Dim display -NOT a firmware issue

Hi. We want to give our old lime green slot loading imac to a friend's child. I updated the firmware a couple of years ago when I loaded Jaguar onto the computer. Yesterday I did an erase and reinstall of Jaguar. Everything was fine until I installed the 10.2 updates to bring it to 10.2.8. The screen stays black at startup. I was able to get a dim screen by using the sleep/wake trick, but the screen is still not as bright as it was before the erase or even after the basic Jaguar install. I did doublecheck the profiler and is shows firmware version 4.1.9f
Any ideas? Is it just dying?

This is only a suggestion, as this may or may not help, but you might want to try resetting the PRAM. Some display and video settings are held in the PRAM settings and this may help.....though I am not sure if this is your problem. After resetting PRAM you will have to reset date and time etc. I believe.

At least that should guarantee that the settings will be reset to default.
Worth a shot, not guaranteeing results, unless someone else has an idea of what to try next....

External Drive won't init over 128GB, Not FW firmware issue

This one is killing me:
I got a Maxtor 6L 300R0 drive the other day and hooked it up to my Dual 1GHZ MDD via a FW enclosure to init it - I am planning on migrating all my data from 3 internals over to 1 drive. The enclosure can handle drives over 128gb as there was a 200gb drive in it prior to the 300gb maxtor. Disk Utility only shows the drive as having a capacity of 128GB. Tried it in a new USB enclosure that says it can handle drive up to 400GB, same problem. I tried booting with other system drives that I had around: 10.3.8, same problem, 10.4.3, same problem, Original X Install DVD Disk Util, same problem. I did some searching on the forums and decided to return it to swap it out in case it was a drive problem.
I got a replacement drive and was at work, so I just decided to init it on one of the G5's with my USB enclosure. Drive inited fine to ~279.5 GB. I brought it home and hooked everything up. Drive showed up fine as 279.5 GB on my MDD. I switched it over to a FW case to get little better speed on the copy. Drive still showed up as ~279.5 GB. I launched Super Duper and let it do it's thing. As part of the process, I believe that it re-inits the drive. I got up this morning to swap everything out and put the new drive internal, but I had an out of space error on the new drive. I opened it up in the Finder and now it is saying that it is a 128GB capacity drive. I just tried all of the options above: 10.3.8, new user on current 10.4.5, 10.4.3, X Install DVD. Still shows as 128GB drive. Went back to the USB case, tried above options, same problem.
Reset-NVRAM and Reset-All from Open Firmware, same problems.
The only thing that I have not tried is to take the drive back to work and see what it says on the G5. I'd rather not do that on my weekend off.
My G4 MDD is current on OS upgrades, 1.25 GB Ram, Dual 1 GHZ processor. Current drive configuration is a 3 Drive Raid 0 internally.
Is there a way to get in and reset the partition map size with the correct LBA? Or is this not the problem?

Final Update-
Never really determined what the problem on the Mac end was. I mounted the drive in an Ubuntu Linux box. It was showing up as having far less cylinders than it should for the drive geometry. Reset it to specs that I got from the Maxtor site with cfdisk (which I think is just fdisk with a little bit of a user interface), drive then showed up as correct size. I formatted the whole drive for Linux swap then moved it over to the mac. Re-Inited it as HFS+, and everything worked great.
I found some similar posts re: drives getting stuck at 128gb even when moved to an ATA-6 compliant bus/enclosure. This might be one way to get them back to factory spec on the size.

Qosmio F50 very dim display issue

Hi everyone
Recently my Qosmio F50-10z has started suffering a very weird problem. Often the screen goes absolutely dim. I can see a very very faint image if I concentrate very hard. External monitors when connected stay well lit and bright. The most weird bit is that when this happens I have to literally slam the lid shut and open the lid immediately to make the screen light up again.
I know it is either the inverter or the screen cable. My question is how do I find out whether it is the VGA cable or the inverter and where do I buy the part from!

In my opinion its an FL inverter issue since the picture on the external monitor is ok.
The FL inverter controls the display backlight and the issue sounds like FL inverter malfunction.
You can purchase and order all compatible parts from an local ASP.
The authorized service partner would be helpful and could also replace the part.
I would recommend this because notebook disassembling is very tricky.

Auto dimming display/kb not working

I need some help tracking down where this setting is stored. Here is the situation...
I have 2 user accounts on a 2.4 Penryn MBP. When the computer is 1st booted the kb backlight is on and the display is dimmed to the same level regardless of the ambient light levels. When I log into MY account on this machine the levels remain and the light sensors are completely non-responsive even if I cover the speaker grills completely. I have both auto dimming check boxes selected in the display and keyboard system prefs.
Now, if I log into my wife's account on the same machine, everything works just as it did before. Auto-dimming of both the kb and display back to normal.
I have tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, trashing all prefs in my user folder, trashing prefs in the root library folder.
Where are these settings stored? Any ideas on how to reset them?

I really would like to know too where are stored the enable/disable auto-dimming display preferences.
This setting is not scriptable, not programmaticaly accessible (Obj-C), not even stored in any .plist, because I have logged filesystem events and nothing is written to the disk when this setting is changed.
It is really annoying ! I would like to access this setting by applescript for exemple. The only way to change it is by opening the System Preferences, then de Displays panel, then using the checkbox.
Does someone have any clue on this?

Problem with L193pC display: not coming on intermitently

Hi,
I have a problem with my new L193pC ThinkVision display. My setup is this:
- Lenovo laptop 3000 N200 0769-A8U with Windows XP and all the latest updates installed
- Lenovo L193pC display hooked up to the laptop's analog output
This is a work environment. I use this display in a dual screen setup along with the laptop's display. I Hibernate and take home my laptop every night, connect it back and resume from hibernation to the display every morning. Sometimes the L193 simply won't come on. The green power led is on but the dispaly itself is off. More problematic: when this problem occurs, turning off the display using the power button does not work!!!! It simply won't turn off. Pressing the power button has no effect. The only solution to this problem is to unplug the power to the display and plug it back in!!!! Not very nice.
If this information has any value: this morning when it happened I had used my laptop at home last night and the settings where for single display, the laptop's hi-res mode, on power up. Then I switched to my dual screen setup using the Fn-F7 presentation director software and selected my dual screen setup.
Is this the right place to report this problem? What other step should I take to get this problem resolved? Are there any firmware upgrade for these display?

Last night's flashlight test, couldn't see anything, so not a backlight issue.
Inspected and re-seated the video connector once more, no cable injuries to report.
Was still having issues getting the display to power on.
So I booted into recovery, if I closed the screen at first power up and then reopened it at the recovery language window, the internal display would start working.
Lightbulb moment! Some sort of weird EFI + OS trigger was failing.
Digging deeper, I found that the hard drive was set up as an encrypted partition and I think that this was the primary source of the issue.
So now I am decrypting so that I can image the disk and re-install a clean unencrypted Yosemite.

Something to add to the troubleshooting kb, a messed up encrypted disk can affect/prevent the powerup of the screen.

Heat, Fan, and dimming display questions

I have a hot running MacBook Pro. I've had the unit returned for service and only one of my four issues was resolved. The unit is going back again for service.
I seemed to irritate the last tech support person by asking questions about the heat issues. Maybe some people here can help answer the question that changed his tone for the worse during the remainder of the support call.
Can you easily hear the fan(s) when they operate or do you have to put your ear real close to the laptop to hear the fan(s) operate?
I asked because I couldn't tell you what a fan sounds like on this machine. I'm on my second motherboard and I cannot feel any air flow from all those vents (or anywhere else for that matter) along the back of the laptop near the display hinge.
Has anyone found a correlation between a dimming display and heat? What happens is the display dims the equivelent of bringing down the brightness down three levels and after a few seconds it brightens back up.
The laptop is going in for a second repair for the following reason:

Hello I just wanted to give you some insight on the screen dimming. If you have not unchecked the box at the bottom of the display pane is system prefs the display will dim when ever it scences a lower light situation. I have attached a picture. HERE

I understand the display on your Chromebook is dim but works fine via HDMI.
Try performing a hard reset on your Chromebook by pressing Refresh+Power.
If that doesnt help try Performing a System Recovery on Your HP Chromebook (Chrome OS).

got my new HP 7520. Want to upgrade the firmware.
DOwnloaded the software, install....and then it says:
Connect the printer, make sure that the printer is connected, no fault on display not in use, no paper in it....etc.
And then....I want to upgrade.....and what do I get?
A message: found the problem.
1: check is the pc is connected to the printer (yes it is)
Printer is turned on (yes it is)
no fault message (for example paper fault, the lid is open)
2: Solve any issues
3: Try again.
15 years ago I bought my first printer. After this printer I never bought a HP printer again. Because there were always issues.

I have now send an email to the dutch HP office. No answer tomorrow and Tuesday, I will destroy the printer and deliver it at HP myself. Put the whole story on facebook. Perhaps this will help all the others wit answers. I really dont care anymore. HP even has software which I should install also. But if it keeps hanging on 10%, I have to cancel it, and then, according to HP, I will get the message: Do you trust this software and by pressing yes, the software continues to install. OMG!!! Make good software! I dont get this message when I cancel the installation?

I really dislike people who always respond when they are frustrated. But now I do understand them!
No respond here or from Holland, it will means I will be the idiot of the year, but believe me, people will see the film and if they need to choose between HP and a different brand....they will not choose HP.
And they will believe my film. I will film the installation of the printers, and then film the update, film how the HP website works etc etc.
Sorry for those who work their ass off! I really do appreciate you help, but its all about management, who think they know it best. Start with the guy who invented this website and do a drugtest.

Quality of new build of HP Pavilion 23xi / firmware issue?

Hi. I bough one HP Pavilion 23xi one year ago and I was very impressed with the image quality. So I bought one recently, but I noticed a difference between them: when viewed from above or side, this latest one has light leaks and a not-so-uniform display of colors, which get washed out more quickly when viewed from other angles. This does not happen with the first one, and it's independant of operating system (tried on Windows 8.1 64bit and OSX Yosemite.
Is it a build quality or firmware issue?

Also the OSD is different between monitors - how can I update firmware RIM111 to RIM232 ?

I have read your post on how the quality of your new monitor shows light leaks and not-so-uniform display of colors from different viewing angles. I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer

Dim display - CQ40

Hi everyone.
First, I want to express my disappointment. Argentina (I am not from USA) IS NOT in the list of available countries in the registration process. That's really bad and insulting. The whole planet is there, except we don't.
Having said that, I have a CQ 40 that starts with the classic dim display problem. Only when starts, a few seconds looks ok, the dim. The same thing, when close de lid, and open again.
So replaced the inverter with a new one after try with 2 displays (the one from the notebook and another one, using the inverter with the signal from the notebook) same thing.
So started to see the magnetic lid switch. When pass over a magnet near, the screen come back. After doing that several times the image stay and the display work flawless until shut down the computer. Also, with the rule of "sleeps when lid close" could probe that isn't the lid switch that causes the problem, because when the display goes dim, it ins't go to sleep mode. But when make work the switch with de magnet, goes to sleep like it should do.
The last thing is a backlight issue, a bad lamp or bad wires that works when goes ON several times maybe?

Please try the troubleshooting steps shown below to resolve the issue:
1. Please Press Fn + F7 or Fn + F10 Keys on the Notebook Keyboard to increase the Brightness
2. Disable ambient light sensor in BIOS if its available
3. Update the latest BIOS, Chipset and Video Drivers
4. If the display works fine on External Desktop Monitor, Reseat Display Connector to Motherboard
[If you are comfortable]
5. Replace the Display Panel
Note: If external monitor has dim display we need to re-install the operating system and if that doesn't resolve the issue we need to replace system board & Display Panel

Dim display.. Inverter or new display ?

Hello everyone. My display suddenly went dim three days ago, but i could see the icons, when i used a flashlight to the dim display. Suddenly, it worked fine fews hours later, and there was no problem in the weekend, but suddenly the problem repeated today in the morning, and there was suddenly light on the display again after few hours, but now, it went dim again.
I don't really know the reason to this problem, because im not sure of the problem comes from the inverter or the LCD backlight.
