Direct connect Apple TV to MBP for secondary display

I have an Apple TV (3rd gen) and a Mid-2010 15" MBP  so I know I can't use airplay mirroring, but I was wondering if there is a way to do this over a wired connection (over usb or ethernet?)

Newer MBPs have HDMI ports.
What ATV generation do you have? What MBP do you have (year/model)? ATVs support Airplay, so using the ATV as an Airplay sink and MBP as Airplay client is still possible.
There are display port-ot-HDMI adapters as well.
Alley_Cat has covered iTunes DRM content, but you can still play non-DRM content via Airplay and HDMI/Component (depending on ATV model).
MBPs  usually have a combo analog/Digital Optical connection that can be hooked up to  a stereo for sound.

  • Connect Apple TV to MBP without a router

Hello Apple TV experts, hope you are having a good day.
My sister is out in the woods in Virginia in her 5th wheel trailer. She has a nice TV/Stereo setup but only gets over the air TV. She has movies on her MacBook Pro and wants to watch on the TV. She has no internet connection nor router.
Can she put in an Apple TV and connect the MBP directly to it without have a network router? Or would she be better off with a hard wire solution?

  • How to connect new Macbook pro 2014 to iMac 2010 for a secondary display

I have a new Macbook Pro 2014 and an old iMac 2010. How can I connect them to have an additional secondary display? I thought I would need a thunderbolt cable with a Thunderbolt to Mini DisplayPort adapter but I can't find that. There's lots of options and I don't understand what would be best.
    Macbook Pro 2014
    iMac 2010
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi Nathaniel,
Thunderbolt is another way of calling it a Mini Displayport, thunderbolt is just faster and has more usage with other products (i.e. hdds, displays etc.) You can hook up a thunderbolt to a mini-display port because both are the same size and serve the same function. Just don't connect anything to the display port on the iMac other than a computer.
    Kind Regards,

  • Can't make direct connection to router

I cannot connect to Internet. The cable Internet router was connected to my Airport Extreme, but connection kept going down. Service guy tested all lines and put in new router with latest firmware. He then bypassed Airport extreme and made direct connection of router to IMac for testing. It worked for about an hour, then connection lost again (link light on router is down-Internet connection tested on IMac, but no connection detected). Put in new Ethernet cable, but no difference. Service guy uses MACS so tested my connection software and settings, but seems okay. Argh! I plug in PC laptop and connection with modem is fine. Service person said he has seen this before, IMac onboard card (ethernet) has failed.
Is this possible? have rebooted, tried diagnostics cd, unplugged/plugged all cables, etc. IMac 2 yrs. old. How is this fixed & is it costly? Thanks.

With Apple Care extended warranty it would be covered. I believe that the Ethernet port is on the logic board so that may need to be replaced. A new logic board is easily US$600.00.
But your explanation is a bit hazy. First the wireless connection had issues and now the Ethernet has issues?

  • Does the power cable from my 24" CinemaDisplay have to connected for the display to work.  I just had it repaired and now it seems to have to be plugged into the laptop  I dont remember it being like that before.

Is the power cable from the display required to be plugged into my MBP for my display to work.  Recently had work done on the display (power supply replaced twice, glass replaced twice).  Also since I got it back from repair  my system goes to sleep sleeps even though I have it set not to.  Frustrated

awesome, so you sound like you know what your going on about. im guessing its a Software fault tbh, because its like the phone is dead.. very upsetting..but with it not being the screen if they dont ask me to replace it and to send it off for repair what can i say as to a loan phone, mind a ease a little bit now i will just now wait for tommorrow to see what happens thank you

  • New RMBP cannot sleep secondary display

    Hi,
    I recently got a new MBP, i'm going from a 2009 17" to a 2012 Retina 15".
My old setup had my 17" connected to my dell 3011U 30" secondary display via a minidisplayport->displayport cable. Worked like a charm, no issues. Could do one display or both, and both screens would sleep appropriately.
I now am trying the same thing with my 15", except of course its ports are thunderbolt but apparently do support the minidisplayport just fine. The secondary monitor works well for everything, except it will never go to sleep/turn off.
I've set up a hot corner for "put display to sleep", and when I do only the 15" screen sleeps, my 3011U just stays on in the last frame it was in.
Screen saver seems to work on both screens, but when the time comes to sleep the monitor will remain on (although some times there is no content in it - but it definitely is not asleep).
Any thoughts? Thunderbolt problem? The fact that this worked perfectly on another laptop indicates to me an issue with the new stuff.
    Thanks!
    Bob

This problem ended up going away on its own. I went to call apple care, and the site said bring it in for a genius appointment. I proctrastinated for a few days, and now it appears the monitor is turning off exactly as expected.

  • Apple TV and Airport Extreme, Direct connection vs. 10/100 Switch

I have an Apple TV currently connected directly to my Airport Extreme by Ethernet, but I also need to connect my Satelite DVR to my Broadband connection. Will I suffer much if I add a 10/100 switch in my entertainment center and then run that to the Airport Extreme? Should I just run the Apple TV via wi-fi? I can't afford to buy a new switch that can do Gigabit, so I have to do the best with what I have. any suggestions?

Ethernet is efficient and assuming you have no problems you should get close to the 100Mbps, neither your tv or DVR should require any more than 5 Mbps for live streaming although each may well use up to around 15 Mbps when syncing/transfering/copying content.
I believe you should be just fine with 100 ethernet, indeed you'll probably be better than going wi-fi.

  • Will Apple watch connect to speed cadence sensor for bicycles

Will the Apple watch connect directly to a Bluetooth speed cadence sensor, or Ant+ for use with a bike, or will it use the iPhone to do this and show the reading through the watch?

I doubt that any of the users in this user-to-user forum can answer that. Apple has a hotline for  Watch questions; that's probably where you will get the best answer.

  • How to connect apple tv directly to computer using ethernet

ok so im trying to figure out a way to plug in the Apple TV directly to my computers Ethernet port for direct streaming.  I am not allowed to use a router(College) so the only way i can possibly hook the Apple tv is directly through my computer ethernet.  My desktop has wireless so i dont need the port for internet.  I understand i wont have access to youtube or other internet content..thats fine.  Streaming is more important to me then that stuff.
I have a PC desktop.  Any and all advice would be helpful.  Im assuming there is some setting on the desktop in order for me to tell the computer that the ethernet port is for streaming.
    Thanks,

Just use a switch or hub

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • TS1398 I have an iPad mini, because of my work network firewalls I am not able to use the airprint function to print. I was told you can direct connect to a printer. I am not sure how as I have not seen any cables for a lightning connection to a printer c

I have an iPad mini, I am connected to my work wireless connection. My printer also is on the same wireless network, however I am not able to print to my airprint enabled printer through this wireless connection. Is there a way to direct connect to the printer via a cable ?
I am missing something here on the connection. I am thinking possibly a firewall here at work will not allow me to use the airprint function. Help ?

There is no support for wired printing.
It is probably a firewall issue, possibly where all inbound communications are blocked. Since you're at work, I'd call your work IT department and find out from them what you can/can't do.

  • Connected Apple TV Box tonight and it said it needed an update.  I ran the update, and it worked for a few minutes.  Then all of a sudden, a screen popped up showing that I needed to connect via USB plug to my MacBook Air to connect to iTunes.  Why??

I conneced the Apple TV and it worked fine at first.  It has worked well for some time.  We are using them in our school this year, as well as converting to all apple products.  I have been able to pull up my computer screen through Apple TV onto our projectors.  However, tonight when I started apple TV, the mirroring icon came up, and everything seemed fine.  Then a message came up that the Apple TV Box needed an update.  I clicked on the button to run it now, and it seemed fine.  The mirroring worked for about 5 minutes after the update, then I got a screen that had a picture of the Apple TV Box and a USB cord directed toward a picture of the iTunes icon.  The light on the frontof the component flashed, and I couldn't go to the menu at all.  I wouldn't do anything.  I no longer cold see the Airplay/mirroring icon on my computer either.  I tried to shut everything off and reboot the computer and the Apple TV box.  However, none of this worked.
Any suggestions???  I'm a high school football coach, and this is how our team will watch film this year.  I really need to get this rectified by the end of the week, as our team will go into camp for the next two weeks.

    Hello Philly,
I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?)  touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

  • What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)

I feel like I should know the answer to this. I can't believe it is a hard question.
What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)
    Easy? Right?
Just plug my iphone in to a mac and copy a photo from the mac to my iphone.
I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.

iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

  • HT201371 More Apple id's with the same Touch ID possible? I have two Apple ID's, one for buying apps since the first iPhone and later, one for iCloud. Now with my new iPhone 5s, after installation Touch ID is connected to the iCloud one.

I have 2 Apple ID"s, one for buying app's (since the first iPhone) in the store and another one for operating with iCloud things. Now, after installation/activation of my new iPhone 5s, the Touch ID is connected to the iCloud world. Conclusion, if I like to buy a new app. I still have to fill in the password for the other Apple ID. In the past I asked Apple to may join both, but that seems to be impossible.
    Anyone a solution?

I am logged into the same things on both my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, except for mail. I use a gmail IMAP account and everything there already works on both machines. The iCloud account on my iPhone uses one Apple ID and the one on the Mac uses the second Apple ID.
