Directly connect UCS C-series to External storage

Hi,
I have a customer that is looking for an entry level data centre solution.
I have speced up 2 UCS C240 servers (with 10GB or 8GB FC) and I was wondering whether we can attach directly to external storage from the servers for now and buy a switch in the future.
As replication of their database is an issue, they would like to use external storage. The customer is looking at an IBM V7000. in the following URL -
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/Matrix8.html the V7000 is compatible with the B-series but it's not listed under the C-series. Has anyone used the V7000 with the C-Series? Is there a better option for an entry level external storage array?
Any pointers or help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Georgia

Hello Georgia,
What is the HBA installed on the server ?
The matrix lists supported arrays only for Cisco CNA.

  • URL to connect directly to UCS KVM

Can a KVM be directly connected to?
I know there is the nice "Launch KVM Manager" setup.
But have a client would just like to give URL's to their KVM's and keep their awareness of UCS "limited". URL's to their KVM's would be ideal.
I tried the below and it didn't work, along with just the IP.
    http://<ucs-ip-address>/ucsm/kvm.html

    Craig,
I have tried something like that also and does not work either.
I have even tried with CIMC for the C series in standalone mode but no luck, let me see if I can find a way to do something like that and get back to you later on.

  • Limitations associated with Direct Connecting arrays to UCS FIs.

I understand that in order to direct connect an array to UCS, the FIs have to be put into Switch mode(NPIV).  But once the FI's are in Switch Mode, is it impossible to attach other SAN switches to the fabric interconnects?
It is my understanding that you could accomplish this because it wouldn't be much different then an extended SAN fabric in which an array's traffic would have to travel through 2 FC switches to arrive at a host.  But perhaps I'm missing something.
    Thanks in advance.

You can have directly attached storage and FC switches at the same time, in fact until recently it was required since UCS did not do zoning.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/servers-unified-computing/ucs-infrastructure-ucs-manager-software/116082-config-ucs-das-00.html
The questions is whether you really want to do it that way, I think for 95% of deployments, if not more, end host mode is recommended.
If you're already planning to attach FC switches, best to place storage on them.
Have a look at FlexPod (of Vblock) designs.

  • Nexus 5548 to UCS-C series network connectivity.

    Hi There,
I am new to nexus world, mainly telecom side. I have a situation where a vendor like to deploy two Cisco UCS-C series servers for voice deployment.
Each UCS C240 M3 server has 4 NICs, 2 nics bonded 802.1q will connect to primary nexus 5k switch and other two bonded will connect to secondary nexus switch. we have a vPC domain and no FEXes so we have to connect these two servers directly to Nexus 5ks.
My question is it possible with teamed nics to coonect to 2 different nexus switches?
Can anyone guide me how can I achieve this design? see attached.
    Thanks Much

It will also depend on the Server network settings such as OS, software switch flavor and NIC teaming option on the server.
x- if you run ESXi, then you may check out the following KB article.
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004088
x- if you use N1Kv, then you can use LACP or static port-channeling, but be sure to make it consistent on the upstream switches.
    hope it helps.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.

  • How to connect external storage devices (flash drive) with it

hello dear. I am using this hp webOS-3.0.5 device for last 8 months. It is really a wonderful device to have. But I have some queries regarding it's usage. First can we attach any usb device(external storage devices (flash drive) with it? Second is there any other way to use internet on it without wi-fi connection? Thanks
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I'm afraid the answer is No to both questions.
External storage can be acheived easily using the free 50GB Box.com account included with each touchpad.  This does rely on a good wifi source however, which leads to your other question.
The wifi touchpad needs a wifi signal to go online.  Modern cellphones can act as "wifi hotspots" and can translate a cellular data connection to wifi.  (I do this with my Pre3 and a free program called "FreeTether", a homebrew app).

  • Direct connect to UCS FI from EMC VNX 5300

    Hi,
I'm looking for any configuration recommendations or best practices for configuring a VNX 5300 unified for direct connect to UCS Fabric Interconnects.
The direct connect wil be 10GB on both the file and block side.
Are their any guides or recommendations anyone may have?
I've looked and cannot find much.

    Hi Manuel,
    Two things:
    1) Take a look at the following matrix for the supported version
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/Matrix8.html
    2) Currently the direct attch FC is supported under a restricted to topologies in which the zoning  database is provided from an upstream Cisco MDS 9000 switch or Nexus  5000 or 5500 switch. Hence you would still have to conenct an MDS or a N5K to the FIs for the zoning info.

  • Cannot ping Cisco C series server using direct connect to UCSM

We have connected 2 Cisco C series servers (VIC 1225 Cards) with direct connect to Fabric Interconnects and managed via UCSM but cannot get network working.
Service profiles have been created and pushed with only 1 VLAN and the default VLAN as native but cannot communicate with IP address configured.  Mac address is learnt at the Nexus 5K northbound switches.  Seems to be a VLAN tagging issue somewhere

We do not use the CIMC as the server is all managed from UCSM and the CIMC has to be set to default for this mode
Sorry I was not clear; I mean of course that even with UCSM, your C-series server will get an IP address for CIMC, which is used if you open a KVM session. You should be able to ping this IP address.

  • Fiber Channel Storage Directly Connected to Nexus 5000

Can you connect Fiber Channel SAN storage directly to a Nexus 5000.
I swear I remember that you could not (at least when it first came out) and you had to connect it to a FC SAN switch. The docs look like it can act as a full fledge SAN switch, but it does say "Each Fibre Channel port can be used as a downlink (connected to a server) or as an uplink (to the data center SAN fabric)."
So It sounds like a server can connect to it directly via Fiber Channel, but you still need to connect it to a switch (i.e. data center SAN fabric).
Thanks for any help in clearing up this confusion.
    Joe

You can connect any storage array and get it to work from a protocol perspective. But most storage OSMs have a certification process and you might want to check to see if the storage array you have is tested and certified for direct connect target.

  • Changing a WD External HD from Time Capsule Disk to Direct Connection

I was using a WD 1T hard drive connected to my Time Capsule USB port. It was set up as Allow file sharing with Time Capsule password. I would like to stop using it here and directly connect it to my Macbook Pro (by firewire). When I try to do this, I can see the drive but get a message that I do not have user permissions to access it. Is there a way around this? Do I need to reformat the WD drive in Disk Utility to be able to use it directly again?
    Thank you.

Note: Mac 3 had a single user on it, my son. He was the admin. I created a new non-admin acct and moved all his stuff there (Not sure I did it the right way so it took a long time.). Now I am admin on that Mac. Not sure if that is relevant here (leading to the problem identified above) but thought I would mention it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
The fact that you cannot access the backup now only on this Mac does suggest this is part of the issue. Did you do this before or after the issue with access?
Permissions can be pretty tricky things.. certainly to do backups or to retrieve them from an existing backup created with different user permissions might be a mess.. Pondini is perhaps the only one who can tell you the ins and outs of that.
On the more general note.. lots of people are having issues with USB drive on the TC from Lion.. for many it stops working forever the moment the disk spins down from a reboot.. making it useless.
But it is dog slow for everyone.. The reality is USB is less than half its native speed on the TC cf on the computer.. and it wasn't that fast to begin with.
Plug the hard drive directly into the computer and mount the sparsebundle and see if the TM then can access it.. but you might need to use your admin login not your son's.
Personally if the TC disk is not big enough.. replace the TC with a larger disk version.. or the disk in the present one.. do not use disks hanging off TC. It has enough reliability issues without adding to them.

    Hi Jackson,
Yes its is possible.    Connect the storage array to the fabric interconnects using two 10GB links per storage processor.  Connect each SP to both fabric interconnects and configure the ports on the fabric interconnect as “Appliance” ports from UCSM

The work around is to do the IOM  firmware upgarde.
As teher are several Firmware are associated with the  UCS system how to knwo the dependency and how to know which firmware is compatible with the uCS server.
Please assist me to get teh proper IOM firmware .I opened one TAC and they are telling TAC doesn't support this we have to contact cisco AS team and we don't have cisco AS team contract.

    Dear Walter;
Really appreciated your expert technical advice.
I have one small question as below if you can answer it..
    As per the existing setup..
This UCS system is connected with the EMC storage Model:VMAX-1SE  Version:5876.
We have no idea if   UCS firmware version 2.1(3c) is compatible with the MC storage Model:VMAX-1SE  Version:5876..
I have opened the TAC and also went through the Compatibility matrix where it mentioned as attached and to conatct EMC vendor.
We opened case with EMC they are telling contact Cisco and Cisco TAC telling contact EMC.
IS there any way we can know this?
    Note as per the attachment:
    5. Direct Connect FC/FCoE topologies are supported with this array.
    6. Non-default adapter settings are typically required by storage vendors and found on their support list.
7.Multiple array and switch models supported with UCS by the storage vendor are on their support list.
12.iSCSI Boot is supported Both Appliance and Uplink ports are supported unless otherwise noted.
    26. Supported for NFS/CIFS access via appliance ports on the Fabric Interconnect

  • Connecting the T410s to an external monitor

    1) Excuse the ignorant question but how would you connect the T410s to an external monitor?  The T410s has a DisplayPort port, but what if the monitor does not have a DisplayPort port but an HDMI port?
    2) Which leads into my second question.  How would I connect the T410s to two external monitors?  I guess whatever the answer is to the above question, but connect some kind of a splitter coming out of the T410s DisplayPort port?
    3) And lastly, take a look at this link...
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=19C791A03AF24034A0011B825513BCED&tabname=Gallery
Once you get there, click on T400s below the thumbnails.  If that long link I pasted does not work right, it is the T-series gallery on Lenovo's site.  In one of the pictures, it shows the T400s connected to two external monitors, but does not say how.  They brag at how you can export 2560x1600 to two monitors without the use of a dock.  Is this possible even though the T410s video card tops out at 1440x900?
    Thank you.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you, lead_org.  You've been very helpful.  Last 2 questions hopefully.
    1) Regarding the use of DisplayPort on the Mini Dock Plus, since DisplayPort transmits audio as well as video (unlike the old style VGA which only sent video), if I connected the Mini Dock Plus to the HDMI port of my monitor (using a DP-to-HDMI adapter of course) would I lose audio out coming out of the green miniplug port on the mini dock, since the system might assume I want all audio to go through the DisplayPort cable?  I have seperate external speakers I want to use and not the ones on the monitor.
    2) Do you lose any quality when you connect to an external monitor using a Mini Dock, as opposed to connecting directly from the T410s itself?  The reason I'm asking is that some people claimed that using the green miniplug audio port on the dock generates a much lower volume than if they were to plug the speakers directly into the laptop instead.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • How do I use daqmx to get encoder direction/count on E-series board?

    Hardware:
    PCI-6014
    Labview 7.1
I have a linear actuator and wish to get distance/direction.  The
motor has a quad encoder with phase A and B only.  I connected the
lines according the the E-series, PFI-8 and PFI-6, and ground to
digital ground. I then attempted to design a control with daqmx but
failed.  I have tried the daqmx examples but none were attempting
a reverse in direction.  Most examples given for direction change
are for traditional daq control; i cant make a correlation on what to
use to substite traditional daq with daqmx vi's.
    2 questions:
How do I use daqmx to get encoder direction/count on E-series board?
Are there low pass filter vi's recommended for each phase connection to stabilize data?
    Thanks,
    Wayne Hilburn

    Hello Wayne,
Take a look at the Count Digital Events.vi shipping example.  You can find this in LabVIEW by selecting Help >> Find Examples... then browsing to Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >> Counter Measurements >> Count Digital Events.
If you set the "Count Direction" control to "Externally Controlled", you will be able to count up and down depending on which direction you rotate your encoder.  Make sure you wire Phase A to Ctr0 Source and Phase B to P0.6.  P0.6 is the up/down line for counter 0.
I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you have any further questions.
