Director programs on memory sticks/discs?

Interested in hearing any good or bad experiences with
running Director apps from USB drives /memory sticks? Any specific
issues relating to autostart procedures, performance, etc.

As far as the computer is concerned, its just another drive.
You need to
be concerned about the speed of the stick. They're not all
the same.

  • Sony TG3 / ADVHC / Memory stick / Disc Image

    Hi there!
I have a Sony TG3 (love it!) and iMovie 08 happily converts the ADVHC files. Of course once converted the files are HUGE so I am going to start deleting the originals after I've burned the movie to DVD. The thing is I want to keep the original Memory Disc files in their original format and after reading that I could simply save the Memory Stick as a Disk Image I tried this and it worked a treat!
Here's the problem; the mounted Disc Image is seen by iMovie and allows me to import just as if it were the original Memory Stick (great!) but the Disk Image is simply called 'Untitled' and I am unable to rename it. What I would like to be able to do is to have all my Memory Sticks backed up as Disc Images on a hard drive but I will of course need to be able to identify them. How do I rename the Disk Image, or is this something that I need to do when I am creating the Disk Image? If so, how do I do this?
I also realise that this entire situation could be simplified by using 4GB Memory Sticks and backing the Disc Image up to individual DVDs but I have a couple of 8GB and 16GB Memory Sticks too, and besides I think it would be neater to have everything on one drive.
Any help appreciated, and many thanks!

After much fiddling I have worked out that I was trying to save the mounted Disc Image instead of the .dmg file (silly mistake!). Turns out that I can bung all the .dmg files on a seperate drive and rename them anything I want as it's just the mounted image that calls itself 'Untitled' by default. I can live with that though.
Would you advise me to use 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo cards in my TG3 instead of 8GB or 16GB? From a back up point of view I am guessing that the 4GB is easier since it could be backed up to DVD but I welcome any thoughts from other users.
    Many thanks!

  • How do you import photos from a disc on to a memory stick

how do you import photos from a cd disc on to a memory stick using an IMac 27 inch

Insert the CD into the CD/DVD drive and the memory stick into a USB port. Open a Finder window and browse to the CD disk and select the images you want to copy. You can select individual images, out of order by holding down the Command key while clicking on them or a Run of images by holding down the Shift key and select the first then the last image you want to copy over.
Once selected press Command + c keys to Copy. Browse (Select) the memory stick in the finder window and press Command + v keys to paste.

  • Has anyone got a good program / app that will backup my USB memory stick to my Mac?

As above , would appreciate any suggestions, as currently have a lot of work on my memory stick which is so important and thought I had lost it today!! If every time I plug my flash drive in, it would back up onto my Mac that would be great
    Thanks
    Amfox1

Try Copy From the stick and Paste To the Mac hard drive.
Or use Disk Utility to create a image of the info on that stick saving it to the internal hard drive of the Mac.

  • Can I save to memory sticks for read and write access?

I use M.S. Office for Mac to do my admin. I would be very grateful if anyone can help with my queries.
I want to save work to media that allows me read and write access. Saving to discs (of any type) does not allow any editing.
    1. If I save to a memory stick will I be able to save and update my work when I want to?
    Also;
    2. Would a memory stick have to be formatted with to be suitable for Mac?
3.If the memory stick can be used for the purpose, I want to encrypt it; how would I do this please?
    4. Would encrypting place a limit on the capacity of the memory stick that can be used, e.g.  I have a choice, including 8Gb and 16Gb.
    5. I have heard that passwords can be created by Mac; what is the method for doing this please?
    Many thanks for in advance.

There is terminology here I am unfamiliar with. I feel I have embarked upon a complex path.
I do not know what HFS+ is.
HFS+ is the Mac OS X file system.  Hierarchical File System Plus (Plus as it used to be HFS, but then they improved it and said +)
By default a USB flash drive generally comes formatted with FAT (from the Microsoft MS-DOS days, but is a universal format - it might come with FAT32 or exFAT as well - still from Microsoft).  Mac OS X can read/write these, HOWEVER, its FileVault whole disk encryption is only designed to work with HFS+, which is why I mentioned it.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility can be used to reformat a disk, USB Flash drive, etc...  NOTE:  reformatting does erase everything on a disk, so keep that in mind.
What is the difference between File Vault and .dmg in disk utilities?
FileVault is whole disk encryption.  Everything on the disk is encrypted. and you need to enter the password just to mount the device.
A .dmg file is a regular file that happens to contain a file system inside of it.  When you double click on the .dmg file, Mac OS X will mount the file system inside as if it was a disk.  If the .dmg file is encrypted, then you will be prompted for the password before Mac OS X will mount it.  A .dmg is just a container for a file system.  Inside that contain is a full file system with files and directories just like any other file system.
You can create read only .dmg files, you can create read/write, you can create sparse (you declare the maximum side, but the initial size of the .dmg is small and will grow to the maximum size as you add things to the .dmg, you can create encrypted .dmg.
Since a .dmg is just a file with no special attributes on the outside, it can be copied around.  You can copy it over the network, you can store it in the cloud, you can put it on a USB Flash drive, you can put it on an external disk, etc...
If the device you put it can be mounted by Mac OS X, then you can double-click on the .dmg and it will mount the file system inside the .dmg and you will be able to access the files in the .dmg
This even includes USB Flash drives that use the FAT format family.  But you existing external disks can be used for that as well.
If I used an external hard drive for the purpose I have in mind, would the  disk .dmg utility allow me to access folders and files for editing or should I approach the task in a different way?  I would still wish to encrypt.
As I said above, the .dmg is a full file system where you can store files and folders inside a .dmg container file.  And you can encrypt the .dmg so it is secure.

  • 2 GB memory stick run with 1 GB memory stick?

I'm looking into the possibility of maxing out the memory on my 2nd gen Macbook from 2 gb to 3gb, and have one question left.
Would the fact that I'd have a 2gb Crucial memory stick running next to a 1 gb Apple memory stick throw off the optimization of the system so much that it would just be better to stick with the two apple issued 2gb memory sticks?

    First Magus wrote:
It will not hurt anything as long as they are the same speed. I did it when I first got my MacBook. I installed a Crucial stick next to an apple supplied stick and it worked like charm. I wanted to add I used it for over a year like this with no noticeable problems while using programs such as Photoshop CS3.
You know - after I read the Santa Rosa chipset datasheet, I'm starting to wonder even about this. Intel claims that the GMA965 is capable of controlling either "533 or 667 MHz" memories - meaning PC2-4200 or PC2-5300. A cursory reading said that a full dual channel setup is achieved by simply matching the sizes, and that if the speeds were not the same, it would revert to the lower speed on both channels. However - I haven't heard of anyone trying out a PC2-4200 module. My curiosity is now piqued, and maybe I can try that tonight with a Samsung PC2-4200 module I have lying around.
Of course Apple could configure it such that only PC2-5300 is acceptable, but I didn't go so far into the datasheet to see what was in the configuration registers.
Of course we've recently had the entertainment of someone claiming dire consequences from mixing and matching memory brands, but I think it's safe to say that shouldn't be an issue.

  • How can I use my Geil DDR500 ultra platinum Memory stick at 500Mhz

Ok this is probally going to be simple for most people to fix, the problem is i can't seem to set up the bios to accept my DDR500 memory sticks. Everything I've tried results in either:
    > no display on boot (monitor just shuts off)
    > a message saying "times to tight bla bla"
    > shuts down of the computer occurs straight away after POST and will reboot with the too tight error
I'am really stuck and do not know if it is the way im setting the bios or that the mobo can't take the Geil sticks. I did post some threads a while back about them but know one seem to have the same ones as me.
This the setup i've been trying :
Mat setting = slow (cos it won't like another setting in conjuction with things below)
    CPU Ratio = locked
    DRAM Frequency= 500
    CPU Clock= 250
    Vcore=1.6v
    DDR voltage=1.8v
    agp voltage =1.5v
    memory= 2.5-4-4-7-8
but if i use this i get all the problems above, i can only seem to adjust only one thing of what i list in the setup i was trying, to have a stable system.
E.g if i change the memory timings i can't change anything else.

  • How can I transfer a podcast to memory stick?

I have several Podcasts in iTunes that I would like to keep ( I need to move them I am very short of memory) They are too 'big' to burn to disc, so I would like to put them onto a memory stick/flash drive. I have tried drag and drop, but that does not work!
    Any ideas?

I use an older iTunes version and I can move podcasts about as files.  It may be you are having problems copying to the memory stick.  I find I cannot drag from iTunes to a sub-folder on a FAT formatted drive, I have to copy it to the top level of the drive, then move it to a sub-folder, or do it all in Finder.

  • Can't add more than one memory stick

    Hi guys,
I could really use some help, this is driving me insane for weeks and I can't find any solution among teh interweb or this forum.
My problem: I've a very instable system : different bsod on win7 start up, infinite reboot, random black screen, freeze...even the bios freeze once.
My 2cts: Memory trouble. By using various ineffective methods (listed below), the only repetitive pattern I've found is that -> the more memory stick I use, the more instable the system became.
     - With 1 stick I get sometime a stable system (3 days without trouble) but it goes back to infinite loop after a crash
     - With 2 sticks I get a stable windows but freeze after 5-10min of gaming, and infinite loop
     - With 3 sticks I can't get pass windows start up, and infinite loop most of the time
My current solution: I manage to get these results with by downgrading the memory (otherwise I get bsod on start up or infinite reboot every time even with one stick).
     - EIST and Intel Turbo Boost turn off
     - Ram frequency set to 1066Hz (instead of 1333) -> Funny this parameter seems not to hold, it goes back to 1333
     - Unlink ram configuration: CRate at 2 and 9-9-9-27 (instead of 9-9-9-24) -> not sure because the value on center column is still at 24
     - Vram set between 1.5v and 1.65v (instead of 1.46 in auto)
    Other unsuccessful stuff I've tried:
     - each tests are made with barebone configuration (one HDD, no DVD, etc...)
     - multiple CMOS clearing (all night with jumper)
     - several clean win7 install
     - several tests with each of my 4 ram sticks alone (on DIMM 1)
     - all drivers update
     - return the motherboard to get a new one (the actual is 3 months old)
     - buying 2 more ram sticks
     - BIOS flash with 1.H, 1.G and even the brand new one 1.I !
    My configuration :
    i5 2500K @3.3Gb
    P67A-GD55 (b3)
    GIGABYTE GTX 560 ti
    2x2Gb Crucial DDR3 1333MHz (CT25664BA1339.M8FR)
    2x2Gb GSkill DDR3 1333MHz (F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT)
    SSD HD for system
    Windows 7 64bits PRO sp1
    Corsair TX650
No fancy keyboard like GR11 (microsoft wireless 10.A)
    Logitech G500 usb mouse
    Any ideas ?? Thanks !

Sorry! Not going to work, no way, no how!
Ditch the G.Skill & use just the Crucial. RAM defaults the way it does because of the SPD profiles programmed on the chips. Use either 'Link' or Auto. Set Dram V. to 1.514-1.521v., manually set timings to CR 1, 9 9 9 24.

  • How can I install Windows 7 with Boot Camp from a Usb memory stick?

What exactly do I need to do to the memory stick?

Depends on the game. Most programs have no problem installing on an external drive.
Of course depending on the game, performance may or may not be an issue. A crossword puzzle game will perform better than a real time fast action game running from an external drive.
2.5, 3.5, 5400rpm, 7200rpm, SSD drives come as internal or external drives. The external frives have an enclosure to hold the drives. Otherwise they are the same. You can buy empty enclosures into which you would put your drive, if you have an internal drive you want to use as an external drive.

  • Installing Photoshop Elements 12 from memory stick

I purchased a copy of Photoshop Elements some time ago and it was running on my last computer with no problem. I now have bought a new iMac running OSX 10.9.5. and as I did not have a backup copy I transferred Elements to a memory stick and tried to install this on my new computer. I get the message after putting in my serial number that it thinks this is not a genuine Adobe product and installation aborts. What can I do?

is the installation file on the memory stick?
if not, download and install using it,

  • How do I move files to memory stick using Vista

Can anyone throw any light on my new problem .
I am using Windows Vista Home on my Toshiba Satellite 350 and I am trying to save a file to memory stick.
I locate the correct file and click on ' send to removable disc '
I then get an 'Item not found ''box which contains the message ,
''Could not find this item This item is no longer located in C:\Users\Desktop.
I ( Or wherever am looking) Verify the items location and try again''
I have checked the location and I have the correct one .
I have tried this many times with different types of files/locations and I get a similar message every time I try to move the file to anywhere , not just the memory stick
I have tried dragging the files in to the box and get the same message ,copying and pasting does not work I still get the same message ?
Whatever am I doing wrong ?

    Thank you for the reply
Yes, I do know how to copy and paste but as you see from my question I get an 'Item not found ''box popoping up which contains the message
''Could not find this item This item is no longer located in C:\Users\Desktop. I ( Or wherever am looking) Verify the items location and try again''
BUT the files are there .
I have tried this many times with different types of files/locations and I get a similar message every time I try to move the file

  • Using Memory Sticks for iTunes

I am transferring iTunes from my old computer onto my new laptop, instead of using up the harddrive, can I transfer iTunes onto a Memory Stick instead of onto the laptop ?

b Now he has bought a brand new Sony VA10 laptop with 512mb and put his iTunes and ipod onto it but he wont let me
He won’t “let” you? Who paid for the computer??
b put my iTunes onto it because he says it will be too much on his memory.
iTunes is a program. You do not need to load it more than one time onto the computer.
The actual song files are what take up space.
b Now we want to sell our old computer and too save him moaning I wanted to know if I could transfer my iTunes onto a large Memory stick and just plug it into the laptop when I want to download onto my ipod?
Might be possible but not very easily accomplished.

  • IbookG3 wont recognize memory stick or burn disks after adding more memory

I recently added more memory to my old ibook. Now when I put my memory stick in either USB ports nothing comes up on the desktop. I also can't get anything to burn onto disc. Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried removing the RAM to see if those capabilities return to the iBook?
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?

  • If I replace memory sticks, will this affect ongoing FCPX projects?

Mid-year 2010 iMac with only 4GB memory (2x2). Computer running Extremely slow while editing, surfing web, everything! Nothing on the hardrive - already dumped everything onto external HD's months ago - but it just keeps getting slower. Today - patience ran out.
    Just purchased 16GB memory (4x4).
Main concern - if I remove the 2x2GB memory sticks/cards, could this affect the current FCPX projects I am working on?
This may be a dumb question to experts, but my anxiety of losing these projects drives me to ask this important question before leaping.
I am grateful for any help and/or advice given!
Also - any other tips about helping your Mac run faster is always appreciated.
    Thanks!

I feel sure that hwoever sold you your ram, first reasearched this. Look under the apple menu/about this mac to see how much Ram & its speed on your mac.
Have a look at this link.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
Try editing only after you start up your Mac. If you gotta go online, check your e-mail, play with FaceBook, etc. - do that then reboot to edit.
I also suggest deleting any startup items that you don't NEED to start up at LOGIN:
    apple menu/system preferences/users & groups/log in items.
I downloaded a little app called System Pal from the App Store so I can see in real time what is using Ram & the CPU. Works for me.
So much of Final Cut Pro X takes advantage of the I7 chip & Vram. Unless you are having OS or software issues, your Mac is doing the best it can. Generally, I try to stay with App versions that are designed with my hardware.
I suggest using FCP X tutorials to learn the program really well. If you become a great editor, you will be able to afford a new machine in no tiime.
    Goood Luck
