Directory Server 5.2patch4 index question

Hello,
Hopefully just a really simple question about indexes. After creating indexes from the console, do you have to restart the ldap server for it to actually start using the indexes. The reason I ask, is that we have setup a box with ldapclient to authenticate user against an ldap server. We ran the idsconfig and such and we can authenticate, but it is really slow. We have some share directories setup where there are say 5-20 members in groups and when we do an ls -la on the directory it takes about 5 seconds for each directory listing to show up and the ldap server cpu utilization jumps. We also see an unidex search error in the ldap error log file. Also when I do an ldaplist group it is very slow. We have about 25000 groups.
Any help would be greatly apprecidated.
Thanks,
Gary

When you have created new indexes with the Console (or via CLI), you MUST build / rebuild indexes. It is not because you've configured an index that the data in the Directory has been indexed properly.
The separation between configuring an index and building it allows you to do the later when it has little impact to client application.
No server restart is needed.
The Directory Server Administration Manual, Managing Indexes chapter covers this topic.

Ludovic.

  • Flash or imaging solaris with directory server

    Hi,
I don;t know weather it is "doable" or not and im not sure weather this question belong to directory server or solaris OS question.
This is about OS imaging, but with directory server. Reason, i have to build 10 servers with directory server in it.
Did anybody install directory server on a solaris machine and image that server?
can i use the same image to create rest of the servers?
    Appriciate any thoughts / suggestions
    -S-

Don't ask me exactly how but flash/flar/imaging is exactly that a complete system image. So you could do this but you will end up with 10 identical - i.e. hostname, IP , nodename - servers.
If it's worth the effort I'd suggest putting the JES components that you need, with SILENT install templates etc, into a jumpstart configuration. Then jumpstart/install each server and run the silent installs with appropriate hostname configurations, I've seen this entirely automated but it takes some work
If this is the only time you're EVER going to do this I'd say you're on the verge of the time worth it versus not stage, if you see the need to do this again in future I'd say it is worth the time investment.
You may consider just using jumpstart with appropriate installation bits to get each server OS going and manually install the Directory.

  • Question re how iPlanet Directory Server applies the Look Through Limit.

I have a question on how iPlanet Directory Server applies the lookthrough limit...
I am running an LDAP search on a 4.13 directory. The search filter is:
         "(&(rtrdaMaturityDate>=20020128)(rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130))"
rtrdaMaturityDate is an int, and indexed with pres,eq,sub
There are 244680 entries where rtrdamaturityDate>=20020128
    383005 entries where rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130
484 entries which satisfy both conditions
When the query is run as Directory Manager it just hangs (presumably it would complete eventually).
When run as another user it gives a size limit error. The size limit and lookthrough limit on the directory are both 5000 . As the matching number of entries doesn't exceed the size limit, I think perhaps it is the lookthrough limit causing the problem...
It looks as if it treats each part of the filter separately, building an candidate list for each, giving an error if both reach the look through limit. i.e. it does not realise that both parts of the filter could be treated together.
    Is this correct ?
This theory is born out by the fact that if I change the value so the filter would logically return only the highest few values, the search works (i.e. as if the <= filter condition hit LTL, but the >= did not).
Also, if I add another condition to give "(&(rtrdaIssuerBgNid=4403)(rtrdamaturityDate>=20020128)(rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130))" then the search eventually correctly returns a single entry. (IssuerBgNid=4403 on its own gives 1004 entries).
Can I therefore assume that a seach will only work if at least one condition in the filter gives a candidate list with less entries than the look through limit?
Any advice on how to implement a range search like this would also be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

The lookthrough limit is reached when the resulting candidate list contains more entries than the limit...
Lookthrough limit has been implemented specifically to for Range filters (and OR filters) to avoid consuming too many resources.
For your particular problem, you can increase the lookthrough limit... but it will affect all users and searches.
Note that iPlanet Directory Server 5.x does provide a per User LookThrough Limit (and other limits as well), therefore you could just increase the lookthrough limit for the specific users performing these searches.

  • Directory Server 5.1 and CMS 4.2 SP2

There's a similar question on 16 January that didn't get answered.
I realise I can configure CMS to publish certificates to an "external" DS 5.1 LDAP directory. However, I'd like to know whether there is a realistic method to make CMS use DS 5.1 for it's internal database (port 38900). I don't want to build a complex mixed-version environment unless there will be no alternative for (say) the next 6-9 months.
I have a production user directory that is being upgraded from DS 4.12 to 5.1. Our CMS system is also in production, and was upgraded to 4.2 SP2 about 6 months ago.
Does anyone have any experiences in this area that can help me decide on an optimal way forward?

I recommened that you read the Release Notes of DS5.2, there are some notes on Replication between 5.1 and 5.2.
    ===
In Directory Server 5.2, the schema file 11rfc2307.ldif has been altered to conform to rfc2307. If replication is enabled between 5.2 servers and 5.1 servers, the rfc2307 schema MUST be corrected on the 5.1 servers, or replication will not work correctly.
    Workaround
To ensure correct replication between Directory Server 5.2 and Directory Server 5.1, perform the following tasks:
    * For zip installations, remove the 10rfc2307.ldif file from the 5.1 schema directory and copy the 5.2 11rfc2307.ldif file to the 5.1 schema directory. (5.1 Directory Server Solaris packages already include this change.)
    * Copy the following files from the 5.2 schema directory into the 5.1 schema directory, overwriting the 5.1 copies of these files:
    11rfc2307.ldif, 50ns-msg.ldif, 30ns-common.ldif, 50ns-directory.ldif, 50ns-mail.ldif, 50ns-mlm.ldif, 50ns-admin.ldif, 50ns-certificate.ldif, 50ns-netshare.ldif, 50ns-legacy.ldif, and 20subscriber.ldif.
    * Restart the Directory Server 5.1 server.
    * In the Directory Server 5.2 server, set the nsslapd-schema-repl-useronly attribute under cn=config to on.
    * Configure replication on both servers.
    * Initialize the replicas.
    ===
Also search for "migrate" or "repl" or "5.1" in Release Notes and read the relevant information.

  • Directory Server SMF tripping over itself (crosspost)

I've posted this question in the SMF related forum too, so if replies could go there, that would be handy: [http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10940406]
We have a working instance of DSEE6.3.1 under Solaris 10 managed via SMF (using the manifest generated by dsadm/dscfg -- I forget which).
    # svcs -a | grep ldap-user
online         10:47:08 svc:/application/sun/ds:ds--data-ldap-user-instanceAfter a forced shutdown, DSEE starts up and does a self-recovery (as it should). When that's complete, the slapd process is running and the startup script exits with status 221 (ie. Not 0) -- however slapd is running.
SMF notices that it's !0 and tries to restart DSEE... by issuing another start. This second start then exits almost immediately saying "slapd already running" but this time exits with 0 -- are we ok? No... cos SMF then notices that all the processes it just started have gone away so it calls "stop" followed by another "start".
This is where it gets a bit hazy as it looks like DSEE never shut down cleanly again so the whole process repeats itself ad infinitum (although I suspect that's a separate issue). :-(
I guess what I'm asking is -- is there a way to stop SMF from doing that: perhaps treat exit=221 as non-fatal and perform a service check?

Well, one way around it is to write your own start script and manage the exit codes yourself.
I have some doubts about the autorestart configuration of DS, especially in a case like this where the server seems to be crashing. Realistically, you can end up worse off if your server has crashed by automatically restarting it. Your data may be corrupt, and the process may eventually stay up (especially if you work around the current issue), but the DS is not really healthy and it does need an administrator to investigate what's wrong with it. It may also return inconsistent or simply bad data to clients. All in all, I would prefer an instance in such a state to stay down and trigger alarms, assuming it has failover peers that can take on its workload.

  • Directory Server 5.2 installation problem on win2000 server,sp4

    Hi,
I attempt to install Directory Server 5.2 on windows 2000 server(Simple Chinese) sp4, when the installation comes to "configuring" it stops.
    And have this error:
java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 16
    at java.lang.String.substring(String.java:1477)
    at com.sun.admserv.install.tools.OutputReaderThread.run(OutputReaderThre
    ad.java:26)
    But when I uninstall DS5.2, I can install DS5.1 sp3 successfully.
Please tell me how I can solve the problem.
    Thanks!

You are correct. Dir 5.2 is not certified for AIX 5.2. It does install though. Like a previous reponse stated. Check the permissions for the user you are installing with and the file system you are installing to. Make certain you have enough disk space. My install took 150 MB of disk space. Finally, Dir 5.2 creates the file "/var/adm/sw/productregistry" during install. If you do not have permissions to /var/adm/sw, you may have troubles.

  • Directory Server setup issues.

I recently installed the new OS X Server on my new iMac. I have two iPhones, two iPod touches, the iMac and an Air that I want to serve. I registered macserved.com and have a static IP. As far as I can tell, the domain and DNS is set up correctly (to serve internal DNS). I had a wordpress blog running for a while and can access it both internally and externally. MySQL was a pain in the butt to configure, but I figured it out. When I started the config for Profile and OD however, I get this error:
An error occurred while configuring iMac as a directory server. Please check your network configuration and try again.
So I first checked my hostname:
    Primary address     = 192.168.0.6
    Current HostName    = macserved.com
    DNS HostName        = macserved.com
The names match. There is nothing to change.
    dirserv:success = "success"
    A little dig output:

I'm not certain it is a DNS issue, but I'm fairly new to DNS setup so I cannot rule it out.
Where should I start looking? What should I be looking for in the logs? I'm cool with scraping everything and starting over as well. Right now I have zero invested in it (no files that need saved, etc) but I would PREFER not to reformat/reinstall OS X though.

I figured it out! My certificates were hosed. I rm -rf the Authority in Library/ and recreated the certs after DNS was setup properly. Works great now aside from a few other website issues, but that is another thread :-)

  • Configuring a Directory Server for Digital IDs and Certificates

My company is moving toward using electronic signatures for internal documents. All of the users are on XP machines and have Acrobat Professional 8.0 installed. So far, I've been manually adding trusted IDs for each person who will be receiving signed documents that need to be validated. I'd like to make this a little easier by storing everyone's certificates on a server (Windows 2003) so that people can just go out there and add them all as one .fdf file. What I'm wondering is, what is the difference between doing it this way versus going through Acrobat and configuring a directory server? Will it work either way?
    Thanks!
    Anita

  • Can JRE for Sun One Java Directory Server 5.2 be upgraded to JRE 6.0 Update

I am trying to upgrade jre installed with Sun One Java DS 5.2 from 1.5.0 to JRE 6.0 Updat 16. Is this possible?

I never received any feedback on my question.
I am attempting to upgrade our JRE version (installed with Sun One Directory Sever 5.2) from 1.4 to 1.6. I've installed JRE 1.6 Update 16 and set the JAVA_HOME environment variable to d:\programs\java\jre6 and don't know how to configure the directory server to run the 1.6 java version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Open Directory Server "not responding"

This is strange, and I'm not sure what if anything is wrong...
My server is an OD Master. LDAP, Password Server, and Kerberos all report running. AFP authentication is set to Kerberos (only). Authenticated directory binding is enabled. Client computers are bound to the directory server. They connect via AFP, a ticket is created (viewable in Ticket Viewer), everything works fine (apparently).
However... in System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options, there's a red dot (not Leica) next to the directory server IP, and if I click on Edit it says "The server is not responding". This is the case for all client computers, not just one. Not sure when it started; when I set it up they were all green of course.
So, what does this "server is not responding" mean? Given that clients can do everything they need to do, can/should I consider this a non-issue?

Thanks Classic and Chris. Good questions.
The server isn't behaving as expected. Following Classic's suggestion, I tried binding without SSL. I didn't expect it to work, I thought SSL was required. (Under OD Settings/Policies/Binding, "Encrypt all packets (requires SSL or Kerberos)" is checked.) But with SSL unchecked, I was prompted for diradmin username/password. I entered the correct credentials, but they were rejected. So I tried leaving the credentials blank. That bound the client to the directory successfully (green dot). But "Enable authenticated directory binding" is checked.
With the green dot, I tried connecting to the server over AFP, but could not. Only when I manually copied in the Kerberos file was I able to successfully connect to AFP. (Shouldn't the Kerberos file be created automatically at some point?)
So, clearly something is wrong with SSL, and also perhaps with my settings. (The server should only allow binding with authentication and over SSL, but it does not, and it does allow unauthenticated binding without SSL.)
OD Overview confirms that Kerberos is running. Not connected to an AD domain (nor should be).
Running the kadmin.local command gives me a very long list of items that look like e.g. service/[email protected] or service/LKDC:[email protected] One of the services listed is "afpserver". (There are also listings for a number of services that aren't run on the server.)
AFP is restricted to two groups; the username I'm using for AFP connections is a member of one of those groups.

The migration guide has step by step instructions, including command line examples, are you using that as your reference?
Your upgrade should be to (at a minimum) DSEE 6.3.1.1.1. Upgrading to 6.0 is upgrading to a release level that has no patches or fixes to the product. There are significant fixes to the migration command line tools. There is a good chance you will run into issues.
You should install and review migration to ODSEE 11.1.1.7.0 (which would effectively be the 7.2 release of the DS).
There is a specific guide for migration and upgrade, which includes migration from DS 5.2 to 11.x
The full documentation collection for 11.1.1.7.0 is here

The specific migration guide is here

See: Part II Migrating from ODSEE 5.2 to ODSEE 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.7.0)
ODSEE 11.1.1.7.0 can be downloaded from here.

  • 11 instances with Directory server Enterprise 6.3

Hi all, I plan to install the Directory Enterprise server 6.3 with 11 instances. only 1 on the instances will be updated/modified, the rest of the instances are for Querying onl. the directory server will be running on a sun server with 4 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM. Each instance will hold an average of 55,000 entries.
In your oponion, is a setup like this possibe?
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the reply Chris. This is something I inherited.
there is data for a year on each instance. and each instance is running on a seperate port. so slapd-server-1 is running on port 1999, because it has the archived data from 1999, slapd-server-2 is running on port 2000 because it has the archived data from the year 2000. Here is what the instances look like.
    bash-3.00# ps -ef|grep slapd

I actually had to disable theDCSS console because of memory issues. Question, i have not finished with this setup yet, is it best to get another server and split up the instances?
    thanks

  • Old Netscape console 4.2 not working properly with new Directory Server 5.2

After successfully installing Messaging Server 5.2 and applying patch 2, the old Netscape Console doesn't work properly, I tried running the script which is given in the link
    http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6734-10/index.html
which hobbles the server by creating a set of dummy jar files in order for the directory server console not making any changes on the messaging server. At first I got these messages:
Failed to install a local copy of msgadmin52.jar or one of its supporting files: not a ZIP file (END header not found)
I got the same message for these 2 files:
    admserv42.jar
    msgadmin52.jar
After that I made real dummy jar files using a zero-length file I created with touch and I got these messages:
    class com.netscape.management.admser.AdminServer not found
After that I erased all the files created by the script and I get these messages:
failed to install a copy of admserv51.jar or one of its supporting files: null
failed to install a copy of msgadmin.jar or one of its supporting files: msgadmin52.jar not found at http://192.168.10.205:5001/
and for admserv42.jar I get the same message
Does anyone have a clue on what to do next??
    thanks in advance
    Eduardo

The thing is that the netscape console 4.5 won't work properly with messaging server 5.2, and the directory server console is not working properly for the directory server. I already know the limitations about these consoles since it is explained in the doc where the procedure of migrating from a 4.x directory server to 5.1. I

  • Can an email address be a member of an LDAP group even if it isn't associated with an object in the Directory Server?

Can an email address be a member of an LDAP group even if it isn't
associated with an object in the Directory Server?
    <P>
General members of a group are the members defined in the
Directory Server. They are full-fledged members of the group who
may have a set of permissions associated with their membership,
a title, or other attributes. Mail-specific users are users who
are not full-fledged members of the group, but who receive mail
sent to the group. Mail-specific users need not be identified as
a user in the Directory Server--an email address is sufficient.
An example of this is a group of salespeople, all of whom are in
the group "North American Sales Team." They have access to a
sales-tracking database, on-line quota information, and
competitive information. The mail-specific users of this group
are the admins who support the members of the sales team, who need
to get the mail that goes out to the group, but don't need access
to the applications and information that the salespeople do.

    Hey EllyK,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
I would suggest performing this workaround and then try to login to BlackBerry Link:
Open BlackBerry World on the BlackBerry smartphone and sign in using the BlackBerry ID.
Connect the BlackBerry 10 smartphone to the computer.
    Open BlackBerry Link
Sign in using the BlackBerry ID.
Let me know if the issue still persists.
    Cheers.
