Director network bug: Save As

We have Director MX 2004 installed over an Apple network, and
have one major problem: when a user attempts to SAVE AS, Director
trashes the file completely. When we previously used Netware
servers for user id authentication and storage this problem
didn’t exist. It has arisen since we switched to an Xserve
Apple server connected to a Storevault storage system, and appears
to be a bug in Director – as it is ONLY Director that has
this problem. There is no such problem with any other application,
including Adobe products such as Flash and Photoshop which also use
temporary files.
Is this a known bug – and what can be done about it?
Even if we could disable the Save As option in Director, users
would lose all their work if they started from a file on a drive
for which they have no write permissions.

The web page seems to use an old email address - I get an
email bounce-back from [email protected] <no such
user>.
Our technicians have spent a lot of time on this
problem....it is probably going to be easier just to discontinue
our use of Director!

  • Multiple users, network, cannot save

We've been chasing some permissions issues around for a week or so. We have several workstations on a server-less network. Each editor has a unique user on each workstation. There are a couple circumstance under which file permissions are preventing us from saving fcp projects.
If I mount another workstation and open a project file from that computer, when I try to save changes, I get a "File Error: Unknown File" message.
If I use Save As to create a copy of the project on the remote computer, that file cannot be opened in FCP after it has been closed. The error message here says "File Error: Wrong Type"
The upshot of these two issues is that I can only open, save, create or copy project files on my local computer and still be able to save over them. Any attempt to save over the remote copy of the file not only fails with an error message (unknown file), but a save or save as to the remote computer corrupts to the project so that it cannot be opened by fcp anymore (wrong type).
There are also issues with multiple users saving the same project on a single workstation, not using the network at all. If user A is the owner of a project file, when user B logs on and tries to edit and save that project, the "File Error: Unknown File" is displayed from 1 to 3 times, as fcp encounters each file resource it is unable to overwrite. In this case, the date modified is updated on the file, and changes appear to be saved. The file is sometimes able to be reopened, and sometimes gets corrupted. I have found no combination of modifying the permissions for the file or the containing folder, applying to enclosed, which enables user B to successfully open and save any file created by user A. The "wrapper" level of the file seems to take the permissions changes, and be modifed at save, but there must be some internal resources in the project file package that are not getting their permissions cleared.
As part of my file management strategy, I always prefer to have one single project file that is my working, "final" project, renaming backup copies as I create them. Not only does this avoid confusion about project versions, particularly in a multi-user environment, but it also helps to keep fcp's internal management of the project's capture and render files nice and neat.
I suspect this is an issue that would require a software revision to fix, to allow the project files internal resources to recognize permissions and access by networked users as they are applied to the wrapper of the project file. However, if anyone out there has any recommendations for workarounds inthe meantime, it would help mmee keep things manageable around here. I the meantime, I will continue making new working copies of the projects each time I need to edit as a different user, or work from a different workstation. Just have to wrap my brain around managing all those copies of the project.

    Need a little more info.
How are the computers connected? How do you connect throught the network to view files from other workstations? Are all the computers identical?
If any computer has any updates that are not on all computers, this could cause a problem.
Also, are there any limitations to the user accounts? If each user does not have access to the files...
When you use a server, all of the computers have access to the raw files, (if the files are on the server...I've learned not to assume too much...) but when you have individual workstations you have to have all computers not only connected by cables (i.e.firewire) but you have to connect them through network settings, MY Network, and password in. Always connect to HD so you can choose where to get info. Of course all of this relies on the fact that you trust all of the users to not screw up the workstations they are on...
Basically, each computer has to be a clone of the others, even though they are working independently.

  • BUG: "Save As" dialog is not showing

sometimes i have the problem (since CC) that the SAVE AS dialog is not showing.
the window does not show when i select SAVE AS.
SAVE works.. but i often want to save a new version without overwriting the old.
i don´t know why it happens but it seems that BIG files (panoramas or many layers) are affected more often.
    happens 3-5 times a week.
never had this problem with PS prior to CC.
    my system:
    intel I7 2600K
    16 GB ram
    GTX 770 (latest drivers)
240 GB SSD (OS windows 7 64 bit)
120 GB SSD (60GB free for scratch files)
2 TB harddisk (1 TB free for scratch files)

Photoshop should not crash even with big files so apparently there is something wrong.
    yeah obviously...
Have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences yet? That sometimes cures malfunctions.
i have resetted the preferences yes.
photoshop should not crash i agree.... but as you can read here in this forum it does.
no software is free of bugs.... and i have worked long enough with computers to burry that expectation.

  • BUG: "Save and compact" increases file size by 1KB each time?

    Flash CS4
I noticed that when I do "save and compact" on a .fla file, it causes the file size to increase by 1KB each time--even when no changes were made.  Can this be fixed?

Yup. It works perfectly in CS3. Now the problem you will have is that you don't have CS3 installed. Even if you will save your files as CS3 format, you cannot (as far as i know) "save and compact" it as CS3, it will prompt that it must be converted from older version CS3 to CS4 and you end up with the same problem. Perhaps there is a setting to force CS4 to save and compact in CS3 version but i doubt it. The only way i know to solve it is save the file as CS3 format (But you will lose some XMP file info metadata, i'm not sure if that is necessary though) then close CS4, and open CS3 then "save and compact" it there. This is definitely a bug where some information might have been duplicated in the file's info or history. If you are lucky an adobe employee might be able to give you a solution to this or just confirm this bug.

  • Networking bug in finder

I use multiple wireless networks all of which have multiple shared computers. However sometimes shared section on the left hand side of the finder window seems to 'freeze' and will display shared computers from a different wireless network and never updates. However if I open a save dialog the shared computers appear correctly in that dialogue, but still remain frozen in standard finder windows. Restarting fixes the issue, but I restart once in a blue moon so it's a little annoying.
    Any ideas?

  • Time Machine Network Bug?

With a Macbook Pro, I am connected to the network using ethernet cable. I manually start a Time Machine backup. After it starts, I disconnect the ethernet cable. Instead of Time Machine continue the backup using the Wireless network, the backup stops. Everything else (Safari for example) continue to work using the Wireless network. If I start the backup again, it starts and completes on the Wireless network.
    Is this a bug?

I have another bug involving Time Machine and Spaces:
When Time Machine is creating the the initial backup, an annoying small window with the progress bar is in the desktop. If you moved to a different space just not to see it in you working space, Time Machine stops. At this point is really really ANNOYING since my backup disk is remote, the initial backup is 299 GB and at this pace it will take the entire week or more to recreate the image... Not to mention that TM is creating this initial image because the sparce image i had GOT CORRUPTED after 6 MONTHS...
Is clear that I'm really ****** off?

  • Local Director network placement

I need to move the Local Director in my network to a new location. Currently, it sits between my Cat 4003 (yes, I know that is really old) and the firewall - ASA. This placement has workd great up until now. I need to have a trunk link between the ASA and the 4003. What I have read states that I should us a multiple switch setup. What I am wondering is if I can use a multiple VLAN set up on the same switch. See attachment pictures for clarification. Would that work? If not, how can I set up LD to still work in my network, but have a trunk link up to the firewall? Thanks!

This usually happens when the backend service is unavailable, and the LD tries to reassign a connection to it (to see if it has recovered).
    * Can you post the output from 'show real'?
    * What version of LD software are you running.

  • Pages cannot save to a network, must "save as"

This started about six months ago--Pages stopped allowing documents to be saved to a network drive after editing.  I either have to work on it locally and constantly update the shared file or "save as" a new document every time I want to save my work.
    What gives?

Mer_Soft insert the reunion of all these requirement in its products.
Apple insert the ones which are needed by 80% of these users. And of course, the 20% left on the road claims that Apple's product isn't professional.
It seems that some users are unable to understand that Apple design its products with a clean and neat analysis.
The products for 80 % of the potential users : iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd, GarageBand, iWork. These products are low cost ones.
The products for users requiring  features useless for the rest of us : Aperture, Final Cut Pro, LightRoom, Logic Studio…. As the target range of customers is smaller, the prices are higher.
As you saw, there is no office dedicated product in this category of products. Apple is perfectly aware of the huge inertia of users of Mer…Soft Office so it doesn't waste bucks trying to compete against this product. I'm sure that market share of Mer…Soft Office will decline. Not because a commercial product will compete against it but because more and more users will understand that the free clones are able to fit their needs so that they will not continue to pay a dime to Redmont company.
I'm happy to say that in France, an increasing number of public services dropped Mer…Soft products and use now apps from the free world. After all, they were paid with my euros !

  • OS 10.6.5 Wireless Networking Bug?

I recently purchased a used Mac Mini Model A1176 (1.83GHz Core 2 Dual, 1GB Ram, Airport Extreme 802.11a/b/g) which came with OS 10.6.4. The first time I fired it up I was able to log into my wireless home network (Verizon DSL, Linksys WRT-54G Wireless Router, WPA Personal security). The signal strength was max. The next day I downloaded and installed OS 10.6.5 and low and behold was not able to log into my network! For starters, my signal strength was now half. Login attempts produced Connection Timeouts, Invalid Password, etc... Keep in mind I have a Macbook on OS 10.6.4 that was login all this time. I brought the Mini to work and was able to login into my office wireless network (Verizon DSL, Verizon Wireless Router, WEP 128 security), thus eliminating an Airport Extreme defect. Back at home I tried changing and eliminating my wireless security to no avail. I found no solutions in the many forums I searched. Finally I formatted and installed OS 10.6.0 and bingo it was working correctly again and has since. Not sure what to make of this. Posting this for a heads up to all my Mac buddies.

I updated Sunday night, installed and rebooted as I walked out of the room to go to bed. Monday afternoon when I got in from work, wireless was down. I have an AT&T Motorola/Netopia 3347 wireless router/modem. I have done the following:
    1) Reset the modem.
    2) Zapped the mini's PRAM.
    3) Reset the SMC.
    4) Deleted and recreated the airport network (System Prefs>Network)
    5) Changed the network name.
    6) Changed the network channel several times (Default was 6, I changed to 1 and then to 4).
    7) Took the modem from B+G to B only. And back again. Nothing worked.
    8) Fixed permissions (Disk Utility).
    9) Changed security protocol from WEP to WPA and finally to none.
    10) Of course I have power cycled the Netopia.
    11) I called AT&T Tech Support... wasn't their fault.
    12) I hooked up my old 2Wire wireless modem that resets itself every 20 minutes (which is why it was in the closet) and it worked with my iPod Touch and with my work laptop (a Dell), but not the Mini running 10.6.5.
    13) I rebooted countless times.
Apple, I may never forgive you for this one. I finally rewired my telephone cording and ran it through my ceiling and down the wall across the room so I could put the modem on the desk and use the Ethernet cord -- which is the only thing that works.
OS X 10.6.5 was highly flawed and this kind of release is totally unacceptable. I want my two days back.
Now: My iPod Touch and the Dell work wirelessly but the Mini is on ethernet duty.

  • Adobe director 12 bug

    hi
    i have adobe director 12
i want to play webcam Through swf flash file
i create flash file to open my webcam and import it to director
in the flash sprite property i checked DTS
    play the movie to test
a popup settingsPanel window display but cannot click on the allaw or deny button

    Mr MaverikMS,
What I usually do is :
        (the stage).rect =  (the desktopRectList)[1]
        (the stage).drawRect = (the desktopRectList)[1]
But this can be done and the WIDTH AND HEIGHT ratio is the same.
The display ratio : 800x600 (square) and 1920x1020 (Wide) are different,
and maybe there are more display ratios.
There are 3 OPTIONS I knew, if you want your presentation CAN DISPLAY AUTO ADJUST
    IN MANY DIFFERENT RATIOS :
    (1) Build from new zero file again in many DIR files - different width and height ratio
    (2) Making an Artificial Inteligent programming Auto Adjust Screen
LOGIC : If the resolution width=...... and heigt =............ then sprite (logosprite).loch= (the stage).width/2....
It will take a lot of thoughts concidering many alternatives....
The hardest : Your design is 1920x1020   but the client sometimes uses 1020x1920 !!!
Charge A BIGGER BILL to your client, explain this is hard one
    (3) First show a small Box displaying 2 alternative screen ratio that LEADS TO DIFFERENT EXE/ projector
Hope my suggestion can help you.

  • Can't save to mapped drive, Save disabled for any network location - Photoshop CS3 on Win 7 x 64

This just started Saturday.  Has worked for a long time.  I did not change anything as far as I can tell.
    Win 7 x 64
Intel I5 with 6gigs of ram
I have a few drives that are mapped and I though this was the issue but when I am using Photoshop any time I click "Save As" and navigate to network drive, mapped or any shared folder on the network the Save button instantly gets greyed out. When I navigate back to any local hard drive the grey button turns back to normal (aka active).
I am at a loss as I can't find any information on the internet.
Strange that it has been working fine until 2 days ago.
The only option now is to save to local HD then manually move files to networked computer.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Can you save to a UNC name?  E.g., \\SERVER\SHARE\Folder\File.ext
If so, this can possibly serve as a workaround.
Has your network admin changed any of the file, folder, or share permissions recently?
FYI, I just tried saving to a mapped network drive with  Photoshop CS5 12.0.2... No problem.

  • Save Error in Photoshop cs6

    Hi there,
I just upgraded from CS5 to CS6 and for the most part love it. I have run into a very serious problem when it comes to saving.
I am on Mac 10.6.8 and have a server that I save all my files too. In CS6 anytime I try to save something to the server's HDD I get the error below,
"Could not save as “avi_horizontal_logo.jpg” because the file name was not valid"
Now, the file name is valid, obviously. I can load the file into cs6 but whenever I try to save over or as a copy I get this error. I still have CS5 installed and have gone back and verified that I can save files to my server via CS5 since coming across the error in CS6. Additionally I have no problems saving to my server via Illustrator or Indesign
This issue is not occurring on one version on only one workstation either. I have both Design Premium (on 2 computers) and Design Standard (on 1) and all three are replicating this issue but the issue is non-existent in CS5.
Any ideas what we can do to rectify this serious problem? Thank you.

It appears to be a clear failure of Adobe software to be able to do what virtually any other application can do, and even previous versions of Photoshop can do:  Write a file to a server.  There's nothing special about image files, other than that they sometimes might be rather large.
Adobe clearly has their own special way of saving files and apparently in implementing it they've triggered a bug in Apple's networking code with regard to actually trying to execute the save.  They've stated that they tried to work around Apple's networking bugs with Photoshop CS6.  Could it be that this work has made a difference for the worse in some situations, such as the one here?  Who can say?
I can only guess, by the presence of this bug and others where users report that they just lose their files, and also that Adobe refuses to implement something simple like employing the recycle bin or trash can, that the actual code inside Photoshop to save files must be a nightmare to work on.  But it seems it really does need work:  Saving files, even via a network, isn't rocket science, however much mystery Adobe wants to wrap around it.  Unix has been facilitating file storage and networking for what, 40 years?
By the way, they have been unable/unwilling to support direct network saves for a number of versions now - pretty much as far back as I can remember.
Station_two is right; chances are you need to work around it by saving your files locally, and manually moving them from/to your server.  That really is safer.
But hey, watch for Photoshop 13.0.1 or your next Apple OS update - you never know!

  • Adobe Save for Web and Devices Error

I had a problem with Save for Web and Devices in Photoshop CS4 - and am posting the solution for anyone else that might encounter this (posted previously for Mac but not Windows). This problem suddenly occurred - and I'm not sure why. I had the most updated Photoshop CS4 version: 11.0.2.
Issue: When I tried to overwrite an existing image using Save for Web and Devices, I received an "Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error": "Could not write the file. A file system error has occurred"
This error prevented any file (originally created using Save for Web &Devices) from being saved again with the same name. I figured out the solution by finding the resolution for Mac Photoshop and adapting it for the PC version. The solution for me was to delete the following files:  "Default Settings.iros" and "Recently Used Optimizations.irs" (the only two files present) in the following directory:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[user profile name]\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US\Save for Web Settings\
Note that there were other sub-directories of the "Save for Web Settings" folder - I didn't touch any of those. The problem is now resolved and Photoshop seems to function normally.

Honestly, I haven't had problems with reading/writing files to/from network drives, but I have read on this forum that there are times when it causes problems for people.
And yes, if you used the command line NET USE (or the Explorer Map Network Drive) function to create the drive, it is actually using Windows Networking behind the scenes.
