Direct Select Align to Object in Group

As it is, when you direct select an object and align to it, they both move even if you click one to align to. If this behavior could be made consistent with the normal select where you can click one of the objects again to target the "align to" it would help.

This "Feature" needs to go! I can't cntrl+click shapes to edit them anymore. WHY would adobe remove this / change this???
Answered my own question: Photoshop CC - Cannot control + click to select a different shape while using the pen tool?

  • Direct Select for Multiple Objects?

Trying to fit a 3D box with a 2D skin that I made, and losing miserably.
I know that using direct select I can move anchor points to fit the DIMs
of my box, I cannot get Illustrator to use the entire layer, or group in its
direct select though (Probably why it's called 'Direct' select, right? lol).
Anyway, anyone know how I can adjust an entire layer of objects? I
wish Illustrators Transform capability was the same as Photoshops,
    would make this a snap.
    -jd

Do you know how to use Photoshops Transform feature? It is really a whole
lot easier to explain it like that. In Photoshop, you can select multiple layers
(in our case, the layers are really objects ). Transform, and hold down
CTRL (or whatever the MAC equiv) to Skew and Distort your layer by grabbing
the corners, or the center of the object and moving. This will allow you to have
your base |_| all of a sudden turn into a diagonal /_ / .....? Get it?
Okay I have a 3D box,  at a 35* angle or so. I have a layer that is pretty much
a rectangle. What I am trying to do is, skew one end, to fit that 35* slope. It
would essentially make that 90* by 90* recangle diagonal, 90* by 35* grade.
If that doesn't make sense I will screencap but I think I'm explaining it fairly
    well.

  • Direct Select in Groups

Before CS5, I was able to select one object in a group of objects by using the Direct Selection tool. This doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there a new method?

The direct select tool works just as it always has for selecting a grouped object, as far as I can tell. I have no issues selecting an object or rule in a group with it as long as the thing I'm trying to select is not actually behind another object at the point where I'm trying to click, and that's not new.
What is new in CS5 is that double-clicking with either the selection tool or the direct select tool gives the functionality of having switched to the other tool, but does not actually switch in the toolbox, which means you don't have to constantly switch back and forth, which I find to be a real timesaver. The other new thing is that if you select an object behind another, it stays selected so you can move it without having to find the center dot.
I find no need to bring the grouped rules to the front or select the group as a whole first using either tool as long as there is a spot on the rule that is not covered by the text frame.

  • Selecting multiple objects with Direct Select tool

I'm working in InDesign CS4 on a pc and am having trouble with the Direct select tool. I go through my document selecting multiple objects, change the color of the selected boxes only to find that about half of my objects have "deselected" themselves. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone have a fix I could try? Thanks!

I know, I was pretty vague.
Are you continuing to hold the shift key with each addition? Yes
Are you trying to selct things on more than one spread? No
Are you being careful to click inside each object other than an image and on the frame for an image? Yes

  • Why i am unable to select between 2 anchor points with in a object while dragging with direct select

why i am unable to select between 2 anchor points with in a object while dragging with direct selection tool instead it moves

Another option is to temporarily change your view to outline mode, when your done switch back to preview mode. Ctrl-Y or View>Outline {View>Preview} The menu option will change depending on which mode you are in.
And another option, double click on the object in question to place it in Isolation mode. You can now edit to your hearts content. When done, click on the gray border at top of document.
So as you can see there are multiple ways of accomplishing the same thing.

  • Group and direct selection tools

I am hovering above artwork with both the Direct Selection tool and the Group Selection tool and they both seem to show the same paths and anchor points.
I am also not sure that I see a difference when selection shapes or groups.
    1. Is there any difference with the info that is displayed when hovering over shapes and paths with either of these tools?
    2. How does using the group selection tool differ from the direct selection tool?

    1. there seems to be no difference
    2. basically among other uses, the direct selection tool is used to edit paths/segments, and the group selection tool is used to move paths or groups.

  • Drag Select Inside Points With The Direct Selection Tool While Above An Object?

I'm trying to modify a path in InDesign CS5 (Fig. 2), as it is now I have to select each point individually. Becasue while you're zoomed in (Fig. 1), you can't drag and select the points. When you attempt to do that, you end up dragging the whole image.
Is there a way to drag select inside points with the direct selection tool while your directly above the image with the paths you want to select?
    Fig. 1
    Fig. 2

    FAIL #1:
No. When you copy paste the Cliiping Path [NOT the frame] into Illustrator, then alter the path and paste back into Indesign, it pastes it back as a FRAME, NOT a CLIPPING PATH.
    FAIL #2:
Why do people comment on this stuff without first testing what they are suggesting?
What you suggested doesn't work or even make sense.
Apprently in InDesign, you can't have a CLIPPING PATH without an IMAGE there to begin with. When a FRAME OBJECT contains an IMAGE the option to convert the object to an UNNASSIGNED OBJECT is greyed-out, as in UNSELECTABLE, as in NOT POSSIBLE, which is another way of saying IMPOSSIBLE, which in most circles pertains to MAJOR FAILAGE.
When you CUT [hold command then press X] the CLIPPING PATH, from the FRAME/OBJECT you can then unassign the object, but when you paste the CLIPPING PATH back in, it invariably pastes the IMAGE along with the CLIPPING PATH, and once again the UNASSIGNED OBJECT is simply an ordinary frame with an image, and thus NO LONGER AN UNASSIGNED FRAME.
People like you make life harder dude, seriously.
Again, like some of the folks above, you're confusing a FRAME PATH [that you can alter and create with the pen tool as well] with a CLIPPING PATH. They are NOT the same thing.
Know the difference between the two before you feel inclined to respond.
My kingdom for someone out there with some merit and sense of accountability.
It's like, where do you people work? Are you serious? SMH.

  • What's your fastest way to center align two objects without moving one of them?

I will greatly appreciate your tips.

Use the align palette and set one object as a key object. Choose align to: and set that to key object(if not already set)
    Select one group
Shift click to add the next group to the selection
then click on an group again to set this as a key object (the outline will turn bold since CS4 to signify the is a key object)
choose an alignment in the align panel

  • Selection vs. direct selection tool

I am working on a somewhat complicated design in InDesign with lots of grouped objects. I select the SELECTION TOOL and start selecting groups or single objects. About my 2nd or third click, InDesign switches to the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL. I don't want the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL, I want the SELECTION TOOL which is why I chose it. I go back and rechoose the SELECTION TOOL. ONce again, after a few clicks InDesign changes me to the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL. The nerve! This is happening constantly and driving me mad.
Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it???
    Thanks
    Debbie

    Debbie, Judy & everybody else:
have you find some way to solve this? It's driving us all crazy at work...
We hace ID cs, CS2 & CS3, G4 & intel, slow & fast double clicking in the system preferences... No way to solve this like Nini said???
(Nini: are you 100% sure about your "no"?)
    thanks

And another question if the data is already there in the child table if i try to load alone it must delete the old data in the child tablee and need to get load the new data and
    How to do this ?
    Arunraj Kumar
You can do that with an IF EXISTS condition
    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1
    FROM YourChildTable c
    INNER JOIn @temptable t
    ON c.Bkey1 = t.Bkey1
    AND c.Bkey2 = t.Bkey2
    DELETE t
    FROM YourChildTable c
    INNER JOIn @temptable t
    ON c.Bkey1 = t.Bkey1
    AND c.Bkey2 = t.Bkey2
    INSERT INTO YourChildTable
where Bkey1,Bkey2 etc forms the business key of the table

  • Direct selection tool not working

Im trying to use the direct selection tool, but instead of moving objects its only moving anchor points.. how can i fix this? it doesn't usually happen!! Im using illustrator CS6
    THANKS!!!

    godcoma,
I believe the (normal  black arrow) Selection Tool is what you are after here.
If you ClickDrag an Anchor Point of an unselected object with the Direct Selection Tool, only that Anchor Point will be dragged along. If the whole object is selected, the whole object will be dragged along. You may select the whole object in the Layers palette if that is what you wish.

Allowing access to select few public objects

I am developing a java application. I need to provide some scripting support (using Jython or Rhino) to my application so that the user can better use my application. Now the problem is I just want a select few public objects to be accesible via scripts and not all public objects I have written internally. I read somewhere that class name and code obfuscation could be a option but not a full proof solution. Can anyone suggest how a full proof solution can be achieved? Would running the script interpreter in seperate JVM help (and propogate the calls to the original JVM) ? Would a custom class loader help? Please suggest.
    Thanks,

Would a custom class loader help? Possibly depending upon how the interpreter dispatches calls.
Can anyone suggest how a full proof solution can be achieved? With jython, you could write custom PyObject subclasses (or general java facade classes) to expose only the methods you want to. The former technique allows more cool scripting functionality, the latter would presumably work in other interpreters. This would have to be done for every object you want to expose.
Alternatively, you could enable a SecurityManager and allow only trusted code to invoke yours.

No.Could you please explain why this wouldn't work?
    The plan is:
Let say I have 2 public objects A & B and I want the user to only use A via their scripts.
    In JVM1: I use both A & B
In JVM2: I write a psuedo A and not B. For all the methods of A, I propogate the calls to JVM1 (I think this is achievable but not sure how)
The script interpreter runs on JVM2.
Now if the user tries to access A then the call would go to JVM1 but if he tries to access B then there is no B available in JVM2 so the user cant access B.
I know this method could be heavy as each call would have to go from JVM1 to JVM2.
By sepeate JVMs I mean seperate instance of java.

RMI has a way for multiple JVMs to communicate programmatically; you could also use sockets on the loopback network device (localhost). These techniques are how mature Java products constrain their number of running instances to a finite number (usually 1), they terminate any starting JVM early in the initialization procedures of the main method if the "already-running test" indicates one is running.
If you use the networking method, you could basically read from a ServerSocket on the "executing" JVM, while the "scripting" JVM writes to a Socket. Then use reflection in the executing (server) side to determine if the method or object being referenced is one you want to expose. If not, do something -- like write back to the client that the method invocation was invalid. Reflection will slow down your code a lot though, so I don't recommend it for apps that already take up 50 megs or more of RAM ;)

    Sean

    No.
Could you please explain why this wouldn't work?It could work. I said no because the other methods are better - easier to implement and vastly more performant without wasting resources.

Ya, the seperate JVM approach seems complex and might not be fully achievable.
Can someone give small code snippets on how the method level control be achieved using Java SecurityManager. Just a recap on what I am trying to achieve -
A & B are two public objects defined internally by my app.
I have to give the user of my app the ability to write some code. But only B
is to be exposed to client and not A.
Let say I have this code -
    Object A = Interpreter.InitializeEngine(..);
    A.executeFromUser(stdin);
The user mostly uses some scripting language, say Python and the Interpreter
is Jython. Now my Interpreter is capable of understanding calls to Java
objects from Python. If the user tries to access B via the scripts then it
should be allowed to do so but access to A should not be allowed via the
    scripting language.
    Thanks,
    Neeraj

What you probably want is to give the user access to an interface - not a class - that only exposes the methods that you want to expose.
This is the way all RMI APIs are exposed to client programs.

Just one more comment. You haven't said very much about the runtime model of the scripting environment vs your java environment. How many processes do you expect to have running to make the system work? Are you expecting your java code to wind up in a jar file and get loaded by the Python process? Or are you planning on the java code executing in a separate process? If the latter, then RMI is probably your best bet.

I haven't finalized on the runtime model yet as the scripting security issue is still not resolved. But I am sure that the java app code would init and run the scripting code and not the other way round. The app is pretty huge with heavy UI. Ya, the java code would be wrapped in jars (but mostly not in a single jar as I dont want the jar to be too hefty).
Can someone comment on the use of SecurityManager in this case. My initial investigation shows that the objective on implementing method level security can't be implemented by this.

My initial reply suggested writing a facade in java or by subclass PyObject. I highly recommend this path for ease of development, use, and runtime performance.
Given that you don't understand the basics of java security, I will recommend this again.

I have started investigating on facade in java and subclassing PyObject. But I am not sure how these would resolve the primary issue. Even if I use these and if the script writer knows that there is a public class, say XYZ in my app then he can always access that class directly skipping my subclassed PyObject or the Java facade. Or am I missing something here?

how these would resolve the primary issue. Even if I use these and if the script writer knows
that there is a public class, say XYZ in my app then he can always access that class directly
skipping my subclassed PyObject or the Java facade. Or am I missing something here?Presumably your objects are somehow connected to the application. Your user could do something like:
    from com.foo import Player
    p = Player()
p.setGold(Integer.MAX_VALUE)But of course the new Player object would not be part of the game. Now if you have some kind of static/singleton game state, then the malicious user could insert the Player into the game model...
The real trick lies in understanding how to setup the jython interpreter. If your interpreter classloader can only load facade classes (and system classes) then the client script could not load other classes. There is also a hook for the import keyword so you could disallow importing java classes. Each interpretor instance has the ability to setup the locals and globals for the session so you can insert live game objects.
I am only familiar with jythons internals, so this may or may not be applicable to rhino.

  • Direct Selection Tools Randomly Stops Functioning

Hello, I'm having some issues with Adobe Illustrator. For some reason, the direct selection tool will randomly stop allowing me to edit my anchor points. Instead of directly selecting a specific point on a path and giving me the option to move it/ adjust the curve, it just selects the entire path and simply moves it. This is very frustrating, because it forces my to make my paths perfect the first time I make them with the pen tool and doesn't allow me to edit them later. Before you ask, I am indeed using the plain white arrow (not the black one or the white arrow w/ the + sign) and I do not have any conflicting layers above the path or any strange groups that would cause this weird effect. The white arrow also makes the white box when I hover over an anchor point, but clicking doesn't do anything but select the entire path. Please help!

    Christopher,
    >This is very frustrating, because it forces my to make my paths perfect the first time I make them with the pen tool and doesn't allow me to edit them later.
Obviously, Illy is trying to help you get perfect.
If you want to cheat, you could try following the instructions in FAQ #2.

  • Unable to select and extract object...

I am currently attempting to edit a recently converted raster to vector image. I have the file opened and selected after having used the "live trace" function to revise it and save as a vector image. Now I would like to select and extract a portion of the image to work with but I am neither able to select and extract the object of focus from within the general picture. When I attempt to use the pointer selection tool to select the object of focus, the entire image becomes selected with a blue border. If I try to use the magic wand nothing happens. If I try to use the lasso tool I can draw around the object of focus but when I close the lasso it simply disappears leaving nothing selected. I've even tried to "ungroup" the image but option is grayed out (unavailable). Any insights into what I am doing incorrectly? By the way, the live trace function becomes active whenever I click anywhere within the general image.

    RUConscious,
Expanding the Live Trace should make it accessible and editable just like any other vector artwork where you may Direct Select individual/multiple Anchor Points, Select paths, etc.
Maybe a closeup of the issue area, with a hint at what exactly you wish to do, would help the helpers, preferably including the relevant part of the Layers panel (which may be moved).
Apart from that, others may tell you that I am too old, or silly, to apply Live Trace.

  • Selection Tool suddenly acting like Direct Selection Tool during click-and-drag

    Hello!
This morning, my Selection Tool (the filled-in arrow) is acting like a Direct Selection Tool (the hollow arrow), but only when I click and drag on a group.  It ends up select the anchors within the group rather than the whole group itself.
I've checked my preferences, quit and relaunched Illustrator a few times, and nothing seems to fix it.  The problem briefly went away a few minutes ago, but came back when I quit and relaunched for good measure.
It's happening in Illustrator CS 5.1.  I have CS6, and that version works fine, but I'm waiting on some plugins to be updated for it, so I'd like to use CS 5.1.  I'm also running the latest Suitcase Fusion 4.
Any input on this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Does the cursor appear correct, do you have any other keys depresessed?
