Directory Server 6 Server 2003 crash of  bin_ns-slapd.exe

We have a Windows Server 2003 box that has had the bin_ns-slapd.exe crash twice in the last week. The only message I can get on it is this...
Faulting application bin_ns-slapd.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module softokn3.dll, version 3.11.4.0, fault address 0x00019bdc.
Has anyone had this issue? Also, how can I get some more additional information on this crash, I don't see any core dumps or errors in the normal logs. We're thinking of updating to 6.2, but need to test it first.

Thanks for the info. I found the drwatson file shortly after I posted.
I created a few scripts to parse the log files, primarily SSL connections being made, and I found out that SSL 128-bit RC4 resulted in almost no issues, but SSL 256-bit AES-256 resulted in a very high number of Corrupt SSL connections and Timed Out connections. Could this be a server issue or a setup issue?
We are planning to update the servers Sunday to 6.2, hopefully the patch will resolve it.

    Hi,
What error message do you get ?
    Which OS ?
Is this a fresh install of 6.3 or a patch over existing instance ?

  • Directory Server crashing 5. SP 1 on Solaris 9

    Hi,
I have two problems at the moment. My first one is my directory server is crashing in a fairly regular basis. Basically the process just disappears at random intervals. It is 5.1 SP1 running on Solaris 9 on a Sunfire 280R.
    OS = Solaris 9 s9_58shwpl3 SPARC
Copyright 2002 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
    Assembled 15 April 2002
Solaris 9 Maintenance Update 2 applied
    Kernel is 112233-03.
I have quite a few other boxen running Solris 9 on ultrasparc 2 hardware with no problems.
    Any ideas?
My second problem is that I am trying to replicate via a multi master configuration to another instance running on an E250. Same spec OS and patches.
When I initialise the E250 it seems to go through, OK but some data is missing and I am seeing log entries like this on the 280R.
[28/Feb/2003:15:07:30 +1300] NSMMReplicationPlugin - IsValidOperation: NULL entry uniqueid

[28/Feb/2003:15:22:45 +1300] NSMMReplicationPlugin - IsValidOperation: NULL entry uniqueid
I have no idea what these mean but it looks to me like there is a problem with some entries that it is trying to replicate and this is hindering it. So my second directory is missing some entries that the primary directory has.
Any ideas on either of these things?
Should I upgrade to 5.1 SP2 which I believe is out now?

By the way. That is 5.1 SP 1 not 5. doh.

  • Can't turn off old 2003 server (exchange crashes)

    Hello all
    we have installed a new server (2012R2) with 2 VM's (DC 2012R2, Exchange 2010 on server 2008R2).
the migration has went through perfectly, but now we need to kill the old 2003 server.
when we disconnected the old server from the net there were no emails in the organization.
    we tried:
removing global catalog from server 2003 (the exchange console crashed)
tried to set in exchange shell preferred domain controller (it changes for the shell session) but changes right back when closing the shell.
we are bit struggling right now, i would appreciate any ideas

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
If i understand you correctly, you want to remove the old domian controller from domain.
For the AD migration, I think you  need to run a Metadata Cleanup to remove the DC.
For detail information, please refer to:
Remove a Current Operational Domain Controller from Active Directory
    http://blogs.msmvps.com/acefekay/2010/10/09/remove-a-current-operational-domain-controller-from-active-directory/
For the exchange migration, according to the following article:
“You can run Exchange Server 2003 on either a member server or on a domain controller. After you install Exchange Server 2003 on a server, do not change the role of the server. For example, if you install Exchange Server 2003 on a member server, do not
use the Dcpromo tool to promote the server to a domain controller. Or, if you install Exchange Server 2003 on a domain controller, do not use the Dcpromo tool to demote the server to a member server. Changing the role of a server after you install Exchange
Server 2003 may result in loss of some Exchange functionality and is not supported.”
For more detail information, please refer to:

  • Active Directory not working Windows Server 2003 R2

    Hi,
Like the subject said my root problem is either my Active Directory or DSN server. In order to properly explain the situation I will have to make the full Story. I was contacted by a family member to help
out a Non profit organisation with there server problem. Their current config is Windows Server 2003 R2 Running DC,AD,DNS,DCHP,File Services( i know is not efficient).
Here is how I come in to play, prior of me helping the had another server running same spec started having hardware failure and the invested in a new server. The person that set it up did replicate the server
on the new one as far as AC and Domain controller but nothing else. We ll now the DC01 failed and no user cannot login into a new computer
or if a new employee will try to added the changes don't take effect. Seeing the situation I went for the basic and seize fsmo roles to the new server. Perform Metadata clean up. Configure the DC02 as Master Domain Controller. Now everything
is set up and running but still No new user can be added or any exiting can log in
a different computer. At this point am out of answer I try everything I found in the forum. Am almost to the verge of deleting all and start
from scratch me knowing all config. Sorry for the long story am not good on resuming stuff. Please let me know If I need to add any other detail
    I repeat DC01 is DEAD...
Also when a new user try to login or an existing user try to loging they get the system cannot log you on now because the domain is not available

Not Sure if this is the info requested but I ran the commands

  • Can't connect to Small Business Server 2003 via Active Directory

I have done lots of searching, both in these forums and the wider internet, and cannot find a solution to my specific problem.
I am trying to connect my G5 (10.3.9) to a Windows network. We have a Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 with Active Directory. The PCs have no problem using this, and I can connect to shares setup on the server via AFP.
But I am having problems when I try to configure the AD plug-in in Directory Access on the Mac. When I click 'Bind', I enter the Server's Administrator username & password and when I click 'OK', it gets to Step 3 of 5 "Verifying Credentials". It ticks away at this step for about 30 seconds, then comes up with error message saying "Invalid user name and password combination."
I have tried other users with admin privileges, but they don't work either. I know the usernames and passwords aren't invalid, because I created them. I have tried fiddling around with other settings in the AD setup, but nothing gets any further.
Without any other 3rd party software (that's my final option), is there something I need to check/change, either on the Mac or the server, to make this Mac to authenticate via AD? Please help!

Hi Andbrowny, thanks for your response.
Your advice didn't really help my Active Directory problem (AD doesn't require SMB does it?), but it gave me some progress on my SMB problem. I can connect via AFP, but previously when I tried to connect via SMB, it kept coming up with the error "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct".
Now, after changing the policies on the server, I get an error -43 message saying "The operation could not be completed because one or more required items cannot be found."
So now I have two problems! SMB is not finding something it needs, and Active Directory is not "verifying credentials".
Actually, I have three problems: When I am connected via AFP, filenames over 31 characters long are truncated on the server, and I can't copy long filenames onto the server without renaming them. I have read that SMB would fix this to a degree (256 characters for the complete file path), but is there anything (a protocol or software) that allows long filenames to be read/written with ease?
Side note: The server is not 100% configured, the bloke installing it still has some work to do, but Active Directory works for all the XP machines, and I can connect to each XP workstation with SMB.

  • Change the User ID running the SunOne Directory Server 6.3 on Windows 2003

    Hi Experts,
I have an install of SunOne Directory Server Enterprise edition 6.3 running on Windows 2003 server. It was installed using the Zip distribution and is running as a user ID in the Active Directory the server is part of. We are trying to change the user ID to a service account (not the current ID which belongs to a person), so that the Sun DS can run as a service within Windows 2003 server. Need help in doing this without having to re-install the Directory server. Has anyone done this and is it possible to do?

Thank you very much for the insights and the responses sharmy28.
    Appreciate it very much.
All I had to do was change the setting in this file only:
Open the file dsee6/cacao_2/etc/cacao/instances/default/private/cacao.properties and change the below line with new id...
    # Define username and groupname for cacao process
    process.username=sunadmin
    process.groupname=sungroup
As this is Windows 2003 and the installs are all default values, I had to reboot the server for the change to take effect.
The file dsee6/cacao_2/usr/lib/cacao/lib/tools/scripts/globals.cfg does not exist. However the same file exists under the perl directory as globals.pl and the settings you specified are present there. In our case these were commented out and so I left them as is.
Thanks once again for your responses which helped me solve the issue we had.
    Thanks.

    Hi All,
    I Hope you can help,
I am running windows 2003R2 at one of my client sites,
They run with an Oracle 10g database, Application server and reports server.
They also use a 3rd party software for label printing called Loftware or LPS,
For some unkown reason the splwow64.exe process keeps crashing and bring the reports and LPS down,
Can someone try and point me in the right place to look to see why this would be happening,

    Hi,
Based on your description, I suggest you should firstly go to Event Viewer and check if you can find some detailed clues. Meanwhile, please let me know the completed
error message that you can get.
In addition, would you please let me know the Windows Server 2003 R2 that you use is 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS? The Splwow64.exe will load files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers.
Please compare with a normal computer and check related DLL files if all are OK under the folder.
Then please check and update the printer drivers. Monitor if this issue still persists.
By the way, there is a similar question for Splwow64.exe. The questioner provided a solution. Please refer to and check if it’s helpful for your current situation.

  • Sun ONE Directory Server 5.1 SP1 crash

A bug not present in the 5.1 without SP, only in SP1.
    Scenario:
    - Solaris 8 or Solaris 9.
    - Sun ONE Directory Server 5.1 SP1.
    - Changelog enabled with maximun age of 1 day.
    - Retro Changelog Plugin active (needed for the metadirectory access of cn=changelog).
    The LDAP crashes when:
    - You search for a changeNumber <= in cn=changelog and that search does not return any entry.
Something like this will crash de LDAP server:
    ldapsearch -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w <passwd> -b cn=changelog "(changeNumber<=0)"
    Does anyone have experienced this?
    Any idea?

    No. You can try it.
One with changeNumber, only with <= searches, only when the search does not return anything, and only when there has been, at least, a change in the database (that produced a changelog that it is not included in the search).
I cant belive nobody has experienced that.
Do you think that all metadirectories use that kind of searches?. We use Critical Path.

  • Installation steps of Directory Server 6.3 in Windows 2003

    Hi All,
I am completely new to SunOne Directory Server.
Can anyone please tell me how to install "*Directory Server 6.3*" in Windows 2003.
Have downloaded the file from sun's site named "*DSEE.6.3.Windows-X86-full*".
    Thanks.

    Hi etst123,
Thanks a lot for ur reply.
I have already gone through the site you have given and performed the following steps, pls correct me if I am wrong:-
1.) Downloaded the patch for Windows - (126753-04)
2.) After downloading the patch i got the following folders
         a) DSEE_Directory_Editor
         b) DSEE_Identity_Synchronization_for_Windows
         c) DSEE_ZIP_Distribution
         d) Legal
    3) I am trying to install in "To Install Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 From Zip Distribution"
    4) After this i ran - "dsee_deploy install -i install-path options" in "c:\dsee" folder
Its installing without any error telling
"You can now start your Directory Server Instances
You can now start your Directory Proxy Server Instances"
To start Directory Server Instance have followed the below steps:-
    1) C:\tmp\dsee63\DSEE_ZIP_Distribution>cd \tmp\ds63
    2) C:\tmp\ds63> set PATH=c:\tmp\ds63\ds6\bin;c:\tmp\ds63\dsrk6\bin;%PATH%
    3) C:\tmp\ds63>dsadm create /tmp/instance
    4) C:\tmp\ds63>dsadm start /tmp/instance
-Modify the ds-start-tls-enabled attribute that is stored in the directory server configuration.
5). Create a file, say c:\tmp\modify.ldif which looks like:
    dn: cn=config
    changetype: modify
    replace: ds-start-tls-enabled
    ds-start-tls-enabled: on
6). Issue an ldapmodify command something like this:
    C:\tmp>ldapmodify -h localhost -p 1389 -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w password < c:\tmp\modify.ldif
7). Confirm modification via ldapsearch command:
    C:\tmp>ldapsearch -b "cn=config" -h localhost -p 1389 -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w password "cn=config" ds-start-tls-enabled
8). Stop and restart the directory server instance
    C:\tmp\ds63>dsadm stop /tmp/instance
    C:\tmp\ds63>dsadm start /tmp/instance
9). Try creating a suffix with the standard port (1389): (This is where i am gettin error)
    C:\tmp\ds63>dsconf create-suffix -h localhost -p 1389 dc=example1,dc=com
    Error= The "create-suffix" operation failed on "localhost:1389"
    Please help....

  • Active Directory 2003 and Sun One Directory Server 5.2

I just installed Sun One Directory Server 5.2 on a Linux machine. I want to configure LDAP on that machine so that it can be authenticated on Active Directory 2003. How do I go about doing this?

Active Directory server is a "directory server" (and kerberos server.) If your linux client authenticates against Active Directory it doesn't have to involve the Sun Directory Server at all. You have several general approaches you could investigate:
    1. Linux client gets accounts and and authentication via LDAP from Active Directory
If you use AD to handle unix LDAP authentication (opt 1) you may need to extend schema in AD to add the unix password field. I haven't tried it yet, but hope to.
    2. Linux client gets accounts from AD LDAP and authorization from AD Kerberos.
There should be docs on support.microsoft.com on enabling kerberos support for non-Win clients.
    3. Linux client (with samba client installed, with winbind or pam_smb to support unix level services) gets accounts and authentication as a "Windows" client from Active directory "Windows server"
Check the samba.org docn or forums- I think this is a pretty common solution.
    4. Linux client gets account information from Sun Directory server but uses kerberos (against active directory) for authentication.
There should be docs on support.microsoft.com on enabling kerberos support for non-Win clients.
5 Linux client gets account and authorization from Sun Directory server, which the sun Directory server configured to use Active Directory as a Kerberos server.
    Probably incredibly complex.
