Direct Link to SpeedGrade disables GPU in CC2014.2

Bug as noted in the other thread, but ... refined and clarified. Working in a Direct Link process, I cannot do anything whatever to the simplest sequence in Sg without an immediate notice that "There are insufficient Video Resources" and Sg is disabling GPU acceleration. This is, again, after it was using less than 3% of the GPU and only around 278Mb of vRAM. It then runs slow as molasses.
If I just try to keep working, the time lag between clicking anything and response of the program continually slows ... starts at a couple seconds of lag, soon gets to 30 seconds between my action and its reaction. Totally unusable.
I can restart and re-enable GPU ... but it will just keep doing the same thing.
The only thing that gets me semi-back in operation is to simply go to the Pref's panel, re-set to "Use GPU accel" but WITHOUT re-starting. It will run semi so-so ... far faster than if I don't do this and simply try to keep working (as noted above) BUT ... definitely slower than it did on CC, or CC2014, through any of their minor builds.
I've run CC Cleaner and wiped both PrPro & Sg ... downloaded fresh & re-installed. Exactly the same behavior.

I posted this earlier in a the creative cloud forum with no responses.  I'll post it here to see what you guys think about it:
I'm not too familiar with the forums at this point, although I have been using them for a few months to receive some great information.  However, I've got some good ideas, and perhaps you'll think of them as good ideas too.
From what I understand, at the moment, there's no way to tell what problems may exist in any updated versions of the Adobe CC software.  For example, when recently updating to the newest version of Adobe SpeedGrade, I and many other people are having many troubles getting it to use the GPU.  Because of this, it is assumed to be a software issue that we all just have to deal with.  For the majority of us, uninstalling this version, removing ALL of its remnants (which can be important when using SSDs) and re-installing to the previous, working version can be a huge hassle, especially when the permission of an administrator (such as for those who do this for a living in the workplace) is required to do so.  This is what I have to say:
At the moment, is there any way to know (by personal experience, not what Adobe claims to have fixed and updated) what problems and other changes may exist in the updated software without scouring each forum's posts for each CC application? If not, I propose creating a collective area in which people can list differences they've noticed throughout the newest version of the software and problems they may have experienced with it.
So by this point, you're probably considering why anybody should do this.  Here are the reasons that I think that this would be a huge benefit to everybody:
People, in advance, could look at the collective experiences of those daring enough to update to the newer versions.  This would help because:
Now they can decide, for themselves, whether or not to update (rather than find out the hard way since no information regarding software bugs about the newer versions were made easily available).
Remember, not all of us have an easy time uninstalling and re-installing things when parts of the new program no longer work. If there was one forum, or area, or whatever it takes, where people could post all of their experiences with any of the newest versions of the Adobe CC software, I feel that it would be a huge benefit to all of us.  Of course, people would have to be daring in the first place to try the newest software and then return to post about it, but for those of us who are not fortunate enough to do so, this would greatly help.  See, I'm stuck doing horrible color grading with SpeedGrade despite having two GTX 970s in this machine and am unable to turn back to a previous version (at least, it would make more sense for me to wait until a newer version of all the software comes out considering my employer).
Let me know what you guys think about this idea, who I should talk to in order to make it a reality, or (most importantly) if an area on these forums already exists and I'm completely unaware of it.

  • The direct link to speedgrade is desable on premiere pro cc v7.2.2

Mi direct link to speedgrade is desable on premiere pro cc v7.2.2, and the return from speedgrade to premiere is also desable. How can I fixet.
    Thanks

For the Direct Link PrPro/Sg/PrPro to work, both PrPro & Sg need to be "equivalent" builds. If one is newer than the other, it's not happening. Unfortunately, the build numbers don't completely naturally "correlate", so i don't recall which Sg build you need to have with the CC7.2.2 PrPro. But this could easily be the problem.
Also, occasionally, they don't "see" each other, and one or both may need a re-install or at least a dumping of the preference files.

  • Vignette in Speedgrade CC not showing up in Premiere CC via Direct Link

I used the Direct Link to SpeedGrade and did some color correction on some ProRes MOV files and added another Primary color correction with a vignette. When back in Premiere, the color corrections are fine but the vignette doesn't show up. Also, the vignette doesn't show up where the widget is placed. I have to move the mask widget to the left of the frame for the vignette circle to be in the center of the frame.

The footage is a 2K ProRes MOV scaled down. The vignette is still not showing up on the adjustment layer in Pr.
The weird thing is, in SpeedGrade, the vignette widget doesn't line up correctly on screen. I have to shift it way to the left out of frame for the vignette to line up correctly. Any ideas why this is happening? The Pr comp size is 640x640. Maybe that is effecting the vignette.

  • Direct link speedgrade to Premiere

    Hello,
My direct link Premiere to Seedgrade works but not the reverse. I can export my corrections from SpeedGrade in .mov but i can not transfer them to Premiere. I have Premiere CS6 and Speedgrade CC 2014 (trial version).
How can I activate the direct link in Speedgrade?
    Thanks for your help!
    Bas

Premiere Pro CS6 send project to SpeedGrade CS6 and renders out of SpeedGrade, doesn't link back to PP CS6 as far as I remember.
PP CC Direct Links to Speedgrade CC and links back to PP CC.
So, if you are in PP CS6 and sending project to Speedgrade CC, wow, and I would not think it would link back.
If you want PP and SpeedGrade to link back and forth, update your PP to same version of SpeedGrade (past CS6 and into CC).

  • Can't select direct link to adobe speedgrade

I cannot select the direct link to adobe speed grade option in premiere

Should be an easy fix! Make sure the Timeline is active before Direct Link to SpeedGrade
Just click in the timeline in Premiere Pro.If it has a yellow line around the Timeline panel, it's active.

  • Does Direct Link from PP to SG actually work??  Does SG actually work???

I have been hassling with this all day.... the project will go over to SG (via Direct link), and I start grading and about after 30-40 mins it will just crash (SG actually closes down)... there is no file / no save as far as I can tell... so all the work I did is lost (and this has happened 3 times now).  It is a short 5 min EPK with nothing heavy in the way of transistions.  So I read about DIRECT LINKS problems and then tried the EDL method of bringing it over, consolidated to 1 video track as it is limited too (I honestly CANNOT believe this) who edits on 1 video track?  This is ridiculious!!  But anyway, I get the big red square with all kinds of "not supported" problems and my EDL never actually gets loaded.  VERY FRUSTRATED... how am I ever going to even start thinking about grading a 90 min feature if I can't get a 5 min EPK to WORK.  So far I am NOT IMPRESSED with SG.... which stinks after I have spent days in tutorials learning the program!   Anyone actually ever use SG for a real project before???

    Allent,
In direct-link mode, Speedgrade is using a PrPro project file directly ... and is NOT allowed to "touch" that file until you specifically tell it to go back to PrPro. That's a part that is oft mis-understood. It has a few major things to "know" or you'll get frustrated.
First, as you've discovered, there is  NO auto-save while working on a direct-linked project in EITHER PrPro or Sg. So ... if you're over in Sg working for more than a few minutes, it is wise to manually save, perhaps adding an iterative letter/number, so that you've got your work to that point protected in case of crash.
Second ... as Sg is locked out of changing the timeline of a  PrPro project file in any way, you cannot add a grading layer to the timeline from Sg in a direct-link session. So ... one needs to create any additional/supplemental grading layers one will need in Sg BEFORE leaving PrPro, by putting "adjustment layers" over the sequence or specific clips you'll want to use a separate grading layer on within Sg.
Third ... another hitch some people have been befuddled by is that when you first apply a Lumetri "look" or a LUT, it's in "preview" mode. You need to hit enter or a couple other things that Sg takes as "accepting" that look/LUT permanently before going back to PrPro or that effect doesn't "save" to the project.
So ... any timeline changes have to be done in PrPro. Corrections/grading done in Sg. Saving a file under work in a direct-link Sg session is manual ... and wise. And yes, this is now suited for working while editing, taking over sub-sequences perhaps is a way to look at it? There are some changes in workflow ... but as you get used to them, it is so much simpler than working edl's or DPX or those sorts of things. And quicker.

  • 7.1 Direct Link crash every time

    Mac 4,1
    OS 10.8.2
    AJA LHi card installed
Created a new project in Premiere 7.1, added a 10 second ProRes clip to timeline - can't get it to direct link with Speedgrade without a crash.  Also tried with a Cinema DNGclip.
Since I see some staff members active on the boards today - maybe they have an idea?  Thanks!
Also - not sure if it is relevant - but I noticed that when I tell Premiere to send to Speedgrade, it askes if I want to save...I click OK - then Premiere stays open and I get the welcome screen again  (where I can open recent projects.)  Is that normal behavior?
EDIT: It isn't Direct Link - I can't even open SG directly on its own. As soon as I get to the welcome screen asking to open project, it crashes.

  • Speed Grade CC missing features when Direct Link with Premiere CC

I'm new to speed grade, so I am unclear as to what the issue might be:
When I direct Link from Premiere Speed Grade does not behave the way I would expect
I cannot select any tab other than "Look"
I cannot toggle the 'visibility' of layers
I can create adjustment layers, but they have no effect on the sequence.
I wish to grade my whole sequence with a broad LUT (day for nite)
Why does speed grade act this way?

    Sam,
In the Direct Link process, Speedgrade uses the PrPro project file, rather than creating it's own internal files. Adobe is very cautious about allowing Sg to mess with that project file, with any/all sequences/timelines that might be there. So therefore ... ALL features that directly change a sequence timeline itself are locked-out, or as viewed ... greyed-out. They don't really explain this too well anywhere I've seen yet. So there are some caveats with working Direct Link, and once you get them down it is a sweet process ... mostly. You're right, you can't do anything but adjust how things "look" in a D-L session. That doesn't mean you can't change things of course ...
Grading layers: Create "adjustment layers" over clips or whole sequences in PrPro before going D L to Sg, and use those ... works just fine, as Joost notes. Any of Sg's adjustments from color primaries/secondaries/LOOKs/LUTs work fine applied in an "adjustment layer" the same as if they were in an Sg-created 'grading layer'.
There is one BIG CAVEAT: as Sg is not allowed to touch that timeline UNTIL you click on the "save & go back to PrPro" icon, IT DOES NOT DO ANY AUTOSAVES NO MATTER HOW YOU'VE SET PRPRO & SG FOR AUTOSAVING! If you have PrPro running in the background, you may see a brief flash of "autosaving" or something to that effect every now & then. IT IS NOT SAVING YOUR SPEEDGRADE WORK in a Direct Link session, do NOT be deceived!
You will need to do manual saves or save-as's every so often or risk losing your work. Yea, I wuz the guy what found this out ... sigh. Only lost two hours of work, and we had a joyful thread about this when I posted on that some months back. There's been talk of doing something about this, don't know if there's a correction for this coming.
Other than that, grading in Sg in a D L session works as you'd expect.

  • "direct link to adobe speedgrade" is disable

    Hello!
I use Premiere Pro CC and Speedgrade CC 2014. But in my Premiere Pro "direct link to adobe speedgrade" is disable. How can I fix it?

  • Speedgrade 7.2.1-direct link-GPU-real time color updates?

    Hello,
Adobe says that SpeedGrade 7.2.1 now takes advantage of the GPU when Direct Linking a sequence out of Premiere.
    Questions:
    1.  Does this mean I should see color corrections update in real time in my scopes and monitors the same way I see real time color updates in a native ircp SpeedGrade project?
    2.  I have a Black Magic DeckLink 4K Extreme card.  Can SpeedGrade use my 4K card, or handshake with Mercury Transmit, so that I can get either an HDMI or SDI video signal output to my monitor?
    3.  I notice that for Premiere, adobe officially certifies GTX 690 for windows, and GTX 680 for Mac.  Does this mean GTX 690 is not supported for Mac?
    4.  I tried right clicking on the SpeedGrade app, opening packet contents, and adding gtx 690 into cuda approved card list.  That didn't seem to help.  I did not try to amend the Open CL card list document, would that help?
    Here is my system config:
    Mac Pro Tower Early 2009
    2 x 2.66 6-core Intel Xeon
    48GB RAM 1333 DDR3
    Cards:
Mac system report says all three of these are GPUs, however, my tech guy says the 640 is for GUI.
    1.  NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 (slot 2)
    2.  NVIDIA GeForce GT 690 (PCI Lane width x16)
    3.  NVIDIA GeForce GT 690 (PCI Lane width x16)
    Cuda driver 6.0.37
Media storage is a raided 9TB serial ATA, about 300mbs read and write.  Hard drive is even faster.
Adobe if you are listening, I'm trying to add SpeedGrade to my tool belt, especially since you did such a good job integrating the Tangent Element.  The whole point of using SpeedGrade, as opposed to Resolve, is that the Premiere sequence links.  I have access to everything, except AE comps.

    Alright folks...I'm so close.
So, recap, getting real time performance and color updates using Direct Link in my external scopes and monitor, now that I'm on a Z800, windows 7 64 bit, with Quadro 4000, Cuda driver 394, AJA LHi card and break out box.
    However, some problems still:
    1.  My internal SpeedGrade scopes are just a group of funky dots that kinda resemble my external scopes, viewing the same signal.  Computer monitor resolution is 1920x1080.  Tried other display options, still funky dots.  Not a biggy, since external scopes are fine, just curious as to what's up with that?  Is it because I'm using the latest Cuda driver 394, instead of an older one, since 4000 is old?
2  Do I need a LUT for SpeedGrade to output an HDMI video and SDI video signal in Rec709 2.4 gamma?  Is it the handshake with the AJA LHI?  Looks like it's spitting out sRGB 2.2 right now.  I imported bars that I made in Symphony.  These bars play out fine in Symphony and Resolve, through the same signal path SDI to the same monitor.  However, in SpeedGrade whites are lower than a 100 and blacks are lifted.  Since the bars in the external monitor look very similar to computer monitor, I'm assuming SpeedGrade is spitting out sRGB signal.  Can't seem to insert the images I snapped, if they would help, I can email them.
    3.  Since there is no manual for SpeedGrade, I'm about to buy a 3rd party "class in a book" just so I can have some run down of what some of the settings and preferences options actually mean.  Like what's "shaders?"  Or why does it seem like framerate can be set in three different preference tabs?  Would be nice if there was just a document with a run down of settings and preferences for both Premiere and SpeedGrade.  Especially since I already have great turorials for the actual operaton of SpeedGrade like Patrick Inhofer's.
Thanks in advance.  Wait....do you hear that....Adobe...is that you????

  • Poor Speedgrade performance using premiere's Direct Link

I am having a problem grading my project in Speedgrade using Direct Link from Premiere.
My project is in total 7min 30sec long consisting of MP4 video from my Canon T5i/700D. Video had a slightly higher bitrate (CBR) than usual (1.4 maybe?). In premiere I have done a bit of stabilizing using after effects (warp stabilizer) and denoising (magic bullet denoiser II) . All of these I used the 'replace with after effects composition' option. These shots make up about 1/6th of the total sequence. All my project files are located on my SSD (I thought moving them there would help. It doesn't). worth noting I am also using a custom LUT designed for CineStyle which I'm using on my canon.
My problem is the speed. It's not even a little slow. It's unusable. Let's say I select midtones and want to up the offset a tiny bit. I click the slider and slowly move my hand up. I then have to wait around 10 - 15 seconds for speedgrade to even start recognising the change. If I let go the mouse it means I have to wait again a long time to change it once again. It's the same for all the other sliders (color temp etc.)
I've grown to like using Speedgrade for color correction but now it's taking far too long. What should take around 20 seconds per clip is taking around 5 - 10 minutes. Also as a result my correction and grading is gotten pretty bad (it wasn't that good to start off with). Restarting it doesn't help as it's just as slow when it starts as an hour later.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any ideas?
As I'm in a bit of a rush with this project I'm going to try just do the grading in Premiere. I've never done grading in the CC version of premiere, so is there any new color tools someone could recommend?
    Thanks.

Looking through your gear for a quick idea ... it appears you're running twin (separate) video cards? You might try a quick disable of one card, and see if Sg runs better. I suggest this because 1) some computers at some times have had trouble running paired vid cards in Sg and 2) it's a quick & easy thing to test.
As another thought, I did some denoising on a 2:39 clip in Ae just using its own built-in denoiser, and it ran  s   l   o  w  after that until I did a complete render of it. Even then, any change I made and it was back to   s   l   o   w  motion. When I commented here, I had a couple responses to the effect that denoising is so hardware-intensive that most of the time they left that to the final set of things before exporting.
    Hope there's other responses ...

  • Speedgrade - Rectangle appears over footage in Premiere after direct link

I am using Speedgrade via direct link from Premiere, with a timeline that consists of a video track with all of my clips, another track containing adjustment layers, and a top track containing a .PNG file of a black letterbox.
Problem:  After applying primary and secondary color adjustments in Speedgrade (no masks) I return to Premiere.  If I hide the top track which contains my .PNG letterbox, a mysterious RECTANGLE appears over my footage.  This rectangle is even present in clips that haven't been graded yet.
I have included a picture to illustrate my point.
    System Specs:
    - Intel Mac OS 10.9.2
    - NVIDIA Quadro4000  GPU
    - Premiere 7.2.1
    - Speedgrade 7.2
    - Editing with .R3D files from Red Epic Camera

    **UPDATE
This problem may not be a result of speedgrade.  Instead, I'm wondering if it's more of an issue within Premiere.  I noticed that the rectangle is caused by my adjustment layer that is sitting directly above my main video track.    As a test, I found several clips that were sitting below one adjustment layer.  I applied a three-way color correction effect to the adjustment layer, and gave it a severe blue tint.  One would expect the adjustment layer to effect the entire image on every underlying clip, but instead it only applied to a small rectangle within those clips.  As I scrub through the timeline, the rectangle moves around and changes size.  Then I realized that each clip had different amounts of scaling and positioning.  So this mysterious rectangle seems to be caused by the scaling and positioning of the underlying clips.  My adjustment layer is sized to the resolution of my 2K timeline.  However, each clip is 5K, scaled to fit.  So perhaps I need to make my adjustment layer the same exact size of my underlying clips?
As a test, I scaled my adjustment layer and noticed that if I increase the size by .01, the mysterious rectangle immediately jumps to fill the entire image.  Weird.
Another weird thing to point out, referencing my original post:  The image of the girl has NO color correction applied to it, and the same goes for the adjustment layer above it.  However, there is still a rectangle present.  This clip has a small amount of rotation applied, and the rectangle is also rotated, leading me to believe the problem is because of a scaling difference between the adjustment layer and clip.  But still, WHY would there be a rectangle there when there is no color correction applied???

  • Mac Pro 6,1 STILL having issues with Open CL (4K scaling and SpeedGrade direct link grades)

I've seen the staff responses to the issues of the new Mac Pro GPU saying that 10.9.4 fixes everything. For me, it has fixed my export issues, so I'm glad. I'm no longer getting lines and artifacts on my renders.
    That's great.
However, I'm still having several issues, and they seem to be linked to Adobe and Open CL.
Here's a video that shows what's going on:
mac pro issues july 7 - YouTube
    Issue #1
Like most of you probably, I'm doing 1080p exports of most things I'm working on. The first project shows a 1080p timeline with a mix of 4k, 5k, and 720p footage. Because zooming in so much on a 720p file in a 4k timeline looks so crappy, I'm doing 1080p timelines and scaling everything to the size it needs to be. I started in a 4k timeline then switched to 1080p because the 720p footage looked so terrible. However, in the 4k timeline, I didn't have any of the issues I'm showing in this first part of the video.
When I switched to the 1080p timeline, I discovered a weird quirk: When I resize the 4k (or 5k) footage to the size it needs to be (which varies based on the frame I want), it goes back to the 100% view when I'm scrubbing through it. When I pause, the size of the video goes back to the way I set it. I show this in the video. Then I show what was my working solution for the time being: "scale to frame size", which brings all the videos to the size of the sequence frame size and works fine. Later, I turn off OpenCL in premiere and when I scrub through the video, it doesn't zoom back in or only stay at the size I set when stopped. For some reason all of these issues only happen at 50% scale or smaller. It doesn't happen at, say, 60%.
I've tested this with raw R3D files and other 4K (or 5K) clips (even clips exported from After Effects) and the same thing happens. It doesn't seem to happen with 2.5k footage or 1080p footage.
    Issue #2
This is the second project you'll see in the video.
After grading in speedgrade (through direct link) I open my project back up in premiere and start playing it back. The video plays back with delays and frame drops. Now normally, this would be expected. But this is 1080p pro res footage, and this is just an effect added, and the yellow bar appears indicating that open CL should be accelerating the playback and it should do so smoothly.
Maybe I was just wrong in assuming that a simple grade from speedgrade would be able to playback smoothly. I turn off the grade, and it plays normally.
But then, when I turn off open cl and leave the grade on, the video plays back without ANY issues.
So to me, it seems I'm still having issues with Open CL and adobe. I've found fixes that make it work temporarily, I don't need that kind of answer. However, I would like this to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Something I need to do to get this to work?
    Here are my specs:
    Mac Pro 6,1 (Late 2013)
    3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB (x2)
    OSX 10.9.4
    Firmware: 2.20f18
What you're seeing is latest version of Premiere (CC 2014, v8.0.0 [169] Build)
Everything here is ProRes 422, running from a Promise Pegasus2 R4 RAID (drives: 4x Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000) (that's thunderbolt 2).
I've done everything: I've restarted my computer hundreds of times, I've reset NVRAM and PRAM and done power cycles.
This isn't just some issue that started with 10.9.3 of OSX, the 4k issues happened when I first switched to a 1080p sequence back in February (2014) or so, which means it was an issue even with 10.9.2 and the previous firmware release.
I've reported this issue to adobe.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
