Digital8 xfer to QT or something compatible w/FCE

What's the best way to archive Digital8 for future use on FCP or FCE, without creating projects? Or is it best to create projects, put it in timeline and save a QT of it!

You're most welcome. I think you'll find lots of helpful folks here.
Let me suggest a couple of reference works to guide you along:
Final Cut Express Editing Workshop by Tom Wolsky (frequent contributor to this forum)
Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express by Diana Weynand
Each is around $25-30 on Amazon, and one of them would be a worthwhile investment, IMHO.
Apple also has a few tutorials available via the FCE website.

  • Is Quicktime 7.6.6 compatible with FCE 3.5.1?

    Hi,
Is Quicktime 7.6.6 compatible with FCE 3.5.1?
I currently have Quicktime 7.6.4 and FCE 3.5.1 and everything works well. I see that there is an update for Quicktime 7.6.6. I think the update has been around for awhile.
I've been burned in the past with upgrading QT with older versions of FCE and just want to be sure. If it's not compatible I'll stand pat. I wish Apple would tell you if an upgrade will disable older software, but I know they don't and I have to guess each time or rely on the experience of others here on this board. Yes, I could always upgrade my computer, software, etc, but I would rather save my money and use my existing stuff as long as I can.
Thank you in advance for any insight.

I can't answer your main question, but if QT 7.6.4 is working perfectly why bother to update?
I know that psychologically we are programmed to crave the latest version of everything but in many cases there is no advantage whatsoever to be had.
Having said that, I must admit I have just upgraded from Final Cut Studio 2 to version 3, which I suppose makes me something of a hypocrite, but everything I need to do could be accomplished with the earlier version!

  • Formats compatible with FCE......

Is theer a list of formats that are compatible with FCE?
Im after a small camcorder where the format is something like MOV or MP4 so that I can easily view the footage back on my system without having to mess about with other players etc.
Ive seen a couple of camcorders that output as MP4, but am wondering if I will be able to import this easily into FCE and iMovie?

To supplement Tom's response, FCE can capture/ingest DV, HDV and AVCHD from camcorders or decks that have appropriate connectivity (FireWire in the case of DV/HDV or USB in the case of AVCHD).
However you can import almost any other video *provided you convert it to QuickTime first* using either *Apple DV/DVCPRO* (NTSC or PAL as necessary) or *Apple Intermediate Codec* compression. Most people in this forum use MPEG Streamclip to convert other & odd video to QuickTime for use in FCE.

  • Formats .jpg  .avi  .mpeg   are compatible with FCE?

What formats are in really compatible with FCE, I can't import nothing....
Then... how can I change the format to another?
    Thank you very much!!

The only compatible video formats are DV, HDV and in FCE4 you can also use AVCHD.
Any other video format will have to be converted to one of those before it will work in FCE.
To convert them you will have to download MPEG Streamclip which is free but you may have to buy the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component from Apple for $20.

  • Which HDV Camcorders are compatible with FCE HD?

Where can I find a list of HDV Camcorders (preferrably Sony camcorders) whose video files are compatible and be edited by Final Cut Express HD? I have a MacBook Pro with FCE HD and now I am trying to decide on which camcorder to purchase.
Someone told me that tapeless (ie. Hard Disk Drive) camcorders are not compatible with FCE HD. Is this true?
So which camcorders are a) whose video footage could be edited by FCE HD and b) recommended by most?
    Thanks for all your help!!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Currently, iDVD do not support HD on HD-DVD.
Toast does support it in his most recent version BUNDLED with HD DVD burner.
As I know, there are only 3 company who sell HD-DVD burner.
They are very expensive, same thing for HD-DVD blank media.
The "war" between HD Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is not over and the industry (cinema, computers makers, consumers) dont know what technology will win the market.
You can shoot in HDV, convert directly from your camcorder (with sony models, see specifications of your model), and capture in SD in FCE HD. (the result on the DVD is better than shooting in SD and the process is easy)
You can capture HDV footage in ... HDV project with FCE HD set for this format (with the help of Apple intermediate Codec), edit in HDV and print to tape on your camcorder to keep and view the edited HDV content on a HD tv set.
Once the burners will be avalaible at a reasonnable cost, you will recapture your edited movie from your saved tape, and burn the movie in High definition DVD. IMovie HD or FCE HD will do this job well.
Your MacBook does'nt have a HD DVD burner (like any mac sold currently), so think about an external one.

  • How do I transfer my Wordperfect files to something compatible with an iMac

I am considering getting an iMac for our office, but I have hundreds of wordperfect and quatropro files that I will still need to access. Since the Corel software is no longer available to run on iMacs, how do I open and save the files into whatever word processing software I end up using. And preferrably not one at a time, since I have a very impatient boss to whom 30 seconds seems half a lifetime.

    Hi--
Take a look at MacLink Plus. In reading a couple of reviews, they mention that it'll do batch conversions, so you might be able to convert whole folders at at time:
    http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/index.html
I used it once upon a time, and thought it worked fine at the time.

  • What are people using to convert .3gp video files into something compatible with iMovie? Does Apple have SW to do this?

I am trying to find the best and safest way to convert .3gp video from my Blackberry into a file format that iMovie will recognize.  I see lots of potential downloads, but I am hoping for some recommendations on which SW is most helpful.  Thanks.

There is a free App called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. You can drag your .3gp into MPEG Streamclip. Then FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME.
For HD sizes (1280x720 or 1920x1080), choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
For smaller sizes, you can also use Apple Intermediate Codec, but h.264 will also work and will give a smaller file size.
Then import this new file into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIES

  • Which Audio formats are compatible with FCE?

I just bought the cutest recorder, the Zoom H1 arrived today and it's going to be so handy for capturing audio files. As I'm playing with it, the WAV format it records imports and places just fine in FCE. But for some things I want a lower quality sample which will yield a longer recording time (like leaving it on for hour or more for lecture) and tried mp3 sample rate but the mp3 sample recording does not produce sound in FCE, but just a silence with blip, blip, blip...
    Shouldn't mp3 work in FCE?
Also, I use Audacity and it opens none of the WAV or the MP3 and gives an error. I will be in audio 'he-double toothpicks' for a while until I learn how to capture, regulate, handle recorded files. Isn't there something like StreamClip for audio that will make your audio files compatible?
I don't know what I am doing here folks and need some advice please.
    TIA,
    Ken

Okay, I read that link and ordered Quicktime 7 Pro which charged me $29.99 and there is nothing to download. It turns out that it is just the key to unlock Quicktime pro from Quicktime 7. The problem is, I have Snow Leopard and am using Quicktime 10 so version 7 is an old version. I think I paid money for something I cannot use. Quicktime would have been the way to convert my files to AIFF. This is frustrating. Now I need to go find a way to get a refund from Apple.

  • Can recommend a slim/mini video camera that is compatible with FCE ?

    I have some technical problem.
My video camera is too big in size to film in between spaces. My friend has build a model of a few cluster of flats. He wants me to help him film the spaces between the flats from the bird's eye perspective. By bird's eye perspective, he meant to say he wants me to record what the bird can see if the bird fly surrounding the flats & between the flats & then make turns surrounding the buildings.
My present video is too bulky to squeeze into those small models.
I think the only way is to purchase a video camera that is so slim like a shape if pencil so that it can go in between the blocks.
Where can I buy this ? Will this type of video (if exist) records video in good quality & compatible with FCE4 ?
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You should look in Radio-Controled airplane model equipment. There are mini camera that mount on the model and broadcast the video on the air to a receiver that can be connected to a camcorder. You can connect them on any VCR

  • Every time I move something in the FCE timeline the entire timeline needs to be re-rendered.

    Tom (or ANYONE),
I'm working on a project with my students using Final Cut Express 4.01 using our iMac running OS 10.7.1.  we filmed using the Kodak zi8 in 1080p.
I have two identical set ups:  an iMac with FCE4 using a Mercury Elite AL Pro portable harddrive as the scratch disc.
On one of the two computers, whenever we add or remove something from the timeline (in a 3 minute scene) the ENTIRE timeline forces us to rerender!
It's very frustrating and making the editing process almost impossible.
    Help!
Here are a few screenshots to help in the process (hopefully):
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/pushstartwagon/6511213139/  (entire screen)
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/pushstartwagon/6511213219/ (properties of sound files)
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/pushstartwagon/6511213175/ (properties of .mov files)

The problem is that you're trying to edit H.264 clips.  Neither FCE nor FCP works with H.264 video natively, hence the need to constantly render.
To use a proper workflow, convert the H.264 files PRIOR to importing them into an FCE project.  Since FCE only works with QuickTime DV or the AIC formats, you will need to convert the files so that they will match your Sequence settings in FCE.

  • Is it possible that the camera itself isn't compatible with FCE?

    Hello,
I am working on a macbook osx in final cut express with a JVC mini DV GR-D70U camcorder. I have set my easy setup to DV-NTSC but FCE is still not recognizing my camera. My camera is set on play back and connected with a USB. The last film I created was with a european camera, so maybe there is one more setting I need to change? Could it be possible that my camera isn't compatible with my operating system?
    Thank you,
    Emily

My camera is set on play back and connected with a USB.
USB will work for downloading stills photos but not for video from the tape.
Get yourself a 4-6 pin firewire/iLink cable and use Log and Capture in FCE.
The FCE Easy Setup sounds right for NTSC footqge.

  • Are the fcp lpugins compatible with fce?

I am running the original FCE 1.0 Can't exactly afford to keep upgrading. (didn't use it when I got my new computer, now I am starting to)
if i download these free filters and transitions, are they compatible with both FCP and FCE and what versions.
I don't see anything on the sites saying anything about compatability.
    Thanks alot,
    Jason

Normally FCE and FCP transitions and filters are interchangeable as the two programs are virtually identical.
If you click on the hotlink below you will get access to over a hundred FREE Filters etc. :-

  • Less and less camcorders compatible with FCE ?????

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm looking at a lot of the 2007 HD consumer camcorders and there are less options available for MAC users. Even those at the $1600 mark. Are we going to see a decline in FCE use because APPLE is not stepping up to the plate? I mean c'mon, the APPLE compatibility list is so old, can they at least look at some new models and stick them on the list? I eman it's not alot. Look at the new Panasonic consumer camcorders, not many in HD but are they compatible? I'm hearing that are not with FCE, whereas the older GS models and others were? Whats the true story with this?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
The compatibility list is obsolete, and in my own opinion it's give more confusion than information.
As prices go down for HDV consumer camera, the spec of camcorders going in the same direction.
Recording on hard disk or DVD allows to minimize the form factory of camera and the cost of the camera itself.
Push record, push stop, eject the DVD and watch the result on your TV: that's the consumer way to make movie.
In the vast majority, consumers do not edit movies ( do you remember plain 8mm film? "no editing" for the mass, same thing for VHS video) .
So camcorder's company focus on this mass of consumers: they simply don't need editing capability.
FCE is not used by the vast majority.
FCE is aimed toward prosumers and professional market: those persons do editing in an extensive way and the use prosumer or professionnal gears. Gears that use the reliable and mature system: DV (in all flavors) and HDV recorded on...DV tapes.
I'm pretty sure that the next generation of iMovie will support newer recording media (it actually support DV, HDV and mpeg-4(a mass consumers format) before apple PRO applications like FCE.

  • Hard drive cameras compatible with FCE 4?

I am comparing cameras for purchase for our video broadcast program. I like the idea of the hard-drive camera so we eliminate tape and all its aggravations.
However, I notice the hard drive cameras interface with USB. Can FCE import these files?
    Thank you.

    Hi Chris
What tape brand are you using... to have bleed-through sounds like very poor quality tapestock.
I have never had a problem as you mention in the 8 years I have been using mini-dv tapes in dvcpro vt players, the only problem I have had is with JVC cassettes, snapping and needing to be spliced, here in South Africa we tend to use SONY/PANASONIC tapestock.
Really if you go back in the forum you will find a huge discussion about the pros/cons of hard-drive camera's vs minidv camera's.
With mini-dv you do not need the camera to edit from, in the case of hard-drive camera's the camera is out of duty for the length of the edit, with mini-dv the footage is separate from the camera.
If it was me, I would either argue for a bigger budget based on a number of factors. Final Cut Express is capable of dealing with AVCHD footage after it has been converted, if you do not like this then Final Cut Studio 2 which would cost the same as a Sony HVR A1.
Tape stock is much cheaper than camera's or P2 memory cards.
Something we use here is the FIRESTORE external hard drive that is attached to the camera and records footage at the same time as the camera records to tape. Very handy!!!!
That would solve the problem, you have instant access to the footage and an archive tape.

  • FX programs compatible with FCE HD 3.0?

I bought my copy of FCE HD 3.0 last year on the basis of an Apple customer service rep telling (and I quote) " there will always be an upgrade path to FC PRO". Techinically, that's still true but you have to buy the whole Pro studio package now just to get "MOTION".
As I delve deeper in the Live Type effects that came bundled with FCE HD, I realized that having a full fledged FX program would (or should) let me do things I want to do much quicker than mucking about in either Live Type or FCE.
Since Jobs & company have now gone over to the dark side and adopted the GATES mantra of "more money and don't forget to screw the little people", some of us can't afford the ultra bucks to buy a whole a suite just to get an FX program. My sense of betrayal by them is palpable.
So can anyone please tell me a decent FX program to get that will run on my G4 1.2 GHZ, OSX 10.3.9 machine that will be compatible with import to FCE HD 3.0? OR how to get a new and registerable copy of motion?
I'm pretty sure I will never buy another thing from Apple since they have zero allegiance to their existing customers.
    Ken
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.2GHZ

    Here's a recent example.
I was making an opening screen in LIVE TYPE with a motion background and then had another 6 layers of motion objects that apperared and disappeared at different times. Some of the objects I chose played at full opacity and didn't give a smooth appearance of fading in and then fading out as another object was coming on.
The sceen was supposed to be similar to the big bang, but with other things happening before it and then dying out.
I discovered that there was no way to vary opacity in LIVE TYPE over the length of each layer (sort of fade in and fade out).
I realize I could export each object layer separately from live type to FCE HD and then change opacity in the time line, but the little light bulb went on and I said , hmmm maybe it's time to buy "MOTION" or some thing like it.
