Dimming Screen/No Start up/Spontaneous display shut off

Hi everyone,
I bought my PB G4 in January of 2005, so there are still a few months left on AppleCare, but I've been having major problems due to a little accident involving beer and my girlfriend :P
One evening, we were getting ready to go out to the Campus bar and we were drinking in my dorm room. Stupidly, I put my beer down next to the computer and within about 5 seconds we were rushing to mop it up from the keyboard... Now there were no immediate problems with the computer, but about 2 weeks later, the screen started spontaneously dimming, massive screen distortion (coloured lines everywhere) as well as shutting off. Sometimes I would start up the computer and the screen itself would never illuminate. Now it's been getting worse with the screen shutting off every 5-10 minutes.
I am wondering whether this will be covered by apple care, and what could possibly cause this? I've been looking at the new Imac, but I'm scared of all of the problems I've been reading about. I've been told it might be the Logic board, so if it is, how much would that cost if it wasnt covered by apple care?
I'm sorry my question is basically a novel!
Thanks so much in advance!
Derek

Hi, Derek. Only AppleCare can tell you what will or won't be covered, but I'd be astonished if they covered a beer spill. Spills can be extremely damaging, especially when they aren't followed up properly. This article from a respected Mac repair service provides some good information about the possible consequences, the repairs that are commonly required, and what you should have done immediately after the spill occurred. Call AppleCare now and get the repair process underway.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Torch Wont Start, loads partway then shuts off or resets.

My Torch 9800 was recently went for a swim in rainwater. At first I didn't realize the phone was water damaged, and thought it has just randomly turned off, so I took the battery out, put it back it, and then it started making a static sound. So I immediately removed the battery and put the phone in rice. Unfortunitely got my time lines mixed up and tried to put the battery back in too soon and again the phone started making a static sound. So I took the battery back out, and put it back in rice worried that I'd fryed all the circuits. However, 48 hours later I put the battery back in and the loading screen came up, but when it went to the rogers screen pre-my wallpaper the phone reset and started to load again, then it shut off. Everytime I do a battery pull the led light comes on for a couple seconds, and then it shuts off and nothing happens. So I took the sim card out, and tried the batter again and the phone started to load then shut off.
I've found that If I leave the battery out for a while the phone will start to load, but either gets stuck at the 2/3 mark and will freeze there, or it'll shut off. Today I tried putting the battery back in, and the phone loaded to my home-screen, but then froze and shut off.
If I plug my phone into my computer through the USB the phone connects for a second, and then disconnects. I've tried with both the battery in and out.
I've also tried re-installing the OS through the loader app as mentioned (http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry), and through a force connect with desktop manager (by hitting update button when desktop manager tries to connect with my phone when I first plug it in to my computer, before it resets and disconnects). Both times the phone starts to load the OS, but when it comes to re-initialize the phone, it'll disconnect, then reconnect, but then after 4-5 seconds dissconnect again, and so I get the "Application Loader was unable to connect with your device" error while the loader is trying to recconect to JVM...
Is there any hope for my phone? I love my torch and was realllly hoping to hold out until Blackberry releases their new phones in the new year.
I think I might try soaking the phone in 99% isopropanol in hopes in might be just some mineral build up from the rain water.
But I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone has to help me try and get my phone working again.
    Thank you.

Hello...and apologies for the delayed reply!
Hopefully you already have resolved this...but just in case...
Applying power to your BB between it getting wet and doing the proper process (including the maximum waiting time) reduces the chances of success. Further, the only thing predictable about moisture intrusion into a BB (indeed, any electronic device) is that the results will be unpredictable. I've seen some come back up right away and be fine. I've seen others never work at all. I've seen still others run for a bit, and then die later. And every thing in between.
    Good luck!

  • Imac G5 PowerPC Display shuts off intermittently

I have a iMac G5 PowerPC 2.1 GHz running 10.4.11. A few weeks ago I started having this problem where the display shuts off intermittently (as if it was going into screen saver mode). If I move the mouse or press a key the display comes back after a few seconds. I've made sure that I turned off all screen saver settings. I have yet to determine if there is a pattern to this behavior. It happens every few minutes on some days and not for several hours sometimes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help.

I restarted my phone and now I am having problems with it. It will turn on but only goes to the black screen with the droid eye before shutting off again and trying to restart, what can I do to fix that?

I'm sorry to learn that your phone is having problems starting up, marinema08. I'm sorry if this is incorrect, but are you using the original HTC Droid Incredible or a later Droid Incredible model? Please try placing your phone in Safe Mode to see if you are able to move past the Droid eye. http://vz.to/1kdQWVI If you are able to enable Safe Mode, please try deleting any recent applications you have added.

  • Bootcamp overheating. Display shuts off.

I'm running Windows 7 on my macbook pro.
After less than an hour of gaming, the display shuts off. My fans are running at about 6000rpm and my HD temperature is 45 C.
The display will come back on after a short cooling period.
I've never had this problem before, only when running bootcamp.
I've installed the bootcamp 3.0 drivers and everything on the mac side is up to date. Any suggestions?

I had a multiple display setup so noticed that 1 display was dimmer than the others but would be same brightness after shutdown/restart. It would restart fine but after a series of flickers, it would just step down to a lower brightness level within 5-10 minutes of restarting. By the time I took it to Apple, the issue would repeat within 3 minutes so definitely degrading and would go blackout from time/time.

  • 15" Apple Studio Display Shutting Off

My Apple Studio Display (LCD 15", purchased 2000) visual display is intermittently shutting off. Audio remains functional, and I can still type while the display is absent and when it comes back what I typed (ie, on a word doc) is there. The screen saver does not come on during the loss of visual display - the screen just goes black. When I move the mouse around or hit the keyboard repeatedly, the visual will come back. There are not problems with the display when it is visualized. Here's what i've tried so far:
    1. All connections are secure on the ADC cable.
    2. Tried restarting computer several times - no avail
    3. Checked the display settings in system prefs - energy saver is @ 15min.
I'm wondering if the problem is the monitor or something with the computer. I read somewhere in discussions that PRAM batteries can be a problem (mine has never been changed and I don't know how to reset).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really hope to continue to use my monitor!!

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • Brand new Thunderbolt display shuts off randomly

I've had a new ThunderBolt Display for less than a month paired with a brand-new Mac Mini (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000)
and the display just began shutting off randomly.
I also have an external HD drive daisy chained via the display's Thunderbolt port that stops working once the display dies. Tried connecting the Mac Mini alone with no hard drive figuring it might be the drive but no the display still randomly shuts off. Any ideas or suggestions before I call Applecare?

I have a similar setup and problem. My Thunderbolt display (refurb, purchased in February 2012) will randomly turn off, as if it went to sleep - but mouse/keyboard input does not wake it back up. The internal speakers will still output audio. Disconnecting/reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable from the attached Mac Mini (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, OS X 10.7.5, AMD Radeon HD 6630M ) will not resolve the issue. Disconnecting/reconnecting the display's power cord and the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac Mini will resolve the issue temporarily. This began happening maybe a month or two ago, and has probably happened 10 times in the last 30 days. It is completely random, and I have yet to be able to duplicate it on demand.
Steps taken to attempt to fix the issue:
    Confirmed Energy Saver Settings
Confirmed Software up to date (OS 10.7.5)
Attempted Firmware Updates (message states not needed)
    Reset NVRAM
    Reset SMC (unplugging computer)

As well as other discussions concerning random flickering issues with the display.
Since I'm still under warranty, I took my display to a Genius Bar today. The rep didn't really seem to want to hear about what I found on these discussion boards. He says you can pretty much find anything you want to find here, and since it is unmoderated it is not a reliable source of information. I let him know that the issue (as far as I can tell) occurs with different models of Mac Mini's, MB Pros & MB Airs, suggesting it is in fact an issue with the display and not what's connected to it. I added that most folks who reported bringing the displays in for service ultimately ended up with a replacement display, as the service done on the defective display proved to not resolve the issue - but I would of course defer to his judgement.
He decided that they would order and replace the LCD panel. He assured me they would keep the display powered on for 12-24 hours after the service to ensure the issue has been resolved. Truthfully, I am not optimistic. And for the amount it costs to replace the panel ($833.32 from the provided estimate), I speculate this course of action will end up being much more costly for them in the long run. But we shall see!
I will be sure to provide updates as they come.  Wish me luck!

  • Display shuts off

Display has started shutting off when I open laptop. The processor is running Nd I'm able to reboot. When I do the display comes on for a second or two then turns off. The computer continues to boot up. I'm not able to get the display to come back on. MacBook intel duo 2.13 running Lion.

I shut it down overnight and had a successful boot, the display is still working, but I'm leary about closing it, or letting is sleep. I suspect is may be a software issue, but I dont know why shutting it down and letting is sit for hours did anything.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot past grey screen with Apple logo and then shuts off

    This is a long story...
This morning, I would turn it on and it'd go to the grey screen with the Apple logo for a few seconds and then go to the icon that is a circle with a line through it. After reading online, I was able to boot it up in Safe Mode. I messed around a little bit in system preferences thinking I could fix it on my own, not really knowing what I was doing (I'm a *******). I went to Startup Disk in Preferences. I chose the MAC OS X, xxxx and then clicked the lock to prevent further changes and then clicked restart.
Now when I turn on the macbook, it goes to the grey screen with the Apple logo for at least two-three minutes and then just shuts off. Won't boot into Safe Mode now. Please help. I already tried the Command-Option-P-R keys trick like five times.

If you have a full retail DVD for 10.6 you can boot from that by holding the C key during startup...but you will then be in install mode if that is what you want to do.  At least go ahead and see if it will boot ok from the 10.6 disk and then you can decide what you want to do further.
Apple does not have 10.5 for sale anymore from what some other users have said on here so if you want to go that route you will have to find a copy for sale such as from eBay or one of the Mac resellers.
Before taking the machine to someone, try booting from 10.6 and see if that works...that way you can narrow down problems the machine may be having.

  • Screen when white and will not shut off

bought a new ipod today the screen has gone white and will not shut off/  How can i get it back to home screen?

I have had it two years and this is the first issue. My main concern is that the computer does not recognize it in order to reinitialize it. It wont shut off, it wornt do anything, I am just loking for a guide before I have to send it in for repair/replace... I am not feeling much good from the boards, but I am gonna be patient and see if someone stumbles across my please for help-- this cant be the first time someone has had and fixed this problem....

  • My dv7 starts up but immediately shuts off.

I'm not very technologically savy but I think it's something wrong with the startup or battery.
lately, but not everysingle time, I go to turn the computer on the lights on the keyboard light up and the fans turn on and the back light comes on, but the it just shuts off.
I know that the laptop has a tendency to over heat  (a lot) and then shut off but when I'm experiencing the startup issues, the computer hasn't been hot or used that much.
this winter we got the extended life battery for it and when I first tried out, I was having the same startup issues, but it's been about 4 months since that has happened and now it's happening somewhat regularly.
    I hope this makes sense....

Hope when reading this will help with issue, further down this page Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
