DIrecting iPhoto to open from my WD Passport rather than the iMac itself
We have recently taken over 15000 photos off of out 2005 iMac iPhoto 5 because the system kept crashing. We placed all of the photos onto a WD Passport. My question is how do I go about having iPhoto open from my WD Passport and not on the iMac? Ideally I would like to keep all of our photos on the WD Passport in an easily viewable format, such as iPhoto. In addition to this I would like to have any new pictures we look to download from our camera go directly to the iPhoto on our WD Passport, and not the iMac itself. Can someone please help out? Much appreciated!!!
Unfortunately I didn't do it that way, and am not sure how to go about that. What I did do was:
1) Made a folder on the WD Passport, than highlighted and dragged all photos to that folder and subsequently deleted them from the iPhoto
If you did the deletions using iPhoto and emptying the iPhoto trash then you have photos (not in iPhoto) on your passport EHD and a working iPhoto library on your internal drive
2) Dragged the iPhoto icon from my iMac 2005 to the WD Passport. Now when I download pics, they seem to populate in both the iMac as well as the Passport, as if they are linked?
There did you drag the iPhoto icon from? there is an iPhoto library icon which by default is in your pictures folder and an iPhoto application which needs to be in the applications folder on your main hard drive.

No they are not linked - It is not totally clear where you are and what you have done - but it sounds like you copied your photos from the iPhoto library on the main drive to a folder on the EHD and then moved the iPhoto application to the EHD - if this is the case the first thing to do is put the iPhoto application back loose at the root level of the applications folder on your boot drive. and test everything - then verify the format of teh EHD and post back
In the end do you want your iPhoto library on the EHD and will you always have the EHD connected and available prior to launching iPhoto?

An additional question now is "the external hard drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)"? How do I know if this is the case?
In the finder right click on it and select "get info" - the format is near the middle of the "general" section

The tabs I have open show as new tabs rather than the websites I had opened.
I have a large number of tabs open in a window, and when I hit "restore previous session" to open them, they are shown as "new tab" rather than the websites I had opened. Prior to the previous two updates, I had no problem with this, but now it's a recurring issue on Firefox.
Make sure that the history and possibly the disk cache are working.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible). -
My computer has started opening up pop up windows that say, "Step 1: Select File, Information Gathered Successfully, Step 2: Click Show Information Button", instead of opening the file I click on. This informaion windown has generated another pop up window that suggests I visit the iTunes store for an app that will open the file. Twice I have purchased apps that the iTunes store said would open the file. Twice the apps have made no difference at all. The apps did not open the file. Even more frustrating than being sold apps that don't work is that the files I'm trying to open are textedit files created with the software on the very computer that is now refusing to open them.
How do I get beyond the pop-ups and open the files I created?
Is it possible to return the apps that iTunes said would work, but did not?Please post a screenshot that shows what you mean. Be careful not to include any private information.

How can I store my iPhoto library on an external hard drive rather than the iMac drive to make my computer faster?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

How much free storage do you have on your iMac's system drive and on the external hard drive?
And how have you been trying to open the library? Do not import the library into iPhoto.
You simply connect the hard drive with the library and double-click the iPhoto library on the external drive to open it in iPhoto. That will work, if you are using iPhoto 9.6, the only version of iPhoto, that is compatible with MacOS X 10.10.
Or hold down the alt/options key while double clicking the iPhoto icon. This will bring up a library chooser panel. Select your library on the external drive.
If the iPhoto Library has been created by an older version of iPhoto it will need to be upgraded to the new version, and that may require temorary additional free storage on your system drive and the drive with the library.
If the library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, you need to install and run iPhoto Library Upgrader, see: iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader -

Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I am having an issue with my adobe acrobat 9 pro. Every time I try to open a pdf from someone it opens it up with my free adobe reader rather than the Acrobat 9 pro so then I don't have all of the functions of 9 pro. How do I get it to open with 9 pro instead of the free reader?
It may depend on the plugin that is loaded into your browser. However, right click on a PDF and select the Open With option and go to the default button to select Acrobat as the default. That might do it.

IMovie 10 imports the original photo from iPhoto rather than the cropped
I am trying to make a video using iMovie 10 and iPhoto. iMovie is displaying the original versions of photos rather than the cropped ones that I edited in iPhoto. Is anyone else having this problem? Using a MacBook Pro, OS 10.9 Mavericks. When I used iMovie 9.0.9 I did not have this problem. I am going to use iMovie 9.0.9 for this project as I need to get in completed quickly.
iOS 8 edits are represented in a format, that iPhoto and Aperture cannot read. When you download your photos with Image Capture instead of with iPhoto, you may see sidecar files "IMG_20XX.AAE", or similar. These are the edited versions of your photos, describing the filters and other settings. The problems is, that there there are not yet any apps on the Mac, that can read these files. We'll just have to wait a bit.

Since upgrading to Mavericks my iMac no longer recognizes my digital camera. iPhoto will open, but my camera never appears in the source list or goes into import mode. Help!
I found that if you open iMage Capture App that seems to trigger iPhoto to open and thew camera is connected. At least that happens with my camera. Good luck.

i also am having this EXACT same problem and alot of others seem to be too? i wonder what is going on here! if anyone from apple reads this, maybe it is something you can look into? My mac did not come with a start up disk and i accidently deleted the iphoto app... i have 2 apple I.Ds but i dont use the one originally registered. i am aware i will have to buy the app again in this case so please let me buy iPhoto please! and thanks!

iPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?
Is this a slideshow played directly from an album or Event or one created in the slideshow mode?
If it's the former that's been a problem for a many users. There hasn't been a firm fix found for it as yet.
There is a workaround. Put the photos in the order you want, select them all and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option. Put in Slide and check the box to add a sequential number to give you Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
Now when clicking the play button at the bottom of the Album or Event window the slides will play in the order Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
The best workaround is to use the iPhoto slideshow mode to crate the slideshow. There's been no reorts of similar problems in that mode.
