Digitizing mass quantities of photos

I have a couple thousand 4x6 photos (I also have the corresponding negatives) that I want to digitize, organize in iPhoto and eventually archive to DVD. I have a flatbed scanner, but scanning the photos is slow and tedious (rotate, crop, adjust levels, etc...) and does not yield very high quality results (at least my scanner doesn't). I'm interested in hearing from others that have experience digitizing a mass quantity of photos and how it was best accomplished. Thank you in advance for your replies.

If you have the negatives you will get _much_ better results from scanning them. There is more "infomation" on the negative. Paper does not contain the range of tones and the printing process introduces some optical blurring.
Assuming the camera you used was just "decent" (Not an SLR on a tripod) then your negatives might have 40 to 50 lines per milimeter of resolation. The 35mm frame size is 36x24. You would want to scan them at 3600x2400 at least. this means
8.6 megapxel scans or 2400 DPI optical resolution scanner.
If you were a very carful photographer, using good equipment and technique you might have up to 80 or more lines per mm on your negs. but half that is more typical of a hand help point and shoot 35mm camera. You would want an 18MB scan to capture all the information on a good 35mm negative and 1/2 the scan file size for a frame shot with a small "point and shot" camera.
So you have some options
1) Put up with poor quality scans. By "poor" I mean that the scan does not capture all of the image quality that is
in the negative. But this is OK if you don't need large prints and mainly look at photos on a monitor
2) Buy a scanner that can scan negative with at least
12-bits per color chanel and 2400 DPI native resoluion
or 4800 DPI if you have better quality negatives.
3) Pay someone a couple bucks per image to to the work for you.
The cost difference between #2 and #3 depends on the number of images. The breakeven might happen at about 1,000 images. Good negative scanners cost well over $1K.
When doing scans you always need to look at the final product. Are you going to "adjust" the images with Photoshop and make 8x10 prints? If so you will need a full 18MB scan from the negative. Or you going to show there on a monitor? if so a 200DPI scan of the print is good enough.
The next question is: "Is iPhoto the right tool for organizing thousands of images?" 2,000 imaes at 10MB each means 200GB of data. I'd prefer to keep that much data organized into some kind of folder strucure and iPhoto does not allw that.

  • Is there a way to mass/multi delete photos in all messages without deleteing the message

i have iOS 7, iPhone 4s and Mavericks.
i know i can tap and hold on the photo and the "more" option appears, then flip through the conversation and select individual messages to delete within that conversaion. but i have so many ongoing texts that i dont want to delete, and most have many photos within the message that go months back that i dont need. i dont want to delete the entire conversation but i dont need the photos embedded in the message. im tired of deleting  photos from the message as soon as i read or sent a photo text. is there an option in the phone or an app that will mass delete embedded photos within all texts. either iphone or mac app would work... or a script... anything! i would even be happy with selecting all phones to delete across all messages the way the camera roll allows you to delete. its seems like an obvious option.
    thanks

Open the Settings app > Notifications > Messages. Scroll down adn turn OFF "View In Lock Screen". You may want to consider setting Alert style to none, but this will not impact what happens when the screen is locked.

  • Mass upload of photo in Archive link

    Hi.
We have to do a mass-upload of photos in the Archivelink (OAAD).
Any standard program to do this, or any other clues anyone please?
    Thanks in adv.

    Hi,
just write a report and combine the function modules:
SCMS_UPLOAD for uploading from a shared backend path
SCMS_DOC_CREATE for storage of a binary table in a content repository (the ID of the content repository must be ArchiveLink compliant meaning a two letters ID).
ARCHIV_CONNECTION_INSERT to write the connection in the ArchiveLink table. Here, you must know your relevant business object (SAP_OBJECT) your doctype (AR_OBJECT) and your OBJECT_ID.
I assume that you need this for HR so here your SAP_OBJECT is PREL and your AR_OBJECT should be HRICOLFOTO
Now, you report must loop over the files and execute the upper function modules.
I hope that helps a bit
    Best regards
    Torsten

I am looking for software to store photos with.  I am not a fancy photographer, and really am just looking for the digital version of a photo album. iPhoto is not cutting it, mainly because it does not back up and restore easily on an external HD.

That's how Time Machine and iPhoto now work.  Restore the library to one of the external HDs, check it for the photos you want, export them to the boot drive and delete the restored library.
If you know the file name of the photo you're looking for you can search for them in the TM backup using Find Any File.
My workflow allows me to do that:
1 - upload new photos to a folder on the Desktop.
2 - name the folder to represent the contents and date: 01/03/10-Toads Bday
3 - use a file renaming app to sequentially rename the photos in the folder to: 2010-01-03-Toads Bday-001.JPG,  -002,JPG, -003.JPG,  etc.
4 - import the folder into iPhoto creating an Event with the same title as the folder.
Now I can search for those file by file name with any app of my choosing.

  • How do I delete large quantities of photos from iPad?

I used the camera adapter to input the photos as a backup device on vacation. Now I want to get rid of them. Deleting 2000+ photos one at a time will be painful. Does anyone have an easier way?

If you have a Mac you can delete photos en masse from the iPad's Camera Roll without importing them with the free Apple app Image Capture. Image Capture is in the Applications folder of every Mac.
If you have a PC, I am not familiar with a similar app.

  • Working on iPad2, I can create new albums from digital camera imports in Photos; however, when the album is automatically imported into iPhoto, it has lost its custom photo or ding and replaced it with a chronological order. How do I reorder them?

Is there a way to preserve the album order and format when it moves from Photos to iPhoto for easy export sharing or advanced sideshow treatments? Can I create the albums on the iPad in iPhoto and format with custom photo ordering? Or do I have to carry and work in Mac?

This is normal and is how Apple handles photos.
    There are NOT duplicate photos.
Just as a song is in your itunes library and you can access that exact same song from a playlist,  all  photos synced to iphone are in the photo library and those exact same photos (NOT duplicates) can be accessed from the individual albums.
It is working exactly as it should.

  • Mass Deletion of Photos Causes iPhoto '09 to Crash

I have about 75,000 pictures. Yeah, waiting on Faces was fun...
Anyway, I decided to break up my library into two libraries.
When I try to delete about 35,000 photos out of the duplicated library, iPhoto works REALLY hard for about an hour, then the processors (iStat menu) just show idle activity. iPhoto stays exactly as it was, but is neither using the processors or HD.
I force quit and then reopen it. The photos are still in the Trash. Nothing seems to have been done.
I've rebuilt everything on iPhoto startup (except the nice 'From Backup' option).
I've been dwindling it down to see what amount of photos doesn't cause iPhoto to anuerize (yes, I made it verb). So far, deleting 5,544 will still cause the freeze.
Any suggestions other than deleting 100 at a time or keeping it all in one library? It should have taken 15 minutes at the most to get both libraries up and running, not a day-and-counting!
    Anyway, thanks in advance.

it currently has some functionality with '09 but can not move photos - from the IPLM update page
    iPhoto ‘09 initial compatibility report
Posted on January 27, 2009 by Brian Webster
Well, I’ve had a chance to try out iPhoto ‘09 for a couple hours now, and here are the notes I have so far regarding compatibility with iPhoto Library Manager:
Viewing and switching between existing libraries works fine. iPhoto will prompt you to upgrade your library to the new version when you first open a particular library. Note that after you upgrade a library, you will no longer be able to open it in earlier versions of iPhoto.
New libraries created using the current version of iPhoto Library Manager won’t work the first time you open them in iPhoto. For now, hold down the option key while opening iPhoto and use its interface to create a new library if you need to create one. You can then use the “Add Library” button in iPhoto Library Manager to add the library to iPLM’s library list, after which you can use the library normally. This will be fixed in the upcoming iPLM update.
As expected, advanced functions such as copying albums between libraries and merging do not work and will produce an error message. Rebuilding a library will also not work, although the “Extract Photos” function should still work OK. Trying to use these features won’t result in any harm, they just won’t work. Again, these issues will be fixed in the upcoming iPLM update.
iPod Folders appear to work with no problems with iPhoto ‘09
So, that’s what I have for now, I’ll be continuing to test things out and will post any updates on this page. I’ll then be starting work on updating iPLM to fix any of the issues that come up with iPhoto ‘09. That will be a free update for all users, so if you have purchased or plan on purchasing a copy of iPLM, you will be able to update for free when it is available.

  • Mass scan of photos

I have a ton (read at least 1250+) of photos that I want to import into iPhoto via a scanner. I'm just curious is any one has dealt with this type of situation. Has anyone used a scanner with an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) like the Fujitsu S300M with photos? Does it work well? I have a flat panel scanner but it takes forever to import them because of positioning the photos.

    Jim:
I can't comment on ADF scanners but my Canon scanner has software that will automatically crop multiple items placed on the scanner and save each as an individual file. What scanner do you have?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Limited quantities of Photos library images & videos

A big drawback I have discovered when trying to access your new Photos library in iMovie is that if your are optimizing your hard drive space, iMovie will only show you pictures and videos that are actually on your hard drive. Put another way, it doesn't seem to pull any content from iCloud to use in iMovie projects. You have to manually download any media (in the Photos app or otherwise) you want to use before you can use it in iMovie or see it in your Photos Library section in the iMovie 'Libraries' sidebar.  This was a little confusing to me at first, so hopefully this helps someone, and brings this issue to Apple's attention.

Interesting.  When using media from the library of another application like iTunes, iPhoto etc. iMovie links to that library and does not make a copy.  This would be a problem for items in the cloud since the access time would probably be too slow for iMovie.  However it could make a local copy but apparently it does not.
Please note that this a user's forum.  I you want to raise an issue with Apple use this link:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Want to make digital mats for my photos

I would like to produce simple, classical double mats (black on the bottom, beveled white on top) for my photographs. The existing s/w I've seen either produces rough-edged artistic borders or simulates actual frames. I've done searchs on both this site and on Google and have not found what I'm looking for.
I'm using both LR3.3 and CS5 on Windows 7. Are there any recent instructions or tutorials you can me point to? I assume this can me done in CS5 but I don't know where to start.
    Regards,
    Don

    Don:
There is another solution you might want to look into. It's a program called QuickMats4. I have been using it for several years and it is user friendly, fast, and very flexible in what it can do. It is published by John Hartman and you can preview it at his web site www.jhartman.com.
This program works as a series of actions within photoshop. I have used it with both CS4 and CS5.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mass photo employee upload

    Hi all,
I got requiremet to mass upload employee photos from UNIX server to Documentum via sap archive link.
To do this, I am using these function modules:
SCMS_UPLOAD : to upload photos from application server and stored it in one internal table ( which is in binary format )
ALINK_DOCUMENTS_CREATE_DIALOG : results the docid and repository id ( throught this all documentids got stored in
    content repository server)
SCMS_DOC_CREATE : used to store all documents in Content repository server id.
ARCHIV_CONNECTION_INSERT : establishes the conenction between repository and sap object
As far as I know , regarding first and second function modules (SCMS_UPLOAD and ALINK_DOCUMENTS_CREATE_DIALOG)  which are used for same purpose ( i.e., to upload only the difference is popup window for second function module .So which one should I have to use among them.
Which function module should I have to use to store all documents in Content repository server?after using first or secod function module, here I used 'SCMS_DOC_CREATE'.Is this correct?
Could you please guide me whether the above mentioned function modules sequence are correct or not for my requirement or should I have to use some other function modules?
Thanks in advance for your helpful answers

To perform a mass document upload and link, a program was developed.
This program works independent from the business object and is able to:
    -  look for document in a file directory (frontend or backend)
    -  store them into the content repository customized
    -  creates a link to a named business object identified with a key
which gets it from the file name of the document.
This program is called ZOA_UPLOAD_AND_LINK and you can find more
information on this program in the note 685520.
