Dilemma with Windows software on a Mac

Here is my situation...I am a part-time student taking an online class this summer. The class I am taking requires the use of a CD, but is not Mac compatible. I have heard something about a program that can be installed on Mac for this sort of thing. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Jace K.

My brother has mentioned to me about the Virtual PC
program, which I may end up investing in. My only
concern is, what if it doesn't work. I need something
that will actually let me "install" this CD-ROM
program onto the computer in order for me to be able
to use it. Would that be possible with either of the
programs you mentioned?
Yes.
Though I would check the system requirements of Virtual PC.
To use Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7, users need the following:
System Requirements
Hardware: A 700 MHz native* PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
Operating system: Mac OS X Version 10.2.8; Mac OS X Version 10.3; Mac OS X Version 10.4.1 or later.
Free Hard Disk Space: 3 GB
RAM: 512 MB
Display: 1024 x 768 resolution monitor displaying thousands of colors
Storage: CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing a network)
Peripherals: Mouse or compatible pointing device
You will need 512MB of RAM minimum.
Does the CD-ROM have video or similar, as this is liable not work on an iBook running VIrtual PC as Virtual PC is too slow.

  • How to convert an ipod with Windows software installed to Mac operation

I have a 20MB ipod which has windows software on it. It is very hard to load songs onto as I can only see the ICON on the desktop and not in itunes and this way they don't seem to properly mount! I have a 12" ibook that I connect it to. I can't seem to follow how one is supposed to wipe the Windows OS (or whatever) off the ipod and install the Mac one ?!?!? Am I trying to do the impossible? A step-by-step answer would be soooooo appreciated.
    12" ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Information on the iPod not appearing in iTunes is available in this article. To reformat the iPod for Mac, open a new Finder window and click the Applications icon in the sidebar; from here, open Utilities and then iPod Software Updater. Locate the most recent version of the iPod updater inside, open it, and click the Restore button with the iPod connected. Doing this will change the iPod into the Mac format and erase everything currently on it.

  • Can I use windows software on my mac?

May seem like a silly question, but when I purchased my macbook, I was told that I could reserve a portion of the harddrive to run windows software. I need to run Quickbooks Pro that I have in windows form. How do I load it onto my macbook???

    Ok, several ways.
Apparently, there's a wine-like solution for Mac, so you can run windows software from within Mac OS X. Expect it to be somewhat buggy and imperfect though, and it might not run some software. It's coming out soon as far as I know. I saw in on MacRumors a while ago.
Then there's the Apple solution called Boot Camp. What it does is just allow you to dual boot. It means you will actually be running windows on the machine.
And then a new user favorite, is using machine emulation, it emulates a second machine inside the current machine allowing you to run Windows inside Mac OS X. It's very memory-hungry, though, and somewhat slower usually. Look into Parallels and QEMU.

  • Can I use Remote Desktop to run Windows software from my Mac

Here's what I want to do:
    1) Set up a small office LAN with an Apple Xserve as the file server; clients are mostly iMacs but a few PCs.
    2) There are one or two software apps I need that exist only in the Windows world (such as a good document comparison software like DeltaView).
    3) I want to have one dedicated PC for my one or two essential Windows apps and then run Remote Desktop Connection on my Mac client to launch the Windows app on the PC client and use it to edit or otherwise manipulate a data file stored on the server.
    Is this possible?

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
OK, maybe I'm missing something basic but then why would I ever want to run Windows network in my office? The bugbear about Macs is that there is certain Windows software for which there is no good Mac equivalent. But you are telling me that as long as I have a couple of Windows boxes, I can run my Windows software on them through my Mac, even though the data files are stored on an separate box (an Xserve).
Now, for the $64 question -- is it possible to set up a network in such a way that I could use RDC on my PowerBook in, say, Chicago to run the software installed on the Windows box and in turn to open and manipulate the files stored on the Xserve in my office, halfway across the world in Abu Dhabi? Would this be a particularly difficult configuration?

  • Help with Windows Domain Login on Mac

    Hello Everyone,
We have two Mac Pros at my work running Mac OS 10.5.8 and they are attached to the Windows Server / Domain so when the Mac is turned on you login with your Domain credentials (using Win Server to Authenticate). Now all of this has been working fine since the computers were purchased a year ago, until two days ago that is. I turned on the Mac Pro in the morning and tried to login, and the Mac would freeze and do nothing. I restarted and tried again, using the same credentials I always use, but nothing worked. I called the IT guys and had my windows user account reset thinking that the password was expired, still didn't help, so I asked them to reset the whole account, still didn't help.
At this point I asked a few of my co-workers to login on my Mac using their login info, and they had no problems at all. I decided to dig deeper into this problem and logging in under a "local" Mac account I went into the "Accounts" preferences to check what was going on, to my surprise my Domain account was visible (normally it wasn't unless you were logged in) and under the account it said "sharing only".
I am still trying to figure out why my Domain account was changed from "Admin, Managed" to "Sharing Only"? So I decided that the easy fix here was to use a previously made (and tested) image file which I created when the Mac Pro was first setup and all the software was installed. So after cloning the image to the Mac HD I turned on the Mac and tried to login, again nothing happened. I can login using the local account, and my co-workers can login fine, but my domain login just refuses to work. I have also tired to login on other Macs in the department and I can login just fine on each one, the only Mac that doesn't let me login is my machine.
I have run out of ideas, short of re-installing the entire system from scratch.. which I really don't want to do unless I have to. But if anyone out there has any ideas I would more than welcome them.
    Thanks in advance..

It's probably related to some type of DRM (copy-protection) on the digital copy, and not due to it being any particular type of file format. The DRM scheme probably only works under Windows. And if that is the case, I don't think you will be able to get it to work under Mac OS X, short of running VMware Fusions or Parallels Desktop (or Sun's free VirtualBox) and installing Windows to run under Mac OS X.
Considering the popularity of Macs recently, and higher use of Macs among creative folks, it's pretty stupid for the studio/distributor to make a key feature Windows-only.

  • Working with Windows sharing files on MAC disk

    Hi
I use more often the MAC OS, but i need sometimes to work with windows XP because of 3DStudio.
i'm using Mac disk to save all my files, but since i need to boot in Windows to get more results i can't get acess to the Mac disk! there is any solution? At the moment i'm using parallels!
i want to know if there is any simple way to share files (read and save) when i'm working in windows boot?
    Thanks

*"i want to know if there is any simple way to share files (read and save) when i'm working in windows boot?"*
Install MacDrive on the Windows install or format the drive as FAT.
Otherwise, since this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Parallels or Boot Camp you should really consider posting your question on the Parallels and Boot Camp forums:

  • Problem with Windows media player on MAC

I got a new macbook and installed windows vista. When I wanted to play CDs on windows media player there comes a message"windows media player have aproblem..." and the window closes. I contacted the Microsoft support system and they said that the it is the problem with the mac that the Macbook is not really supporting some of the files and they told me to contact the Apple support and even then they could not solve the problem. I returned the first laptop and got a new Macbook again and even the second macbook has the same problem. Could anmy one tell me why this is happening? If your a Macbook user with windows, did you notice this kind of similar problem? Please do let me know. Thanking you.

If you have the current version of Microsoft Windows Media Player for Mac installed, there is little you can do. The WMPFM is not kept as current as the Windows version (IMO, I think MS hates Apple - and this is intentional).

  • Problems with Windows Media Player for Mac's

Is it safe to download and opperate Windows media player for Mac's to view video on the web ?
Anybody has experience with it ? What are possible problems that may be encountered ? Thanks for any input or feedback.

"Is it safe to download and opperate Windows media player"
    Sure, why not?
You should know that's it's discontinued, and no longer developed by Microsoft, and therefore will never be native to Intel Macs. You should look to the free Flip4Mac QuickTime plugin from flip4mac.com

  • Conflict with Windows Media Player for Mac

I´ve installed parallel desktop on my mac (MacBook Pro), then Windows so I can run a PC only program. The conflict is this: When I want to play a video on WMP (for mac), for example: when I receive an email with a video clip to be played and I double click it, Parallel Desktop starts up automaticaly to play it on windows. I´ve right clicked and tried to specify that WMP on my mac should be the one to open videos by default; but it´s not working, or I´m doing something wrong.
    Any wisdom? Thanks in advance.

select a .wmv file and enter command+i. in the resulting popup go to "open with" section, select the default application you want (not a Windows Media player for Mac which is extinct) to use and click "change all". see if it sticks now.

  • Problem with windows formatted iPod on Mac

I have a 20gb 4th gen iPod formatted for Windows. I just received a Mini Mac as a gift and now I want to use the iPod on it. When I connect the iPod and run iTunes it recognizes it and updates and does everything it's supposed to do, but if I try to click on any of the items in the menu on the left (Library, Playlists, etc.) iTunes quits completely and the iPod is ejected. I've tried restoring but that makes it quit, too. I've also tried completely erasing everything from the iPod manually (even the hidden files and folders) but that doesn't reformat it. Any suggestions?
    -C
Mini Mac   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Senuti.
It's a program that transfers music from iPod to iTunes on a Mac.
    As is Music Rescue.
Both of these should work with a Windows formatted iPod because Macs can read and write to FAT32 formatted drives.

  • Software needed to use Windows software on my Mac

    Hi,
I know this is probably a question that has been asked before, but here goes. I need to be able to use some Windows only applications on my iMac. I am thinking Parallels. My question is, do I also need to buy Windows for it to work? I've been to several websites for info but just can't find the answers.  Thanks a million.

I have a Macbook Air and do use Parallels for running Windows. I will just give a brief summary of my experience to hopefully help people decide. In my experience running Parallels or any VM software has some serious drawbacks. For one, you have not only Apple's OS running but then you have a application running in OS X trying to run a full fledge OS of Windows in that. In other words your adding a lot of potential problems. In one word I can say for all of its complexity it does run rather well if you can accept its limitations. Be sure you have enough RAM and consider 4GB a minimum if your also running Lion OS X. Botom line I think BootCamp is not only cheaper but better for running Windows. You already have to buy a full version of Windows (although their are cheats). Plus Bootcamp runs Windows natively so your not dealing with all the issues of a virtual machine. I tend to agree with some that if you need to use Windows enough, I probably would consider buying a cheap PC for that. I ran Windows on Parallels for a while but ended up adopting my wifes old PC laptop when she bought herself a new PC. I've suggested to some to buy a refurb PC laptop or off lease one. Cost of that vs buying Virtual software like Parllels or Fusion and a copy of Windows is most like less. My preference in order. 1. Windows/Bootcamp
    2. Buy cheap Windows PC 3. Use VM software on Mac if you absolutely need both on one machine.

  • Slip streaming SP2 with Windows XP on a mac

Ugh! need to have a step by step method (using a mac) of how to slip stream SP2 (service pack 2) to Windows XP home edition (if possible using Recovery CD's that came with my windows laptop), so I can have a single install disc of Windows XP with SP2 for boot camp to then be able to run windows on my mac mini. All the slip streaming helps avail I've found are doing it using Windows. Can anyone help?

  • A few problems with windows 7 on my mac with boot camp

    1) how do i use all the functions of my mac in the windows os environment? like two finger scrolling, isight, two finger right click, and my speakers?
    2) when i boot up windows the time is totally wrong is there any way i can keep this from happening everytime i start windows?
ive read that i should install the drivers that are on the OS X disk but when i put that in it just spits it back out without recognizing it, also i cant right click so keep that in mind.

To right-click, just use two fingers instead of one.  I'd like to know how to do two-finger scrolling, too.
