Digitizing 23.976 footage, but getting some 29.97 clips

Hi everyone,
I'm currently digitizing about 20 hours of footage shot on a Panasonic DVX100 at 23.976 fps.
I set my capture to remove the Advanced Pulldown, and things are working OK (the normal TC breaks, etc.).
I've had two clips that came into my system at 29.97 fps, without me changing any settings (all other clips on the 2 tapes in question came in at 23.976). Does this mean that for those 2 clips the footage actually was recorded at 29.97 fps? Is there any way to tell? Or is there another kind of problem that can cause FCP to "miss" the pulldown?

No - don't do that. The cadence in 24PA is different (and visually glitchy). It is designed for easy removal of the 3:2 pulldown frames. Once you've shot 24PA, you should remove the pulldown and edit at 24. You would have had to SHOOT at 24P to edit at 29.97

here's a visual representation of 24P with pulldown added to be recorded on a 29.97 tape (this is how all feature films are broadcast on NTSC)

You can see from these that while 24PA is not as visually properly spaced, it is easier to drop a frame on a regular basis rather than re-assembling a frame from fields in different frames that 24P requires.
SO. If your goal is simply a film look, shoot 24P and edit in normal 29.97 NTSC. If your goal is to go back to film (or MAYBE DVD), that is a reason to shoot 24PA and edit in 24 fps (23.976 for you purists).

    Can anyone tell me how can I solve this problem, because further I need to pass this javascript variable val to a server side script using Xmlhttp method.
    Presently when I am passing the variable, it doesn't get saved on the server which I intend to do after passing the variable.
    Any Suggestions??

    If really want to convert the Java string to Javascript String then do

    • iMovie ill behaving - Trash the iMovie pref file - use to set things right
    • in reg. to Photos - Did You change iPhoto Photo Library - Then iMovie get's lost as it peeks into iPhoto on start up to see where photos are stored. Set iPhoto back to first Photo Library (when iMovie is not running) then start iMovie.

    You have posted to the iTunes Match forum, which your question does not seem to be related to. Is your question concerning iTunes Match or syncing with iTunes via USB?

    What's the origin of this external drive? It sounds very much like it's a Windows-formatted (NTFS) drive which Macs can't write to. If you can, copy the files off the drive, reformat it as Mac format (using Disk Utility) and copy the files back. If you need to continue writing to it from a Windows PC, you should format it ExFAT in Disk Utility.

There are 12,733 songs, a few dozen of which are not going to be in the Apple music library because they are unique to my collection. Also, some titled "Track XX" and no artist. I assume these would either not upload or else just be uploaded. But, after an overnight of step 2, the iTunes match program was still on song number 7384 or 12733 (it was on that number for over 12 hours). Looking in the music library, activating the iCloud icon and status fields, there were hundreds of songs with the status "waiting."

    Well it could still be a software problem if you installed a third party program after the OS X wipe and install, because by booting into Safe Mode it disables certain functions of OS X and hardware.     If you restored any sort of software from backup like TimeMachine, it likely was corrupted data and now is returned.

    I explained it most in my question but I am getting charged double for songs that I have already paid for and am not going to pay for twice because that is messed up. But I want to get some apps from the store and it wont let me because of $5.25. Who can I talk to about resolving this issue?

    You're right, it would have been covered under warranty. But because of the user damage, chances are there's a 200-something dollar fee . If you explain to them that it had a defect previously, they might replace it for you at no charge. **MIGHT**. But they would have to believe that it had a defect previously.

    The easiest way would probably be to recover the data of the old account and change it to match your current info, after that you can continue to use the account without any problems. To recover your account go to: Apple - My Apple ID
    Alternatively if you want to start a new account do it and then contact iTunes support to see if the y can transfer your purchases (I know of cases on which they have done it)

    So I just changed from an iphone4S to an iphone 5 because my screen didn't work any longer on the 4s but the phone itself still works so I managed to get all my contacts etc BUT for some reason I can't transfer all my music across to itunes and therefore I can't get it onto my new phone, it only transfers about 50% of it.
    Then when i go into music on the iphone 5 it shows the music but won't let you play anything and just flicks through all the songs without playing anything.

    I believe that all audiobooks are supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them requiring the one-time only download.   • How to get proper 23.976 footage from PF24

    Hello,
    I have a Canon HF M300 which uses AVCHD. In the preferences of Log and Transfer there is a box checked off that says "remove advanced pulldown and duplicate frames". Do I need to do anything else to this PF24 footage if that is checked? Do I need to uncheck this with my 60i footage?
    I read about pulldown removal everywhere and I used Cinetools to do it and then put that on a 23.976 timeline, I also put the same clip in the timeline without doing anything after log and transfer and I cannot see a difference. The only difference I see is that the new clip actually says 23.98 in the clip info while the other still says 29.97.
    Also, when I change my sequence settings to what I think matches the clip, it always says sequence settings don't match clip settings when I import the clip. I cannot see any difference in the sequence settings and clip settings though. When I say yes and change it, I see weird artifacts once in a while, and when I don't change it, it seems fine. Does this mean anything is wrong?

    Okay, so strike my wondering about having 24 fps footage on the memory card.
    Looking back at your original post, it sounds like you're seeing exactly what you should be seeing.
    In PF24 mode, your camera is seeing 24 frames per second, but doing an internal 3:2 pulldown conversion from 24 to 60i (a.k.a. 29.97) as it writes the video file to the memory card. As such, all files recorded in this mode would show a frame rate of 29.97 (however, it could be noted as 29.97, 59.94, 30i, or 60i depending on which application you're in). Since your footage that's running at 29.97 has been pulled down from 24 fps, you can remove the 3:2 pulldown (however, this can be referred to as "pull it back up" or "inverse telecine"). Think of "pulldown" as pulling progressive frames down to interlaced fields. And, if your interlaced fields contain pulldown, you can think of "pull up" as pulling interlaced fields with 3:2 pulldown up to progressive frames. While this might sound like the craziest thing on earth, it's served the film industry well for decades ever since the introduction of video.
    Simply put, your camera original clips should show a frame rate of 29.97.
    If you remove the 3:2 pulldown, your converted files should show 23.98 (23.976 rounded up).
    As far as the message from Final Cut Pro about the source clip not matching the Sequence settings, the easiest way to modify your Sequence settings is to click "Yes" when this dialog box appears. Most likely, you're just dealing with a frame rate difference in this case (i.e. your footage is running at 23.98 while your Sequence is running at 29.97).
    If you're going to remove the 3:2 pulldown, you need to do it before you start editing. An edited 60i master based on 60i 3:2 pulldown source will not pull up cleanly due to the the mixed cadence that's inherently a result of having been editing this type of video (phew, say that five times fast). Cadence refers to the 3:2 pulldown pattern that was used. It's consistent from the head to tail of any clip that was recorded continuously. If you create an edit, then you shift that cadence pattern temporally.

    Make sure that yo have the boxed chanced to only sync the checked music. It appears that it is trying to sync ore than those.
    You can try unsycing all music and resyncing.

Maybe you are looking for
