Direct to Disk - Firewire issues

I am new to FCP, i have been using Vegas video on PC but now have a MBP.
I am trying to do tapeless recording for our webcast studio, we have a 50ft 4 pin firewire cable and a 4 -6 pin adapter. It works prefect on any windows machine so i know the cable is good. But when i plug it into my MBP or the offices Mac Pro the camera is not detected.
I got it to work once but that was a one time deal
In FCP i have set as "Non Controllable Device" and then go to "log and capture" that is where i just get color bars and no camera feed, if i use a shorter cable it works.
But why would the cable work on a PC and not Mac?
Is there any other software that might work better for Direct to Disk?
Thanks

The specification for FireWire (also known as i.link or IEEE 1394) states that the maximum length of a FireWire cable is 4.5 meters (14.5 feet). As a result, you cannot extend the distance of your FireWire device more than 14.5 feet without using an "active" extension cable.
That's my guess. As to the PC versus Mac -- who knows

  • FireWire Issues - anyone else?

Have a PB G4, 1.67, with an Apple-repaired logic board [from Nov 08]. After latest Security updates, I have had trouble connecting either 800 or 400 FW drives. I've tried them on an iMac and iBook; both work. Tried different cables, three different drives [2 OCW, one Verbatim]. Nothing works. Wiggled cables. Used both bus and external power.
HELP please. I don't want to spend another $350 [plus postage from UK via APO] to fix this a third time [was a refurb, used from PowerMax, they looked at logicboard once, and then I used Apple's fix it service]. The Apple repair warranty expired in Feb 09.
I might try an $80 cardbus FW800/400 if I can find one still.
    Thanks in advance.

Frustrating trying to get it to work .... You can zap the PRAM as well as reset the PMU anytime. At this point, if you haven't go ahead and do the PRAM and might as well do the PMU again. Reset PRAM. Note the effects are immediate, there's no advantage to waiting overnight:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
It sounds like you may have had hard drive issues that Drive Genius fixed for you. For comparison, did you run the Disk Utility disk repair after Drive Genius fixed the hard drive .. just to see if Disk Utility gives the drive a clean bill of health?
When you ran the Apple hardware test, did you run the extended test? Do you have either of the TechTool programs available? They do similar testing to the Apple hardware test, it would be interesting to see if they also say the hardware is OK.
You've reloaded the operating system a couple of times. Did you use the combo update to update to 10.4.11? I prefer that to letting Software Update make the updates, as sometimes it doesn't update correctly. Repair disk permissions before and after the update, too. Then run software update to pick up any other required updates.
You've, by this time, reset PRAM and PMU, I assume the PRAM reset didn't change anything? If so, sorry, but I don't know what else you can do. At this point, I'd take it to a genius at the Apple store, and get their opinion.
I didn't address sleep as I think you need to resolve the Firewire issue first, then see if there is a sleep problem.

  • Firewire Issues: External Hard Drives & DV  Deck Sony DSR 11 not recognized

So, I have this brand new $6000 Mac Pro that will not recognize a simple DV deck, nor the external HD's.
Thus, after spending seven hours searchig around last night, trying every configuration possible from updates, unplug power source, and everything else, I began making calls as of 4 am this morning.
I was referred to FCP Europe where I was informed that I needed FCS friver updates. (unavailable for 1.0.1) or perhaps it was a Sony issue. The deck & drives work fine with my G4 & Powerbook G4. With six fire wire ports on the Mac Pro, and nothing being recognized via a single fire wire port, does anyone have a simple, expedient solution? Thank you.

Ahhhh. Firewire issues. I'm convinced that these Macpros have some serious problems here. I am running a sony dsr11 also with a digi002. MY issues is bootup. . I have a mac pro with Tiger installed. My issue is I intermittently get a prohibitted error on bootup. The error looks like a no smoking sign without the cigerett. I have to re boot and sometimes the os boots right up othertimes not. I have sfound that I have to boot my sytem with noting hooked up first. It seems when you have high end firewire devices that the Bus just can't handle it. Real ****** for thos who bought the system for A/V work. Everything woks fine on my powerbook and my G5. Problem is with MACPRO! Do you also have other firewire devices hooked up? Are they daisychained together?

  • Direct to disk recording--to mpeg stream

Don't know if this is the correct place to post this but...
We have a Cable TV station in which our video server uses mpeg streams. My question is I began using Bear's hand to record direct to disk from camera. Is there a workflow where one can take what is being recorded in Bear's hand or any other software and encode it on the fly. Is there a way for example to use apple script to do this?

  • CS5 support is falling down - the famous firewire issue

As a loyal user of Adobe professioanl editing solutions for the last 10 years this past month has been a nightmare.  When I inquired about upgrading to CS5 from CS3 I was advised during an online chat with an Adobe person here on the site to upgrade to CS4 and because of the timing I would get a complimentary CS5 upgrade.  I purchased CS4 on April 14th and had so many issues it was never even used in the edit suite.  When CS5 became available I decided to cut my losses and decided if I was going to have to go through all the hoops I might as well only go through them once with CS5.  I have had numerous long discussions with Adobe "support" regarding various problems and now I am at the end of my rope.  Even though they say the are taking notes during our conversations each subsequent "support" person claims to not know most of the pariculars discussed in previous phone calls.  I didn't think I had to follow up each phone call with a note here but evidently that is the case.  Today I have a deadline to deliver content on TAPE to a national cable network and the series contract could be in jeapordy if I can't deliver the first of 26 episodes.  I CANNOT PREVIEW ON AN EXTERNAL TELEVISION MONITOR OR EXPORT THROUGH FIREWIRE TO MY MAIN DV DECK.  It is a deck I have used for YEARS with Premiere CS2 and CS3 and i NEVER had an issue like this.  I have been told repeatedly that the issue would be resolved and most recently on Tuesday of this week I was promised a callback between "1PM and 2PM" Central Standard time on Wednesday, THAT CALL NEVER CAME.  When I followed up with another call MOST of the days previous discussion was NOT in my case notes.  I was told my main Sony VTR and secondary JVC VTR were not HDV decks even though I have been using BOTH for many years for just that purpose and even though that didn't address the most pressing of all my issues which was just getting output through firewire to tape.  After a very frustrating call I was promised another callback "in an hour" by a "supervisor".  That call NEVER came.  Both Adobe "support" and PNY Quadro "support" claim that they have "never" heard of the firewire issue even though it is all over the forums at Adobe.  I will be posting this and every subsequent communication between me and Adobe on the forums, at Yelp and any other web sites that take reviews of professional video products.  For the record just some of my other issues include the inability to capture HDV from the Sony HDV deck I have been capturing from for years, Alpha Glow not working and no split screen when doing color correction in a number of effects where it is offered.   Also for the record I have tried turning off the MPE GPU acceleration to export to tape and that doesn't work either.  System is a Supermicro dual processor motherboard with lots of ram and a Quadro FX 3800 operating with 64 bit Windows 7.

    Read here:
    http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50433.aspx
It may get firewire working again on your older deck with Windows 7.  If the solution on that page works, then the problem is down to Microsoft, not Adobe.
FWIW, it's getting to be pretty well known around these parts that the current implementation of Adobe Customer Service is awful.  That said, several Adobe employees, including some Premiere Pro engineers, have been hanging out in the forums recently.  This is a big change from earlier releases of Pr, where an Adobe presence was rarely seen at all.
These same folks have also said that Adobe is working to improve their Customer Service.  Like the inertia of a large ship forcing it to take a long time to change course, I suspect that it will take a bit longer for Adobe to make that improvement than it would for a smaller company.  Don't give up on 'em just yet.

  • Disk Space Issues

Does anyone out there have best practice insights on how to deal with disk space issues on the database server?  Can we copy the files onto different drives and then rename the drives?  Will everything with the BPC application sync up again?
Is there anything tricky in dealing with this issue?
    Thank you,
    Grant

    Hi Grant,
I once had to move the SQL database files from one drive to another. The only thing that I did was 'Detach the SQL database' in Enterprise Manager, move the files and 'Attach these files again. Everything else was automatically changed.
You can attach/detach using sql statements or using the graphicall user interface from SQL.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 DP - Reserve Disk Space issue

    Hi Team,
Issue with SCCM 2012 DP. Reserve Disk space issue.
During DP installation I have given 100000 MB as Reserve disk space, now my DP Share drive reached below 97 GB of free space, now I’m unable to distribute packages to the DP.
Below is the error Message in Smsdpprov.log
Failed to find space for 105874160 bytes.
    Solution tried:
Tried changing the reserve disk space value in Registry (HKLM- Software – Microsoft – SMS- DP- ReservedDiskSpace),
But the value is getting auto reset to old value after a restart.
Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?

    Hi,
    >>Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?
We need to edit the reserved free space in SQL database. But this is not supported by Microsoft.
    Steps:
    1) Run SQL query:
    select SCR.ID, SCR.Name,SC.NalPath, SCR.Value3 from sc_sysresuse_property SCR join sc_sysresuse SC on SCR.SysResUseID = SC.ID where SCR.name = 'MinFreeSpace' and SC.NALPath like '%<DP_Name>%' and SC.RoleTypeID = 3
Note: you need to replace the <DP_Name> with your actual remote DP server name.
    2) Use the returned ID in step 1). Run the below query to update the 'MinFreeSpace' value.
update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 = 'set desired value in MB' where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 'ID retained in previous select query'
    Example:
    update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 =20480  where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 75340198761234567
    3) In the next package content update cycle, the reserveddiskspace registry value (under HKLM\software\Microsoft\SMS\DP) will be changed
    to 20480.
Or you can restart the SMS_SITE_Component_Manager service on SCCM site server
to update the “reserved free space” value on remote DP.
    Best Regards,
    Joyce

  • Installing a Firewire External Disk Drive - Issue

Running on Lion. I've introduced an external 40Gb Firewire disk. I provide the necessary information then clicked on apply. Within 20 seconds after that the message "Waiting for the disks to reappear". This remains there for hours. The timeline bar is at the midpoint and hasn't moved since the message was issued. The drives are listed on the left including the FW disk but there's no partition listed under it.

iM uses a lot of harddrive space on the "start up"/internal disk, even when the project itself is located on some external drive.. make sure, you have at last 10 - 15GB free...

  • FireWire issue: 4 disks and DV cam

    Hello,
I bought this new iMac Intel to do some basic (but GB crunchy) movie editing.
So on one FW channel, I plugged in my four 3.5" 250GB disks, all cascaded on the same channel. All of them have an external ower supply. Everything is great.
Now, I connect my Canon MXV10i DV cam on the other FW connector (the one close to USB ports) and although the cam can be controlled by iMovie, no image is display neither captured.
I have to "eject" my disks, wait for them to mechanically stop after unmount (still powered though), plug in the cam then re-mount the disks and the image comes perfect and can be captured.
    Any idea?

Do you think there'll be a fix in a near future?
I'm no Apple employee, and if so, we don't commend on future products
all products get improved constantly, but many "errors" don't get corrected... for years, ask Karl or Matti, "unofficial keeper of iM bugs"/http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHDbugs.html...
I received some harsh critique for mentioning the following, but, again:
all these iApps are consumer toys apps.
and they have a concept of usage underneath...
look, how SJ presents the iApps on his keynotes:
some stills from the weekend, a video of a dog-wash... boom!done... the typical Daddy-does-movies... as me!
no word of "318 minutes, 2564 transitions, 311 stills, modiyfied themes, plug-ins for multi layers, usage of level0 raids..." etc....
have a look at the used metaphor in iMovie:
    sorting slides.
that is a >50 year old "technique"... even me understands that.
pro attitude? use pro tools. that easy. (still trying to learn FCE for about a year...)
    back-to-topic, sorry for rant:
    de-plug ext. drives
    import onto internal drive
drag clips/projects onto ext drives later....

  • Firewire issue--Backup drive not found w/Time Machine after imac sleeps

I've had a lot of problems with Time Machine on my G4 imac since starting to use it a month ago. I think I have isolated the problem:
Time Machine functions properly while the computer is in use, and it has no problem after a restart or shut down, but if the computer goes to sleep and then TM runs its hourly backup, I get an error that it cannot find the Backup Drive. Once this happens, TM will no longer work until I've deselected the drive in TM, unplugged it, plugged it in again, and reselected the drive as the backup Drive. Sometimes this requires a shut down or restart too.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. connected the drive via USB--it operated without a problem
    2. unplugged all devices from the computer, shut down, waited, 20 mins, restrted, plugged the external drive back in via Firewire--the problem persists as described above.
    3. deleted the TimeMachine.plist file, restarted--problem persists.
I've read that the Firewire port can be reset with other procedures such as zapping the PRAM or updating the firmware. I've also read that new problems can arise after reseting the PRAM so I'm hesitant to do this. Can anyone shed some light on the PRAM option?
I cannot find where the firmware updates are located on the mac site. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've looked under downloads and after searching, came up with a long list, but nothing was labeled clearly. Each listing mentioned firmware in the header, but it seemed to always pertain to a certain issue (eg. superdrive, or installing appleworks). I could not tell what was the most recent firmware released for my machine, and I fear installing something retrograde that will create new problems.
If anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with the firewire problem, or if you think my issue with using a FW connected drive with Time Machine might be rooted with something else, please comment.
    Thanks!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Disk Repair Issue on iMac G4 Flat-Panel

A few months back, I started up my computer and received the endless loading pinwheel, with no progress since. After visiting this site and getting some info, I was able to discover I had a number of catalog and directory issues which I was told could really only be resolved by purchasing Disk Warrior.
I bought the program and booted it up from CD. It took awhile, but finally it told me it was able to repair the issues it found. I got to the screen that would allow me to Graph or Rebuild the drive. At this point, it told me the disk did not appear on the desktop. I couldn't select any options and I was stuck. So, at that point I let it run for a couple of days and nothing.
From there, I ran TechTool Pro from my Apple Care CD, I ran the Hardware Test CD, and I ran Disk Utility. All stated that there were no physical issues with my drive.
I tried DW again. I can load from CD, agree to the license, and just as it starts the process of "Scanning for disks..." it COMPLETELY freezes, stationary beachball and all.
I've spoken with the DW people and they have concluded that the hard drive probably has physical issues in addition to the directory issues. But, I have run 3 different utilities that all say its fine, and I didn't have any physical issues prior to purchasing Disk Warrior. The only alternative they have given me is to boot from an alternate startup disk (I have no firewire capabilities or external drive) or in target disk mode (again, I don't have another Mac lying around).
So now I am stuck with this new program I can't use. I can't boot the computer normally because of the issues I had which led me to purchase DW. When I try to reinstall the OS, I don't have a disk available to load it to (only the CD from the install disk shows up).
Any thoughts? I swear I have tried everything!

Thanks, but it looks like I have a few more hurdles to overcome before ugrading
As suggested by the Mac Tech from the store, I was able to successfully reinstall OSX on the drive that he magically partitioned and got working for me. I had no issues there.
After the install, I ran Disk Warrior from the CD and inspected/repaired my directory. I got a clean report on the repair. I also ran the hardware test from DW and it stated that my HD was functioning properly. Even the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic said it was fine. To be safe, I also checked the files and folders to make sure there were no issues there. So essentially I ran all the tests that DW offers and everything came back fine.
However, when I boot up normally, I still get the flashing Finder/Question Mark folder icon that continues forever and never boots. I've searched the forums and tried all the options listed here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
Nothing has worked. The only other suggestions I have seen indicate hard drive failure and the need for replacement. But, I JUST ran the diagnostic on my hard drive and it came back without errors. Unless the diagnostics are wrong, I would assume my hard drive is fine.
The only thing I can thing of (again) is that my disk is not mounted on the desktop and its not being recognized at startup. It should be absolutely clean considering I reinstalled the OS and rebuilt the directory with DW.
    Any ideas?

  • Disk Utility Issues Wait to Install Leopard

    Dear fellow Mac users,
Rather than a question, this is a recommendation to those who are wondering whether to install Leopard now or to wait until it gets really stable.
My experience in installing Leopard has not been positive and I chose to revert to Tiger. After discovering several issues and going to the "Genius Bar" of the local Apple Store, I fortunately have been able to restore all my previous settings.
The loss has been mostly time and money, and they frightened me up suggesting that I had to change my hard drive. For those who might experience similar problems, let me provide some details.
    1. Installation of Leopard
After carefully making a bootable backup of my HD on an external drive, I installed Leopard choosing the Option "Erase and install." This occurred without visible glitch. After updating the system to its latest version, I migrated all my data and settings. The result was an incredibly slow system, completely useless. It cannot have been the results of my settings, because I also created a "clean" account called "Maintenance," with the same results. On the recommendation of the "Apple Genius" I also added 1 GB of memory, getting a total of 1.5 GB of RAM installed to the cost of $150. It did NOT improve the situation.
    2. Disk Utility
Because I suspected problems with privileges, I tried to run the Disk Utility. The result was an endless spinning wheel. After waiting several hours, I had to force quit the application. Tried to run it from the install DVD of Leopard, with the same results. People at the Genius Bar also tried their disk utility after booting from an external drive, without any success. They diagnosed a probable failure of the hard drive and recommended that I replace it. Fortunately, I didn't trust this groundless recommendation and made a last attempt by erasing Leopard and reinstalling Tiger. Now it runs just fine, and there is not the slightest mechanical problem. Apparently, and I only discovered this today, the whole disk check procedure changed with Mac OS 10.5, and at this stage it is a complete mess, with enough bugs in Disk Utility to keep the developers busy for a couple of months. I came across discussions of this on the Mac FixIt Website.
Thus, my recommendation at this stage is that if you have Mac OS 10.4.11 running fine you JUST STICK WITH IT and be patient for a few more months. Upgrading at this stage amounts to loosing time, energy, and money. Of course, I am sure that Mac OS 10.5 has many promising features and look forward to using it in the future, but not now. I would be happy to hear contradictory opinions, if any.
    Best wishes for patience.

    Nerowolfe,
I have installed Leopard and have had nothing but problems as well. Perhaps you can help me. I am ready to roll back to Tiger. These are just a few:
    1. I cannot mount my external firewire drives. I have separately tested each and they work fine, I booted with the Tiger disk and they mounted fine, I reset the firewire port and when I connected them they mounted on my desktop, but not in the finder window and when I tried to open one, it just hung. I have been unsuccessful after many attempts to mount one of them with Leopard.
    2. I appear to get random hangs. I have a 160GB hard drive and 2GB memory. I have 42 GB space left on the hard drive....yet I continue to have random hangs, especially when I try to open disk utility
    3. Spotlight just does not work, period
    4. I keep finding locked folders. Right now my CS3 is locked and even after going into get info and unlocking it, it just locks back and I am unable to open the application. I am a photographer and have been unable to do any work for the past 2 weeks while I am messing around with my computer. Now I have Christmas photos to sort and can't access the photos on the external drives or even open CS3
I have searched the forums, tried many of the recommendations, but nothing is working for me....perhaps since you have been successful you could give me a hand with these issues.
    I wait for help.......
Other than that, how do I uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger????
