Dim Display

Ok, I've found several other posts very similar to this, but none of the suggestions in them have worked. I have an iBook G4, and turning it on today I found I can barely see the screen. At first I thought it was just black, but if I look really hard, I can see that everything's there. So I've tried adjusting the display. I've tried reset the nvram. I've tried running it on battery, AC, both... nothing works. It turns on fine, and it's charging normally, I just can't see anything. Adjusting the brightness doesn't have any effect either. I turn it all the way down or up and it just stays the same. Any other suggestions that I can try would be great.

Jay,
One interesting thing was that one of the cords the tech gave me back had a date on it and it was 4-12-2007.
Wait! You're right that doesn't make sense. Is that on the LVDS or the inverter/reed cable? Does it look used? especially at the hinge point?
I read one of your posts from a different thread and it says something about how changing out an inverter board would fix it because it supplys the power to the backlight.
Well inverters do fail but mostly the cables fail.
Do backlights just burn out?
Dunno never seen one but it's sure possible.
It's also possible that the driver on the logic board got burned out but if it was working at a shallow angle that doesn't sound right.
Those guys that worked on your iBook shouldn't have charged you for putting in parts that didn't fix the problem. Especially if they were replacing good parts.

• S405 dim display

Hi folks. Bought laptop new with windows 8 for use in a school district
I don't have the resources to support 8 right now, so I went to load windows 7.
Windows 8 display was bright
The setup when loading windows 7 was bright as well. All going ok.
But, after loading the AMD chipset drivers that are all bundled together, the display is half a bright as it was.
All settings I can find for brightness are maxed: In the power settings, the OSD keyboard setting (F12), the AMD display interface....
Too bad too, as there are many reviews of this latop that indicate a dim display and I'm sure that folks are getting turned away by that. After running a fresh install I know that the display and hardware are fine. It's the driver that's broken. PLEASE can Lenovo or AMD get a fix for this? It's almost unusable it's so dim.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I had to reload Windows 8 from a flash drive since I couldn't get any Windows 7 displays drivers to function correctly. For Windows 8, the drivers on the website were in a self-extracting executable that didn't work properly (I don't know if they've fixed them now), and then for a while they took them down (I don't know if they're back up). At the time when I reimaged the system, I had to download the Windows 8 drivers from the Chinese site, and they worked correctly for Windows 8. This particular laptop was a gift, so I don't have it anymore. Just happy I could get it working again with Windows 8.
After I was having so much trouble with Windows 7, I called Lenovo support to alert them of their drivers not functioning. I was hung up on. I'm not happy with Lenovo support, and if I didn't do I.T. for a living, I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to get working Windows 8 drivers.

• Heat, Fan, and dimming display questions

I have a hot running MacBook Pro. I've had the unit returned for service and only one of my four issues was resolved. The unit is going back again for service.
I seemed to irritate the last tech support person by asking questions about the heat issues. Maybe some people here can help answer the question that changed his tone for the worse during the remainder of the support call.
Can you easily hear the fan(s) when they operate or do you have to put your ear real close to the laptop to hear the fan(s) operate?
I asked because I couldn't tell you what a fan sounds like on this machine. I'm on my second motherboard and I cannot feel any air flow from all those vents (or anywhere else for that matter) along the back of the laptop near the display hinge.
Has anyone found a correlation between a dimming display and heat? What happens is the display dims the equivelent of bringing down the brightness down three levels and after a few seconds it brightens back up.
The laptop is going in for a second repair for the following reason:
"Problem Description: Customer sensory issues - Temperature perception: CPU/Unit"

Hello I just wanted to give you some insight on the screen dimming. If you have not unchecked the box at the bottom of the display pane is system prefs the display will dim when ever it scences a lower light situation. I have attached a picture. HERE

• Ipod w/ dim display

My iPod 3rd gen. has a very dim display. Adjust the dimmer setting has no effect.

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd
If you still have the the problem then an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

• T61 dim display

Dim display, external video ok, lcd comes on when lid is shut & opened then goes dim. I have seen this problem on older laptops with a stuck lid closure switch ... can't find one on this laptop though ... HELP!??

I recently started having the same problem on my three-year old T61. The screen is legible, but definitely dimmer than it used to be. I'm happy to replace something, if I know what the problem is. Sounds like you have already done all the things I would have done. Did you also replace the backlight?

hi, ive got a issue with a dim display on my hp 14 chromebook 14-C001SA, the output to my tv via hdmi is fine, ive changed the screen and the ram and still the same issue, any ideas im so confused to what the problem is, any help would be much appreciated, many thanks

Hey @teddyredhead ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the display on your Chromebook is dim but works fine via HDMI.
Try performing a hard reset on your Chromebook by pressing Refresh+Power.
If that doesnt help try Performing a System Recovery on Your HP Chromebook (Chrome OS).
If neither of those help I would suggest contacting HP Phone Support for service options as the inverter or motherboard may be having an issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • Dimming display

I am having a problem with my G5 iMac.
I allow my display to sleep after 5 minutes and do not have it set to "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep."
Unfortunately, the display dims after about 5 minutes of use (5 minutes after I wake the display up).
Right before it dims, it gets brighter twice (even though I operate at maximum brightness), then it dims and I cannot increase the brightness.
The only way to get the screen to come back to full brightness is to let it go to sleep.
I tried a Archive and Install a while back in hopes of fixing this problem, but it persists.
Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Yes, read your user manual.
The screen is designed to dim in different lighting conditions. If you don't want it to do that, go to your system preferences and change it.
System Preferences>Displays>Automatically dim display as ambient light changes

• Auto dimming display/kb not working

I need some help tracking down where this setting is stored. Here is the situation...
I have 2 user accounts on a 2.4 Penryn MBP. When the computer is 1st booted the kb backlight is on and the display is dimmed to the same level regardless of the ambient light levels. When I log into MY account on this machine the levels remain and the light sensors are completely non-responsive even if I cover the speaker grills completely. I have both auto dimming check boxes selected in the display and keyboard system prefs.
Now, if I log into my wife's account on the same machine, everything works just as it did before. Auto-dimming of both the kb and display back to normal.
I have tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, trashing all prefs in my user folder, trashing prefs in the root library folder.
Where are these settings stored? Any ideas on how to reset them?

I really would like to know too where are stored the enable/disable auto-dimming display preferences.
This setting is not scriptable, not programmaticaly accessible (Obj-C), not even stored in any .plist, because I have logged filesystem events and nothing is written to the disk when this setting is changed.
It is really annoying ! I would like to access this setting by applescript for exemple. The only way to change it is by opening the System Preferences, then de Displays panel, then using the checkbox.
Does someone have any clue on this?

• Dim display - CQ40

Hi everyone.
First, I want to express my disappointment. Argentina (I am not from USA) IS NOT in the list of available countries in the registration process. That's really bad and insulting. The whole planet is there, except we don't.
Having said that, I have a CQ 40 that starts with the classic dim display problem. Only when starts, a few seconds looks ok, the dim. The same thing, when close de lid, and open again.
So replaced the inverter with a new one after try with 2 displays (the one from the notebook and another one, using the inverter with the signal from the notebook) same thing.
So started to see the magnetic lid switch. When pass over a magnet near, the screen come back. After doing that several times the image stay and the display work flawless until shut down the computer. Also, with the rule of "sleeps when lid close" could probe that isn't the lid switch that causes the problem, because when the display goes dim, it ins't go to sleep mode. But when make work the switch with de magnet, goes to sleep like it should do.
The last thing is a backlight issue, a bad lamp or bad wires that works when goes ON several times maybe?
Thak you in advance for the replies.

Please try the troubleshooting steps shown below to resolve the issue:
1. Please Press Fn + F7 or Fn + F10 Keys on the Notebook Keyboard to increase the Brightness
2. Disable ambient light sensor in BIOS if its available
3. Update the latest BIOS, Chipset and Video Drivers
4. If the display works fine on External Desktop Monitor, Reseat Display Connector to Motherboard
[If you are comfortable]
5. Replace the Display Panel
Note: If external monitor has dim display we need to re-install the operating system and if that doesn't resolve the issue we need to replace system board & Display Panel

• Dim Display key takes 2 taps

I have just started noticing a strange behavior in my MBP (early 2009, just before built-in batteries on 15 inch).
The Dim Display key now takes 2 taps to work. For instance, tapping it once brings up the Brightness meter, but does not change the brightness. A second quick tap dims the screen 1 level. A third tap does nothing (assuming the brightness meter is already up), a fourth tap dims the display another level.
Thoughts?

Just happens when the room is very dark, apparently a feature for some reason.

• Dim display.. Inverter or new display ?

Hello everyone. My display suddenly went dim three days ago, but i could see the icons, when i used a flashlight to the dim display. Suddenly, it worked fine fews hours later, and there was no problem in the weekend, but suddenly the problem repeated today in the morning, and there was suddenly light on the display again after few hours, but now, it went dim again.
I don't really know the reason to this problem, because im not sure of the problem comes from the inverter or the LCD backlight.
Thanks in advance
Oesen

Hi, Oesen
Does this happen both when plugged into AC and running off of the battery? Also, what is your machine type and model and what operating system are you running?
Thanks in advance,
Adam

• Dim Display feature not working properly

When I first got my 8330 a few days ago, the display dimming feature worked just fine. Now, with Backlight Brightness set to 100 and Backlight Timeout set to 30 seconds, when I toggle "Automatically Dim Backlight" to ON, the display dims as soon as I save the configuration. It stays dimmed continuously from that point on. To get back to normal I have to toggle the "Automatically Dim Backlight" to OFF, but then it just stays on full brightness for the 30 seconds.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I never thought of that. Ithink that should work, I'll let you know if theres anyproblems.

Along a similar line of thought why is it that when I insert aUDA using a load rule, and the option for 'Allow UDA Changes' ischecked in dDimension Build Settings, why does it not overwrite theprevious UDA, instead it creates duplicates, or three or fourcopies of the UDA I'm trying to load. However if I uncheck"Allow UDA Changes" and have "Allow PropertyChanges" it will overwrite the UDA? Is that a known bugin the system?

• Dimming Display Brightness to Zero

Hello All,
I have been having a problem with the display brightness adjustment for a long time. Basically, the display of my 17" 1GHz G4 cannot be dimmed to black. From the System Preferences the display brightness can be lowered with the slider. In the final third however dragging the slider further to the left not only does not reduce the brightness it actually slightly increase it, and the display start to flicker.
Any ideas what could be the cause?

That model doesn't support dimming the display brightness to zero, except through Energy Saver (which may not work with all third party USB devices), or a screen saver that has a picture that shows nothing but black. Some third party hacks dim the display, but they are not necessarily that reliable.
Only Apple's notebook displays dim to full black.

• T400 and T61 Dim Display problem....

Good day,
I am having extremely strange problem, and would apreciate any help. I also experiencing this exact problem with a T61 laptop.
The display screen is extremely dim. I have changed the LCD Panel, LCD Cable, Inverter Card as well as the Systemboard. And I am still experiencing the same problem, not only for the T400, but also for the T61.....
If anyone has any solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards,
Uttam A. Dookhran

I recently started having the same problem on my three-year old T61. The screen is legible, but definitely dimmer than it used to be. I'm happy to replace something, if I know what the problem is. Sounds like you have already done all the things I would have done. Did you also replace the backlight?

• 20" G4 dim display

I have read as much as I can on here but need more info. I have an iMac USB2.0 w/20" that is very dimly lit. When I first got it it was not lit at all. I have tried 2 different inverters thinking maybe the first one was bad. The one that came in it was from www.welovemacs.com.
Needless to say, the lady I got it from totally scammed me. She said a tec said it needed an inverter and when I got it, the entire computer had been taken completely apart, including the LCD itself.
A few things I would like to know is the pin out diagram for the TMDS connector and the power connector for the inverter/mic/speaker. I would also like to know how to test the inverters to see if they are working or not. If I cannot get this display working on the iMax I would like to take it off and try to make it work on it's own.
I am very computer literate and can take this thing apart with no problems. I also do SMD rework on circuit boards so I will have no problem trouble shooting.
Thank you in advance for any help but I need more info then can be found in other posts. Right now I am kind of stuck unless I have a schematic or a perfectly working model to switch parts around, and that isn't going to happen
on an odd note, if someone knows where to get the mini jack for the apple pro speakers, I would like to replace that as it is broken beyond repair.

If you find one, let me know. If you find two, send me both and your mac and I will do it for free (minus shipping of course .
I would do mine first to make sure It comes off ok. The resoldering is easy, the removal is the tough part as I believe it is a thru-hole versus surface mount.
Other then that, I am now trying another inverter board. From there I will try either a new lamp design (CCFL) or even LED's to light up the iMac LCD.
I am also looking into replacing the LCD assy with one from a G5. But the G5 uses LVDS technology for the feed to the LCD while the G4 uses TMDS. I do not think they are compatible. Although I have found conflicts the they are. But that is for another thread.
