Direct connect to UCS FI from EMC VNX 5300

Hi,
I'm looking for any configuration recommendations or best practices for configuring a VNX 5300 unified for direct connect to UCS Fabric Interconnects.
The direct connect wil be 10GB on both the file and block side.
Are their any guides or recommendations anyone may have?
I've looked and cannot find much.

Hi Manuel,
Two things:
1) Take a look at the following matrix for the supported version
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/Matrix8.html
2) Currently the direct attch FC is supported under a restricted to topologies in which the zoning  database is provided from an upstream Cisco MDS 9000 switch or Nexus  5000 or 5500 switch. Hence you would still have to conenct an MDS or a N5K to the FIs for the zoning info.

  • UCS boot from EMC VNX

    Hello folks,
I am booting a couple of UCS servers (Redhat) from EMC VNX. Everything seems to be working fine, i can remove zones on one fabric, i can remove all zones to SPA or all zones to SPB ...PowerPath is doing its thing and the system keep running. The other day we did VNX firmware upgrade and both servers panic and rebooted each time SPA or SPB got rebooted.  Any idea what could be wrong, boot profile config attached.
    Thank you
    @dynamoxxx

It isn't the boot profile issue,  The server only looks that for trying to figure out where to boot from SAN. I'm not sure if it is multipath driver config or zone issuing or maybe an OS config?

  • Monitoring for Cisco UCS/Cisco Catalyst/EMC VNX/VMware environment

    hi
I am not sure whether this is the right place for this post, but I am giving it a shot anyway.
I am looking for a monitoring solution for a Cisco UCS/Cisco Catalyst/EMC VNX/VMware environment and I cannot seem to find 1 product that does it all.
Do any of you Guys have experience with a such product?
    thanks...

I have used PRTG for Cisco Routers/Switch, Vmware  and with Cisco UCS. As for the storage part I'm not sure.
I recommend prtg because its user friendly and web based management.

  • Cisco MDS 9148 compatibity with EMC VNX 5300

    Hi Cisco ,
We have 2 MDS 9148 switches running on NX-OS 5.0(1a). These switches are connected to EMC VNX 5300 currently running on 05.31 version.
We are planning to upgrade both Switches and VNX.
So my query to you guys is, I am thinking to upgrade Switch to NX-OS 5.2(8c). Will this 5.2(8c) support the VNX 5300 05.32 version.
    Please suggest.

  • NetApp direct connect to UCS best practices

    Folks,
I have installed many FlexPods this year but all involved either Nexus 5Ks or 7Ks with vPC. This protects the NFS LUN connections from both network outages or UCSM FIM outages. What is not clear to me is the best practice on connecting a NetApp directly to the UCS via applaince ports. Appliance ports seem like a great idea but they seem to ass issues to designs, both in VMware and the network.
Does anyone have a configuration example on both the NetApp, UCS & Vmware side?
I thought I would ask the group their opinion.
    Cheers,
    David Jarzynka

    Hi David
Can you clarify your last posting a little bit.
I never installed direct attached NetApp Storage to the UCS as well.
One drawback i see is, if you have your NetApp System in active/standby mode connected to the FI, then for example all Servers connect through FI A to the NetApp System (NIC with VMKernel for all Server active on FI A). If the NetApp Link fails and switches over to standby link on Fabric B all the Traffic will go form Server to FI A to Uplink Switch to FI B and then to the NetApp System - because the Server is not aware that the NetApp System did a failover. So not all companies will have 10G Uplink Switches which will cause a bottleneck in that case.
What other things do you see? I agree completely with you - all say is a wonderful feature on the slides - but i don't think it's that smart in practise?
    Thanks for a short replay.
    Cheers

  • Connectivity Issue between Nexus 5548 to VNX 5300

    Hi All,
I am doing a lab setup where i want to connect Nexus 5548 UP to VNX 5300 storage directly. The physical connectivity is established between switch and storage but On Nexus the status of the port shows "linkFailure". I tried matching the port mode (like Auto, F) and speed but the port always shows "linkFailure".
The connectivity from Nexus to VNX is FC.
Anyone can suggest the root cause or any troubleshooting steps.
    Regards,
    Abhilash

LinkFailure might be a GUI status.
    show interface fcx/y might say,
    Link failure or not connected
The physical layer link is not operational.
This means the switch is not detecting light, so the phyiscal layer is the cable and lasers (sfp's, HBAs or whatever adapter the VNX uses).  It could mean you need to turn the interfaace up from the vnx side.

  • Cisco Twinax Cables Compatibiltiy with EMC VNX/VNXe

    Hi,
I would like to know about Cisco Twinax Cables Compatibiltiy with EMC VNX/VNXe series storage - for connectivity between UCS Fabric Interconnect and EMC VNX/VNXe.
Are the following Cisco Twinax Cables compatible with EMC's VNX and VNXe serie platforms:
    SFP-H10GB-CU1M= 1-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-CU3M= 3-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-CU5M= 5-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-ACU7M= 7-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, active
    SFP-H10GB-ACU10M= 10-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, active
    Kindly advice. Thanks.

    Hi,
I'd like to confirm you, that passive assembly is supported. Haven't tried the actives one yet.
    I'm using UCS-B200 M3, and EMC VNX 5300.
the EMC VNX5300 (Block Level) connected using 2 type of media. Copper (SFP-H10GB-CU5M= 5-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive) and Fiber Channel 8 GB directly info Fabric Interconnect 6248 ports.
For old server the connection is via iSCSI 10GB Copper. and for UCS-B200 M3 is via FC 8GB.
All my configuration is running well.
    Hope thats helped.
    Thanks,
    Pieter

  • Connectivity between UCS 6249 - UCS 6248 Switches and 10GB iscsi on EMC Storage - VNXe 3200

    Hi
    I am trying to check VNXe 3200 Connectivity with SFP+ ( Cisco UCS 6249 - UCS 6248 Switches )
will the 10 GB iscsi fiber / Copper connect directly to the UCS 6248 and what is the type of Cables ?
will SFP and SFP+ connect to each other or that will cause some issues?
i tried to search the EMC side but getting difficulty to get the Document showing the Comparability but expecting soon so wanted to check from Cisco side
I know this is the Guide to refer to

but please help me finding answers
    Thanks

    Hi Sami
    https://community.emc.com/message/841141#841141
    has the answer
EMC does not support Passive Twinaxial cables in an iSCSI or FCOE environment.
EMC only supports Active Twinaxial cables in an iSCSI or FCOE environment.
We currently support EMC, Brocade and Cisco cables.
SFP-H10GB-ACU7M and SFP-H10GB-ACU10M are active twinax cables
    see http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/10GE_Tx_Matrix.html

  • What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)

I feel like I should know the answer to this. I can't believe it is a hard question.
What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)
    Easy? Right?
Just plug my iphone in to a mac and copy a photo from the mac to my iphone.
I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.

iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

  • Moving Time Machine Drive from Direct Connect to Network Share

I have a 1 TB external USB 2 drive I use for my Time Machine backup. I'd like to move that drive to a file server and continue backing up to it. The problem appears to be that when backing up to the drive as a network volume, Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the backup and not use the existing TM backup folder on the drive.
Is it possible to migrate a Time Machine drive from direct connect to network while preserving the backed up data? Thanks!

Depending on what "file server" you're using, that may or may not work reliably. Here's the criteria they must meet: Disks that can be used with Time Machine. And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.

    That's correct.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • Limitations associated with Direct Connecting arrays to UCS FIs.

I understand that in order to direct connect an array to UCS, the FIs have to be put into Switch mode(NPIV).  But once the FI's are in Switch Mode, is it impossible to attach other SAN switches to the fabric interconnects?
It is my understanding that you could accomplish this because it wouldn't be much different then an extended SAN fabric in which an array's traffic would have to travel through 2 FC switches to arrive at a host.  But perhaps I'm missing something.
    Thanks in advance.

You can have directly attached storage and FC switches at the same time, in fact until recently it was required since UCS did not do zoning.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/servers-unified-computing/ucs-infrastructure-ucs-manager-software/116082-config-ucs-das-00.html
The questions is whether you really want to do it that way, I think for 95% of deployments, if not more, end host mode is recommended.
If you're already planning to attach FC switches, best to place storage on them.
Have a look at FlexPod (of Vblock) designs.
