Director is better than Flash

The only advantage Flash had over Director was the plugin penetration. Now that plugins are becoming irrelevant, Director should have a grand come back. The problem is the lack of vision in the part of Adobe.
It is beyond me why people still use such unintuitive tool as Flash. I guess is just an aura from its past glory that persists.

Hmm.. Well, maybe it's time to explain what I meant by 'I'm
    working on it'.
I sure am not adobe, or mm, but I'd bet that most of the
    regular list
members care about Director more than anyone at any company.
A couple years back, shortly after mus got discontinued to be
    more precise,
and by not finding any descent networking Xtra, I started
    building one. The
initial goal was to build a socket Xtra that could transfer
    binary strings.
But soon as I got the hang of it, I started adding all the
    stuff of my
personal Director wish list that came to mind. And the Xtra
    evolved beyond
and initial expectation - and timeline for that matter.
The 'official' announcement talked about unicode. But that
    was just the
    first object revealed.
The Xtra includes objects (strings, lists, date, image...)
    that are both
faster and more flexible than their Director's equivalents,
    well as new
objects that aim to include all that windows/c++ has to offer
    for their
    field (socket, services, file/shell...).
It has been a long and mostly lonely journey...
    You can visit
    http://xtrema.rtr.gr/cDown/
    to get an idea.
Now that the core is finished, all experimental objects are
    updated and
added to the pack. The idea is, soon as certain base objects
    are completed,
to produce some freeware apps for advanced tasks (like
    managing services),
in an attempt to give Director back it's good name. I guess
    that at the
time, I'll make a call to any director developer that wishes
    to participate
in such a project to lend a hand (gui / suggestions etc).
Don't forget: If it can be done with c++, it can be done must
    faster, and
with far less debugging, in Director. Long as you can call
    c++ routines that
will give you access to the system functions that is (aka
    Xtras).
As a pro app builder, I find Director to have just one
    drawback. No
multithreading support for lingo scripts. Any number of
    threads can work on
the background (like e.g. getNetText), but there will be
    bottlenecking when
it comes to callbacks. So, building a director based
    enterprise server is
out of the question. But building a game or mid-business
    server capable of
    hosting thousands of clients isn't.
    Regards,
    Harris.

  • Director video better than Quicktime?

This is kind of a weird question but I don't really
understand what's going on. I have a Director (MX) application that
shows a quicktime movie and forms part of a CDExtra package for a
band's album release. The band wanted to add some bonus tracks so,
to squeeze it all onto a CD I had to recompress the video to a
smaller size. During the process (of course) I kept checking the
quality and made it the best for the space available. I was doing
this using the Quicktime (7.0) player.
I've just burned and run up the test CD and the video playing
in the Director app is WAY better quality than what I was seeing
when viewing directly in the QT7 player. Specifically, there are
credits (white on black scrolling) at the end of the video that
were virtually unreadable in QT7 but which are as clear as day in
    the Director app?
What's going on here? I can only assume it's something to do
with display overlay drivers but I've never noticed this before and
it's a little annoying as it probably means I didn't have to sail
so close to the wind to get a decent look.
Anyone got any ideas? It seems odd that the Apple provided
player doesn't show you the best quality possible.
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
Director uses the digital video player that you point it to.
    This dv
player is usually selected by Director based on the extension
    of the
video file. There is one mpeg video xtra that is its own
    player.
How are you playing the dv file? The QT xtra just provides an
    interface
between the Director movie and the QT player that's installed
    on the
user's computer. It has no playback capability of its own.

  • 5530 software performance is better than 5800?

    Guys,
I'm a 5800XM user and and i found recently some of the feature of new released 5530XM is even better than 5800.
    1. no kinetic scrolling in 5800. Really unhappy with this, Scrololing in 5800 is quite inconvenient, the V11 firmware is worst. Why there is no kinetic scrolling in 5800?
    2. camera image quality. 3.2MP camera with carl zeis len, dual flash. Image quality i not comparable with 5530. 5800 image quality is really bad for me. The image capture is like a bit blue'ish. I wash an video on youtube, the image capture by 5530 camera is really much more better than 5800, it's quality is very good.
OMG, i'm sad with this. Can anyone tell me what is the reason of this? Nokia's developer, any problem with the firmware or it is a hardware problem. 5800XM cost higher than 5530XM.

  • FLV quality looks better than F4V, what am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
I exported a small clip as a on2vp6 flv, a h.264 f4v, and a h.264 mp4 file with the adobe media encoder cs4. Each file is the same clip, exported with pretty much the same settings. Resolution: 640x480, 0.5mbps target bit rate, 29.97 fps.
Everything I read says that for a given file and a given bitrate, h.264 should provide better video quality when compared to a h.263 flv file. I would like to know what I am doing wrong, because the h.264 files look worse than the flv file. I have provided download links for a short demo clip in each format.

Why does the clip look better in h.263? It seems that everything I encode at low bitrates looks better in h.263 which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.

Okay, that is true, they are different codecs. But even adobe says:
Q: How does H.264 compare with the current video formats supported in Flash Player?
A: Flash Player supports the Sorenson Spark video codec (based on H.263) and On2 VP6. H.263 is the predecessor of H.264 and was designed for teleconferencing applications, at 64k rates. H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in On2. Factors you should consider when choosing a format include the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.
    at
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:9:Update:H.264#Q:_What_is_H.264.3F
Are there any tricks to getting the h.264 to look "better" than the h.263? Like, the h.264 version of the video doesn't even look close to as good, and I think that the f4v version looks worse than the mp4, which I don't really understand since they are both h.264 files. The footage is from a canon XL2 and the original source is ntsc 720x480. Is there anything special I should be doing for encoding in h.264 instead of h.263. The video is going to be only for the web.

  • What makes iPad better than other tablets

Hi there! i am planning on buying the new iPad 2 but i want to ask and talk about what makes the iPad better than other tablets particularly Android.
Since its first outing the iPad has come from strenght to strenght with featrures and apps only a smartphone (or even a PC) could dream of.
But in the past few months there has been a tsunami of Android tablets vuying to topple Apple's device. with better features like:
    1. Divx support (in some devices)
    2. better front & rear cameras
    3. better multitasking and customisation options
    4. Android being an "open" platform
    5. video chat with ANY similar device (and not confined to only Android)
    6. better bluetooth option and features (like sending files to ANY device and not confined to only Android)
    7. full DLNA support (in almost all devices now)
    ......and the list goes on.
sure it's not a contest and sure some makers have "copied" features from Apple and made it into their own but i still love Apple devices not because of the lack of features but because the technology really works and the OS just flows really smooth.
so, i want to ask you guys....what makes Apple devices such as the iPad 2 special, unique, desirable and better in many ways than an Android device?
what makes the iPad an investment for me and my family?

Don't get me wrong i am fan of Android but i also am a fan of the iPad 2. but i still can't help with the things the device is lacking and lagging behind with with the Android devices.
sure, the iPad is not a Xoom or a Transformer or a Galaxy tab.
sure, the iOS is fluid and smooth and it just works
sure, Honeycomb 3.0 is full of bugs and it freezes more often than not (i heard)
sure, the Apps Store is still miles away when it comes to apps, games, etc. (although i heard it will be overtaken by the Android Markt by this year in terms of sheer numbers but also quality apps designed/dedicated for tablets by next year)
the Android Amrket might not have "rogue" apps or "stealing user data" but doesn't Apple products have that and do that as well?
sure the iPad doesn't support Flash but even though its a battery hogging software you still enjoy the "full" web (the way it was meant to be viewed) on an Android tablet.
sure, the iPad does have a below 1-megapixel camera which is jurassic really.
but it still doesn't hide the facts like what i mentioned on my previous emails.
for the cheapest wifi-only iPad 2 you pay GBP399
the equivalent 7" Galaxy Tab (which came out months before the ipad 2) you pay GBP399 and that's with 3G, better front & rear facing camera, full Divx capability (without the need of an app), full DLNA capability (without the need of a separate device or server), better and more "open" bluetooth, full Flash compatibility amongst others.
basing on my example above can someone tell me without being biased...what makes the iPad 2 better in many ways?

  • Bluetooth stereo headsets - any out there better than S9-HD, 9xxbackbeat

and jaybird? I have owned all three brands in the last month trying to find the best pair possible (thanks to best buys return policy) however, I'm looking for something a little more high end. I can not find any other ones that are higher priced or appear to be better than these "big three" at the moment.
can anyone give me some input of more stereo Bluetooth headsets?
    any help is appriciated, thanks

I just got my S9-HD with the D650. I followed the directions from Motorola to set up the D650 for iPod.
Turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone.
    Plug in the D650.
Put the phone in iPod mode, start a song and press PAUSE.
Then turn on the S9-HD power to put it in search mode.
Let the D650 find the headset and pair it. The light starts flashing slowly when it's paired.
Then, unplug the D650, turn off iPod mode, and go to Settings on the iPhone and turn Bluetooth on.
Restart the S9 headset back in search mode until the iPhone finds it an pairs.
Now, the phone headset works fine. When you plug the D650 in and listen to the iPod (works fine). But when you try to go to the phone mode while the D650 is plugged in, it won't stay in the phone mode. It just pops up and shuts right back down. So it doesn't appear that the phone headset will interrupt the music and allow you to use the phone as long as the D650 is plugged in.
    Any help?

  • The Nano is better than expected

I just loaded music and audiobooks. Art came through. Sound is better than other ipods (by my ear). It is easy to find your spot on audiobooks. This ipod advances audiobooks a few minutes at a time and there is time bar to see where you are. Other ipods jump to the next song. Clocks, calendars, look good. Color is excellent and detailed. I have not tried photos yet.
Nano docks in Bose speaker and Altec Lansing speaker without using the adapter.
The only problem I had was after the computer (windows) said the update was complete, the "do not disconnect" screen on the nano would not go away. I did a reset per the instructions and this fixed the problem.

USB 2 is about as fast as Firewire (at least in bursts: FW has much faster overall through put); but with the Flash memory in the Nano, you are only going to get about 20mbs anyway (even the fast compact flash is 80mbs which is way slower than FW or USB2).
I suspect that there are at least two reasons for the lack of FW on the Nano:
    1. USB 2 significanlty faster than the flash can support, and FW users would be disappointed that FW wasn't any faster; in other words, FW isn't needed.
    2. There is very limited real estate inside the Nano, and an additional interface likely means that something else had to go.
    3. Add firewire would have increased the cost..
I believe the Nano is an incredibly nifty product which changes the game again. What are those Nomad guys going to do now? I mean, after they stop crying.

From your point of view and the framing of your question, Apple does indeed support WIndows better than Mac for the limited issue of iCloud.
    chewy cabeza wrote:
...YET, Leopard and Snow Leopard are NOT iCloud compatible. How can that be justified? Obviously, Apple can make iCloud available to Snow Leopard, but disdains us...
Historically speaking, Apple has rarely gone backwards in its OS development.  Once they have released a new OS with new technology, I can only think of one example of when they backtracked:  They released TrueType technology in System 7 and then released System 6.0.8, which included TrueType technology for continuing System 6 users.
So it is part of their culture to move forward and not backwards.  Other examples:
    •  Inclusion of the then novel SONY 3.5" disk drive in its release of the first Macintosh (and not the industry standard 5.25" drive); after its use in the Lisa and adoption for the Apple II series of computers.
    •  Elimination of the floppy drive completely in the release of the first iMac.
    •  Use of then novel AAC audio compression as "state of the art" compression for the iPod release in 2001 instead of the outdated mp3 standard.
    •  Refusal to allow use of FLASH in iPod Touch/iPhone/iPads.
How could they justify these decisions?  The marketplace justified them for Apple!
So, yes, they could release 10.6.9 with iCloud support.  But why now, if not then?

  • Lumia 920 better than iPhone 5

Looks like Nokia should have waited until after the iPhone 5 was released to announce the 920, would have made the 920 look a whole lot better than it already is!

    Excerpt from SIG:
"The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has officially announced the release of Bluetooth Core Specification 4.0, or rather, revealed the adoption of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology for 4.0. The SIG said that the new specs will open an entirely new market that requires low cost and low power connectivity. Now a small, "coin-cell" battery can power Bluetooth devices, ideal for healthcare, security, home entertainment, and other markets.
The formal announcement stated that v4.0 will feature ultra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption. The technology also features an enhanced range, multi-vendor interoperability, low cost, and the ability to run "for years" on standard coin-cell batteries. The specs also say that the technology supports small data packets transferred at 1 Mbps, 24 bit CRC on all packets, and even provides full AES-128 encryption.
"With today’s announcement the race is on for product designers to be the first to market," said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth SIG. "Bluetooth low energy modules for all sorts of new products may now be qualified – this is an important step towards our goal of enabling new markets with Bluetooth wireless technology. For example, the Continua Health Alliance has already selected Bluetooth low energy technology as a transport for the next version of its guidelines."
The SIG said that the new specs will come in two flavors: dual-mode and single-mode. In dual-mode, Bluetooth low energy functionality is integrated into an existing Classic Bluetooth controller. The single-mode version, ideal for highly integrated and compact devices, uses a lightweight link layer for ultra low power idle mode operation."

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.

  • Open DNS better than Comcast xfinity DNS?

Is OpenDNS better than using Comcast/xfinity's DNS? If yes, how do I switch over?
I go to into Airport Utility and enter in the 2 openDNS numbers, something like 222 and 220, but at the bottom of the page right now (because I am using Comcast's DNS) there's a web address something.comcast.net  Do I need to change that info too? If so, what do I put in that field?
    Thanks!

    How did you add them?
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
