Directory for my iWeb site

How do I create a directory for my iWeb site?

You will have to do it manually, a first page using whatever template seems to fit best and then create a link and description of each item you want in the directory. Something like this maybe? It could have links to the pages or not.

  • Can anybody recommend a UK based host for an iWeb site?

I need to know where to host my iweb site with the least technical difficulty.I have seen on ichat HomeExcellence which sounds ok buy it is US based.

24/7 tech support is a lot more important than location. I've been using Host Excellence for 7 years now and haven't found any reason to change.
Their associated service - IXWebhosting - offers really good value for those who only have one site but need the option fo another dedicated IP address. Their tech support has been really helpful to those to whom I have recommended this service as you will see here...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Website-Hosting.html
Most tech support people don't seem to understand how iWeb creates sites and can be rather unhelpful.
One of the main advantages of the above mentioned services is the fact that they allow you to create a root folder with the same name as your site in iWeb. This goes a long way to helping you understand the concept of the root folder and the file/folder structure on the server.

  • Which web hosting company for my iWeb site?

    Hi everyone.
I was going to let my iWeb site just die with MobileMe, but decided to go ahead and get hosting for it to keep it online.  I'm trying find advice on which company to choose. After looking online I saw this one company called Little Oak is a mac web hosting company, and they are offering a 25% discount right now to host websites (http://www.thewhir.com/web-hosting-news/web-hosting-sales-and-promos-roundup-jun e-29-2012
Can anyone vouch for their reputation?  Or can you offer up any other companies that I should consider?
    Thank you.
    Anne.

I use Little Oak for my site, and I can genuinely recommended.  They are great.  And in regards to pricing, it is relative.  You can find really budget and cheap hosting, you can even find free hosting.  But you usually get what you pay for.  I would stay away from free hosting if you want decent service.  I really like and value the service I get from LO.  And that 25% coupon looks like a good reason to try them. I've called or IM with them at all hours of the day, and always get great service.
Its true that most web hosting companies offer similar prices and packages, what you really want to see if a companies reputation for service, because when things go wrong, you want to be sure you are going to be taken care of.
I'm sure whoever you go with, they will be able to help you move your site over.  Here is a help sheet from Apple to get you started: (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4686).

  • Buy & Sell Tools for new iWeb site

    Hello,
I've had a Hompage website business for sometime, but with iWeb and the fact that somehow my business can now be Googled has made me take a hard look at what I created and how I am going to shape it into a sucessful small business.
My biggest concern is that I do not have any real buy & sell tools to go with my business. I ran across a mention in this forum about RegNow, but I honestly cannot figure out what they actually do. I want some legitimate enterprise to provide the tools I need so my credit card customers can buy from me. I would also like for my customers to have the ability of tracking their order as well.
Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Phillip

You could just set-up a Paypal on your site and that would be easy and effective. Look here to find out how to get a Paypal button on your site:

If you shipped through UPS or Fed-Ex you could e-mail your customers a tracking number so they can track their order.

  • Using iMovie to create movies for an iWeb site

    Hi, all:
Relative Mac noob; please be kind. I think I'm going to answer my own question, anyway, but I thought I'd ask... and I'll cross-post in the iWeb section, too.
I am planning to add some movies to my site. I've done the preliminary layout work, and just need to edit and upload the video.
Up to now, I have always used, and am comfortable with, iMovie HD 6. I've never used iMovie '08, even though I installed the iLife '08 upgrade two months ago.
Which version of iMovie - '08 or HD 6 - is better suited to the task of editing digital video that will be added to an iWeb site? One source file is a QuickTime movie I've already got; the rest of the video I'll be shooting in the coming week or so.
I think that the older version of iMovie is going to suit me better, 1) b/c I already know it and 2) it has more powerful editing capabilities, no?
    Thanks,
    Bill from CT

As always, use the editor that has the features needed for the project.

  • Browser address for my iWeb site...

I would like my browser address to show my official company name i.e. www.mycompany.com instead of what I am seeing which is http://web.me.com/myname/mycompanyname/Home.html. This seems to be making it hard to find my iWeb site on a google search.

Google doesn't care about your address. It happily indexes your pages as soon as it finds you.
To use a domain name at MobileMe :
You publish to MobileMe. With or without a domainname.
To use your domainname, follow the instructions in your MobileMe account where you setup Personal Domain:
    https://secure.me.com/account/
Where you'll find a link to [iWeb: Using your own domain name|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1107]
Or read it in the [MobileMe help|http://help.apple.com/mac/1/help> : Account > Setting up a Personal Domain
You can have only one domainame with Personal Domain at MobileMe. To use the other one you have to enable URL forwarding where you host your domainname.
There's also a forum dedicated to this subject : [MobileMe iWeb and Personal Domain|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1163]

  • Comments - for an iWeb site not running on a mac

So is there some place where I can see exactly what the code for the comments are trying to do? I really want to use this functionality on my personal site (which is running on a linux box).
I've seen the haloscan stuff, but would rather be updating a database I already have running.

Where can I see the code that iWeb uses for
    this?
To see how iWeb does comments with .Mac you would need to publish a site to .Mac and do some exploring. I don't know whether what you would find would be relevant to trying to duplicate this functionality with your own linux server or not.

  • How do I set up a root directory for a web site

So this is probably a naive newbie question.
I have been creating websites driven by php/mysql on my mac for years using the previous the web preference pane to run Apache and since that went away using XAMPP to provide Apache/php/mysql functionality on localhost.
I decided to download OSX server and try to use that.  Figured might as well go native MAC.
    I am baffled.
The manual says to set up a web site in Server by working through the Websites Services interface. I did that and pointed the setup at the directory where I have all of my web site files.  I now have no idea how to access that page from my local machine.
    I have tried:
    http://localhost/myURL
http://localhost/~username/Sites/[root file directory]  -- where the files are stored
I also tried some typical localhost ip address
    None access my site.
How do I access my site over my local netework?
I feel like just dumping server.app and stting things up through the terminal.
    Thanks,

How familiar are you with the bash command line and with Apache, and how much do you want to learn about Apache and related topics?  (If you're not already, then I'd encourage learning about this material, as this knowledge is very useful for maintaining and updating sites, and knowledge of correctly securing files and directories is critical to building and maintaining secure web sites — all of managing and running and updating a web server builds on these foundations.  There are various good books and web sites on Apache, and the Apache web site has various materials available, if you don't already have something.)
The localhost host name and the 127.0.0.1 IPv4 address are both synonyms for the "me" host.  It's the name and the address that always gets you to the current host.
With http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1 specification, what you enter at the URL address bar is relative to the root directory specified for the default web server, and will default to the index.html or index.php page or whatever the default web site is configured to use.  With OS X Server, this root directory is configured via Server.app.  To use Server.app, launch it, connect to the server, select Websites from the left navigation, and you (by default) will see a default site and a secure site.  Select the default site.  Select the edit button below the site to edit (and to view) the configuration.
With the details of the default site visible, you will see the path to the default web directory.  This path to the default web directory is where the files for the default web sever location reside.
The default path to the default web site is /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default
If you place foo.html in that directory (or whatever the defailt web site is using), you can view it via your web browser and the URLs:
    http://127.0.0.1/foo.html
    http://localhost/foo.html
To get to the default web site using the GUI, launch Finder and select Go To Folder, and enter that string into the box.  You will now get a GUI view of that folder.  (I'd strongly recommend using the command line here, and not the GUI.  To get to the directory from the command line and then list the files present, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities folder and issue the following commands:
    cd /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default
    ls
If you want to test something in the browser, you can use the file:///path-to-file-to-test mechanism.  Most web browsers will allow you to render local files directly using file and three slashes.
You will need to ensure the executable files (scripts) are marked as executable to OS X, using a Terminal.app command such as the following:
    chmod o+x path-to-file
Enabling ~/user per-user sites involves directly editing the configuration file, as Apple has disabled that by default.
There's an Apache tutorial with an overview of what's involved with enabling per-user directories here, and there's what's been listed in my earlier replies and links.  With OS X Server Mavericks, the default configuration file for Apache is located in the Library folder, and can be viewed with the following Terminal.app command:
    cat /library/server/web/config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf
This file is the OS X Server equivalent of the oft-cited httpd.conf file you'll see listed in various documentation.
If you want to enable the per-user directories or tweak other Apache settings, then shut down Apache from Server.app or from the command line, and then edit the configuration file with nano or some other command-line editor using a command similar to this:
    sudo nano /library/server/web/config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf
you'll end up finding and uncommenting (removing the #) from the following two lines:
    #LoadModule apple_userdir_module ${SERVER_INSTALL_PATH_PREFIX}/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_userdir_apple.so
    #Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-userdir.conf
If you have specific questions about this, then I and others here can answer those.  If you don't understand something, then asking a question about that can help you learn, and can help me understand what it is that I'm posting in my replies here that's confusing you.  There are also various resources available for learning Apache, and I'd encourage spending a little time with those if you've not already done so or feeling at all unsure about how that tool works; I end up re-re-reviewing the Apache docs fairly regularly.

  • Smart FTP App for posting iWeb sites?

I currently us Godaddy as my WPP. But as my iWeb website grows bigger with blogs & pics, etc. the "publish to folder" option with iWeb becomes more and more cumbersome. Transmit.app has a nice "sync" function that checks the dates of files, and only updates what needs updating. But each time I make changes in iWeb, and then publish to a folder, all of the files' dates are updated for the whole website, so Transmit.app just sees that the whole website is newer & needs posted, and is unable to determine which files were changed based on date alone.
I can do the updating manually--only uploading the pages I know that I changed, but again, it becomes very cumbersome, not only because of iWeb's naming schemes, but also because iWeb seems to put some image files in non-intuitive folders/places, and I am having trouble making sure all of the changes get uploaded that are needed.
Does any one know of an FTP program that can track actual changed files apart from the dates, and update only what has changed?

    Curtises4africa wrote:
Why can't a polished program like Transit.app do this?
In September 2007, the guys at Transmit said this:
"Transmit is in the same boat as Fetch. There is currently no workaround for this, as +Transmit 3+ was only designed to consider dates when synchronizing, not size. +Transmit 4+ will be able to compare sizes."

+"Easy iWeb Publisher"+ significantly cuts down the time it takes to upload changed or updated sites by comparing the files on your computer with those on the web server. Click on the image:
    RBrowser also has Folder Syncronization:
"RBrowser's sync engine will automatically find your changes and publish your new and changed files only to the remote server."
...But perhaps you would have to buy the licensed version to get that feature:
"Absolutely unrestricted operations in all protocols (Local, FTP/SSL/TLS, SFTP-SSH), including Folder Sync."
...you could try the free version first and see if it has that feature.
And here's a comprehensive list of Mac file transfer software:

  • PC designer for an iWeb site

if I have a designer who does work from a PC, will I be able to access it in iWeb, make changes, update, etc., or do I lose all control?

Welcome to the Support Communities. No, you won't be able to access the site from iWeb as iWeb doesn't have an import capability. An alternative would be to use Weebly to build the site. Weebly is web-based so can be used from a PC or Mac and has a  "collaborative" mode:

  • Uploading iweb site to path within a directory

I need to upload my website to a certain path within a larger directory. My iweb site is not the main site. The main site though uses php and well iweb doesn't. Is it still possible to upload my iweb site to a path in this directory and it function correctly? If so, how would I go about doing this?

Okay, so firstly, you CAN't have an iWeb account - iWeb is an application that is on your Mac and you can use it whatever if it is there - there is no account that is needed.
You will not now be able to get a MobileMe account if you don't already have one, as they are not taking any more subscriptions as it will not be here from June next year, iCloud having replaced it.
You say that you have a "url" or do you mean domain name from GoDaddy?  If you do, then to be able to upload a website you also need to purchase a hosting account from them.
Not having a hosting account would be one very good reason why you would be getting the error messages' cannot connect to server' - this is because you have no server/host to connect to because you don't have a hosting account.
Go to GoDaddy and purcahse a hosting account from them and you will then be able to upload your site.

  • Iweb site on search engines

I have been trying my very best to make my website (http://web.mac.com/bjcarreon) available on search engines because I think it's a great site and people can learn from my experiences but I have been only 1/4 successful because when you try to search for me in google, you can only search what's on the welcome page and not the sub pages. how do i make all the pages in my site, searchable?
is there an easy way to have my iweb made website searchable on line? please help.

mate - your in the wrong forum. you have the latest iweb version, and this is the one previous to it. in any case, you might want to check out my tutorial for making iweb sites be on google:
    http://guimkie.com/projects/iweb/get-on-google-with-iweb/
as a way to make your site be more keyword attractive - make sure that none of your text is as images. if you use simply textboxes, the content will be moved into the html code and can then be picked up by google. text in images cannot be picked up by google.
for those having iweb 06, i have this article:
    http://guimkie.com/projects/iweb/get-on-google-with-iweb-1x
i have some ads on my site, meaning it might generate revenue if you visit it. this is apple policy. i have to state it in order to be allowed to post this link here.

  • IWeb sites load extremely slow from various computers

I am sure this must be the case for everyone, but if I click on an iWeb link vs. a homepage link the difference in loading times in amazing. My old homepages load in seconds, iWeb in minutes.
This is the case if I go to the iWeb page on my mac, my pC at home, a PC at work, whatever.
    Have others noticed this?

    Hi NH Sullivan,
I too have also noticed less than satisfactory loading times, even for simple iWeb sites. (Again, regardless of platform, browser etc.) It seems to take a particularly long time to load the navigation sections and photo galleries.
I have not looked into a solution to this, but I have looked at the source code for iWeb generated sites and to me (Although I'm not an expert) there is a lot of unnecessary code.
