Digital sound output only after using Headphones

i used my MacbookPro 17 2.66
with headphones to listen to music and after i removed headphones there is a red light in the headphone port and only digital sound output option in system preferences control panel
If i reinsert headphones, headphone output reappears
Where are my internal speaker option gone
i have a time machine backup
Can i just replace sound preferences
Thanks

Generally that means your headphones' plug is not exactly to dimensional stands and has jammed the internal connector in the jack to the "mute" position. The plug's tip-to-shoulder distance seems to be the variable.
I've found with my MBP that, with non-standard plugs, inserting them only until they function--not until the "stop shoulder" hits the MBP case--prevents this. I have an old and cheap set of external speakers whose plug works perfectly. A patch cable I use to connect to my desktop sound system has a non-standard plug, and I have to leave the plug slightly out of the jack to prevent the problem you see. Again, insert until you hear proper sound to the device, not by feel. I've no problems with the plugs falling out using this technique.
The "official" fix is a new logic board but most people are able to free the internal contact by inserting a plus into the jack and gently wiggling it in the horizontal plane. One person recently said he freed his with a wooden toothpick.
If you use anything other than a standard plug to manipulate the jack, be certain it's non-conductive. BTW, if you use the "Search Discussion" option in the upper right of this page and search for "red light" (use the quotes) you will see a number of threads here on the subject.

I have the following device adapter - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chip Set Family, and two sound, video, game controllers - Coexant High Definition  Smartadudio 221 and Intel (R) HIgh Definition Audio HDMI.  I do not see any option but "Speakers" on the Sound "playback" tab.  Not sure what to do to fix

With the cable connected to source, click to select/highlight the Intel HDMI. next click the 'Set default' button.

  • After using headphones for about an hour both my built-in speak and head phone stop working

After using headphones for about an hour both my built-in speak and head phone stop working, what could be wrong? I have checked system preferences and all appears ok there but still no sound

Your put your Air into sleep mode with headphones attached, I assume.
Upgrade to the latest OS to resolve that issue.

  • Sound output only has option for Digital Out, no internal speakers, and no headphones.

I recently got a new 2012 Macbook Pro 15" and my sound output is not working correctly. The only option is Digital Out - Optical digital-out port. There is no intenral speakers option, nor is there a headphones option when I put them in. I am running Mountain Lion and unfortunately have tried looking up similar posts with no help. I have attempted to reboot the SMC and perhaps one other trick, but I have not had any luck. If anyone has any idea what I should do or if you need more information to make a diagnosis that would be great! To note, it worked fine when I first got the computer, but when I was messing around trying to hook my computer up to an HDTV (i have a thunderbolt HDMI cable that sends sound as well) I had a couple of problems (I think it was because it was a very old Vizio that did not support the HDMI) and perhaps some of the settings got changed on my computer. Anyways thanks in advance!

    Hi,
That is good news! For some reason I only experienced that for a little while before it straightened out itself. But I know that was driving a lot of people crazy. Thanks for pointing out that 10.6.2 did the trick.

  • Sound off after using Headphones- next Startup

After utilizing headphones and shutting down computer (w/ phones still plugged in) - the next time the E205 Satellite is started there is no sound. So is there a way to prevent this, other than obviously remembering to unplug the phones !  Machine seems to default to headphones.  Thanks

  • Digital sound output from G3 700mhz

Can I output digital sound from my ibook G3 700mhz to my Nad Digital amp, which can input using either optical cable or single digital phono cable?
If so which cable should I use and where can I get one from. Many Thanks Alex2001

Not directly, no, since your iBook doesn't have a digital output, only a stereo analog output. There are external USB and Firewire audio output devices that would provide a digital output, but I can't make a specific recommendation. Perhaps if you ask in the iBook G3 area, someone can make a suggestion.

  • No sound output to TV using Apple dock - video is fine

I'm baffled. I have a new 80GB iPod Classic, a brand new Apple dock, and Apple A/V Component cable. When I watch a video or photo slideshow, everything works great. However, when I want to listen to my iPod's music through my TV's speakers, using the same setup, there is NO sound output to the TV at all. Why would the audio play when watching photos or video, but no sound when all I want is music? Please help!

I haven't personally had this problem, but I believe in order to hear music through your TV speakers, you have to use the headphone port instead of the AV cable.

  • The volume keys on my MacBook Pro stop working after using headphones.

The volume keys on my MacBook Pro recently stopped controling the volume after I've used headphones. I still have sound; I just can't make the volume increase or decrease. The mute, however, still works just fine. Because I have sound from the intenral speakers I know the computer doesn't think the headphones are still in the jack. A reboot fixes the problem, but as soon as I use headphones the problem starts up again. I want to fix this permanently.
I don't know if this helps but all the other keys (brightness, play/pause, etc) still work. I recently had to reset the PRAM because my computer refused to sleep when the lid was shut. I've checked system preferences and everything seems to be in order.
    Can someone please help!?

I found this advice on another thread after encountering the same problem - I did the reboot and it worked fine and dandy!
I spoke with Applecare to fix my Macbook volume. Apparently there are pins inside the speaker/headphone jack that can get jammed. We fixed mine by doing some sort of reboot:
    Turn off laptop.
Hold down the Option, Command, P, and R keys (all four at once, it's tricky!) and while holding down the four keys, turn on the computer. When you hear the second chime, release the four keys.
This re-set the sound toggle to internal speakers. Now I'm afraid to insert headphones again, but I assume this reboot will work over and over.

  • Delayed digital sound output?

Presumably someone else has seen this already, but I could not find any such info in the FAQ or here.
I recently connected the SPDIF output to the stereo.
The sound output there, while good, is slightly offset from the analog output. When running with both analog and digital output active, the digital works as an "echo".
More annoying, when playing video, this means lips and voice are not in sync.
My guess is the offset is something like 0.1 - 0.2 secs.
    Anyone seen(/heard) of this before?
    WinXP, BIOS 2.4, APU 1.0 / audiodriver: 5.10.2826.0000

    Hook,
All this is using the SPDIF output:
I just checked and the delay is greater (and is probably what you are noticing) when you enable the Dolby Digital encoding. If you output Stereo, that is PCM, it will be much smaller. The DD encoding/decoding process takes time.
Sill, you will notice some delay anyway WRT the analog, as your receiver has to process the PCM signal a little, but not as much as the DD signal.
If your problem is lip-sync, set your DVD player to output directly to SPDIF and not to 6 channel audio. Just think about it:
DD track ->SoftDecode to 6 channel->MCP encode to DD->SPDIF->Receiver decode to 6 channel
    VS
DD Track->SPDIF->Receiver decode to 6 channel.
    Hope this helps.
    M.-

  • Digital sound output

I just bought a HP Pavilion dv7-1040ew, mainly because of the blu-ray.
But how do I get digital sound out to my amplifier. No use of blu-ray if i don't have DD.

There is only hdmi out and I don't have that on my amp. Please help.
Do I need to buy a extern soundcard? Or is there a cheaper way?

  • Suddenly no sound in Safari after using Plex

    Hi
I have a Macmini connected to a reciever via HDMI. Sound is normally perfect.
For some reason I got a strange problem
When I look at Plex the sound is fine from the stereo, but when I then switch to Safari sound is only coming from the computer and not sending it to the HDMI and the reciever. Seems to solve from a reboot, but not all the time.
I dont think I did any upgrade of the Software.
Thanks for help if someone knows

Check your Audio Midi setup utility in Applications -> Utilities is set for 44.1kHz output.  Sometimes when that gets reset to something else, other applications have no audio.

  • Centro has no sound after using headphones

Hi, all.  I used a 2.5 mm jack (radio shack adapter) so I could used my good quality headphones and listen to mp3 music.  After removing this, my Centro had no volume when making calls and people on other end couldn't hear me either.  The common fix for this (wiggling a pin inside the 2.5 mm female jack of the phone) did correct this.  But I won't do this every time I want to listen to mp 3.
So, why did this happen?  Is there a specific type of 2.5 mm jack, or is this a phone defect (ie:  a pin inside the female end of the jack sticking)?  Is this a common issue?  Is there a permanent fix?
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

This issue has been reported on Treo model phones. It sounds like the microswitch in the headset jack is sticking.
What you have done is similar to the procedure supplied in the kb.palm.com article regarding the headset jack issue.
Here are the steps for trying to resolve the issue.
Plug and unplug: Try plugging and unplugging the headset to the smartphone a couple of times. The smartphone might mistakenly be under the impression that a headset is plugged into the phone, which would make it route audio to a nonexistent headset.
Clean the jack: If there is contamination or debris stuck in the audio jack, the speaker, microphone or headset may not work properly. Visually inspect the jack for debris that could block the connection. Try inserting and removing the handsfree headset a couple of times to see if it clears the debris from the device. You can blow into the jack or use gentle compressed air to clear debris. Note: Be cautious in using foreign objects to clear the jack. Like your ear canal, the headset jack is a delicate space that can be damaged if you clean it improperly.
Where's the trouble? If the steps above didn't help, you may need to contact Palm for further troubleshooting. An agent can walk you through a process to determine whether a particular component is failing, and whether the device needs repair.
I would suggest using a non-conductive electrical contact cleaner (you can find this in the electrical dept. at Home depot or hardware stores),  spray it on plug of your headphones, insert and remove the plug several times to try and clean the jack.

  • No sound from internal speakers anymore, only can use headphone jack

My Macbook just stopped working with the internal speakers - now no sound... but if I plug in headphones I can hear audio. Also, when I look at the headphone jack, it is lit up red inside! very weird. Anyone know what's going on? It really stinks to have no audio.
I know the speakers still work because when I restart the computer I hear the start up chime.

apple had to service the laptop and replace
    something- but it's fixed
hey. it's not a HUGE problem, although it's cool that you got it fixed. i currently (like, as i speak) have the same problem, but after reading a little bit, it seems that there's a little switch in there that's stuck. it determines whether ther's a headphone jack plugged in or not, and the red light just signals that it's not, but that switch says it is. so will apple really fix it? how long did it take?

  • Analog to digital: sound is only in left speaker, but I want it in both

I converted an old VHS tape to digital with my digital camcorder and imported it to iMovie. However, the VCR only had one audio output, not two for Right and Left. I tapped into the left (as I could only do one or the other).
Now, all my sound only comes through the left channel. I know the video will not be stereo, but is there a way I can get sound through the left and right channels?

Hmmm, I'm afraid this may be a lost cause. Is there really no way to simply make the movie mono instead of stereo with iMovie? The suggestion of using QuickTime didn't work for me, as I described above, but I found a way to accomplish the same result wih iTunes. The problem is, first off, this seems really hokey to have to go through so many steps, in different programs, just to make the sound mono. Secondly, when I import the (now mono) audio back into iMovie, it will be very difficult to make it sync up perfectly with the video. Multiply this task with about twenty or more clips, and it will be very time consuming, and likely to have audio that does not match perfectly with the video (which is simply not acceptable). Is that really the best (only) way to get the sound to come out of both speakers?
