Direction Mixer plug-in strangeness

If you insert the direction mixer into a stereo channel and reduce the stereo spread to mono the pan control becomes ineffective.
This means there is no way to mono and position a stereo source without using 2 seperate adjacent mono channels (then the automation has to be done seperately).
I understand how the direction control positions a stereo source but must admit I'm lost as to why as the source is progressively narrowed using the width control the pan control becomes less and less effective until it has no effect whatsoever! Is this correct?
Julian

Direction mixer pan doesn't really work like that, even when the track is in stereo. It's more of a left-right "swap" than a pan, I find it useful occassionally when a stereo sound is naturally panned to one side and I'd rather have it panned to the right.
So if you set the width to "0" (mono) the circular pan knob will be swapping identical signals so no change will happen.
Once you have the width of the sound set to how much you want it to be in the directional mixer, simply use the pan located above the volume fader for that track. I do it all the time, works like a charm!

  • Direction Mixer or Pan Knob on stereo tracks?

Hello to all you brilliant logic forumers,
I just wondered what people were using to pan stereo tracks in light of the pan knob acting like a "balance" knob. As soon as I found that out on this forum I immediately went back to all my songs with stereo tracks in it that I thought I was "panning" and used the Direction Mixer instead.....it was like a whole different mix in a totally different song!
Why would anybody want to use the pan knob to pan stereo tracks if it doesn't take the entire stereo field and pan it to the desired position? It just seems a little bizzare to me that you have to use a plug-in to properly pan a stereo track.

    Hi DR9,
I have a Dierction-Mixer plugin question for you,
since you seem to use it quite a bit.
Where in the audio channel insert slots should i put
it? after all my plugins or as the first insert?
Say I have a mono track that has an EQ, a Stereo
autofilter plugin, followed by a compressor.
Where would be the most Logical (yes, I know) place
    to put it?
On another track, say I have a mono track, but only
with all mono plugins. Then where would it make
    better sense?
    Thanks for any info...
I would love to know the answer to this question also. Forgot to include it in my original post. If I can add one more part to it: What's the benefit of using the Direction Mixer on a Mono track? Thanks to you all.

  • Panning (& mixing) using Logic's Direction Mixer

I'm looking into panning (and even mixing in general) using an insert of Logic's Direction Mixer on every channel.
This follows my discovery that it was not otherwise possible to Send tracks to Busses, then set different panning positions for each of the Return signals.
(Eg, send multiple tracks to a common reverb, but pan the returns to the same position as the sends).
It's a bit confusing though. Suddenly, I'm faced with 180 increments to pan with, instead of the usual 127. (From -90 hard left, to +90 hard right).
Is there any disadvantage to panning using the Direction Mixer? - Does it not obey panning laws? Is there anything else I should know about it?
    All help is appreciated.

The direction mixer does not obey pan laws. I believe from other posts that you can get around this by using FreeG by Solanskis.
The problem with the sends in Logic is that they are pre pan, even if you set them to post fader. The way to get around this is to route the out of you channel to a stereo aux, and then to use the sends from that. Not neat, and I would really like a fix for this.
As a side note, I heard somewhere that with TDM the sends are post pan, or at least selectable like this. I might well be wrong, and I use Logic native, but it's an interesting aside I think...

  • Cannot launch Lightroom 3.3 from direct Camera plug in via USB

I would like to have Lightroom 3.3 launch automatically when I plug my camera in via usb.  When I plug it in, I currently get the option to automatically launch PS elements, Canon photo programs, Picasa, Windows defaults, etc.  For some reason, Lightroom does not appear as an option however.  When I plug an SD card in, I do get this option for automatically launching Lightroom.  Why won't it give me the option direct from my camera?  How can I set this up myself?  I have already tried going in using Windows setting defaults but this program does not appear as an option there either.
    Thank you.  I am using W7 64bit.

  • File Plug-in strange behaviour

    Hi all,
I'm trying to publish a stream using my own File Plugin but I
don't understand how the FMS wants to use it.
    When I publish a stream using NetStream.publish("streamname",
    "record") the FMS:
1.- opens the file to read
2.- query all the attributes of the file (using the handle).
I return size '0' (the file is empty).
3.- tries to read 294912 bytes.
4.- the file is empty, so I tell the FMS that I've read 0
    bytes.
    5.- closes the file
6.- queries all the attributes of the file (using the name).
7.- open the file to read & write
    8.- queries again the file.
9.- tries to read 294912 bytes, but the file is empty.
    10.- closes the file.
    The client gets 'NetStream.Record.NoAccess'.
I don't know what the FMS is expecting from the File Plugin.
I'm trying to follow the documentation and the examples, but it
    doesn't work.
    Any clues?
    Thanks,
    Jorge

The file plug-in works fine in publishing case. Just use
provided FMS sample and you will be able to record publishing file
using external plug-in. Do not modify read by returning 0 since FMS
expects flv file header 13 bytes. Actually in publishing case you
do not needed to modify anything since in that case FMS passing
data to you in write request and you could post that data anywhere
    you want.

  • Direct X plugs come up as "unsupported"

    Hey everyone-
For some reason, my Sony direct x plugins are showing up as unsupported on my work computer, but at home, they shows up fine. I'm running AA 1.5, and I've refreshed the fx list multiple times. I even tried recreating the preferences folder, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

    Don't know absolutely, but...
If you are running a W7 machine at work, you will almost certainly have run into permissions problems with DX. Apparently the thing you are supposed to do with most of them is to log in as administrator, right-click on the installer and select the 'run as administrator' option. If you don't do this the permissions don't get registered properly. If you ever see a message saying "Failed to set data for Name", this is what's caused it.

  • Genius Mixes are really strange

Hi there, I am wondering how these Genius Mixes are born:
If you look closely there are two Hip-Hop/Rap Mixes, and the second is - you can guess it - NOT Hip-Hop or Rap, containing Soundtracks of course.
My brother uses my iTunes Match Account so the Database is identical. He is not experiencing this error and have a total different set of Mixes.
I can only remove a Genius Mix and restore it afterwards. Disable Genius and Match and enable it again won't change anything.
Or maybe somebody of you know how to reset collected Data for the used to generate these Mixes.
Using both the newest Version of iTunes available (12.0.1.26) but my issue have been around since 1-2 years.

  • Since latest upgrade I cannot "print" or show "print preview" from any web page. This is true of both of my printers and I have followed directions on plug-ins and have reinstalled Firefox etc. I am about ready to switch to Internet Explorer! w

Since upgrading Firefox, it doesn't respond when I click on print and/or print preview while displaying web pages.. No error message, just no response. I tried using both my printers..a HP and a Canon and get no results with either. I have no problem printing from any other place (including "Print" instructions within web pages, usually). I have recently upgraded my desktop (Dell Vostro 220) to Windows 7 and it went smoothly. The Firefox upgrade came at about the same time, so I don't know if Windows 7 is part of the problem. I need be able to print from the screen of web pages!

Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article [[Firefox prints incorrectly]]? There is some good troubleshooting information in there. I would suggest that you try resetting your print settings.

  • Panning

    Good mornin'
Okay, this is a question about panning. I am trying to produce some relatively severe panning effects with a guitar and I am using automation to pan from hard left to hard right. It does not sound right. I am still getting way to much signal in the opposite side. For example, even though I am panned hard left I still get signal in the right speaker, both on monitor and head phones. There is some audible shift but it seems more like a volume alteration than a pan.
I have read some for past questions regarding this. My set up is as follows, logic outputs to my Presonus Firestudio, L+R mains go to small monitors, they are hooked up properly. I also route signal to two PA speakers, via left and right inputs to on stereo channel on a mixer. Is my panning problem in my set up or is the case where I need to use the " directional mixer plug-in" which, to be honest I have not even noticed before. Is it a true plugin available through the plug-in menu?
Thanks for any help you can give. I would really like to get this panning issue resolved.

Your answer is in your original post and it lies with the use of the Directional Mixer plug-in, which, if I recall correctly, is available in the "Helper" section of the plug-ins.
The reason it sounds like a volume shift to you is because that is indeed what it is. On a stereo track in Logic, the pan knob is actually magically transformed into a balance knob. Strange but true. Mono, totally fine. Stereo, not so much. Slap that directional mixer plug-in on there and use that and you'll notice the golden difference.
There are also third-party plugs that work well for this, too, such as Free G from Sonalksis, but Logic's built-in Directional Mixer plug should do you just fine!

  • How do I set up an MS Stereo Pair in Logic 7?

So we are now dabbling into the MS Stereo pair for our recording tech class and I can't seem to find an easy way of doing this. Any suggestions? I can't find a real time phase inversion plug-in or button anywhere other than going through the wave editor and doing it that way, which doesnt help much. Pro Tools and DP for instance have plug-ins that do the 180 degrees out of phase type switchup. Anything like that in Logic... still can't find one. Is there a free downloadable one that some of you out there prefer? Thanks!
    ~trevor

I use MS all the time. Put an MS setup in front of the drumkit about 4-6 feet away pointing right between the kick and snare. You can change the width later to taste.
Yes, all you need to do is setup a stereo track and put the direction mixer plug in the first slot with the MS button clicked on. It does all the decoding for you. The only thing you need to make sure of is that you have the inputs set properly. If you've got the inputs set to Input 1-2, you need to have the mid mic on input 1 and the side mic on input 2.

  • Left and Right Channels: Deleting, merging, copying, panning...etc

Back when I used Windows, I used Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition) and I knew how to do anything I needed to to any channel. Now that I'm using Mac and Logic Pro...I'm clueless.
What I want to do is to mix 50% of a left channel into a right channel (or vice versa) and mess around with channels that way. I also want to be able to completely silence one of the channels and pan. Any insight? A few hours of reading the manual, searching the forum, and trial and error has done me no good.

You have to create split stero files and seperate them. Here is the link to a thread where I described the procedure:

You can also try the Direction Mixer Plug In from the Imaging folder...

  • Problems with stereo audio tracks

I'm recording from an external synthesizer, and it sounds really weak when I record in mono. So I switch over to stereo, where I record on Audio 1 on the track list (as it now represents the left side, while Audio 2 on the track list represents the right).
After recording, I copy the recorded region onto Audio 2 to create the stereo effect (i.e. Audio 1 = left side, Audio 2 = right side). Audio 2 is controlled by stereo object "Track 1-2," which is set in Audio 1 (where I originally recorded the external sound).
    But...
My problem is I'm not hearing any sound on the right side, or at all when I copy and paste the recorded region from Audio 1 to Audio 2. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I have to set the parameters so that Audio 2 actually plays the right side of my "Track 1-2" stereo set-up from Audio 1.
    Thanks for any help!

1: if something is stereo record it as stereo and if mono record as mono
2: recording mono and changing it to stereo won't make sense because its the same channel on two sides it'll still sound mono
3: recording stereo then switching the channel to mono is not a good idea because if the the both sides are phase then it'll sound weird because you'll only get the both soft sides in the centre or both loud sides in the centre
I'll rather use direct mixer plug-in for this type of job or I'll force split the stereo file then put them on two separate tracks then centre the pan on both tracks
my English is not that good but i hope you got what i mean
or get a cable which is 1 stereo 6.5 jack to two RCA left and right or two Mono 6.5 Jacks left and right
this way headphone out from the external gear to two channels (unbalanced) in your interface to logic
then select which input they are then hit record
doing this way will make sure anything you hear in headphone is what ever you'll record

  • Center Channel Extraction/Isolation in Logic 8?

Is there an easy way to extract or isolate the center channel of a stereo file in Logic 8. I have figured out a rigged method for extraction by bouncing the mp3 as a split stereo file, inverting one half, and then bouncing it again as a normal stereo. This is pretty inefficient, and I still haven't been able to figure out how to combine this file with the center channel missing back onto the original to leave only the center. I know there are basic programs out there like GoldWave that can do this very simply. Surely Logic has this function too! Please help as the manual is mute on the subject.

Easiest way is to insert the Direction Mixer plug-in, set it to MS mode and select only the Right side of the stereo output on the channel strip mono/stereo select button.
Of course that gives you center only, but playing through one side of your stereo image. ;o)
Then you need to insert a Gain plug-in after it and set it to "mono".
Does that do what you need it to do?

  • Mono-Stereo monitoring issue

I have found that when I mix things they sound right in my monitoring system, but elsewhere once I've burned them to a disc the information that was panned hard left and right seemed to be lost.
Did a test with a cd straight from the mac audio output, through a stereo aux input in logic, one panned all the way left, the other right, and it sounded wonderful, but when I panned them both center the harsh midrange and overall volume went up 30%. A comfortable listening level in stereo was unbearable in mono.
What can I do about this? And also, when I switch from mono to stereo on my master 1+2 out I can tell no difference and it remains in stereo, the button is not doing anything. Is there a setup issue? enhanced stereo? Anything?
Additional testing, I listened to a solo voice track in the center and it was loud, but when panned to either side it cut the level in half. Help.

this is all normal - and on any DAW - not just logic.
try song settings> audio> pan law. change this to -3db comp.
this will change the balance when monitoring in logic and hence after a bounce will be same on the file as well.
i use the direction mixer plug on the master bus set to 0.0 - this is true mono.
the channel button doesn't seem to change anything.
when summing to mono it is normal for the center to boost up 3db and the sides to drop the same.
