I am looking to buy the least expensive digital video camera with the highest resolution I can find in order to use it to record 100s of old (1960s era ) reel to reel video tapes. I am told that in order to do that I must record the "old" video onto a new platform, which means I will set up an "old" projector and play the tapes and record the video on a digital camera. I only want to do this once so I want the highest resolution format I can find. Therefore, I am looking for a camera to purchase. Any help is appreciated.

Transferring film to digital video is a complex, challenging process. To cut to the chase, the best way to do this is to engage a firm that specializes in film-to-digital transfer services. There are quite a few around. Costs for 8mm transfer range anywhere from about $0.15 - $0.40 per foot and there are usually significant discounts for bulk projects. Plus, depending on the cost of the video camera you would otherwise consider buying, you may find it costs less overall to use a service than do it yourself.
You also mentioned that you "want the highest resolution format" ... Once you project 8mm/Super8 film onto a screen the effective resolution will not even be what we might consider "standard-def" in digital video. And the larger the projected image the lower & lower the effective resolution regardless of what kind of video camera you might use.
A transfer service, however, directly scans each frame to digitize them and depending on the math the resulting digital image may technically be as "good" as 720p ... but the overall image quality will still be limited by the quality of the original film ... and still probably not up the level of "standard-def" digital video ... but way better than anything you could obtain with a homebrew projector-screen-videocam setup.
Why DIY? Well, it sounds inexpensive and simple. But in reality it is a very time consuming way to get relatively low quality transfers no matter how high-end or expensive a video camera you use. I can share more details if necessary, but DIY film-to-video transfer is not the way to go if you are really interested in quality results.

Digital Video process

I am new to MACS and also video editing and am interested in your digital video workflow. I am using IMovie 6HD at the moment but will probably move up to final cut at one stage.
After taking and importing about 3hours footage over the weekend of my kids I suddenly found myself going "what the **** do I do know?"
First rule I learnt was that it may be better to stop recording when you were just repositioning with the camera so that you get smaller clips, I thought this would be easier to work with, would you agree?
So what do you do in order? edit clips, create title, choose music etc...
I guess it might be different with each project but any advise would be much appreciated.

that is a wide subject....
First of all you should have a storyboard, meaning an outline of what the finished movie will be. A good film maker will do the storyboard before he actually starts shooting - that way he knows what he will need and doesn't sit in front of the computer later wishing he had this or that shot..
If you shoot video on different occasions (holiday, birthday etc.) simply keep in mind that you have a story to tell - much like in a book, only shorter - so the whole thing should have a structure with introduction, main part(s) and ending.
as for the editing itself, I prefer to create the opening titles first, selecting a few good clips and inter-cutting them with over-black titles. Next I do a rough edit, meaning I select all the clips I want to have in the movie and place them in the timeline and watch the whole thing at least once.
when watching the movie while editing, it's good practise to do so without sound - if it looks good without, it'll be a hammer with the right audio.
after arranging all the clips, you'll need to do the trimming - cutting clips and deleting pieces, until you have everything fit together well. watch again without audio, then place the audio in the timeline - roughly. the final audio editing can only be done, when all the video has been cut and transitions have been added (clip length changes when adding some transtions).
with all the audio roughly in place, you will see if you need to adjust the video in order to match the audio better and you can decide wher to use original audio or music or both.
make final video cuts and then add transitions. use the transitions sparingly if possible - the better your shooting/editing, the less transitions you'll need (watch any movie and count the cross dissolves ... yep, not many there). I would avoid fancy transitions (unless really needed to underline something) and stick to dissolves and overlaps.
Now cut the music and make sure that you use it to give your video a good "feel". If you do it right, it will seem that the music was written just for your movie
titles at the end, then get popcorn and enjoy...

I have a Canon digital video camera (bought in 2004). I have been using it to transfer movies onto my other Toshiba laptop, but there is no place to plug in on my new laptop. I did use a iEEE1394 but it doesn't work on this one.
What alternative is there?
Also on turning on the laptop I get a message saying TOSHIBA SERVICE STATION NOT WORKING and proceeds to solve it but nothing happens.
Any suggestions pls.

What notebook model you have it exactly? Some notebooks dont have firewire port but if your camera has USB port can use this port. As far as I know all notebooks have USB port

You should try to reinstall Service Station, I think this should work. Just download the newest version of Toshiba service station on official Toshiba website and install it:

But dont forget to remove the old version first before you install the newest one. ;)

FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)

What is the bottom line for best quality for 720 p TV.
1.) My import is digital video 1080i to i Movie 08 (full quality)
What should I use for sharing on AppleTV
- the preset Large (which is 960x 540)
- or some custom setting 25 fps at 1220x 720? ( H.264 display dimensions at 24/25 fps is 720p (1280x720) ) - or what should the setting be??
2.) Have Windows avi older 720 *480 video, what is best setting to convert this for Apple TV? The 640 setting on QuickTime premium is not very good

Your best option if you are using NTSC footage in imovie is the export to/movie large (960 x 540) at 30 fps, the resolution won't go any higher and still work on the tv. Don't even think about changing the framerate to 24/25 fps, even though you'll be able to export to 720p (1280 x720) changing the framerate will make your video jerky.
If you are using PAL then yes you could export to 720p (even though the specs say 24 fps, 25 fps does in fact work as well), you could try a few tests yourself but I've already done them and IMHO there is so little difference between 960 x 540 and 1280 x 720 that it isn't worth messing about setting up and trying several manual exports to get the best results when you can click one button and be done.
So far a AVI conversion is concerned, I'd try mpegstreamclip, but saying that I can't really be sure. AVI is a container not a codec and I would need to know what codec is actually used inside the container to answer your question properly (Quicktime may tell you though). The problem with AVI is that it is simply so old (even microsoft abandoned it over 10 years ago), unfortunately in a small number of cases some of the codecs that were used in AVI are simply no longer able to be converted. Probably not so likely but at least you are warned.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

Digital video out not working

For some reason on my 2011 Mac Book Pro the digital video out does not work? It works just fine using the minii adapter for analog video out, but not for digital?
Any advice much appreciated!

It is working exactly as it is supposed to. You didn't read the description properly before buying.
Video mirroring is available on the iPhone 4S, not the iPhone 4.
Video out needs to be supported by the app you are using.

X1 and USB Port Replicator with digital video - hangs system

Hi
with the X1 to help with docking it everyday at the office I have a USB Port replicator with digital video. I am not using the digital video but the USB ports, head phone and mics plus ethernet.
When I plug it in it detects it OK, I then installed the software. But after reboot it looks to stall when logging into windows, screen flickers back and forth and locks up the operating system. I unlplug it and reboot and window is working fine.
Note as I mentioned I am not using the digital output but instead using an external monitor via the display port on the back of the laptop.
Also its is very slow to boot (Lenovo bios splash screen is there for about a minute)
I have gone into the bios and turned off all other bootable devices just leaving the laptops hard drive.
As a work around I have removed the software and I am getting the basic functionality of the port replicator, but not the ethernet.
I have run the update manager but does not appear to show a need to update the drivers.

Hi, I have this same exact problem.
Video (anything from youtube to downloaded shows, movies) will freeze for 5-7 seconds at a time. The sound continues to play while the video is 'frozen', and the video resumes after that.
It will happen on its own, with no bumping, but it is more prone to happen if I do something like increase the volume within the media player.
Any suggestions are much appreciated!

What kind of cable do I need to get digital video into my Imac?

I just purchased a JVC Mini DV video camera "GR-D347U" refurbished, just to get the feel of bringing digital video clips into Imovie and combining them with still clips and music. The camera came with just the AV cables and I was wondering what I need to port the video over to my Imac. There wasn't much help on their web site. They do offer a DV cable, that what I am looking for? Thanks for your help.

Nearly all MiniDV cameras have a 4pin Firewire connector. Looking at the manual (link) for the JVC confirms that.
Macs all have the 6pin Firewire connector (and later iMac have 9pin connectors too) so you simply need a 4pin-to-6pin Firewire cable like this (example).
Once connected simply load iMovie and click import.

How can I upload digital video from a HDD camcorder to iMac Intel?

I bought a Sony DCR SR100 camcorder with 30 gig HD, and the software that comes with it is Windows only, and the Mac software that they refer you to on the internet says "not Intel Core compatible"
So get this - the online support guy from Sony says to get a digital to analog conversion card to load the video thru the AV jacks. I reminded him that I'm starting with digital video in MPEG2 on the camera's hard drive - which is essentially an external hard drive. Converting to analog didn't sound right.
So there is an easy, no-brainer way to do this I'm sure (that is I hope)

iMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.6) Sony DCR SR100 HD camcorder 30 gig (nice!)

The problem (I discovered) is that the files are "muxed" which means that the audio and video are somehow intermixed, so they need to be converted into a standard that iMovieHD can read, like "DV"
There is a shareware called MPEG STREAMCLIP that converts video into other things. I tested it and it does work. I just need to figure out the most efficient way to import, convert and open in iMovie.

Ichat 2.1 and canon digital video camera problems

i have ichat 2.1 running on my b/w g3 with a 900 mhz powerlogix zif upgrade...
i recently got my hands on a cool little program called ichat usbcam...
before i got that app, ichat would not recognize my canon digital video camera via firewire...now that i got ichat usbcam, it shows up and i can use the digital video camera...
however, i can't invite my brother to a one way video chat...when i invite him, his end shows up with a white screen...no video, but audio...
he has a g4 quicksilver...he is running tiger...we both use the aim account for ichat...
any ideas??? we really need some help on this because we both have 4 year old daughters who want to video chat...
he is going to get a camera if we can get this thing working...

Sounds like you have cracked it.
Framerates are detemined by what processor you have, with some adjustment on a chat by chat basis depending what the other person can manage.
The Bitrate is controlled by what Connection Speed you have, The System Preference > Quicktime > Streaming tab setting and iChat > Preferences > Video section Bandwidth Setting, plus any adjustments to match who you are talking to.
The up speed is more important than the Download speed when we are talking ADSL connections.
Any spped test will tell you get about 80% of what the ISP says they sell you.
iChat will use about 80% of what is left (depending on settings)
It is somewhat lowered depending on the framerate your Mac can do and what other things yuo are asking the Procesor to do and how much RAM you have obviously can effect that as well.
The framerates you quote are the same as mine.
The bit rates if often what I see in iChat based on my 1Mb down /256K up service.

IMovie wont' recognize my Canon Digital Video Camera

When I hook up my Canon ZR70 MC digital video camera through my firewire port, iMovie doesn't recognize it even after I did the following:
turned the camera on and off.
took the tape in and out.
restarted computer with the camera in.
After speaking to Canon technical support, they've determined that since 'DV In' was blinking on the camcorder screen, there must be a problem with the firewire cable, the port, or I'd need a firewire update. I'm running OSX 10.4.5.
Anybody had this problem before? I doubt it's the cable or the port because both are new. And I tried it on multiple computers. Please help.

Are there any other FireWire devices attached to the computer?
Is the camera running of battery power or A/C?
