Dip to Black Video Transitions

I have a problem with the "VIdeo Transitions/Dissolve/Dip to Black". That is, the sequence after rendering played on Premiere CS3 looks fine, but once built with Encore into a folder, and viewed on the computer and on a TV, the transitions are not smooth, they look "noisy", or rather the passage to or from the black is "blochy" not smooth.
Your input as to how I can remedy this problem will be greatly appreciated.

OK everybody,
I have toiled with this problem, bult on disk, on image then on disk via ImgBurn, according to the advise I was given, could not get rid of this problem. Then I went back to Premiere, I created a black slide and used cross-dissolve just in case....I searched the Premiere forum as well the Encore forum, could not locate any similar problems.....I tried different methods, but whenever a "black" is involved I do not get smooth transitions. Can somebody give me a clue please All my clips are DV avi captured in Premiere, all the slides are made via Photoshop NTSC-preset.
I have a problem with the dip to black transition on my computer and on the DVD, although the movie created with Premiere CS3 plays fine on my computer.
The slides are fine, they don`t flicker, cross-dissolve is very smooth, it is only the dip to black in any shape or form that is not smooth. Maybe the word "flicker" is inappropriate, pardon my English, I don`t know how else to say it. It is just that the transition to and from black is not smooth, all else is perfect.
I will appreciate any clues, ideas, comments or whatever else...
Thanks

  • "Dip to black" audio transition?

Anyone know where I could find an audio transition that will do basically the same thing as a dip to color video transition? Just need one clips audio to fade out, then the next one fade in.

Actually, if you spent more time with the manuals and software, we might not need to look at this post.
Notice that FCP gives you 2 default audio transitions - crossfades ( +3db, or 0db). Choose 0bd. It's also in the browser under effects, drag it from there. This should give you what you want but it's not ideal by far, needs rendering and avoids keyframing, which is pretty crucial to editing.
If you feel static it's probably because people read posts and wonder how someone can edit a sequence and not know these things.

  • DIP to BLACK Transition

I'm using Premiere Pro 5.02 on a new i7 system with 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 470 graphics ard. Generally, everything is working fairly well.
However, when I choose the DIP to BLACK transition, the Mecury Playback Engine comes to a halt and playback across the transition stalls or stops entirely.
Has anyone else had problems with this transition?

  • Transition (Dip to Black) while using Track Matte

I have used Trace Matte to hide faces in a sequence. In order to do more than one person the sequence includes multiple Matte Tracks.
When I use the dip to black transition I am getting a fade to black and also seeing the mosaic then it goes to the next sequence. making the transition jerky.
If I remove all of the dip to black transitions that sequences all cleanly change.
Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

Using transitions on multiple stacked clips can lead to some unwanted results, since you're changing the opacity of multiple layers at once, instead of en masse. Nesting would work, but then you'd need to extend the footage in your nests to create handles.
The simple way to do it is to create a piece of Black Video (File > New > Black Video), add it on a track above the transition point, and then create opacity animation up and down on it, or just add cross dissolves. The result is a dip to black that will not change the opacity of the underlying layers--it's fading black in and out over the layers.

  • Video playback in Keynote has random dip to black at start of videos

I've assembled a string of Quicktime videos in Keynote, which was composed on my desktop and imported into the iPad through iTunes. Usually the first or second video begins with a quick dip to black before it starts. These are 768 x 1024 videos I compressed with Quicktime through lots of experimentation to work with iPad. Thinking that might be the problem, I put together a file using videos that were compressed using iTunes with the Apple TV setting recommended for iPad. The flashes of black still occurred.
    Anyone else experienced this problem?

  • Dip to Black - start at 50%

I always start my fade ins at 50% and end with 100%.  Meaning it gradually transitions from black to the clip throughout the entirety of the transition selection.  By default, Premiere sets the fade in at 0% and ends at 100%, hereby making it black for the first half of the clip then transitions into the clip.
The problem is that even though I start the transition at 50%, the clip still remains at total black until halfway through the transition, hereby ignoring my controls.  In fact, if I set it to start at 50% and end at 50%...it still plays the default transition.
Is this a glitch I need to live with?  Basically I'm having to double my transition sizes to compensate, which is silly.  Any advice?

    Ann,
What you're witnessing is not the glitch; that's actually correct in how Dip to Black should work. The Start and End values are not degrees/percentages of opacity, but are rather the percent of "completeness" of the transition. Since Dip to Black goes from 0% opacity to 100% opacity back to 0% opacity (relative to black, not the outgoing or incoming video), 50% in the transition completion SHOULD be 100% black. Here's a graphic representation (I didn't have time to paint it or build it to scale):
The white represents 0% opacity of the black of the transition, where the black represents 100% opacity. Think of the transition as a black solid that has the duration of the transition. By default, the transition starts with 0% opacity of that black solid, ramps up to 100% opacity halfway through, and then ramps back down to 0%. That's why, typically, if you start the transition at 50% (as the OP is doing) you are effectively creating a fade from black. By it's nature, Dip to Black (or White) is a double-sided transition, and therefore requires this reassignment of the Start or End value to achieve the effect.
Personally, I would never use Dip to Black for this purpose, even if it worked correctly with hardware MPE, as it's just too fiddly. However, regardless of the practicality of the technique, it does reveal an issue with hardware MPE.
To the OP: as Craig (shooternz) suggests, the following creates a fade of multiple layers without altering each individual layers transparency (which is a common issue, since a lot of people just throw dissolves on each layer to fade in/out):

  • Need help timing titles on black video

Here is what I’ve been doing but maybe there is another (better way) to do it… I select Black Video from Edit and it automatically shows up at the beginning of the timeline. Next I select Title from Edit and type the title, intros, etc. The title will play for 4.5 seconds, but the Black Video will play longer or shorter (if I increase or decrease the duration). I would like to be able to increase or decrease the duration of the title within black video.  Like have the title, intros, etc., fade in and out on a black background after so many seconds. Thanks for any and all help.

Possibly an easier way to do what you want is to not use the Black Video beneath your Titles. So long as you do not change the background of the Title, you will get black.
Now, in Timeline View Mode, use a small segment of Black Video. Normally, I start all Timelines with 02 sec. of Black Video for a couple of reasons. I create the Black Video (New Icon>Black Video) and then Dbl-click it to open it in the Source Monitor. There, I set the Out Point, so that I get 02 sec. Duration. I drag this to the start of the Timeline. Then, create you Titles as needed, and place them behind the Black Video on the same Video Track. If you wish another Title Duration, than the default, in Edit>Preferences>General, set the Duration for Still Images (note - this is in Frames, so you might need to do a bit of math). Between your Titles, use the Dip-to-Black Transitions. You will get the same effect as having the Titles over Black Video.
Hope that this is what you need, and that this helps,

  • How to preview video transitions in CS4

Is there a way to preview a video transition before applying the effect in the timeline, similar to the feature in Elements 7? Alternatively, is there a site that demonstrates each of these effects so as to save time and avoid having to memorize them all?

I use butt-cuts, Dip-to-Black and Cross-Dissolves for 99% of my Transitions. There have been a very few others used over the years, but I must have a compelling aesthetic reason to do so.
Now, I do not do weddings, soccer camp videos, music videos or several other genre of Projects. Were I doing these, then I might be coerced into using a few more, but only if the client offered "hazard pay."
No, I do not want anybody really noticing any Transition. I want to convey things like a "change of place," or a "passage of time," but on a subliminal level. The most scathing criticism that I could receive would be a viewer asking how I did such-n-such Transition. That would indicate major failure on my part.
If you look at most feature films, you will see but a very few Transitions, outside of maybe the intro, or the trailer. Obviously, music videos are a major exception, but even concert features normally butt-cut from camera to camera.
That is also why I never even think about doing things like "Random Pan & Zooms." Each image is unique, and requires that I treat each one as such.
Some where, I have hundreds of Hollywood FX, that came with earlier programs. All it would take is just a batch file extension change, to use them in PrPro. However, I have seen no reason to even do that. If it is not an integral part of the story, I do not use it. Maybe that's just my days in cine, where there were but three ways to do it?

  • TROUBLE WITH DIP TO BLACK IN AFTER EFFECTS CS5

i finished editing a music video in premiere pro c5 then i used after effects & my cross dissolve transitions are in there but my dip 2 black isnt showing up i can see it in the composition but i cant see the effect as i watch my clip is it a bug or sumthen? also i had 2 use cs 5.5 after effects just to see my cross dissolves i read it was a bug but i really need this question about dip to black transition any help thanks.........

Your question isn't clear. Are you using After Effects CS5 or CS5.5?
What exactly are you seeing and what are you doing?
I'm going to guess about how to interpret your post and point you to this thread about a bug in After Effects CS5 and a workaround for it:

That bug is fixed in After Effects CS5.5.

  • Video Transition: Dissolve disabled

I was trying to use a video transitional effect: Dissolve, which is my favorite. When clicking a "Video Transitions" folder under "Effect," I see Dissolve is highlighted red while all other transitional effects are highlighted in blue. Anyway, I dragged Dissolve to Timeline to apply. But it is not working when I preview. So I was trying to create the same effect by creating a few keys of opacity. It is not working, either. When previewing, the film went on ignoring opacity key frames.... My pc is HP, OS is Vista, 32-bit, 3GB, and Premiere Pro. Any advice or suggestions?

Following Jeff's suggestions, read up on "Handles."
Now, if you *need* to do a Transition, in an area, as Jeff describes in his last paragraph, Dip to Black is the only choice - no Dither Dissolves, no Page Curl, no Cross-Dissolves. Again, the "Handles" info will give you all of the detail that you need, including the do's, the don'ts and the "what will happen if I try it." Premiere will usually even throw an error message, that is explained in detail in the "Handles" section of the manual, though without that reading, you might not be able to make much sense of what it means, but it boils down to "what Jeff said."

PS this is an often misunderstood, or overlooked aspect of NLE work. With film, it was a lot easier to grasp, 'cause you could actually see the frames on your A-roll and your B-roll and where the black leader was spliced to each. With digital, while it's MUCH easier to do, it's not as visually graphic and people just miss the concept. Once you read about it and think about it, it'll become patently clear.

  • Dip To Black jitter

I've imported a video from my MotionPro HD camera which is 720P and set the project up accordingly.  My issue is whenever i put a dip to black it jitters, or studders, when going to and from black.  I've tried several things to alleviate the problem but no such luck.  I have seen posts where the bitrate was too low to accomplish the dip but my source video is 15mbs so that seems to be way above what others had.  I have tried to change the dip length as well with no luck.
    *Edit*
Dip to black works flawless if i cut a video and insert the transition but if i have 2 different video segments that are in different spots in my timeline and put them together with a dip to black between them it fails and jitters.  I hope I'm explaining this properly.

I appreciate now Ae is a technical tool which is going to take time to master which is difficult when I had yesterday to send the completed video to the client. Big problems for me are getting generated when I try to import Pr with Ae. • Can't add dip to black to a clip

I have created 3 different sequences, and placed a clip into each one. I went into #s 1 and 2, and added a dip to black transition to the end of the clip in each. When I went to #3, I was unable to add the dip to the clip in there. Dragging the transition to the clip on the timeline gave me a had with a circle + slash. Double clicking the transition wit hteh clip selected did nothing. The layer is not locked. What could be going on?

Yes. It looks like I may have encountered a bug. I'm running CS5 under Mountain Lion. I had googled to see if there were any known issues, but everything seemed to say they were compatible with no problems. I have also noticed a similarly weird issue on the UI of another application.

  • Mac-compatible plug-in for feathered-wipe video transitions?

Does anyone know of a Mac-compatible alternative for SpiceMaster for creating feathered wipe video transitions? I've just been handed off a job (let's just say the company who started it is "no longer in the picture") and all they used feathered wipe via the SpiceMaster plug-in about 100-150 times (in a 15 minute video — sigh). Anyways, I can't change the visual direction of the project, I just have to clean up the mess. We're Mac-only and the SpiceMaster plug-in isn't available on the Mac.
While one option is to use a liner wipe Video Effect (which allows for the feather), because of the amount of transitions in this job, that's not only a major pain in the arse in itself, but having to move clips in alternating tracks and overlap the footage, etc. becomes a huge headache when they decide to change the edit (as, all of a sudden, the alternating of the clips to different tracks goes all out of wack).
Anyway, I'm hoping someone could suggest a Video Transition plug-in that would allow me to do feathered wipes. It'd mean the difference between a quick replacing of the SpiceMaster transition with whatever plug-in I could use vs. a nightmare of a project using the linear wipe Video Effect.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!!
    Kristin.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried using the gradient wipe, but was unsuccessful in attaining the desired effect. Here's a quick screencap to show what I'm seeing:
The problem is, this results in a very narrow wipe. I mean, it's no longer a fine line between image1 and image2, there is some feather, but I really need to feather it out. The gradient I created is the same dimensions as the sequence I'm working in, and is a gradient from 100% black on the left side to pure white on the right, with a nice gradient in between. But, when I use this, it's almost like the source gradient is squished in (on the width) resulting in a very narrow feathered wipe.
Below is an example of the rendered video as it was when using SpiceMaster to create the feathered wipe. The first image is the image directly before the wipe starts, the second image the image directly after the end of the wipe, and the third image is a capture mid-wipe. As you can see, there is a very wide feather during the transition as opposed to what is seen in the screen capture above.
Am I doing something wrong when creating my custom gradient? It seems like, since my source file is a nice, wide gradient, it should result in a wide feather, but for some reason it seems to squish down into a narrow feather?
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Kristin.
