Directional feather

Is there anyway to increase the transition between hard and soft edges in InDesign CS3? I find that the directional feather leaves a harsh line -- there isn't enough transition between the 2, even if I increase the feather amount considerably. My only solution --which doesn't always work--is to use regular feathering instead, because it's much softer. But even this leaves a line, albeit more subtle.
Is there any way to soften the transition even more?
The purpose: placement of text on top of images and wanting text box colors to match image background colors as much as possible.

What you're looking at is the following:
A screened-back, feathered box running along the bottom of the image. Filled with light-beige to match rocks in background and enable placement of text. Opacity 80%. I feathered the top of the box wanting it to blend smoothly into the rocks. After many attempts, this was the best I could come up with. Instead of an initial 12mm feather, I upped it to 30mm. The end result is not bad, but even with this huge feather, there's still a line of demarcation. The visible rectangle shows an area where the line of demarcation is strongest.
What can I do to eliminate this line completely? Is this even doable?

I have a group of vectors that i want to feather from 1 side, if i create a clipping mask around them all and feather that, no matter where i position the objects within the clipping mask the feather still effects them directly and doesnt just feather from the edge of the clipping mask like i thought it would.

However, from reading through the forums, it sounds like things are a lot better since '08 (I must have been on a hiatus from video production during that iteration of the program!)...

Questions on the Effects settings

Well, the next thing that somewhat throws me is the use of the special effects. For example, when I clicked on the special effects for a particular object it always comes up with Bevel and Emboss and Directional Feather checked. I typically have to uncheck those parameters.
Additionally, clicking on drop shadow has always been a source of confusion to me. I just cannot get the correct distance or size to typically come up with a drop shadow that looks good, especially on text.
Therefore, I have a few questions that possibly you experts can help me on:
Q1.     Is there a way to reset the parameters in effects dialog box to the defaults?
Q2.     Typically what parameters do you all use to have nice-looking drop shadows for text? Mine always appear to be cloudy and just don't have the clarity. I had to mess around and over and over trying to get something that looks nice. Then the next time I have to do something I forget what I did the first time. You would think that I would take a picture of the properties settings for drop shadow and save it by my computer!
Q3. When you are trying to do a drop shadow for text, do you typically set the settings drop-down box to "Text" or do you just leave it on the default setting "Object"?
Q4.     Do you know of a script that I could run whenever I wanted to apply the Drop Shadow to Text?
Well, I guess that's all for now, but I know for sure that when I submit this I will remember something else that I wanted to ask.

Hi Bob.
It sounds like you set the effects with nothing open, which is what you need to do (unset them with nothing open) to restore the default to not having them. Most defaults are set this way. If a document is open with nothing selected, you youare creating a new default for the document. If no docs are open you are creating a default for all new work, but existing documents will not be affected.
In a similar vein, if you get a drop shadow you like, write down the numbers and you can set this as the default value (don't forget to uncheck the box for drop sahdow when you're done or it will be applied to everything). You could also save the settings as an object style.
Whether you set the shadow to oject or text would depend, I think on the circumstance and whether one does things you don't like.

Ok I'm stupid: How to search

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I can't figure out these new forums. After going through the ugly process below, I'd like to see:
- On the initial page, a way to specify that I only want to search the forum I'm already in.
- On the initial page of the forum a Help button for search help. Somewhere.
- Please don't make me go through the pain of refinding my chosen forum in the Where drop-down list.
- Consistent use of defined terms. The search result shows me "Items". I think those are also called "Discussions".
For those who want to see how stupid I really am, here's a play by play so far....
Got myself to the Illustrator forum, no problem. I don't see my problem listed on the first page here. Hmmm, how do I search? Best to read the instructions. Is there a "Newbies Search Help" button somewhere? Anywhere? Nope. Well, guess I'll forge ahead. Here's a "Search Forums" blank. I'll type "feather". Let's see, 198 results. Cool. Here's a possibility: "directional feather". I'll read that... no wait. It's in the InDesign forum! I started out in the Illustrator forum, why am I seeing InDesign answers?
Well, the little sidebar says "You can choose to search all content or filter it by content type". (Hmm, I didn't see a filter when I first typed in my search criteria. Would have been handy there.) Guess on this page now I do have a "sort by" filter. Relevance, Rating, Subject, Date. No mention of sort by Forum. Well, there's a More Options link under the Search bar now, I'll try that. (Wonder why that wasn't available when I first started searching.) It wants to know What. Well, I want to search the Illustrator Forum. Should I take off the checkbox for Discussions and People? No... I think I want to search Discussions. Just in the Illustrator forum, but hopefully it will figure that out. OK, let's turn off the other two checkboxes. Next question: When. I don't care. All is fine. Now it wants to know WHERE? Hey, I STARTED OUT IN THE ILLUSTRATOR FORUM. Ok Ok, I'll choose it again in the list. Adobe Illustrator. Wow there are a lot of entries under "A". Indented entries, too. No, it must be under "I". I'll just keep scrolling down... wow, this is taking forever. Let's grab the scroll bar... Whoops, I went past. Illustrator, there we are. Next question. Who? I don't care.
OK, where's the button I press to go ahead with my search? Hmmm. Must be next to the "search forums blank at the top again--- oh no, don't touch that! I think I almost searched for the phrase "search forums". OK, there's a Search button next to the "Search for" blank, which still contains the word "feather". Whew. 28 results. I think they're all for Illustrator.
I wonder if there is a way to open one of the items (I think they're called Discussions although it doesn't call them that here) without losing this "collection." Gosh, I wish there was a Help button. But I do see a "Search Tips" link. Dare I? Well it's mostly about the particulars of searching for certain words. No real instructions for us newbies. I'll read the three easiest steps: Yep. Looks like choosing my forum from the "where" dropdown list is the only way to tell it that I do indeed want my search to be enacted only within the forum I was originally in...

[CS3/4, JS] Apply feather using an object style

I was hoping to apply transparency effects via an object style using this:
myObjectStyle.objectStyleContentEffectsCategorySettings.enableFeather = true;
But "Object does not support the property or method..." etc.
I'd be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Yes, I had got that far by stumbling blindly through the undergrowth, but it still seems to leave feather switched off, according to the Object Styles Panel, and my fumbling attempts to adjust choke, noise, etc. do not seem to have any effect, so I think it really must be switched off. What gave you the impression that that line was successfully switching feather on?
Partly, my difficulties stem from the fact that I find the Extendscript Toolkit CS4 Object Model Viewer incomprehensible. I mean, take a look at the picture below. What is "Object Model Object Model Object Model Object Model", supposed to mean, and why is every version of InDesign labelled "CS4"?

Feather Error in batch saving

I am trying to save a bunch of open edited files to a new folder without having to select "save as", "folder", etc.. for each individual file, as this takes forever. My knowledge base in photoshop is still in the very early phases (I'm using CS5)
I Googled how to do it and followed the directions of : file -> action -> batch -> source(all open files) & then selected the folder I wanted to save them to. When I then go to run the command I get: The command “Feather” is not currently available" for every photo. What am I doing wrong/how do I fix this?

I feel that it could be Authorization issue, you don't have sufficient authorization to do.

Applying feather on image

Hi,
I have been using feather on image photo to create the all corner faded edges however after I upgraded to ver CS6, I encounter this problem when I applying the same method using feather (radius: 15-20) on the image photo and did an inverse, a warning message popped out "Warning: no pixels are more than 50% selected the selection edges will not be visible". Hence, cannot apply any feather on the image, can explain why is this so? My image is a full solid color layer.

Before you inverted the selection, the feather was such that no part of the image was 'less' than 50% selected, so that after you tried to invert the selection, no part was more than 50% and it was unable to continue. But that is nothing to worry about. Just use one of any number of work-arounds to make your fether work the way you want it to, and a good way to do that is to make it controllable, and adjustable.
I prefer to use Layer masks, so that you can use the Masks Properties to adjust the mask. You could do this with a Curves or Levels Adjustment layer, to darken or lighten the corners as per your requirments. Then use the Eliptical marquee tool to create an oval selection, and with the layer mask selected, fill with black. Now turn off the selection (Ctrl/Cmd d) and apply Gaussian blur to feather the black oval.
With the mask selected you can now use the Mask Properties panel to fine tune the mask. If it is too thin use Levels directly to the mask to harden the feather. Free Transform will make it bigger or smaller. Note Free Transform will not work if you have black on the outside of the mask, but you could temporarily invert the mask to get round that.

Ah, sorry, I assumed too much. CC Cylinder requires a small object on a large layer. There are no ballistics settings for any of this feather stuff, you create it.
Draw a storyboard of your motion path, what does this falling object do and where does it go on the screen?
Does it swoop and pause? Imagine a falling leaf. Suggest you buy a copy of FORREST GUMP to deconstruct the feather animation effects.
Draw that motion path using position keyframes and remember that to create a pause at the top of an arc you need two keyframes.
(You can complicate this by using a 3D space so your feather moves toward and away from the camera but this can be simulated by scaling your cylinder layer.)
When you get the movement roughed out, you can start playing with the rotation settings for the cylinder object. You will attempt to orient the intrinsic movement of the cylinder with the implied air currents and directional changes. For instance, if the feather is climbing an arc, the rotation will follow the trajectory but at the top of the arc, the feather will pause while the rotation flips it over and then it accelerates in a fall as the feather points downward.
This isn't easy. Nothing in After Effects is easy. But it's direct an fairly intuitive when you start thinking about what a light object will do when it becomes a glider. You just need to understand the implied physics and ballistics. Attempting to make it "real" is likely to make the effect appear overworked.

Complex mask renders look blocky in the feather region

Has anyone ever had a multi point mask that just renders a pattern in the feather region? It doesn't happen on simple masks with less than 6 points or so. This footage was originally edited in Premiere and then sent to Speedgrade. This is a recurring issue on this system. Also, in this case Speedgrade crashed almost immediately after I took this shot.

I direct link Speedgrade from Premiere, apply masks but never seen that abnormality in your feather region. However, for my complex masks I strickly use Speedgrade in ircp projects. I was trying to duplicate your abnormality and did not succeed. I even saved the complex masks from the ircp and applied as lumetri in a prproj direct link to Speedgrade (which I don't recommend with respect to proper workflow - my test).
I did get abnormalities with lumetri in Premiere when I used the masks in Premiere - as in the ellipse mask or maybe it was the free draw bezier to mask the Speedgrade lumetr. I added some points and feathered out - did not like the abnormalities in the feather region and trashed the idea.
I do add an adjustment layers in Premiere which I add my lumetri to in Speedgrade.
In Speedgrade ircp projects, my current sample has 4 layers, 3 of those layers are masks, where the masks have between 20 to 40 points and double that for feathering. My Speedgrade crashes constantly while building masks and I am forced to save constantly. If I move to fast in Speedgrade the result is 'crash'. Sometimes I stop to admire the work Speedgrade does and then move for the save button and 'crash'.
My point is - I have never seen that abnormality in my Speedgrade projects. I did think I saw it in my current sample, but it was a tiny spot. It was a beach line, where my two masks met and the feather region overlapped - and the tiny spot was a sun-faded dead stump on the shore line - seeming to be over-exposed and Speedgrade trying to tell me I was stripping pixels seemed to be. That sample no longer exists , as I reversed the one mask and worked at things from a different direction.
I have no problems with Speedgrade - I love what Speedgrade does to adding, enhancing, changing color,,,,,

After delete file from documents the direct link still alive.

I upload a image to the style libary folder, then i publish the file and delete him BUT the direct link to the image still work.
I try to upload anther image with the some name but when i try to browse the direct link i get to deleted file.
If i upload a image and delete it before i publish the file I don't have this problem.
I try to flush the blob cache with this commends:

To check if there is cache issue, please access the url in another PC to see if the issue persists. You could also open style library in SharePoint designer to double confirm it.
In addition, if you click the ellipsis of the image item, there will be a preview panel to show the picture, is it the newly upload one?

As far as printing to devices not all devices support Bluetooth. Many devices support Bonjour protocal, IPP. The main print port is 9100. Additionally you can see what IO protocols are supported on a product by looking at the EWS (Embedded WebServer) there should be a networking page with that information. Port 9100 is your basic print port and different devices will support different formats (PDF, JPEG, PCL5, PCL6). If there is an API you can find (i am not familiar with J2ME availible calls, then you can use those and send the data to port 9100. Again that is the basic path most printers will accept. not all devices support bonjour not all device support bluetooth etc... Hope that helps and good luck.

Is there a DIRECT link between SD schedule lines and delivery lines?

Is there a direct link (db table) between schedule lines on a sales order (VBEP) and the delivery lines (LIPS)?
Is there a function module to retrieve the data?
Example-
One order line with 3 schedule lines.
Each schedule line is for 2 units (total of 6 units).
Three deliveries made. 1st is for 2 units, 2nd is for 1 unit (backorder), 3rd is for 3 units.
You can use document flow (table VBFA) or examine the SD document in the delivery line (LIPS) and link the delivery line to the order line. The schedule line already references the order line.
I am using math to decrement the schedule lines used and make the link between VBEP and LIPS. It works fine. I need four records back....
1st schedule line for 2 units uses delivery 123
2nd schedule line for 1 unit (partial) uses delivery 124
2nd schedule line for 1 unit (partial) uses delivery 125
3rd schedule line for 2 units uses delivery 125
Like I said, it works. Just wondering if I missed a more direct link.

As far as Db link is concern , I dont remember exactly , but 3 years before I had written a report which see Sales order schedule lines and devilry note lines against sales order. If you see process wise. when ever you create PO ( production order you assign some qty using 101 movement type .. and against production order you also give sales order . When you do delivery ( run seclude run ) it delivers against that material number , its movement is 601 ...
but I remember theres a link between these tables, VBAP,VBFA AND VBEP , LIPS ... against every sales order you can see sales invoice ( VBRP,VBRK) and you can also see your delivery note number in document flow .
I hope thisll give you some guide line, as right now I can not tell you the exact business process but I remember I written a report in SD 4 years before , in which they required Delivery against production order and sales order ... One more thing you also have production order reference on delivery item number. ( field :Empst ) . I think in my project they were maintaining this field .

Print a report from Application Express direct to a CUPS Printer

Hi all, I'm new to this technology, is it possible to print a report from Application Express directly to a CUPS Printer? Can someone tell me in laymans terms how to do it? I find the terminology and documentation less than helpful.

BI Publisher handles submitting reports directly to a CUPS printer. However, the APEX integration doesn't currently integrate with that portion of BI Publisher.
Here's an options:
Use the Java API of BI Publisher to build a custom Java program that would do this for you. Delivering to CUPS is part of the Java API.
