Image Browser is version 5.5, and I don't
know what changed with the next versions.
B- Yeah, the a630 is really nice. I previously had an A40 and this is a major step up.
Anyway, the second Canon guy sounds a bit more
knowlegdeable about Macs. The preferences in Image
Capture are where you set which application (or none)
opens automatically when the Mac detects a camera or
card. So if setting it in Image Capture doesn't work,
then I'm not sure what will. I'm afraid I can't
answer your core question here about how to download
    to your preferred folder.
B- Thanks for explaining that. It's very clear. I did not understand that from my conversation with the Canon rep.
As for your choice of which app to use, consider
this: Image Browser is just that - an application for
browsing your hard drive and displaying the image
files in various ways. iPhoto is NOT an image
browser. It is a photo organizer with lightweight
editing capabilities and limited version control.
B- That's good to know, too. I was assuming that Imagebrowser was a substitute for iPhoto and I was hoping for increased funcionality. And it does have lots of stuff in it, which was more confusing than anything else.
iPhoto is a database application, so when you use it
you should NOT manipulate items in its library folder
    structure from within the Finder.
B- yeah, I had discovered that
    With an image
browser you always manipulate the files yourself from
Finder. You alone are responsible for the
organization of your images. With a database you
manipulate your files from inside the application,
and let it take care of the file management
automatically. The two apps are incompatible. If you
import your photos to iPhoto you should not access
them using Image Browser, because you could damage
the library. I know you weren't suggesting combining
the two, I am just trying to highlight the
    differences between them.
So ask yourself if you like iPhoto's capabilities. If
you were happy with it before, then there's really no
need to switch to Image Browser. It's like apples and
... cows (oranges are too similar) and the choice is
    up to you.
B- the one thing I like so far about imagebrowser is the easy way to view the image full screen. Have not figured out how to do that in iPhoto.
BUT, there is a task inside my Image Browser that I
absolutely LOVE because it does something I can't do
with iMovie. Its called "MovieEdit Task" in
    Applications>Image Browser>DVCUtility. It's a great
little thing that lets you take separate video clips
and combine them into one movie. It's much simpler
than iMovie, and optimized to work with your Canon's
video clips. (Whereas iMovie prefers miniDV tape.) It
will allow you to rotate a video clip 90 degrees, so
if you turned the camera on its side to record a
movie clip you can rotate it to portrait view. I have
done this and used the clip in iMovie, and it was
perfect. Without it I would have needed an iMovie
plug-in or had to buy QuickTime Pro.
B- I'll have to look into that. I also have a digital camcorder and have used iMovie. And I'll definitely look into the rotation. My novice friend used my camcorder and shot a bunch of shots of our band with the camcorder rotated 90 degrees.
So, I sometimes use Image Browser due to the way it
handles video clips. Here, it is superior to iPhoto.
But for every day use and for the storage,
organization, and manipulation of my photos, I use
iPhoto (in conjunction with PhotoShop Elements for
    real editing).
    Just my 4¢.
B- Thanks for the great letter!

  • Scripting photoshop image browser

    Hello.
Is it possible to script the image browser?
I need to make the browser to:
    - jump to certain folder or network path
    - display certain images based on metadata
Any suggestion regarding the idea and any hint where to look for existing source code to start with is well appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks for dropping by and the hints provided.
The image browser I meant was the file browser found within Photoshop CS.  Can't I use it?  Photoshop CS4 does not have File Browser?
I have not used CS4 and I don't have Bridge software.  I might consider buying it if the existing will not help me.
I am using VB6 GUI as my tool in scripting Photoshop.  Can I script Bridge with VB6?  I know I am using an old version of Photoshop and that because I have developed many tools for my own use based on Photoshop CS (known as 8).
Is there any tools that can convert my old VB code to work with Photoshop CS4?
    OR
Will my old scripting code is going to work with new versions of photoshop?
    Thanks

  • Photo quality and compression in iphoto vs canon's image browser, et. al.

hello. brand new here and very new to macs. the question I have is this:
when you import photos to iphoto, do the photos get compressed? do you lose any quality that you wouldn't lose by importing them to image browser or another program?
a friend who is a semi-professional photographer said that some quality is lost in iphoto through compression, but #1) she's probably on an older version than '09 and #2) I know she almost always shoots in raw, so I don't know how much importing of jpegs she does anyway. I am not talking about raw photos, but jpegs shot in the highest resolution (I have a canon g9, which is 12.1 megapixels). she always imports to image browser.
    thanks very much,
    sean

What format is the external disk? If it's a FAT format this will account for the discrepancy as the FAT format cannot make sense of the Resource fork in the Mac files. Also, the blunt fact is that the Finder can be an unreliable reporter of file sizes.
One reliable way to check if the pics are duplicates is to use Graphic Coverter.
As to the file size in iPhoto - reported in the iPhoto Window. Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". No photo app with editing can respect this flag, so iPhoto, seeing the flag, reads the intention and creates a modified version. If you then try to Revert to Original, iPhoto will remove the edited version. However, when it then looks at the Original file again, it sees the flag, and creates a new rotated version. This loop will run as long as you Revert to the Original. The solution is to either a: turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on your camera or b: rotate the photos prior to importing them to iPhoto.
Obviously as it involves compression there is data loss. That's the 2.4 Version.
BTW: are you aware of the Non-Destructive Editing feature in iPhoto?
    As to your workflow:
iPhoto is good for 250,000 images, so there is little need to be overly concerned about it becoming "overcrowded". And, you can have multiple libraries, of course.
I mention this because, in your current workflow, only your original files are backed up. Any work you do in iPhoto or via iPhoto - editing, keywording, albums, print objects etc - are not being backed up.
My suggestion would be to simply back up the iPhoto Library Folder and get it all - Original files and everything else.

  • Problems with dating downloaded images using Image Browser

When I download a day's pictures with Image Browser to my Mac, and some images were taken before 5 p.m. and some after 5 p.m., any of them taken after 5 p.m.  are kicked into the next day's folder on my computer.
My camera and computer dates are correct. Time zone (Pacific) is correct. Even my tech savvy son can't figure this one out. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Hey RJ, I was able to create it no problem using either Rectangle Tool with 10px roundness (left), or the the Rounded Rectangle Tool (right).
See live example here with drop shadow.
    Download original sample file here.
    Couple of tips to remember.
    - Use .jpg (100 quality) or png for each of the slices for them to show 'smoothly'. (I notice your screen example uses .gif, and it's not recommended when drop shadows are used)
    - For the top/bottom make sure the slice extends just a tab bit beyond where the 'corner' on the shape occurs. Thats why your seeing a little 'extra' graphic on your edges.
    hope this helps

I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities>Airport Utilities and all I get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser window which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

Open AirPort Utility. The first screen looks something like this:
Click on the AirPort Extreme and another screen will appear. Click Edit, then the window with the Wireless tab will appear.
If you do not see these screens, you will need to start over and configure your AirPort again.

  • Good Image Browser

    Hi all,
Can anyone recommend an Image Browser for OS 9.x that works as well as ACDSee for the PC? Unfortunately, the version of ACDSee available for Mac is old and very limited. I'd like to be able to quickly flip through all the images in a folder at full screen using the mouse or a single key on the keyboard. I have tried countless shareware programs with no avail. Someone had recommended GraphicConverter, and while it is better than most, it still does not do what I just described (or at least I haven't figured out how). Also, I don't know if it's just the speed of my machine or not (G3-400), but v5.95 of GraphicConverter is terribly slow at loading pictures.
    Thanks for any tips.
    David

    Hi, David -
I use GraphicConverter for that. The version I use is a bit older than yours, v. 4.8, since I haven't updated it in a while. But it does the job.
GC is slow to load a folder full of images the first time that's done, because it is creating thumbnail and preview images for each file (this is adjustable in GC's Preferences). Subsequent openings of the folder are fast.
I've found the easiest way for me to do that is to just drop the folder onto GC's icon (actually, an alias to GC). The images are loaded and presented in catalog layout format. Doing a Command-A selects all of them, or I can select a limited assortment of what's in the folder. At that point the Slideshow icon in GC's header becomes active; clicking it starts the slideshow. The slideshow can be controlled a multitude of ways - click the mouse button to advance one image; use the left and right arrow keys to advance or go back one image; or use the control strip presented to control the slideshow. Command-. (Command-periodkey) kills the slideshow and takes you back to the catalog layout.
I like the catalog layout for several reasons. I can throw away a file directly, simply by clicking on it and pressing Command-Delete. You can also set up several target folders and sort the pix into them using user-defined key combos (set those in GC's Preferences). Normal Finder navigation actions work in the catalog mode - click on an image to select it; double-click it to open it (it will open into GC's image editor); use the arrow keys to navigate to and select another image; hold down Shift while clicking to select a contiguous group of images, or hold down Command-Shift while clicking to select a non-contiguous group of images; etc.

  • Image browser "memory card utility" downloading to wrong date folder

    Mac OSX 10.7, Image Browser 6.9.0.3 (9L)
I own 5Dmarkii and 60D.  When I insert memory card, Memory Card Utility (1.7.0.0.9L) launches.  I select Download, and program transfers to my computer.  No fancy settings, just standard.
Both cameras date setting is correct, and image efix data is correct for date and time shot.  Computer system date and time correct.
Pictures taken prior to 5:00pm are filed in a folder with previous days date.  Photos after 5:00pm are filed in correct days folder.
    Driving me nuts..... Help please

I'm having the same issue.  The Canon software behaves as though it catagorizes the photos (and names them, based on the way I'm importing them) based upon what day it was/is in England (I  think it uses GMT when making the date classification)
For me, it is also usually an annoyance, but sometimes it's more frustrating.  If I want my files named by date, correctly, then I have to re-name all the photos taken after 4:00 pm (16:00).
Yes, my camera (7D) and computer (MacBook Pro) have their date and time settings correct.  (I tried changing the time zone my camera was set to to see if it changed the problem, and it didn't.  The Canon software is mis-placing the photos based on the date.)
I might try this workflow on a Windows machine, and see if it persists.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • PS E9 not recognized by image browser.

I recently updated from PS E7 to E9. When using E7, my image browser (Nikon View NX2) worked properly. After installing E9, NX2 no longer connects to E9. When right clicking on an image in the browser, it gives ask for which program to open the image with. One of the selections is PS Elements (Editor). When clicking on that option, a dialog box opens and says the program does not exist.. I also have CS2, and that works properly with View NX2. I am using a PC with Windows 7, 32 bit. Help please.

I figured out the fix for the Mac users having this problem. I connected my iPhone to my iMac and started iTunes. A dialogue came up in iTunes, I OK'd that and then OK'd the usual "Do you trust this Mac" that comes up on my iPhone.
Suddenly Image Capture launched itself and there were all my photos, ready to be downloaded.

I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and have found that some of my software no longer works, notably Image Browser and also the Epson Scanner Perfection 3490 software. Is there a 'patch' or way to allow me to use these programmes especially the scanner.

Apple discontinued support for PowerPC apps with Lion, I think, so you're out of luck there. No patch coming, unfortunately. Best to upgrade whatever old applications you have or, since it seems like you're using some relatively old software, scout around for replacements that give you the functionality you need.
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan and select your scanner from the list--if it's not there you'll need to add it (start with the little plus icon). Once you have it in the list you can click on the Open Scanner button and a pretty barebones scanner driver will load for you. But Image Capture (as mentioned previously), found in your Applications folder, will probably do the job as adequately, or better, than your old scanner software.
