Digitising problem...

Hi all,
I seem to be having problems digitising DVCAM footage using the firewire port at the front of my G5.
I am running a 4 x 2.5GHz G5 with 4.5GB RAM. And I have FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9.
I am using an M10 deck to digitise. The ports at the rear of my G5 digitise okay, but when I use the port at the front I get a sort of 'pixalated effect'. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem.

the problem could be pointing to a bad port in front,
capture from the back

  • Footage problems from digitising with Canon XF305 to FCP

    I have uploaded my footage no problem from a canon 305 to FCP (7) using log and transfer but when I play back the footage it has lines going through it when the subject is moving. I may have the incorrect settings or something. When I put a clip onto the timeline it says it amends the settings to the clip but the clip remains the same. There are no issues with the camera and uplaoding to avid (i don't have avid but other footage from the same camera was digitised fine).
    Help! I can upload a clip tonight as its pretty strange but I'm sure its just my lack of editing wisdom and its probably something really easy to resolve.
    Thanks in advance.

    No change but i did upload a small clip to youtube from my capture scratch and the lines dont appear :/ weird! http://youtu.be/uOUdrqL4ISc (put it on HD)
    Do you have any idea what else cud course the problem?

  • Strange Problems When Batch Digitising

    I'm having some bizzare digitising issues.
    Sometimes while batch loading clips I get the broken TC message ( with dvc pro) no actual timecode breaks
    Other times it will capture what I thought was moving video but once loaded the clip has frozen parts
    Also now having some sync issues with audio and video clips
    I upgraded to the latest pro apps support before these issues.
    Lots of storage space, trashed prefs etc.

    Here is an update...It has been narrowed down to my x raid.
    Doesn't matter what is batch captured 10Bit u or just DV it dropps frams when loading to the xserve raid. Now I've narrowed it down to audio only. Capture video without any issues but capture with video + sound or sound only it will drop frames.

  • HD Capture problem all of a sudden

    Hi all,
    Very strange thing happening when I try to capture from our usual JH3 HDCAM machine into PPro CS5.5.0 (via blackmagic card- specs below in sig)...
    via HD-SDI port I am seeing video and via remote I can control the deck and log clips, etc. But when I go to either batch capture from project panel, or capture direct from capt panel it is going through the motions and says 'Capturing...etc' however the recording counter and GB writing to disk info doesn't move - stays on 00:00:00:00. Nothing writes to disk. The tape will just carry on playing to the end unless I hit ESC to abort.
    Log report just says failed - abort (because I hit ESC) and no resulting file is written to disk. No dropped frames, just nothing!?? I am capturing HD 1080 50i uncompressed 10bit. Also tried JPEG/DVCPROHD but nothing.
    HOWEVER - Bizarrely, if I switch output on machine to SD-SDI and then change capt settings in PPro to SD PAL 16:9 it works. Also if connecting our digibeta machine capturing standard SD it is fine.
    I've not updated OS, PPro or BMD drivers and prefs are same as always been. I'm not keen on updating to 5.5.2 in middle of a project incase it throws up conflicts with other s/w & drivers - unless there is a known fix for this I've not found?
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance! nightmare!!
    Cheers,

    Yes, I tried that route...seems it's not a hardware/driver problem. HD capture works via Blackmagic's Media Express, but unfortunately using that is not an option for logging/digitising this project.
    It's a weird one - like I said, it all worked fine a few weeks ago with the exact same kit/configs and nothing has been installed/updated since.
    Do any Adobe engineers read these forums, or do I need to submit a bug report? Last time I did that it took months to get anywhere! :-(

  • *FCP capture & compatibility problems with JVC BR-HD50 deck*

    Please help.
    I’m looking for someone who has shot w/ JVC GY-HD200 cameras, using JVC Pro HD MINI dv tape stock and uses a JVC BR-HD50 deck and edits on the most recent (6.03 update) version of FCP. Or some amazing, savvy whiz that has solved this problem.
    I now know that Apple does not support the JVC BR-HD50 deck. However, Apple does support the JVC GY-HD200 camera.
    I have more than 100 plus-hours of footage (shot on JVC proHD mini dv w/ 2 JVC GY-HD200 cam) that is begging to be digitized. I’m not going to ruin my heads by digitizing all this footage from the camera.
    I need a straight answer boys…All I need to know is what deck to use…
    Can someone please tell me what deck is compatible, is supported by Apple AND is available?
    As far as I know there isn’t any” JVC HD deck that’s “currently available” AND “supported” my Mac.” Yes, I’ve been the mac page - Spoke w/ B&H and other outlets and the JVC 6000u is no longer available.
    I spoke with a very patient FCP tech-support fellow & he suggested the JVC CJ VHI…or another FCP tech recommended the “no longer available 6000. These don’t work.
    The bottom line is that my new deck doesn’t fully communicate w/ FCP. (TC issues) Having consulted many savvy FCP editors, IT pros specializing in video & mac, a smart & determined video guy from “B&H,” as well as the fine gentleman at Apple (never spoke to a woman) who are apparently FCP whizzes—I’ve gotten a lot of, “try this,” or “apple doesn’t support the br-hd50 deck or “it looks like your (brand new, custom loaded tower) doesn’t recognize any component that uses fire wire – you need to take it to an apple store.” Which was not true. My fire wire ports work just fine.
    Perhaps Brandon or Jeff (the fantastic mac FCP support) or a few of the folks from JVC could chime in…Kunihiko Sato-san or anyone who is innovative, smart or perhaps wears a black turtleneck. Please only respond with proven results not theories… and “yes” I tried to load video without the latest FCP update, changed cables & tried all the troubleshooting techniques from the Apple FCP support staff. In addition, I “updated “my brand new” JVC deck - Hiromi Minakawa-san?
    I’d greatly appreciate some help with this. I’m not a FCP, Mac or super-tech guru. Thank you!

    Can you tell us exactly what the problem is? Is the computer not recognising the deck at all or is it importing broken clips with huge gaps? (the usual problem).
    If you are using FCP 6 try bringing the footage in as ProRes. This usually brings in the footage with only a small number of frames missing from the beginning of each shot.
    This camera is at it's best if you use the DR HD100 onboard hard drive, save yourself hours of digitising and keep the original tapes as archive / backup and no quality loss (or missing frames for that matter). I have clients who post produce themselves who use this camera purely for this feature.

  • Problem refreshing an Oracle table in MapInfo that's been updated in Oracle

    Dear all
    I am doing some digitising work in MapInfo Professional 8, using a table stored in Oracle 10.2g. I have completed the bulk of my digitising and the polygons have been written back to the Oracle database without any issues.
    As I am working with several maps coving the same area, but from different dates, I have simply been copying the shapes from one field to another, for areas that are the same on other maps. This avoids having to digitise an area more than once.
    Here is an example of my table:
    map_index_id  original_map_publication_id  name_of_feature         geographical_coordinates
    5000840       200016                       NORTH STREET            MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY [1a]
    5000841       200016                       NORTH STREET QUADRANT   MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY [2a]
    5000843       200016                       OLD STEINE              MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY [3a]
    5000955       200021                       NORTH STREET            null [1b]
    5000956       200021                       NORTH STREET QUADRANT   null [2b]
    5000957       200021                       OLD STEINE              null [3b]The idea is that the geometry of 1a is copied to 1b, 2a to 2b and so on. The script I am using to do this, is as follows:
    undefine name_of_feature_to_be_used
    undefine name_of_feature_to_be_updated
    UPDATE MAP_INDEX  B
    SET (B.geographical_coordinates) =
    (SELECT A.geographical_coordinates
    FROM MAP_INDEX A
    WHERE A.original_map_publication_id=&&original_map_to_be_used
    AND A.name_of_feature='&&name_of_feature_to_be_used')
    WHERE B.original_map_publication_id=original_map_to_be_updated
    AND B.name_of_feature='&&name_of_feature_to_be_updated';That works okay. The problem I have is that whenever I make changes to the geographical_coordinates column, which is an sdo_geometry column, the changes are not then being picked up by MapInfo Professional when I click refresh DBMS table in that program.
    If I make additional changes in MapInfo and then save the table out, it simply wipes all the changes I have made in Oracle, using my above SQL script.
    I believe what happens when a table is first made mapping in MapInfo, is that MapInfo takes the Oracle sdo_column: geographical_coordinates and links this to a MapInfo column called obj , since MapInfo seems to only allow the spatial column to be called obj. All other columns are brought in using their Oracle names. What I think it isn't doing though, is relinking this column at any point afterwards.
    Am I correct and if so, does anyone have a away round this problem? I made my Oracle table "download table [link to Oracle]". Would keeping the table live, make any difference?
    Kind regards
    Tim

    Hi Ivan and everyone
    Thank you for your reply. The geometries are not always the same. I have now found out what the problem is and how to solve it and I will explain this for the benefit of others.
    When I update a spatial column for a row ,outside of MapInfo Professional 8, it is not picking up the updates.
    When I update a non-spatial column for a row, outside of MapInfo Professional 8, it is picking up the updates.
    When I update a non-spatial column and a geometry column for a row, outside of MapInfo Professional 8, it is picking up the updates for both columns.
    Therefore a solution to my problem is to create an additional non-spatial column, which I update everytime I copy the geometry values. Then when I refresh the table in MapInfo, it will pick up the geometry changes. I do not understand why MapInfo will not pick up the updates to the spatial columns on their own but it is not doing this.
    I did a test to see what would happen if I updated three rows where all three rows had there geometry values updated but only two rows had a non-spatial column value updated.
    When opened up the table in MapInfo, using the following MapInfo SQL:
    Select * From "user name here"."MAP_INDEX_FOR_MAPINFO_USE"
    WHERE not GEOGRAPHICAL_COORDINATES Is Null
    AND original_map_publication_id=200010
    AND original_map_sheet_number_id=330010it brought in only the two rows whose non-spatial column had been updated. The row where only it's spatial column was amended, was not brought in. There was no other rows brought in because no other row for that publication and sheet had been updated.
    Why this is occurring I do not know. It may be that issue was resolved in later versions of MapInfo. I am very happy to have found a solution to my problem. However I do feel it is something I should not be having to do in the first place, no matter how pleased I am to have found a solution.
    Kind regards
    Tim

  • Vinyl digitising to PC

    For years now i have been digitising my vinyl ocllection to my pc.
    I have not yet been 100% satisfied with the way the sound comes out...
    I don't know if the vinyls are a bad press....
    I've often wondered if the soundcard would matter but people have said not...
    What i mean by that is, would the soundcard make a diffference to the recording itself?
    Anyway for 2 years i have been using a Belt driven Numark TT-USB with a Concrode Elektro Ortofon Stylus going direct into my USB.
    One of my old mates ripped his collection also and he had some tunes i also had.
    His rips of them sounded a lot better! It's hard to explain but mine sounded like more of an 'outdoor' kind of sound.... too trebly.. Not very much bass in them.
    I asked him if he had adjusted anything and he said no, all my levels were set to '0' as he was using an Ecler Nuo II mixer and a Technics MK5 Turntable.
    I'm getting really fussy now and want the best in my rips. I just dont know what i'm doing wrong...
    I am stuck because i don't know if it's an issue with my turntable, whether usb turntables are not the thing to use?, or even belt driven ones? Or even a completely different problem....
    Would the earthing affect it at all?
    He also told me he was using Monster RCA cables.
    I have got my eye on a technics but i dont wanna wanna be spending up to 2 grand on equipment which MIGHT solve the problem.......
    Pls help.
    Cheers guys.

    Hi,
    If you use an external USB audio interface you will not need to use a soundcard since the USB interface sends digital data right into your USB port thus circumventing the sound card. Some USB audio interfaces have a built-in audio pre-amp (i.e. a pre-amp with RIAA decompression) as well as line level input. With a built-in audio pre-amp you need to make a judgement call on the quality of that amp. Talk to friends or take advice from folks on this forum - if someone has had good results with a built-in pre-amp then you can trust that you will get good results also.
    A poor quality audio pre-amp is one of the problems with the Vestax TUB-2 that I bought. My Edirol does not have a built-in audio pre-amp so I need a separate one in the path - hence I use a beaten up DJ mixer in between my decks and the USB interface.
    One other thing to look out for when buying a USB audio interface is whether it also has audio output. If it does, you can connect that to another amplifier/speaker set up and monitor what you are recording. Again, the TUB-2 does not have that so you can't hear yourself teeing up the stylus and getting the start point just right. Granted that most recording software has a monitor feature but that only works once you have started recording not when you are preparing to record. Also with the audio output, you can playback from the PC to the USB port and it will do digital-to-analog conversion and play through your amp. I do that all the time with AA3 - the Edirol USB interface is both my input and output device.

    Hi,
    Thank you very much for your reply.
    So can you all confirm that i dont need to change my soundcard? BUT only if i were using the 'Behringer UFO' Steve recommended or the 'Edirol USB interface' Skajam recommended? So if i were to use either or those 2 then i can stay put with my Realtek AC'97 as it wouldnt be involved as i'm going through USB and not line in right?
    I noticed skajam that you said 'mixer or preamp' is the 'Edirol US' a Preamp? Basically could i just plug that straight into my Technics MK5 (when i buy one) and go straight into the PC's USB and that would be all i needed? If not, is that 'Behringer UFO' a preamp and would that do the same?I originally thought of this as needing the turntable, the behringer or edirol usb then straight into the pc from them?
    Please correct me if im wrong.
    Appreciate all your help fellas
    Thank you.

  • Camera Problems with iOS4

    Hi All
    Has anyone experienced the problem of their camera on the 3GS now having a 'pink' haze on all pictures / videos that are taken?
    Even appears on the preview and on the photo
    Look forward to hearing from anyone else with similar issue.
    QubixTech

    Hi Paulo,
    I'm suspecting that Apple doesn't regard this as a bug.
    My personal thoughts that it is a silly feature to reset the file count each time you empty the camera roll, or better yet it could have a feature you could turn on/off in the settings like many cameras allow you to do.
    If you want them to address it, send a feedback email to them here
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
    I suspect that what has happened, is the developers have designed the iOS4 software around iPhoto and not anything else.
    iPhoto creates Events based on the digitised time of the file, that is, the time you took the photo. So it effectively creates a sub folder called an Event and puts the photos there. When you download the photos from the iPhone straight into iPhoto and there were multiple days over which the photos were taken, it creates multiple Events. So in saying that, it doesn't really care what the file is called and if there are a thousand IMG_001 files in iPhoto in a thousand different Events, iPhoto and your computer had no trouble in finding them all.
    You are like me and use Image Capture to import the photos rather than iPhoto.
    My work around is to select the photos by each day in Image Capture and download them to a folder that includes the date they were taken (eg 100925 BBQ at the Beach (I add the date at the start so when I am searching thru finder, the folders are listed in the order I took them)) and have them deleted when imported automatically from the iPhone.
    It not great, but it works for me and even though I may end up with a thousand IMG_001 files, they don't all end up in the same folder, left for me to work out which ones they are.
    Hope this helps

  • HDV import problems with Leopard

    I recently 'upgraded' to Leopard, when I try and import HDV (From HV20) to my iMac it has become a green-tinged video. Occasionally it will have flashes of the actual colour, which lead me to believe it may be a problem with the Firewire cable I'm using. So I changed my Firewire and the same thing is happening. It worked perfectly before on Tiger. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can do?
    Thanks

    Yes, upgraded to Leopard and found the same problem going from my Sony A1 to 2.4ghz iMac. iMovie digitises a green & purple solarised picture when importing in HDV, but is fine when importing DV. When I try to import in Final Cut it crashes the program outright. It's obviously a bug, I can't understand why Apple aren't on to this it must be driving everyone nuts and costing pro users a lot of money. C'mon guys, you started getting posts in November 2007 about this, you need to get a fix out pronto! This is not what we move to Apple for!!

  • Audio channels 3/4 problem

    Hi
    Ive been capturing a project with no problems so far and now im trying to capture the material from the second mic (channels 3/4). Ive set the capture presets, the correct sample rate and checked audio only. 'Capture Now' gives me no preview (but is checked and does working when combined with a video capture) and at the end of 'Capture Now' i press ESC to stop but i dont recieve a file.If I log the clip in and outs, name it and go to Capture Clip, another clip logging window appears (???). If i go to Batch/Capture selected clip i get 'insufficient disk space' on a drive that has 168Gig on it. Ive ditched prefs, and run Disk Warrior with no change. Who wants a bite?
    Many thanks

    A little further on and ive figured out that the Capture Preset Digitiser option can be set to none. In the log and Capture Window/Capture settings i deselected Capture Audio and Video to separate files so i dont get the disk space message now and as regards A V and (A), the V has a value now. I have a visual and audio preview too. I had to re log the clip after changing the settings (i this what the use logged clip settings check in for in capture ie.... if you uncheck it you can preserve the in and out points, change the settings and do a second pass for example?)
    Okay so far now why is the capture shorting out mid clip and going back to the beginning...is there no end?

  • Problems finalising an iMovie5 to iDVD6 project

    I've spent days trying to solve my particular problem on my own so thought I'd see if anyone else has had a similar experience and can suggest a workround.
    I'll try and be brief: I've been working for months on a movie celebrating my mum & dad's Golden Wedding, involving the digitising of old 8mm cine film and video, scanning old pics, etc and putting together a 'classic' compilation of Golden Memories in half a dozen iMovie5 projects.
    I'd upgraded my whole iLife suite to version 6, excluding iMovie6 because I didn't want to have any conflicts with this project in the transition to the new version (something I'd had problems with in earlier upgrading experiences).
    I created the iDVD project with no problems - and actually enjoyed the experience of compiling the Big Picture with all the source movies, pics and sounds into the one place - and was very proud of the end result after 'trialling' out the navigation and links via DVD Player.
    Except now I can't seem to get a disc burned so I can now share it round with the rest of the family. Initially I had 73 minutes of video, including the menus, all of which would take up 3.9Gb of a DVD - according to the project profile - but the encoding would get 90% there and then announce various problems. I have over 35Gb free space on my Start Up Disk for the encoding and I've let it go overnight three times overnight, with no other apps running. After deleting one movie 'extra' that I created - bringing the space to be used down to 3.8Gb - the project successfully encoded and I managed to burn a disc. I got very excited by this and promptly stuck in a second blank disc to swiftly burn another one.
    When I viewed the first disc on my domestic player and TV, the links on the main movie - a 20 minute montage with scene selection 'chapters' created in iMovie - the scenes selected don't link to the actual movie scenes and link to other individual movies in a submenu I created for 'outtakes' and other extras. In the second disc that burned selecting the movie scenes brings up the correct video, but they run with the audio from the scenes that follow.
    The first disc I used was an Apple DVD and the second one was a Verbatim (one that I can print graphics on) but I've never had problems with this before. It's strange that the two discs play so differently, especially as they follow up on the same encoding process. When I review the project on the Mac again, everything plays fine and the scenes all correspond correctly from the scene selection menu.
    Anybody got any suggestions what what I might be doing wrong?
    Cheers
    Bill

    Well, I've tried rebuilding the entire project from scratch and, while the main 20 minute movie works fine from the title menu, if I try using scene selection to skip to a particular scene from the 7 'chapters' I designated within iMovie they now all skip to a single movie I added in as a submenu 'extra'. Totally frustrating - and expensive - as I've now burned 6 useless DVDs. It's the length of time it takes to produce the faulty discs that is most annoying. All the 'tests' while running it on the Mac are fine.
    Does anyone know if I should now just bite the bullet and upgrade the iMovie project from 5 to 6, as that may be where the conflict arises? It's just that I've heard that iMovie 6 is a bit sluggish. Is this right?

  • Screen, digitiser or somethng else ?

    Hi,
    Bought my son a Lumia 520 for Xmas - He dropped it yesterday (hole in his jacket pocket) and there are 2 cracks accross the top of the screen, that;s all - and you can see the home screen.
    However, the screen now doesn;t work - so doesnt repond to being touched. I am going to do the repair myself rather than spend a fortune sending it back to Nokia - so is it likely to be (a) the screen, (b) the digitiser or (c) comething completely different and I should remember the fool I am and let nokia take care of it....
    Many thanks all.

    We can't comment on this question here in detail, but let's just say Google and YouTube will be your friend.
    Additionally we can tell you Nokia only offers a complete screen unit (Screen with Digitiser) for all it's models as spare to repair centres. Depending on which region you are in you may be able to order genuine parts from a Nokia Care Point.

  • Lumia 720 Screen problem

    My Nokia Lumia 720 has been behaving strangely for a few weeks now. I can turn on the phone but then when I try to enter my PIN number the screen will not allow me to. The screen jumps around erratically. I've tried doing a soft reboot & a hard reboot with no real success. I've done some research on the internet look on Nokia forums to find a solution and I've come to learn that other people are experiencing the exact same problem. Last week I had an accident with my phone, it fell out of my hand and cracked the screen. It was a very small crack on the corner of the screen (the black part of the screen) The phone still works apart from the issue I had before the phone fell. I've just gotten back from a Nokia Care Centre in Bellville, Cape Town called Cellectro. The technician of the store had a look at the phone and suggested i have the phone's screen replaced at a cost of R1900 (One Thousand Nine Hundred Rand) before he can check if the phone's hardware is faulty....That don't make much sense to me because I had the problem before the phone fell. Please advise what I can do to fix the problem.

    Had the exact same problem with my Lumia 720 screen — the tiniest conceivable crack in the corner, and terrible screen jitters predating that. Went to Nokia Care and they told me the same thing they told you: broken, therefore out of warranty. And they quoted a fantastic price for part replacement. They wanted to replace the LCD and the digitiser. What I've been told to try, and I will just now at an independent repair shop (regardless of whether it voids the warranty, of which there's four months left), is to replace just the digitiser, because the LCD itself appears to work fine. This is much cheaper. Will tell you if that works — but in the meantime, what did you do with your 720 ultimately, and did it work?
    Thanks.

  • A problem with threads

    I am trying to implement some kind of a server listening for requests. The listener part of the app, is a daemon thread that listens for connections and instantiates a handling daemon thread once it gets some. However, my problem is that i must be able to kill the listening thread at the user's will (say via a sto button). I have done this via the Sun's proposed way, by testing a boolean flag in the loop, which is set to false when i wish to kill the thread. The problem with this thing is the following...
    Once the thread starts excecuting, it will test the flag, find it true and enter the loop. At some point it will LOCK on the server socket waiting for connection. Unless some client actually connects, it will keep on listening indefinatelly whithought ever bothering to check for the flag again (no matter how many times you set the damn thing to false).
    My question is this: Is there any real, non-theoretical, applied way to stop thread in java safely?
    Thank you in advance,
    Lefty

    This was one solution from the socket programming forum, have you tried this??
    public Thread MyThread extends Thread{
         boolean active = true;
         public void run(){
              ss.setSoTimeout(90);
              while (active){
                   try{
                        serverSocket = ss.accept();
                   catch (SocketTimeoutException ste){
                   // do nothing
         // interrupt thread
         public void deactivate(){
              active = false;
              // you gotta sleep for a time longer than the
              // accept() timeout to make sure that timeout is finished.
