Direct Connect OSPF and BGP AWS failover setup

Hi,
We recently installed AWS Direct Connect which was successful but now we are looking at the best way to  automatically fail over if our Direct Connect fails to route via our back VPN.
The setup
Cisco 6500 distributes routes via OSPF internally to all production environments with one area set.
A second Cisco 2901 was installed to support the AWS Direct Connect which uses BGP with a single ASN. This router is connected to the Cisco 6500 and now within the OSPF area.  Static routes exist to the Cisco 2901 currently which unless we physically detach from the network fail over wont work.
What we want to achieve
The Cisco 2901 Direct Connect to be the default AWS route until we have a link issue or alike and dynamically fail over to our VPN via the firewall to AWS.  What we are confused is do we advertise these BGP routes within OSPF or should we setup BGP on the Cisco 6500?
I appreciate your time.

  • Question about network statement in OSPF and BGP

The network statements in OSPF and BGP can be used to advertise networks. But I'm not clear under what circumstances would make more sense to use network statements to advertise a network than by using other methods to have the network learned by other routers.
Here is an example: assume I'm running BGP on router A. I want to advertise network 10.1.1.0/24 to other BGP peers. I have a OSPF route for this network. I can do 2 things: one is to use "network 10.1.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0", the other is to do "redistribute OSPF ... route-map OSPF-INTO-BGP", and create a prefix list to permit 10.1.1.0/24.
Both would work to have this network learned by other BGP peers. But which is better for what purpose?
    Thanks a lot
    Gary

    Hi Gary,
There is one little difference between the use of the two approaches - the route injected into BGP by using a network statement will carry an Origin attribute of IGP, whereas the route injected using redistribution will have an Origin attribute of Incomplete. Now, that is not a huge issue since you can always change that whatever value you desire both with the use of the network statement and redistribution. The important thing, however, is that in the BGP best path selection process, the Origin attribute comparison is fairly high up and will prefer a route with the attribute of IGP.
Apart from that, there is absolutely no difference between using the network statement and using redistribution with a route-map that matches exactly on the same route that you would have specified with the network statement.
I guess one advantage of using the redistribute approach is that it does not clutter up the BGP config. If you wish to add more routes, you simply add them to the prefix list so that you don't really touch the BGP config portion at all..
Hope that helps - pls do remember to rate posts that help.

  • Small configure help please? I have 3 300-28 switches, I want to connect them and avoid stp (stp setup)

    HI!
I have a small network. I have 3 300-28 cisco switches. I already connected my 3 servers  and clients with the switch 1 and now I want to add more clients and I need to add my other two switches in the network. Please guide me with the simple configuration So I can connect them all and avoid loop (stp). Thanks

    Hi Nagaraja Thanthry!
Thanks for your reply. I am implementing it tomorrow. By just conecting the switches together at trunk ports  will there be no loop? I don't want my network chowk. I hope it will work well. I might need further help, please reply.
    1. I will do setting on all switches. Assign IP addresses to switches (to Vlan 1 default).
    2. Set one port (e.g 28) as trunk and all others as Access on all three switches.
    3. Then I will connect the switches with each other at trunk ports. Hope there will be no loop in this setting.
    4. Do I need to set any setting for stp in switches ?
Please reply one by one thanks.
    I am using 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 IP range.
    Best Regards,

  • SMB Direct connect Issues and error -36 (work around?)

I use the SMB command to connect from a Imac, to a Windows 7 machine.   Typically on a fresh restart of both machines the connection would be quick and fast transfer speeds.   However after a while I would get disconnected and after logging back in, would get slow connections and typically get an error -36 when trying to transfer bigger files.     What I did notice was that when the Windows machine would go to sleep, and come back online,  these symptoms would occur.
What I decided to do, was turn off any type of sleep mode and power saving options on the network device. for the windows machine.   As naturally I would still get disconnected every once in a while,  once I connect I do not have anymore issues.    This has worked now for the last couple of days, so I assume I can consider this a work around.
It seems that if the SMB connection gets disconnected from the other computer, the Mac will start giving errors.    I am not sure if this is really the mac issue, but this has only happened when I updated to Yosemite.
Let me know if anyone else has this problem, and has success with this solution.

If your MacBook is using wifi, connect your ATV to it using an Ethernet cable and turn on Internet sharing in the Sharing section of the System Preferences for the Ethernet NIC in the MacBook, then set up the ATV for a TCP/IP connection in the General -> Network section of the ATV Settings menu.

  • How to switch b/t wireless & direct connection

My Ibook is happily printing wirelessly to a Canon Pixma ip3000 but I can not access the printer utility. I was going to try connecting directly into my Ibook's USB but I'm not sure how to make the switch. Just plugging it in doesn't work. Is there some setting I have to change if it was previously using Airport? I just want the direct connection occasionally and I do want to mess up my Airport connection so I can go back when I'm done.
    Christy

Add the printer twice in the Printer Setup Utility, once as the Airport printer and once as a USB printer.
Then the utility should work when you are plugged in via USB.

  • Question about OSPF to BGP redistribution

I have some static routes on a router where OSPF and BGP are also running. I have redistributed the static routes into OSPF (showing in OSPF database). I also want to have the static routes into the BGP routing table. Understand this can be done by using a prefix list permiting all the static routes, however I was thinking a simpler way just redistributing whatever is in the OSPF routing tabel into BGP (permit 0.0.0.0/0 le 32).
My question is if OSPF really redistributes those routes. Those routes are shown as "static" in "sh ip route" even though they are also in OSPF database. I have heard that OSPF only redistributes the routes showing as "OSPF routes", not what's in its database.
    Thanks for any help.
    Gary

    Hi Gary,
The thing to understand here is that the use of redistribution does not change anything in the routing table of the router on which you are configuring it.
As you have observed, static routes do not become OSPF routes when you redistribute them into OSPF. This can be generalised to the following: when you redistribute protoclol1 into protocol2, the router will scan the routing table for routes installed by protocol1 and will then do one of the following, depending on the protocol it is being redistributed into:
    - if it is a Link state protocol like OSPF, it will originate LSAs appropriate to the route being redistributed. These LSAs will be subsequently flooded to other routers which will install them as routes in their routing table. The only change on the redistributing router is the installation of additional LSAs; the routing table does not change
    - if it is a distance vector protocol like IGRP, the router will take the protocol1 routes and advertise them via IGRP update packets every time an update packet is sent. Once again, there is no change on the routing table of the redistributing router.
Note the other important point: when redistributing is carried out, the only routes that are redistributed are those that are in the routing table and installed there by the source protocol, which could be quite different to the contents of link-state databases.
    Hope that helps.

    hi  Maximilian Schojohann..
First i would like to Thank you for showing  interest in solving my issue...After some research i found that desabling the " IP CEF" will solve the issue...when i desable i was able to communicate success fully with the router lan..But when i desable " IP CEF "  Router cpu processer goes to 99% and hangs...
In the output of " sh process cpu" it shows 65% of utilization from "IP INPUT"
so plz give me an alternate solution ....thanks in advance....

  • I have a time capsule connected directly to fiber connection. I have connected a windows server directly to TC and configured it for remote desktop connection. From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home. What config I need on TC?

I have a time capsule directly connected to fibre optic point out. All pcs and macs are connected wirelessly to the internet. I have connected a windows server pc to TC. When configured for Remote desktop connection, I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet. I guess I need to change some settings in TC to get some ip adress for the remote desktop connection from my home. Anyone who can help me out? Appreciate it.
    Narmin

I am a little lost now.. I have read again your title and your first post.. and they seem inconsistent.
    In the title you state.
From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home.
Interanet is not a word I know.. I assumed intranet...are you talking about internet or intranet? And just to be clear say WAN or LAN.. !! Is your home part of the interanet??
In the first post you state,
I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet.
Now this is more normal.. the issue is not in the home at all, it is accessible from there but fails from internet. If this is correct, then you can do a few obvious things to determine where the problem is.
But first I need to know are you actually testing from a different internet connection to your home lan.. you are not just trying the public IP from inside the LAN as that will fail due to the TC not doing NAT Loopback.
I am also assuming the TC is the only router in the network, and has the public IP on the WAN interface.
And I am also assuming you have turned on the ping responder and you can actually ping your public ip from the internet and get a response. This helps no end in figuring out where there are issues. Strange but I have no idea if there is a ping responder in the TC WAN so you might need to forward that as well. Also if you have a dynamic public ip address are you using dyndns or no-ip or some other service to connect.
    1. Test bypassing the TC.. plug the internet connection straight into the windows server,, and test if you have access. If yes, the TC is the problem.. if not, your setup on the windows server is wrong.. look at firewall in particular.
    2. Assuming from test 1 the TC is the problem, Post the screen shots of the port forwarding setup for us to look at.. that is by far the easiest way to check it out.
There are lots of references to port forwarding in the TC.. eg
    http://must-know-mac.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-port-forward-time-capsule.html
The things that generally go wrong are firewall on the computer that is accepting the port.
The ISP doesn't allow connections on a particular port. (not likely in your case)
The router is behind another router.. double NAT will kill any port forward.
Upnp has already allocated a port.. not an issue as TC doesn't use upnp although a reboot of everything after you set port forwards is well worth it.. amazing how things don't stick properly without a reboot.
IP on the receiving device is not static and so changes.
Not enough or right type of ports are opened. This is always messier than it looks as one port is often not enough for two way communications.

  • Direct connect macbook air and time machine

Any idea how to direct connect my macbook air with my time machine?
I am wanting to do a large restore from my old mb to my new air. This would take 18+hours over my network.
Few tidbits: my time machine isn't the newest version so it doesn't have a thunderbolt port. One usb and several ethernets.

Complete an Time Machine backup of ypur old machine to an external USB hard disk
If the Air is "brand new", you are in luck. Use Setup Asistant on the very first Boot. Upon that boot, the system will aks if you would like to transfer files, applications and settings from another computer. You would then attach your USB disk, the Time Machine Backup, and direct the sytem to import all the information from the TM backup.
Here is everything you need to know, and more.

  • Redundancy and Failover setup for 2 MPLS link with 2 different countries

    Hi Sir/Madam,
We have 2 MPLS link and both links are active (from COUNTRY A to COUNTRY B) and we also have 2 partners who are located in COUNTRY B with same building but with different offices and each partner will be using each MPLS link.  For example, PARTNER A will use the 1st MPLS link and PARTNER B will use the 2nd MPLS link and we want to have a failover setup (please see sample design below).  What is the best solution for COUNTRY A and B to have a full redundancy and failover setup/network?
Any recommendation and sample configuration will be a big help for me.   Your feedback is highly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,

MPLS links, eh.  You mean your MPLS facing ports have actual MPLS labels?  Or do you mean your WAN links are running across a MPLS network, but the handoff isn't MPLS?
Country A's two routers are your company's devices?  Do you have interior connectivity between them?
Country B's two routers - do they or can they have interior connectivity?

  • New ARIN Block Transition and BGP Setup

    Hello all,
First post on the forum so I bear with me.  I am still young in my carrier and have not worked with BGP on a professional level.
We received a new IP Address block from ARIN and need to transition to it.  The boss does not want to do a hard cut over but a phased migration instead.  I need to know if this is possible and any configuration guides that might be handy.
Our current IP block is a /26 given to us by our ISP routing protocols are all handed by them we just use gateway of last resort/static routing.
Is it possible to use the same physical link but use sub-interfaces in order to keep our current setup but allow for setup of BGP and the new ARIN block over the same physical interface up to the ISP?
Has anyone transitioned this way before? Or know of any guides that might help me out in the configuration of something like this.  We are still in the planing phase and I just need to know if this is a viable solution or do we get another ISP (which is going to happen anyway eventually) and migrate over external services that way.
    Thank you,
    Jon

    Jon
Am I correct in understanding that you have a single router connecting to a single ISP for Internet connectivity? And that the ISP handles routing to you and you have static routes pointing to the ISP? And that you now have been assigned your own block of addresses?
If I have understood correctly then I will suggest to you that you may not need to use BGP as you implement the new address block. I would suggest that you could use this approach:
    - configure the new address block inside your network. Ask your ISP to route to these addresses over the existing connection (the ISP should be able to establish a static route for this block in their routing logic).
    - your ISP might ask you to advertise the address block to them. In that case you may need to run a dynamic routing protocol between your router and the ISP. Ask the ISP what routing protocol they support. BGP is probably one alternative but the ISP may have other routing protocols that they support for customer connections.

  • Mix settop box and direct connection to tv

I have just this week had FIOS installed with 1 digital lcd tv plus hd settop box. I expect to add another tv in the near future buy had thought that I might simply connect the coax directly to the new digital ready tv without a box to receive just the unencrypted channels. But, with the current setup I bypassed the settop box and connected the coax cable directly to my current tv (which has both digital & analog tuners & can receiver over-the-air channels well from rabbit ears). To my surprise (& disappointment) the tv set does not receive any signal.
Is this what happens when your service includes a settop box? Is it really so that you cannot have one set connected via a verizon box and another directly connected? Or am I do something stupid and missing some simple step?
    Any/all comments/suggestons welcome.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK, thanks. But the set (vizio sv470xvt) has a qam tuner builtin Also analog (ntsc?) and atsc. The literature with it says it can receive cable channels without a box; it is not cablecard ready so presumably that's not an issue. I've searched on the web and all sites I've found with info confirm that. There is another thread (started earlier than this one, but I did't see it until later) in which many people say that they've had real problems with getting the unencrypted cahnnels; it appears that Verizon moves them around?!
I've tried several times both using the search menu and manually entering some (although not a lot) of some channels. The highest channel number allowed is 135; could that be a problem?
I_Am_The_Stig: your message came in after I started this but my set has options to search for analog/digital or either alone (I've tried both combined & digital only) but nor a 'cable'setting. Since the literature with the set claims it can receive cable signals I would assume it searches with all tuners. But still I don't get any channels found.

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

To sync photos from a Mac or Windows PC to your device using photo applications
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
In iTunes, select your device's icon in the Devices list on the left.
    Click the Photos tab.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Note: Some versions of Photoshop Album and Photoshop Elements don't support collections. You can still use them to sync all your photos.
If you want to sync all your photos, enable the option for "All photos, albums, events, and faces." If you want to sync photos from only some albums, events, or faces, enable the option for "Selected albums, events, and faces" and then select the albums you want. If syncing on a Mac with iPhoto version 6.0.6 or later, you may enable the option to "Include videos" to sync videos directly from iPhoto to your device. (Requires iOS 3.0 or later).
    Click Apply.
To sync photos from a folder on your hard disk to your device
Drag the images you want into a folder on your computer. If you want images to appear in separate photo albums on your device, create folders inside the main folder and drag images into the new folders.

  • Direct Connection ABAP Proxy and Java Proxy possible ????

    Hi Folks ,
As i read as direct connection possible between 2 SAP systems only ..
and also i read as WS Direct Connection u2013 (Java) ..
What it means ?? is it ABAP Proxy to Java Proxy using Direct connection ??  Like Java Client Proxy and ABAP Server proxy
I am not clear on this.. Could you please explain or help me on this . ??
    Siva..

    Hi ,
+You can do both for java proxies as well Abap proxies.+
    As per the following points
    1. Point-to-point connection is a new capability available with SAP NW PI 7.1. It allows applications or systems to send messages using WS-RM without going through a middleware, e.g. PI, but still using a centralized tool to design and
configure the interfaces and connection properties.
    2. SAP XI 3.0/PI 7.00 or higher releases can be licensed based on the total volume of messages in
gigabytes (GB) that is processed per month. The size of the payload is determined in the integration
server. The information is then aggregated according to sender and receiver system.
    Question :
    1. If Message exchange between 2 SAP applications using direct connection .. Then dont we need to consider about licencing cost for volume of messages per month ?
    2. So if i use ABAP Client Proxy to Java Server proxy  scenario.. can i use direct connection  ? Eg., SAP ECC to java application ?
In both the cases PI Runtime is not required  .. Am i right ?
    Please clarify..
    Siva..
