Hello:
Frequently, and especially in third party utilities (currently 1 Password) when viewing a window that contains information in a scroll box there is no ability to resize either the window or scroll box. Unfortunately, the small size of the scrolling area and the fact that the words do not wrap to the next line, makes it impossible to see the information I am seeking. Consider the effect if as I type a sentence containing words that extend beyond the width of this window and the reader has no ability to resize the window or wrap the text. I doubt I would see too many helpful responses. Occasionally, the information is presented in a columnar format and by resizing the columns I can wring out a bit more data, but it is rare this helps. I suppose I could cut and paste the information into a word processor, but this diminishes the usefulness of the application when loss of productivity, desktop clutter, and so on are considered.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing is that these dialog boxes work just like those in Windows. ArGGGGGGGGGG. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for responding. The actual function of cutting and pasting is not the problem. It's the fact that the only way to see the extended data in an individual line of data is to copy the information and paste it into a sticky note or text edit or something that will allow me to see the full line of data.
I think much of the difficulty is with third party applications that have been originally designed for Windows. Unfortunately I have run across these windows in some of Apple's software. When one of these windows does present itself, it has no expand capability or scroll bars.
At this point, I don't think there is anything short of rewriting code that will solve the problem so I am marking it solved. Take care and again, thanks for the response.

Proper way to use multiple pop-up dialogs

I've got an application that uses a series of pop-ups to process user information.
A general flow of information is
User clicks a button
->dialog launches asking for confirmation to start process
Dialog returns and system processes request (in a returnListener)
->System launches new dialog, using AdfFacesContext.launchDialog, asking user to confirm changes to be made
Dialog returns and systems processes changes.
What I've noticed is that if I interact with the components in the second dialog 'too much' then the second return listener is not being called.
So, my question is, am I using dialogs properly? Should I try to use actions and navigation links instead of opening and closing dialogs?

Sounds reasonable.
In that vein, is there a way to create 're-usable' dialogs? Ideally I don't want to have to write tons of little dialog that do nothing more interesting than asking "Are you sure?" with the actions set differently.
At first glance, I'm almost tempted to pack a method binding into the process scope and have the dialog check if it exists, and if it does, execute that. But that seems somewhat, inelegant.
Any thoughts?

Windows 7 setup can't create or see partition

Hi all, I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 SP1 on my late 13 MBP. I used BC assistant to mount the iso on a 8gb usb. I have used two different iso files, one from digital river and one from torrents (its not a 'cracked' one or anything, I just couldn't find how to get one from Microsoft. This one is supposedly the same as the one from microsoft.) I plan to get a license key from my university once I make sure I can install it. Anyway, I can mount the iso and download bootcamp files using the assistant. I can make the partition using BC assistant as well, and I set aside 32gb for the Windows partition. After it partitions, it reboots into the Windows setup.
In windows setup, I pick windows 7 professional 64-bit from the list, hit next until I get to the part where you select the partition (of the four) on which to install Windows. When I select the BOOTCAMP one, there is the same little dialog text at the bottom as if I had selected a mac partition, saying that it can't install and the partition must be formatted or something. So I select the BOOTCAMP partition and press Format. When I press Next, a message appears saying that "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
I have also tried: unplugging all USB peripherals
using the right instead of left USB port
not formatting the drive and pressing 'next' only
deleting the bpptcamp partition from within windows setup and then forming a new partition and then formatting that
using both ISO images
selecting each of the four editions I can choose from (home, home premium, pro, and ultimate)
repairing/verifying the mac HD and permissions
Note that every time I re-attempt, I am forced to remove the windows partition and recreate the partition using BC assistant. In other words, if I quit windows setup and restart, hold down option, and select the windows USB to boot, a different windows setup starts up. It is similar but has slightly different screens than before, and after I press "install now" (a button absent from the first setup) an error message pops up saying that a CD/DVD driver is missing and I must locate it. When I try to locate the driver, which I would think would be in the bootcamp folder on the USB, it can't find the USB! Under My Computer all I see are the C: drive (inaccessible from here) and X:, which I think is the windows partition because it has some of the windows system files on it. I can't get past this stage of looking for a driver without completely removing the partition and then rebuilding the windows partition using BC assistant.
What do I do?
If it helps, in the mac os disk utility I can look at the Info for the windows partition, and in the properties it says "Owners Enabled: No, Can be Formatted: No, Bootable: No". Does that matter?

Showing tranformation controls, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Mac Tiger

The 'show transformation controls' are checked but the controls do not display. Going to Edit - transform - ...... they will display, but then disappear again and do not show on re selecting with the move tool.
This has only just started to happen on the Mac and does not correspond to any upgrades or new software and has been working fine since the installation of CS2 quite some time ago.

A new version of Firefox, which downloaded automatically, says Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that's refusing connections, even though I had access before the download.

I was using Firefox earlier in the day with no problem. About half an hour ago I tried to get on the Internet using Firefox (as always). When I did, I was greeted with a little dialog box showing that something was downloading. That's happened before.
This time, though, I was greeted by an error page that said Firefox was configured to use a proxy server that's refusing connections.
I'm not on a network. I have a desktop computer that connedts to a wireless modem that I share only with my wife. I didn't change my settings on either. Neither did my wife.
My "Connection Settings" box still says "use system proxy settings." There are no entries in the manual settings boxes.
I want to emphasize that I changed *nothing.*
I need to know, please, how I can set my computer to get back onto the Internet or, failing that, how I can go back to the previous version of Firefox.

You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"

How do I connect Airport Time Capsule to a Windows Vista Machine?

I was going NUTS trying connect my new Airport Time Capsule v6.xxx to an older Vista Home machine. I searched these posts for an answer and found nothing remotely helpful. After trying a million different things...
Here is how I did it:
Open Airport Utility
Finder>Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility
Click on the image of the Airport Time capsule
Go to top of screen menu Click on EDIT in the little dialog box that pops up once you click EDIT look to the top of the screen and click on BASE STATION
Click on SHOW PASSWORDS, Carefully note the really long WPA Pre Shared Key code for "xxxx"
Go to your Vista machine and down at the bottom you will see you network connection icon. It looks like two computer monitors and a globe. Click once on it and open NETWORK and SHARING CENTER
Click once on SET UP A NETWORK CONNECTION > NEXT > WIRELESS> SET UP CONNECTION OR NETWORK> MANUALLY CONNECT TO A WIRELESS NETWORK>NEXT
Now enter the network name as you set it up in the Airport Utility and then enter the 64 digit WPA PRE SHARED KEY CODE in the SECURITY KEY/PASSPHRASE box
Click NEXT...Your Vista machine should say searching for IP address then it should connect to the Airport. I hope this saves someone the hours I spent messing with this. Good Luck!!!

Do you mean wirelessly extend.. it won't work.. not just because the WRT54GS is G wireless (super G is just extended G)... but because it is not apple router.. apple can only extend wireless between routers that are apple.
You can plug the TC into the linksys via ethernet.. and run it as an AP .. use the same wireless name.. ie ssid and security but use and lock a different wireless channel.. that is better by far as it is then N wireless. you can also set 5ghz to a different name and use that for 5ghz capable stuff.
You can use EOP adapters if you cannot run ethernet but doing it via wireless.. is really not worth it.
Why don't you put the TC in place of the WRT.. and load dd-wrt on the Linksys and use that in universal repeater mode.. that would work.

Why do I need a degree from M.I.T. to change my passwords in Thunderbird?

With all the brouhaha about NSA and Heartbleed, and with all the recent problems with hacked emails, one would think the developers at Thunderbird would figure out an easier way for us to change our passwords on a regular basis. I use the Master password, but I also have several email addresses under the master account, each with different passwords. I have spent the better part of 3 hours just looking for a way to make these changes. It now appears that the only thing i can do is delete all my Thunderbird files from both computers, re-download, and set up all the accounts again. If I have to do that, it just makes more sense to change email programs.

Thank you - but that doesn't work. I already found where the passwords were stored in the way you outline. But when I try to log on again, no dialog box comes up for me to enter the new passwords. I log out of Thunderbird, I clear the cache, I enter the Master Password, but then it just hangs there. No option but to close it again and try again.
When I went online to the Mozilla help forum, I found something that indicated I need to go into the User folder, find the Library folder, then find the Thunderbird folder called Profile. I also did that and it's like trying to read hieroglyphics. I found the Profile folder and looked at it, but nowhere did I see a file that indicated it was a password folder. I literally started this project more than 4 hours ago now.
REALLY Mozilla? Is there a reason you hide the password change mechanism even from your users? This is frustrating as hell! How about a little dialog box in the preferences folder that says "change password" ??

Newbie help with sample Studio app. "Plain Text Editor"

I'm trying to make the jump from AppleScript to AppleScript Studio, and because I want to eventually write a document producing application I thought I'd start with the textbook example "Plain Text Editor" included with Xcode. I think I see how menu items are connected to "Target/Actions," and I was able to build and run it without difficulty. It's remarkable how little AppleScript had to be written to produce a rudamentary text editor. But in playing with the built application, I noticed that the Revert menu item does not work exactly as expected.
If you create a text document, and then make some change to it, and then click the Revert menu item, you get the expected little dialog asking if you want to revert to the most recently saved version, but if you then click the Revert button, the text displayed in the text view object does not revert to the original. However, something is happening, because whatever code is behind the Save, Close, and Quit menu items does seem to be "aware" that the Revert item has been invoked: because if you click one of these after Revert, the "do you want to save changes?" warning doesn't appear, just as one might expect.
The Revert menu item seems to be connected to a "Target/Action" called "revertDocumentToSaved:" which sounds perfectly reasonable. But does the fact that Revert doesn't cause the displayed editing text to revert mean that (a) there is a bug in the code behind this Target/Action, or (b) that the writer of this textbook example just didn't bother to do everything needed for the Revert item to work in an intuitive manner?
Whichever the answer, what would I do to make it work properely?
It seems like there must be some sort of connection between the text view object in the editing window, and the Close, Save, Quit suite of menu items, because the behavior of these is dependant on whether or not there are unsaved changes in the text view object. But looking through the Inspector for this object, I don't see any, neither AppleScripts, nor Outlets, nor Target/Actions. Where and for what should I be looking?

I think -- and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong -- that this is a place where AppleScript Studio's implementation just isn't done right. Either they intended to add a "revert" handler somewhere and forgot, or else they meant to have it send an existing message and didn't.
I haven't done any document-based applications -- heck, I've only dabbled slightly in AppleScript Studio -- so there may be a "deeper" answer to this, but you might consider just hooking the menu item up to send its "choose menu item" handler to your document script, and have it react accordingly.

Hide Update no longer working in Yosemite

I've looked at many threads for an answer to this, but while many are close, I've yet to find an answer to this specific issue.
Before Yosemite, you could "hide" software update notifications from the App Store by Control (right) clicking in the body of the Update notice in the App Store and be presented with the option to "Hide Update". Since moving to Yosemite, this no longer works for me. It's not just that you don't get the option to hide - sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. And even when you do, it doesn't work. For example, right now I have Notices for 2 updates, one for Digital Raw Compatibility, and one for iMovie, neither of which I want. When I Control click on the "Raw" update the little dialog box to "Hide Update" appears but clicking on it does nothing. With the iMovie update, Control clicking does not even present that option.
Not an earth shattering issue, but that little red number in the AppStore dock icon and the daily Notifications bug me out.

Cannot edit text sufficiently within the Photo E-mail service (Elements 11)

Greetings to all, a little help required please....
Just purchased Elements 11 - excellent product at the price and am having a great deal of fun using it.
One frustrating flaw within the Photo E-mail service....
I've been using the Adobe e-mail service and it sends e-mail just fine having set up the account as required.
Each new e-mail appears with the text "Here are the files I want to share with you."
Now I'd like to replace that with some different text. I can delete it and replace it on the first editing page, and it stays there after I click 'Next' to the following 'Customise Layout' section.
Clicking on 'Next' after this page, we have the final e-mail page, and the text has reverted back to 'Here are the files I want to share with you' again......
I can delete it again, but cannot type in any further text anywhere on that screen.
Any help on this??
Shame, because the programme generally is superb. Have transformed a number of pics already, and it would be nice to use the e-mail prog that's built in as I'd like to use it, adding text as required. Otherwise, why have all the font and layout choices available if not??

Click on organizer from the Welcome Screen but keep pressing the keyboard keys - don't let up.
You will get a little dialog box asking if you want to delete the settings file. Click "Yes." You can let go of the keyboard keys now.
This will rebuild the file for you and often solves the issue.
Try to send the email again.

Photoshop Elements 7 Editor Error & 10 trial error

Hello,
Yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 7 (x64) on my PC & have completely updated it through Windows Updater, I than installed PSE7 (disk that I brought new 3 years ago & has worked fine up till now) & followed the instructions.
Now, it loads the first screen fine (Organise/Edit/Create/Share) & Organise,Create & Share each load fine but when I click on Edit I get this error
Editor - Photoshop Elements 7.0
Could not initialise Photoshop Elements because the file could not be found.
I have already installed it on my old (now completely dead) Vista laptop, this PC & my mothers Win7 laptop & all work/ed.
The thing I have tried are -
Uninstalling & reinstalling PES7.
Uninstalling & reinstalling the OS & installing PSE7 first.
Replacing all files in 'Computer > Local Disk (C;) > Program Files (x86) > Adobe > Photoshop Elements 7.0 , with the files from my mothers laptop.
Have 'Deleted the Settings File' (Shift + Ctrl + Alt)
Running the Elements Organizer in a new user account.
& ringing customer support who told me to ask here.
I have tried the trial version of PSE10 which does not work, I get the following error
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
Could not open a scratch file because the file could not be found.
& clicking OK the following error
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
Could not initialise Photoshop Elements because the file could not be found.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

C: > Users > [user name] > Photoshop Elements > 10.0 > Editor > Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.psp
Right click on the Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.psp, and select Delete.
A new preferences file is created the next time you start Photoshop Elements.

Opening PC projects on a Mac

Apologies if this has been asked before but I can't find the answer.
I recently moved to a Mac based system and have several project files (.prproj) created on a PC. I now want to finish them on my Mac but am unable to open them. Is there a way to do this or must I find a PC running Premiere Pro to finish them off? I no longer have a PC version.
Both systems are/ were running Premiere Pro CS4.

Duncan,
There are two ways to get a Project into PrPro. The first is to just Open the Project, and the second is to choose New Project, assign the matching Preset and then Import that other Project into the new one. Have you tried both methods?
Also note, there are many Transitions and Effects in the PC version, that do not exist in the Mac version. This THREAD will give you an idea of the differences.
Might be of zero help to you, but I've opened older Mac Projects into PrPro on the PC. Where there were Transitions that did not exist in my version, PrPro gave me a nice little dialog screen, telling me the exact spot that the Transition would be missing, and what it was named in the Mac Project. I just jotted down the location of each one, then navigated to those spots, when the Project Opened, and replaced the offending Transitions with Cross-Dissolves. Seems that there were three, with one being an Adobe Transition that had been removed, or maybe never in the PC version, and the other two were 3rd party Transitions, that I just did not have. Do not recall if I got any messages on Effects, but think that there was one missing. Do not recall the details now, but the Projects all Opened fine. I did not even have to Import them, like I recommended above. All else played perfectly.

Render problems and fed up with after effects

Hi all,
I'm I the middle of trying to do a very simple pan and scan corporate video, the crux being its in stereoscopic 3D. First I've tried using cineform plug ins and have had numerous problems and basically don't think highly of their product. Since after effects has plug ins for stereoscopic I've moved to try and use them. All seems to be going alright for most of the footage. But I'm have some issues with a very import pant part of one video.
My set up
Mac 2x2.4 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon
12GB of ram
Mac OSX 10.7.2
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB
NVIDEA Quadro 4000 2048MB
After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.0.253)
630GB free on 1TB boot drive
1.8TB free on 3TB external drive 1
100GB free on 3TB external drive 2
My comp is 7 layers. Duration 1:46:00 output is Side by Side
Layer 1- animation with alpha clip. Opacity is keyframed to do a 'dissolve' at the beginning and end of the clip. TC in 53:11, out 1:05:01
Layer 2- comp. stereoscopic 3D. Made from using a camera and Create Stereo 3D Rig. It's a mask of the earth in space. 1:46:00
Layer 3- animation with alpha clip. Opactiy keyframed same as layer 1. Clip aniamtionwas done in the original comp. TC in 1:25:09, out 1:45:10.
Layer 4- animation with alpha clip. Opacity key framed same as layer 1. Clip aniamtionwas done in the original comp.TC in 1:03:2,' out 1:16:10.
Layer 5- animation with alpha clip. Opacity key framed same as layer 1. Clip aniamtionwas done in the original comp.TC in 31:12, out 48:11.
Layer 6- animation with alpha clip. Opacity key framed same as layer 1. Clip aniamtionwas done in the original comp.TC in 6:06, out 21:14.
Layer 7- animation codec clip. 1:46:00 duration.
Now when I attempt to render this out to a ProRes 422 file so that I can join it up with the other footage in Primeire Pro, I basically sit around for 2 hours and then I get a nice little dialog box stating "an output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153464).
This is maddening to say the least.
Other issues
After Effects basically is Pathetically slow in rendering out a ProRes or Animation or any type of mov file. A simple 30sec clip takes 1 hour 47 minutes. All the clip contains is a tiff left eye and right eye and the 3D glasses plug in. That's it. I know my system isn't the biggest out there (I bought what I could afford). But these render times are ludicrous. If I turn of the multiprocessing it doesn't help. I have the openGL turned on. That doesn't seems to do anything. I have it set up to use 10Gb of ram, yet the system says I'm only using 37% of my ram, none of my processors and I have no idea about the graphics card. Am I totally missing something about how after effects actually does rendering? I'm from the old school of Jaleo and Shake and Nuke. However I set out on my own as a freelancer and I can't really afford Nuke (besides I don't like that it doesn't have a timeline). So I purchased Adobe production premium thinking it can do the job I want, however it seems to act like a spoilt brat software. Yes im ranting had really having thoughts of buyers remorse.
If anyone out there has any advice or thoughts on how to get this to work I'd be more than grateful to hear from you.

AE only takes what it needs, as do any programs with dynamically managed memory. It's not cramming everything into RAM when it doesn't have to.

Secondary processors/ cores will only be used, if you enable the sad excuse that is the "Render multiple Frames simultanuously" feature. As Todd suggested, read that article on "optimum" settings. Just keep in mind that what works well for one project may not work at all for the next one when the balance of footage I/O vs. pixel processing vs. memory consumption changes. You're gonna learn to really hate this...

AE doesn't use it for the most part. Even if you enable all of the hardware acceleration features, AE may turn them off behind your back, one such condition being the use of MP rendering. Can't have both. Conversely, MP rendering might be turned off just the same, if specific effects or features are used. That's also expleianed in teh help. Your only chance of halfway benefiting from hardware acceleration is buying some third-party plug-ins that have their own implementations of OpenGL and CUDA. Still, since you use two different cards i nyour system, that may also be problematic...

Timeline to External / Source Monitor

I am presently migrating to CS5 Prod. Prem. Just recently installed all apps.
In Prem. Pro, How can I get the footage placed in the sequence timeline to gang to the Source Monitor Panel and/or output to my external monitor? From the source monitor panel, I can select the sequence, but when I manually scrub back and forth thru the sequence using the timeline there is no output to the external tv monitor, only to the desktop program monitor within the PP workspace.
Thanks in advance for the help. I'm sure I'll have many more questions. I'm migrating over from A/ FCS3.

no go... I can only output to the external monitor through the Source Monitor. When I try to turn off output from the program monitor, I just get a little dialog box saying Turn Off Dropped Frame Warning with a check box and okay button. My output seems to be locked to the Source monitor. I am able to bring up the dialog boxes you spoke of in the Program monitor.
I'm outputting thru a Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI/Component/Composit pci card. The card has it's own panel in System Preferences of the OS and is outputting thru HDMI to the external monitor. As I said, I'm able to output from the Source Monitor in PP, but not the Program Monitor in PP. The timeline seems locked to the Program monitor, Is there a way to link the timeline to the Source Monitor, instead of the Program Monitor?
