Directions towards Adobe Flex/ AIR

Hi all,
I am an ABAP developer for 7 odd years and dabbled a bit in ABAP web dynpro, however have not worked on Java or .Net languages. I am keen to work on Adobe Flex and using it as a UI for SAP applications.
Needed advise on where I can start to study up on Adobe Flex considering my back ground.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Cheers,
Aditya

Hi,
When you say Air setting do you mean creating an Air App ?
If so when you select new flex project from the menu you have a choice to have an AIR app or a Flex app.
You can also change an existing Flex app to an AIR app but not the other way around. This is done by right clicking on the project in the package explorer panel and selecting change "project type".

  • Adobe Flex/AIR Photo Booth Software

    Hi,
I hope everyone is doing well.
Is it possible to build a Photo Booth software like
    http://www.photoboof.com/
    http://sparkbooth.com/features/
    etc. using Adobe Flex/AIR ?
I know that we can build desktop applications using Flex/AIR. But I have a very little experience in building desktop applications. Most of the times I had worked on web applications. The Photo Booth software demands to detect digital camera connected to computer/Laptop and then work on the basis of what camera captures. It is like creating a web application that works with media server and
use computer/laptop webcam. Please guide me how can I start or plan for this software.

From What I've found.. it seems 3ivx or Perian could cause this problem. A friend had this issue and deleted 3ivx and it fixed his crashes. Alternatively, some folks are reporting that turning off 32-bit mode (Get Info) for Photobooth has also fixed, although this was already turned off in my friend's case. Or if you have iGlasses installed.

  • Java API for Adobe Flex(AIR and Browser)

    Hello Community,
Sometime ago i started the project located at: : http://code.google.com/p/gwt4air/ , wich primary goal was to bring another approach on writing AIR application by providing a Java API for the AIR API. On top of that i added support for PDF and Excel generation using Java.
I m glad to announce that  the project  will now add support for the Flex Framework
I wrote a post about it on the main page.
The Idea behind it is to give Java Developers a more simple way to write Flex Application by leaveraing a swing like API.
I hope this project will be a good alternative to the MXML+ ActionScript approach and looking for people willing to join the project.
    Regards,
    Alain

Good question, I'd like to know this myself. 4.5 has a huge number of changes since 4.0.

Thanks, Flex harUI, for the direction in regards to isolating build changes. That aside (still working on it), can you offer any direction in regards to my original question on SDK and AIR compatibility? I'm specifically looking for a version compatibility mapping or anything that definitively states, "Flex SDK x.y.z works with the following versions of AIR". This information is crucial for us in order to more specifically plan our own roadmap built upon these two frameworks as we consider both existing installations of our software and future distributions.

  • Adobe AIR Needed on Android / iOS to Run Adobe Flex Apps

    Hi all,
I want to confirm if the user has to install Adobe AIR before launching Adobe Flex apps on Android and iOS Devices. Is there any way that we could embedd Adobe AIR setup in the app file so that the user dont have to hastle in installing Adobe AIR.
    Taimur

It gives you only three options:
Signed packages for each target platform.
Signed AIR package for installation on desktop.
Intermediate AIRI package that must be signed later.
For mobile apps, we need to select the first option to get the .apk and .ipa file as the second option would generate .air file. None of the options offer to package AIR runtime. Only the first option gives you the option on NEXT window to include the download link of AIR Runtime.
If i am wrong, kindly point me to that specific checkbox.
OR do i have to put Runtime.apk in the assets folder of my source code so that it gets packaged?

  • Oracle APEX versus Adobe Flex on AIR

    Hi
I need advantages and disadvantages Oracle APEX versus Adobe Flex on AIR. I don't know Adobe and need your help. (we fight about our potential customer).
    Project:
40 users insert own actvities into database. Supervisor analyse this info (reports, charts). Users connect to app via mobile phone EDGE using laptop.
    Regards

    Hello again,
From the end-user perspective, FLEX applicatoins are more graphic in nature, in that they are truly graphic. APEX (at least through 3.2) generates a standard HTML type of web page. You can do graphics type of code, but Flex creates applications that will only run with Adobe tools. Flex generates an HTML page, but it calls a .swf file and plays that.
Unless it is critical that you have that fully graphic interface (a .swf file type of image that plays), standard HTML is much better. You can still generate graphs, charts and such; incorporate images in your page and all the things that standard web pages have.
With APEX, your users will see a standard HTML web-page type of interface, which most users today know how to use and expect.
    Thanks,
    Don.

  • Adobe Flex Mobile + AIR - Custom iOS Build Setting

I am building some Adobe Flex Mobile application using Flex 4.6.0 + AIR 3.5 only for iOS
This app involves some iOS Native Extension created also by me.
The thing is that this ANE uses some third party framework (GD.framework from Good Dynamics Technology). That framework requires GD FIPS linker to be used, and for that, i need to set some custom build settings in a .xcconfig file, with this content:
    FIPS_PACKAGE=$(CURRENT_ARCH).sdk LDPLUSPLUS=/Good Technology/Good.platform/FIPS_module/$FIPS_PACKAGE/bin/gd_fipsld LD=/Good Technology/Good.platform/FIPS_module/$FIPS_PACKAGE/bin/gd_fipsld
The ANE compiles OK, but then, I add the ANE to the app, I compile the app, but when I launch the app, it crashes because the FIPS linker was not properly got set on my Flex Mobile project.
    So, my question is:
Is there a way to set the above configuration on my project like somebody would do in a Xcode project?
    Regards!

I see your key as a reserved key for iOS. I haven't tested it myself but here's the keys you cannot change. Sure enough, MinimumOSVersion is reserved.

  • How to read http cookies from adobe desktop Air app using flex/flash builder in AS 3.0 ??

Im developing Adobe desktop air app where i need to read the session id from the cookie of a http request.
I have found a property called URLRequest.manageCookies supported by AIR so i Hope there should be a way to read the cookies as well. Im Using Flash Builder 4.5
    Please provide any reference code or guide me for this research;
searched a lot regarding on this web.
Most results lead to local shared object or reading cookies fr a webpage using javascript and ExternalInterface.
I want to read http cookies not Local shared Object and in a desktop AIR application.
    Im using Flash builder 4.5

  • Interactive medical report with Flex/AIR, XML, U3D and PDF

    Hello,
I am computer science student and during my master thesis I want to program an interactive medical report which should include some 3D models (U3D) and which should provide the following options:
Interactive manipulation of the 3D models
Typing in a structured medical report
Loading of a XML file with additional information
Loading of medical image data (jpg images)
At best, only one pdf file as resulting report
And: A nice user interface (I like the interface elements of Flex...)
I think, the best way is a pdf file which includes all the needed data. The problem is that I don't know exactly what software combination fulfills my requirements... I read some things about Adobe Flex and AIR and the U3D format and I suppose, the great interface builder "Flash Builder 4" might be useful to generate a nice user interface. BUT: I was not able to find out, how to include U3D in Flex/AIR.
Then I found the nice pdf library iText (http://itextpdf.com/examples/index.php?page=chapters) which is able to produce a pdf file from a swf file and to include a U3D-model with an additional JavaScript file for manipulations.
BUT again: If I have a swf flash file with the nice user interface (generated with the Flash Builder), how can I access the U3D model in the final pdf document? Imagine: I click on a "rotate" button in the swf and then the U3D-Model in the pdf should rotate...
Ok, as you can see, it is a complex szenario.
    My questions summarized:
What, in your opinion, is the best technology for my task? Flex? AIR?
How can I import the U3D-models? Should I use PaperVision, Sandy3D or something else?
Is there a way to save user inputs directly in the pdf file, or as new pdf file or as xml file?
What is the best way to produce the user interface? Flashbuilder, or maybe a html container with "normal" html interface elements and then the events communication between JavaScript and ActionScript?
How can I export all the stuff to one pdf document? Should I use iText?
    Best regards,
    Steven

Thanks for making my point - perfect is the enemy of good.  We tolerate less capable, less perfect system that are in place now, because of the false expectation that it should be perfect.  Incremental improvements are rejected, because they are not perfect.  Even an imperfect algorithm can find 'Broken' as a common thread in your example, and highlight them for the clinician to evaluate their impact on the current treatment.  This no less likely to miss the connection than a clinician trying to scan through handwritten notes, in the 5 - 10 minutes he/she has to interact with the patient and determine what to do.
Because of legal concerns, incremental but imperfect improvements don't get implemented, so nothing ever moves forward.  Imagine if after the Wright Brothers first flight, no improvements were considered acceptable unless they completely eliminated the risk of failure - there wouldn't be any airlines to go bankrupt today!
For the most part, IT has focused on activities where 'perfect' is achievable.  Accounting in its various forms have been the primary focus of most IT systems.  In that area, the vocabulary is very limited, well defined, and consistent.  A debit is always a debit, and a credit is always a credit.  Medicine is completely different. It is much larger in scope, poorly defined, the vocabularies are mostly non-existent, and where they exist are incomplete and inconsistent.  Despite the huge leaps forward in the last century, there is still more unknown than known about how and why the body works.  This environment makes most individuals trained in IT uncomfortable.  Until we learn how to deal with 'fuzzy', Healthcare IT is going to be limited to the billing and collection functions that it mostly accomplishes today.

  • Flex, Air, Flash, Flash builder, ASC2.0

After the decision of moving Flex to apache, and with the release of Flash builder 4.7 I am getting a bit confused about what is what anymore.
Flex development is moving to apache, yet the compilers, packaging tools and more seem to live inside the Flex SDK.
Air SDK has previously gone on top of the Flex SDK and seems to be an addon on the Flex SDK.
However in flash builder 4.7, AIR SDK is set as the compiler even for web projects, although the result is a .swf file with no dependency on AIR.
On top of things now you can get AIR SDK with ASC2.0 that still can build web applications (non-air)
I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but Isn't this getting a bit complicated and terminologies getting mixed up?
Am I right to assume that things are moving towards the following:
AIR SDK - Compiler and core framework/Api for AS3 code that targets either web(swf), air or air mobile (this would be bundled with Flash builder), have command line tools, to build & package applications.
FLEX SDK - Frameworks for RIA apps (mxml files etc), but ultimately not necessery unless your doing those kinds of apps.

In the Flex/Flash world, everything eventually gets compiled to SWF despite how the source is written.  SWF consists of media assets as well as bytecode that can be executed.  This is very similar to the Windows world where EXE/DLL files may be a compiled product of C++, VB, Delphi, etc code.
ASC 2.0 is a new compiler that produces more optimal bytecode.  While Flash is fast, the current ActionScript compiler does not produce good enough bytecodes that gets the best out of Flash player.
Adobe AIR provides additional capabilities outside of Flash Player to make the applications more desktop friendly.  Flash Player is constrainted by browser security, therefore capabilities such as are local file read/write are limited.  While the security makes sense, when it comes to desktop applications where security model is different, it makes sense to have extentions that enrich the user experience.  Throughout the years, besides API additions, AIR grows to include capabilities such as packaging SWFs for mobile devices.
Flex is just a framework that's designed to make building business applications easier.  However, business applications can be built without Flex framework.
p.s.  I am not an Adobe employee, but I have been trying to clear this confusion for many people.  It seems that Adobe's PR is not keen on communicating with developers, while they are awesome in terms of catering creative professionals.

  • Is it possible to converted Presenter 7 to a FLEX / AIR desktop app?

I have an Adobe Presenter 7 course with multiple modules.  These are PowerPoint files converted to flash with Presenter 7.  I want to make them available as desktop applications by using Flex / Air.  Can this be done?
I am a novice in these applications, but a quick learner.  Please let me know if it is possible and kindly point me in the right direction.  Thanks for your help.
    Bob

Wow, thanks so much Bob - that is some absolutely fantastic information.
I converted one of my Presenter courses to a fully functional EXE file in about 5 minutes with the SWF Maestro Exe trial!  I have been trying for years to find a solution to turn my Presenter files into single, flat file and that seems to do exactly what I need.
Your sample training course is really nice - you did a great job with it!  I know how much work it can be to get the PPT file, transitions and audio to work just right like you have.  I have 15 eLearning files that have hundreds of hours of work on each one!
