Direct attachment of a server to 6100 UCS

Hi,
I would like to know if i can directly attach a standalone server with 10G CNA to the UCS 6100 10G port and it login to the switch. For example the way we do with c5020 switch. In the 6100 CLI config guide i have not seen any command like binding a vfc to a physical eth int or VSAN FCoE VLAN association.
Also can any one please explain at present how it works? I see from config guide it connects to the Blade chassis below. I guess the hardware where 10G ports from 6100 are connected is a fabric extender sitting on the blade chassis.
If i have a fabric extender connceted to 6100 and let my server connect to the FEX, will that work? I am just trying to learn connectivity point of view.
Thanks.

This video is helpful but it did not answer many Qs i have related to appliance port configuration.
As my FI is independent POD, i dont need End-Host mode right ? At least on the Fabric side. In the LAN side i guess it does not matter ? Can any one correct me please ??
Also once i configure the applicance port, where the appliance port will log in ? I did not see a show flogi database command. Besides i am not sure, if the UCS FI can work as FCF? Am i expected to see Discovery Advertisement that usually FCF sends to VN_port? How about LLDP? Can it negotiate LLDP with the appliance port which has SP-MA supported CNA.
Thanks,

  • UCS direct attach to NetApp in Flexpod

    Hello Experts,
We have a new project  which is based on Flexpod design and needs a direct attach between the FI 6248  and NetAPP storage.(Without a Fabric Switch N5K or MDS)
We had concern if Cisco  has validated this design.Or else if there is CVD(Cisco Validated Design) based  on Direct attach of UCS with NetAPP storage. Also if there is/are any constraints  / limitations that must be considered in such a direct attach  design
Is there any document (CVD) by Cisco or NetApp which details the diagram/configuration steps and other relevant information for the direct attach between UCS FI and Netapp storage.
FYI: The architecture will be like this
    2 FI6248
    1 5108 Chassis
    1 B200m2 and 1 b200m3 Blade
    2 2104 IOM
No Fabric Switch between FI and NetApp storage.
An early response will be very much appreciated and a useful doc with details.

    Thanks Abhinav and Matthew,
Now Since UCSM 2.1 supports direct-attached NetApp.So to validate the architecture I updated by UCSM to 2.1.1a and now it should support a direct attach NetApp with UCS System.
I have conncted ports 31 and 32 of both FI (FC Stoarge Port with required SFPs) to my NetApp Device. But problem I am facing is,it says Link failure or not-connected and is in Orange Colour.Any idea where am I wrong?
I dont want to use FCoE Traffic or NFS between FI and NetApp.I want to use the FC traffic between UCS and NetApp.Is it possible and if yes How?

  • Can the Cisco UCS 6120XP direct attach the EMC CX4-120 by fibre protocol ?

    Hi all
I have two question for Cisco UCS
Q1: Can the Cisco UCS 6120XP direct attach the EMC CX4-120 by fibre protocol ?
Q2: I know the UCS 61XX Series support the Cisco SAN Switch(MDS).But we are only Brocade san switch ,
so  UCS 61XX Series supoort Brocade san switch ?
Thanks , I really want to know the information .

Q1: The 6120s run in NPV (N_Port Virtualization) mode which means it acts as a proxy for the blade vHBAs and doesn't participate in flogi (fabric logins). When a fabric switch runs in this mode it requires an uplink to a faber switch for flogi and zoning. Due to this you cannot direct attach the the 6120 to an array's front-end fiber ports.
Q2: Yes you can uplink the 6120 to a Brocade fabric as long as the Brocade supports NPIV.

  • Cisco UCS FC Direct Attach Question

We are looking at the Cisco UCS as a replacement for our existing servers and SAN switches. As I understand the fabric interconnect can replace our existing SAN switches and that we will still be able to zone the ports just like we do on our SAN switches today.
Can someone confirm how using the fabric interconnects as a replacement for our SAN switches will work? I read that the fabric interconnects have to be in switch mode for this to work. How does this affect the other connections we will have to our Ethernet network?
    Thanks.

  • Zoning in direct attached storage environment

    Hi everibody,
I have a small humble question about zoning.
When using JBOD, each physical disk had its own WWPN and FCID. The zoning configuration is for a server WWPN against disk WWPN so basically each server has its own disk.
Now for more advance storage systems (such as EMC) instead of physical disks to be mapped to servers we are mapping LUNs per server. I thought that for each LUN a WWPN and FCID are created and then you map the server to that LUN’s WWPN. Now I see that it does not work this way.
I have a UCS system with direct attached storage (EMC VNX5100). The active zoneset shows that all servers WWPNs are mapped to the same target WWPN (which is the EMC). There is a zone entry for each server.
So basically the result of that is that all servers can access the same target and the EMC controls the isolation of the LUNs from other servers.
If this is correct, then my question is why do I need the zoning configuration in this scenario ? why not set the default zone to permit and let EMC control LUN access?
BTW, this scenario of one storage system attached to the SAN is the same if we use Nexus 5k, so why bother and set zoning if the EMC can control the access to LUNs?

If this is correct, then my question is why do I need the zoning configuration in this scenario ? why not set the default zone to permit and let EMC control LUN access?
You could of course create multiple Storage Target Policies (different FC interface on controller, resp. other storage arrays)
Zoning is just another level of security, default zone permit is not recommended to be used in productive environments. The standard classical procedure is: zoning AND lun masking / mapping.
In the case of N5k, you have to do the zoning manually (CLI), or with DCNM-SAN; in the case of local zoning on the Fabric Interconnect, UCS Manager does it automatically for you.
    Hope that helps !

  • Slow performance from externally attached drive to server

We have a new 2TB external drive connected via USB to our server running 10.5.5. For some odd reason, some users are getting the beachball of death when connecting to certain folders on this volume. I'm able to connect via my machine running 10.5.x, but it takes upwards of a minute to simply display the folder listing. We don't have a FW 400-to-800 cable, so we can't hook it up via firewire.
This is one of those new 2TB MyBook Western Digital external drives, which we've found to be a bit flaky. So, that could be the problem.

USB is the worst possible interface for external media. It is slow and will always be slow, so that's one factor.
A second contributor comes with folders that contain many files (e.g. thousands). The Finder has a real problem reading that many files in one directory, even off a direct-attached disk, and that problem is exacerbated over a network connection.
Put the two issues together and you almost have a worst-case scenario. Moving to a faster interface such as FireWire will help, but if that's not an option, reorganizing the data into fewer files per folder may be your workaround.

  • Backup Oracle VMs using a direct attached tape library

    Hello all,
I'm in the process of getting a specification for a new Oracle VM host server which will run OEL VMs and host Oracle databases (10g and others), currently we're looking at getting an HP DL580 and a MSL6000 tape library using SAS connectors.
Regarding backups, I understand that Oracle VM Server doesn't have a built in mechanism for backups so would need to use a backup method from within the virtual machines.
Is it possible, and advisable, to use a tape library directly attached to the host server and use an OEL VM running Symantec Netbackup which will then backup the other VMs, if so, are there any issues or gotchas I should be aware of?
If it is possible to do this, do I connect the tape library to the VM by editing the VM config file and add the tape library devices as 'phy:/dev/xxx'
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

NDMP is for backing up NAS platforms.
Does your backup software support "LAN-Free" backup ? Typically enterprise backup software like Netbackup, TSM, Networker require a special license/agent that gets loaded on server where you are going to implement LAN-Free backups. Without that software/license servers will be fighting for tape resources and it will be a mess (if it works at all). Also you want to use dedicated HBA or port on dual HBA for tape traffic, do not mix tape and disk traffic on the same HBA/port. In big shops people configure dedicated "tape" VSANs but that would be an overkill for your current environment.

  • Mirroring two ESX Servers with direct attached arrays

Hi, am new to the forum so please forgive if I commit any faux pas
We have two HP DL585 servers (amd opteron) with Direct attached storage arrays (attached via scsi cable) We would like to create a VM environment using ESX 3.5 (this is whats available to us - packaged) We also have all the vmware tools available to us but no other budget to spend on NAS\SAN's
Is there a way to create a mirror between the two machines (and arrays so to speak) so that failover is possible if one goes down or something similar - I think HP storageworks storage mirroring does this but does VMware have anything build in to do the job?
we will be installing the ESX build on the local hard disks(mirrored) and the VM slices on the array (raid 5).  Also the arrays are seen as another local disk on the server. Would Vmotion help or what could we put in place here?. Thanks
Alternatively, what is a good design to follow with the hardware we have? I'm finding it hard to get examples of VMware environments on the web. Thanks in advance

  • 10GB SFP+ Direct Attached cables between 2 servers (crossover, support?)

    Yes,
It is supported. If for some reason it does not work reboot the server. Best would be to get the cables from Intel as well.

I am trying looking everywhere for this answer.
I am speccing out new servers and plan on have a direct connection between 2 of them. They are going to be sharing a lot of data together. I would like to have them connected via 10GB SFP+ adapters using direct attach copper. Basically using the copper as a crossover.
Is this supported? The plan is to have an Intel X520-DA1 single port adapter (PCIe card, not mezzanine) in each server.

  • FAS3220 and FAS2240 direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296UP

    Hello everybody
    I have the following architecture
    1 Cisco Catalyst 6509-E
    1 Cisco Catalyst 3560-x
    2 Fabric Interconnect 6296UP
    1 FAS 3220 (principal storage)
    1 FAS2240 (vault backup)
    1 chasis cisco UCS 5108
5 blade servers Cisco UCS B200M3
    Firmware version: 2.2(3c)
Fabric Interconnect are direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296up and the ports are configurated as FC storage ports
    My question is the following:
Can I zoning fabric interconnect with FAS3220 and FAS2240?
Can I present LUNS of FAS2240 and FAS3220 at the same time on the same boot policy, same san boot policy, and the same organization?
    Thanks for your help

Well, even if that was possible. You're accounting for a critical failure - i.e. a failure of two redundant devices (both 3220s, which I would have assume would be running in a cluster ... or 7mode).
While just upstream you have a single cat 6500 - which would be a single point of failure.
Logic would dictate to account for a single device failure all across the path before looking into multi-device failure.

  • N5K FCoE direct attachment storage conf sample

I am looking for a configuration sample of two N5K's connecting directly to a single storage device (direct attachment) using at least 2 VSANs, looking specifically for the zoning configuration. This will be a temporary solution while MDS ports are not available for the new enviromment. Please, share any simple configuration using the presented scenario: 2 N5K's, 2 EXS hosts (1000V), 2 VSANs, 2 Zones, and single storage (ie.: N-series). Thank you!

    Hello,
For the first question, it is NOT supported.
It might work if we enable default zoning but it is not recommended.

  • How come My Sites can only be created when logged directly onto the Sharepoint Server?

    Hello Community
In Synchronization I populate the container with OU's that contain
Service accounts, user accounts created in the Sharepoint farm and a
domain local group containing a OU with all of the trusted user accounts.
AFter populating the container I perform a User Profile Synchronization.
After the User Profile Synchronization finishes MIISClient shows "success"
including the OU containing the trusted user accounts.
Although I cannot Find all of the trusted users individually in Manage User Profile I
can find them with the peoplepicker when I add them to the web application
and the My Site Host application.
The problem is if I logon directly onto the Sharepoint server with an account created
in the Sharepoint farm I can create a My Site with that account. But if a trusted user
logs onto their computer and tries to create a My Site they get an error stating
    the page can't be displayed.
Even if I click "sign on as a different user" on the trusted user computer
and with a user account that was created in the Sharepoint farm and try to create a
My Site I get the error stating the page can't be displayed.
The reason the page can't be displayed on the trusted users computer is because although
it can access the My Site Host application it cannot access its default.aspx page.
So the question is how come when creating a My Site the My Site Host default.aspx page
cannot be accessed from the trusted user computer but when creating a My Site directly on
the Sharepoint Server the default.aspx page can be accessed and the trusted user and/or the
user account created in the farm can access the default.aspx page and create a My Site?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

What does that mean "trusted user computer"?
How many servers you have in farm?
Are you using a single domain or there are multiple domains involved ?

  • How do I directly install Mountain Lion Server?

I'd like to upgrade my Lion Mac Mini Server to Mountain Lion. Currently I'd have to update it to 10.8 Client, then on the server, install the Server app. Is there anyway to consolidate those two steps into one? I'd like to directly install 10.8 Server so I could perform remote setup of the server in one step. Is that possible?

From what I understand, you would need to update the OS X Lion Server to the 10.8 Client version followed by the OS X 10.8 Server Add-on. I am not too sure if Apple is providing an unified step for this kind of procedure.

    HI,
have a look at tcode cg3z and then FM 'C13Z_FILE_UPLOAD_ASCII'.
What you can do is, first create the file on presentation server using OLE automation, and then using this FM, write the file to Application server

  • My i web version is 2.0.4. Can I publish my i web site directly to a FTP server address?

After Apple stopped hosting with Mobile Me, I moved hosting for my i web built web site to Network solutions. I was told by a Network solutions technician that I can publish an updated iweb site directly to a FTP server address. But I do not see that as an option with my 2.0.4 i web version. Can I update my
version of i web? Or do I need to purchase a later version of i web for this function?

You can open your iWeb 2 site in iWeb 3 and continue as before with the addition of FTP. However you should be able to upload with no problem in CyberDuck or Transmit - both are easy to use and reliable. Note that when you publish to a local folder you should usually upload the contents of the folder to the server, not the folder itself, unless you want the folder name (which must have no spaces in it) to appear in the URL.
Cyberduck is free (donation requested): Transmit is $34 but I think better. You will need the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service.
