Dilemma as to HP Z820 Workstation System BIOS version 3.88 Update

On HP Drivers & software Support page, URL: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5225043&swItemId=wk_149650_1&swEnvOid=4059#tab2 it is stated that the latest v. 3.88 BIOS update for Z820 will display an error message and fail to boot if Management Engine firmware is not the right version for the processor. This statement poses a real dilemma in my case: My Z820 is one of the first of its kind, dating back to mid 2012. It incorporates the original version of Intel Xeon processors E5-2670. It arrived originally installed with Intel ME firmware version 7.1.21.1134 and Boot Block Date 12/28/2011. After 2 years of relatively safe operation, the Z820 failed, and HP On-Site support replaced its motherboard with a brand new one: Its Boot Block Date is 03/06/2013 with Intel ME firmware version 8.1.52.1496. However, the same original pair of Intel Xeon processors E5-2670 remained and are still running safely in position on the new motherboard. They did not fail so they were not replaced. So now, if I update BIOS to v. 3.88, it may detect the "unsupported combination of processor and Management Engine firmware" and prevent system boot... Should I update BIOS? At present it is v.3.87. Please advise.

You had an original type motherboard and original type processors. The newer (HP calles them Revision 1) type motherboards with the later boot block date did not lose their ability to run the original type processors, as you have experienced. Those can run all the older approved processors and also the newer listed processors in the QuickSpecs. The "unsupported configuration" is running the newer type processors with the older type IME firmware in place. I have updated all of our Z620s to the 3.88 version of BIOS, and we have both original and revision 1 type motherboards (with both the original and newer type of processors in our revision 1 type motherboards) with zero problems. Update of the IME firmware, if you wish, requires fiddling, but has never failed me either. That, of course, is different from updating the IME software. I always update BIOS from within BIOS now... unpack the 3.88 SP for the BIOS updater and harvest the .bin file from the DOS folder that gets placed on the root level of C drive along with the other parts. You only need that .bin file. Place that on a thumb drive, top level, and boot into F10 with that inserted ahead of power up... then you can navigate to the USB stick for the BIOS update. It is safer to do these BIOS updates when not booted into Windows, in my opinion.

Hi farai, welcome to the HP Forums. If your computer appears to be powering on, but you cannot see the screen it may be a recoverable situation.
This document will help you diagnose the issue, it looks like you have already done Step 1 (hard reset):
Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8)
If you get to Step 3, the options listed won't work since you indicated you cannot get into your BIOS. In place of Step 3 in that document, you can try to restore your BIOS using this method: Restoring the BIOS
If you get to the end, it says to call HP. If so, it is most likely a hardware issue and you should call support for more options: HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.

  • How to determine if my system Bios is 786G1?

I just received a HP dc7900 convertable minitower without an operating system and before I install the O/S I want to update to the latest BIOS and then install the latest Intel Management Software.
The latest Bios listed says to make sure that you have the 786G1 bios [HP Compaq Business Desktop System BIOS (786G1 BIOS)]
I currently have Bios version 1.16 installed and need to update it.  How can I be sure that my system has the 786G1 bios?
Thank you for your help in advance...

You should be able to locate the BIOS information on one of the informational screens in the BIOS. However, if you download the BIOS update and go to flash the BIOS, the flash routine should tell you (before it flashes the BIOS) whether or not the update is correct for the BIOS installed on your computer.

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 Laptop System Bios recovery problem

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario CQ57 that has developed a BIOS problem.
I am unsure if it had had a BIOS update through HP Support Assistant or if it just decided to start for no reason but it now intermittently decides to recover the System BIOS at start up.
It is all very random. It may not do it for a while - working fine every time it is switched on - but then just decides to go into this recovery. Sometimes the recovery sorts it first time, sometimes it has to go through the recovery mode several times before it sorts it out. Once sorted, Windows and the laptop work fine.
I have tried to remedy it by installing BIOS updates. There are 4 available on the HP website. I have installed all four at various points - sometimes they install, sometimes they fail. Sometimes the recovery mode kicks in straight after - usually after a fail which makes sense. Other times it will work OK for many start ups and then just go back to it's old tricks.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello rmaiden,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Compaq Presario CQ57-212NR gives you an error after running the system recovery.
Can you tell me if this error loads within Windows or if it prevents you from starting up.
I would suggest you acquire an ISO image of Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD. Use this to install Windows and then run the recovery after. This should remedy the problem.

  • System bios

Everytime my computer goes into sleep mode it does not restart. Sometimes I get a black screen, other times I get a blue screen with a data_kernel_error. Either way the only way to restart my computer is forcing a shutdown by holding the power button down and restarting. I believe it may be linked to a BIOS update that is needed....?
I have a HP Zbook 14, windows 8.1 pro and current version of BIOS is L71 Ver 01.20. The update is Ver 01.30A.
However when trying to install the BIOS update I get the error 'HP BIOS update and recovery has stopped working.'
I am therefore unable to install. Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi,
So the system shut down is normal for BIOS update and if I can restart the computer, therefore assuming the update worked.
I checked HP System Diagnostics the BIOS test still returns with an error message "The System BIOS update failed. Failed reading BIOS image file".
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks again,

  • HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processor)

    Hello,
I was looking through my updates and everything to make sure my computer is working to it's fullest. I noticed there was a recommended update that I should follow through with which is the HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processor), and I've download it and installed it, then afterwards, my computer told me that I had to restart it, which I did. I agreed to update it but it keeps popping up in the suggested updates and I've tried multiple times to do it. It never seems to work!
    Please help.

Here is a direct link to the F.36 BIOS which is the latest. Have you tried downloading it and manually launching it rather than using the HP Update utitlity?

Make sure you have a charged battery and AC plugged in. Let us know what happens.
You might also try going into the BIOS (F10) as you power up and check the existing BIOS version. You may already have F.36.

  • System BIOS CACHEABLE - enabled or disabled?

The manual from my MSI Neo2 Platinum says that SYSTEM BIOS CACHEABLE should be set to ENABLED to improve performance...
I always had this DISABLED on every system I had...
What does it do and would enabling it improve performance? Cause any problems?

    Quote
    System BIOS Cacheable
    Common Options : Enabled, Disabled
    Quick Review
Enabling this feature allows the caching of the motherboard BIOS ROM from F0000h to FFFFFh by the processor's Level 2 cache. This greatly speeds up accesses to the BIOS.
However, this does not translate into better system performance because modern operating systems like Microsoft Windows XP do not need to communicate with the hardware via the BIOS. Current operating systems make use of drivers to access the hardware directly.
Therefore, it would be a waste of the Level 2 cache's bandwidth if the motherboard BIOS was cached instead of data that are more critical to the system's performance.
In addition, if any errant program writes into this memory area, it will result in a system crash. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you disable this feature for better system performance.
    Reference
What do you, got it one Google try...
I have it disabled too, and it is highly recommended to disable it before BIOS flashing!

  • System BIOS update failed

    Hello,
I need your help.  I ran HP System Diagnostics following recent BSOD incidents (about 3) on my Pavilion dv6.  I ran all the tests successfully except Memory Test as it takes 6 hours (approximately).
Interestingly the BIOS test came up with an error message "The System BIOS update failed. Failed reading BIOS image file".  I tried running BIOS driver update from th HP website for my dv6 notebook but I am not sure it worked.  During the update the computer would shut down - is that normal?
What can I do to check that my BIOS from 25 January 2013 is the current version? More importantly prevent future BSOD appearing.  I have plenty of memory, so rather intrigued.  Ran Norton and Microsoft Security and no viruses etc.
    Hope you can help.
    Many thanks,
