DirectoryServices hanging system

Hi,
Since upgrading to 10.6 on my MBP5,2 I have been experiencing frequent near-hangs of the system.
Many already launched apps (esp Safari) get the spinning beach ball and I am never able to launch new apps, but I can move some windows around and often enter new text in them. If I happen to have a terminal already open, top shows me that DirectoryServices is opening ~1 new thread/5 seconds.
sudo kill -9 18 hangs before it prompts me for my password. (18 is the PID for DirectoryServices.) Verify Disk in DiskUtility.app will hang the whole system, even when started just after a reboot.
I am attaching everything DirectoryServices-related from Console.app. I connect to a single LDAP server at my company through VPN, though the problem seems to be unaffected by whether VPN is connected or any user action on my part. (I always have Mail.app open, but the system often hangs when I am not doing anything with it.)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Joe

    >X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging systemA Hey guys,
I'm running 2 GF 8800 GTs (PCIe .) cards on a MSI Eclipse SLI board. My Audigy2 ZS PCI runned fine in this system.
I just replaced the Audigy by a PCIe X-Fi (EMU20K2 audio processor - not the xtreme audio from MSI).
Now I'm dealing with the following issue:
    - System startup is slow
    - in Windows, Mouse is slow, stuttering
    - high CPU-Load
    - very slow system response
!!! Attention !!! I had this problems allready at the st boot with the X-Fi, when the driver from creative wasn't installed (the card was recognized as "HD Audio" bei Windows 7). Installing the drivers didn't help.
If I install only one graphics card, the system runns fine and I can use the X-Fi and it's Software without problems.
If I replace the X-Fi by the PCIe Xtreme Audio from MSI, System runns fine.
If I use Win XP with the two GFX cards and the X-Fi, System runns fine.
    Can you help me?

    User....

    Hi there,
got the same problem if i use my two Nvidia GTX260.
    My system:
    Asus P6T
    I7 920 @ 3,8GHz
    2GB ram
    Gigabyte GTX260 OC Edition
    Nvidia GTX260
    X-Fi XtremeGamer
-System (Win7x64) takes ~0min to start.
    -Stuttering mouse, keyboard everything >.<
Deactivating the onboard sound doesnt help.
Newest Nvidia and Creative driver too =(
The system runs fine without the X-FI and two GTX260 no errors ect...
One GTX260 runs also fine with the X-FI
But two graphic cards and the X-FI..... **bleep** =/
I use debian as my main OS and it run still fine with both graphic cards and the x-fi...
so i think its just a driver problem.
Hope it will be fixed soon =/
If someone have any sugestions...please help us.
    Greetings from Germany also =D

  • Error reported from DirectoryService hangs syslog and computer

I am getting an odd behaviour from my Mac. I recently had an issue with Eclipse and had to hard switch the computer, since it hang all the machine.
When booting again, whenever I start Eclipse, I get the same behaviour. CPU gets high, to 80-90%, processes DirectoryService and mDNSResponder are the most active, and messages starts to run to the syslog. The message is:
    ++++++++++++++++++
    Dec 3 16:37:20: --- last message repeated 499 times ---
    Dec 3 16:37:20 machine DirectoryService\[ 11 \] : * process 11 exceeded 500 log

    Dec 3 16:37:20 machine DirectoryService\[ 11 \] : dnssd_clientstub deliver_reques

    ++++++++++++++++++
It seems the dns service is not operating correctly, but I don't know the cause.

Why is it related to Spotlight? From http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/background-processes.html:
DirectoryService: This process acts as a central clearinghouse for "Directory" information -- mainly users/groups/authentication, and service location (e.g. file servers, printers, etc). It gathers information from a variety of plugins (NetInfo, LDAP, Active Directory, NIS, Bonjour/Rendesvous/, AppleTalk, SMB) and hands it out to whatever program requested it.
I am running Spotlight normally and I did'nt have this problem before. The problem should be something related to DNS, or the like, since mDNSresolver is also generating a lot of activity.
I have 80 Gb free space in the disk.
I have run Disk Utility/First Aid to check for errors and do repairs: no problem, no repairs.
Let DirectoryService etc. run for a while when all is well to re-index for Spotlight: done
Exclude any resources in System Prefs/Spotlight so that time isn't spent combing thru them: done.
Nevertheless, I didn't use Eclipse for a while (these two months) and I almost forgot about the problem. Today, I have just open it again and again, the same problem.

  • ATS files in cache hang system at startup

We have this inconsistent problem happening on all our Mac's (10.4.10). The problem does not happen each day or consecutive days. Here is what happens. Start the Mac in the morning. When it get's past the startup screen and then starts the load the desktop and finder etc. It just hangs. What you see is the spotlight icon in top right but the rest of the menu bar does not show up. None of the desktop icons appear either. If you move the mouse towards spotlight you see it is the spinning ball. What we do then is hard shutdown the Mac then restart in safe boot mode. Once the Mac is running clean out the files in caches for ATS in library, then ATS caches in system/library. Restart the Mac and everything is normal.
Some how this hang up is related to the ATS cache files but not sure how it hangs the system?
Anyone else have this problem? It is causing us a growing frustration some of our operators are leaving the computer running overnight as to not have to deal with the issue when they turn on the Mac.
    Thanks
    Steve

Well, if it is working now...
You could check to see what the version of the Finder is as it is not reported in the crash log. The application is here:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder; the version should be 10.6.7. If you suspect a problem caused by updating to 10.6.6, then I suggest downloading and installing the Combo update.

  • TrueCrypt 6.2 system drive encryption hangs system sometimes a day

    Hi,
I use truecrypt for years with xp and vista - last with Vista and T500, a few weeks ago I installed windows 7 x64 rtm. Every thing works fine and so I checked step by step my usual installed apps and tools.
I see win7 is not supported by truecrypt but seems to work fine. But sometimes (one or two a hour) my system hangs for about 10 to 40 seconds. So I decided to go step by step backwards and removed installed tools.
Removing TC solved my problem. Has anybody seen the same (TC6.2 on Win7 ult. x64 using Lenovo T500 with Intel SSD)?
    best regards
      Ronny

I have exactly the same problem, but with a HP Elitebook 2530p
    TrueCrypt 7.0a
    Windows 7 x64
SSD drive, but had the same problem on my traditional HDD.
The interval is somewhat longer for me, maybe a few times a day.
And, just as you discovered, removing truecrypt system encryption resolves the issue. Wonder if it's an issue with just the system drive encryption thingy, or it affects all systems having encrypted volumes opened?

  • Constantly having to repair disk permissions after hanging system

From the time I purchased this I've had ongoing issues with the java, flash, OS updates causing the computer to hang forever. Sometimes I end up having to press the off button because Command Q and Command/Option/Escape won't allow a force quit even after a 20 minute wait. I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Can anyone see the issue or tell me what I need to do to fix this thing???

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

  • Firefox 3.6.13 would not load under xp on acer computer. deleted in and downloaded version 4, but still does not load, just hangs system. what is wrong?

a couple weeks ago, firefox stopped loading (just hung system) on my acer computer running windows xp. I deleted firefox and downloaded versin 4.0.1. But, the same thing is happening. it starts to load but then stops responding and hangs the system. what is wrong?

I also have this problem and it just started in the last week or so. It seems to be dependent on my home network and the problem only exists with firefox. I have used chrome and IE8 with no issues. I can verify tomorrow that it only exists in my network but one thing I was able to test is that the problem exists even on my linux boot. I am totally dumbfounded with this problem and I can't find anything that will allow the gmail page to load. All other pages I have tried load fine, all be it a little slower than normal but they load. If anyone knows of a difference between firefox and all other browsers on how it goes through the router I would appreciate the info cause I don't know of any differences.

  • Problem installing VXI-8340 on XP (resman hangs system)

I am trying to install a VXI-8340 on my XP system and I can't see any of the devices on the VXI system. It also appears from the device manager that I have some sort of conflict with COM1.

    Erick,
This is my first experience with MXI-3. The previous setup (PCI-MXI-2) worked OK. Resman will hang the system even if only the VXI-8340 is installed in the VXI chassis (I've tried two different VXI chassis).
Here is my hardware and software setup:
Dell Optiplex GX 270 running Windows XP professional
(new computer - I haven't tried it on any others).
    VXI-8340 (copper)
    Kinetic Systems V207, V253
    VXI Technologies 1602
    VXI-1200 (9-slot), Tektronix VX1401 (13-slot)
Measurement Studio Enterprise Edition Ver 7.0
(recently upgraded from MS Ver 6.0)
    Measurement and Automation Explorer 3.0.1
    NI-VISA 3.0
    NI-VXI 3.3.1

  • Install hanging system

I'm upgrading from iLife08 to iLife11. I've had a few problems but the short story is I've installed it successfully once, my system then crashed and I had to restore and now it hangs when I install iLife11 again.
After a few failed attempts to reinstall (it just hangs with 2 mins to go) I've been installing each product one at a time. It seems that it's iWeb that's causing the problem. How can I install it without my system crashing?
    Thanks

I really thought that might do it but no cigar. It got to 'two minutes' and the sliding blue bar carried on for a few more minutes but eventually, near the end of the bar, it stopped, I got the spinning wheel and I heard a sign from the hard drive which I've realised I'm hearing every time - it's almost like a fluttering sound and then stopping, which repeats. I left it in that state for about seven more minutes but it was just looping and I couldn't even bring up the bar at the bottom of the screen or access the apple icon.
The things is though I've run disc utility since the outset and it says the disc is fine, and it's only happening when I'm trying to install this, so I think it's something to do with the software not the hardware.
Not sure what to try next?

  • [915 Series] LiveUpdate 3 Hangs systems at end of Windows XP boot

After installing LiveUpdate 3, my system hangs near the end of XP boot.  Searching the forum, I found one thread related to this - https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=63173.0 but it didn't offer any solution.
Anyone else experience this or have any ideas?  System specs in sig below.

I just posted about this in another thread. Don't have Live Monitor/ Live Update3 load with windows. Live Monitor is the utility on your computer that loads and has that icon in the Notification Tray/Area. If you do then re-install Live Monitor/ Live Update 3 don't have it load with windows. Below is what I wrote in https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=79322.msg561508#msg561508 :

Email MSI tech support about this issue. I've noticed a few posts about the new Live Monitor and a rebooting problem. I don't have this issue, but I don't have it load with windows--maybe that is why I don't. If you still want to update to the newer LiveMonitor/Live Update, do so, then double-click the icon in the Notification tray, usually the lower right-hand side, click configuration, uncheck the box for Launch Live Monitor at Startup, and click apply. You'll have to start Live Monitor(Live Update 3) after windows starts each time you wish to run it. Personally, I don't know why anyone would want this utility to run all the time anyway. Just start it your self, right-click the icon, click Auto-Search, click next, and then finish to get to whatever it finds. You can check it once a week yourself. Anytime you update Live Monitor/ Live Update3 it puts itself back in the startup group. So, you have to change the configuration each time.

  • USB 3 drive falls asleep and hangs system

I have a USB 3 drive and I notice that when accessing files on my internal drive (that is, not the USB 3 drive) it sometimes needs to wake up.  I hear it whirring up to speed and it takes about 5 seconds while the entire system hangs until it comes online and then everything goes back to normal.  This happens while I am already actively using the system.  Any idea why and how to stop this?
By the way, the drive was in a Lacie enclosure, but I moved it to a new USB3 enclosure myself.  It is listed in Disk Utilities as a SAMSUNG HD204UI.  It's 2TB and 7200rpm.  I also have a WD drive in another USB3 enclosure as a Time Machine backup.  It doesn't seem to be causing the issue.

Didn't know that this was a feature of USB specifically.  I actually took my drives out of FW enclosures and moved them to USB3 since that's so much faster.  When you refer to the do not sleep setting, I guess you mean in the Energy Savings settings where you have the tick box to "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".  I unticked that and it seems to be helping, so far!

  • Fglrx: 3D applications either crash or hang system

I have a new Radeon 270X. RadeonSI doesn't work at all even with Linux 3.14 (corruption/black screen even before X is started) and Catalyst barely works. Catalysts, however, works fine on Ubuntu 14.04, as far as I can tell.
The problem is that the applications either crash a few seconds after they are started (1-20 seconds depending on the application), in which case, I see something like:
    [  250.217033] traps: valley_x64[1739] general protection ip:7f16fa40ce67 sp:7fff203f3730 error:0 in libc-2.19.so[7f16fa3d5000+19e000]
or they hang the system. I can still ssh into the machine and I can see xorg taking 100% cpu, but I am unable to kill X or even reboot from there.
I tried Catalyst 13.12 (xorg 1.14), 14.02 (xorg 1.15) and 14.03 (xorg 1.15). The behavior is similar. This is the Ubuntu package that works (seems to be 14.03):
    root@sugo:/# apt-cache policy fglrx
    fglrx:
    Installed: 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu1
    Candidate: 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu1
    Version table:
    *** 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu1 0
    500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/restricted amd64 Packages
    100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Any idea what could be wrong?

OK, I solved the segfaults. After trying a bunch of stuff, including using Ubuntu's kernel, and noticing that a fresh install of arch in a usb stick didn't have this problem, I removed the mesa package in desperation and with it 4GB of dependents. After installing catalyst-test again, the segfaults were gone.
So now I "only" have unkillable xorg processes hanging the machine. This affects Cities in Motion 2 and Metro: Last Light, but not other the unigine demos and its Oil Rush game and Dota 2. If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd appreciate it.

  • ITunes 7.7 hangs system on exit

I never had a problem with iTunes until the 7.7 upgrade.
The system hangs when you exit iTunes.
Is there a solution to this?

    Hi Danewatson,
I am in the same boat...
I have iPods since the 3rd generation and never had a problem with iTunes until I have upgraded to version 7.7.1.
iTunes hangs on exit and make a very high usage of the CPU. I only can go out using Task Manager.
I already uninstall it, clean registry and re-installed it but no improvement. i tried with an old version of iTunes that I had saved but it did not recognized my library, because it was created with a newer version.
In the beginning I thought it was XP problem but I see that a lot of people is having problems with this 7.7.1 version.
I hope they (Apple) upgrade urgently for a new version, as i think thats the only solution, or somebody around knows about other??

  • Text Tool Hangs System

    PS CS5 Extended
    Mac OS 10.5.latest
    Mac Pro
Frequently when I click on the text tool, the spinning beach ball fires up and the entire system hangs. Can not force quit, change applications, nothing. It persists until I shut down with the power switch. What the heck? I know there is an issue when you have an enormous number of fonts installed, but there are only about 250 on the system. That's not large by any means. Other systems in the studio have similar numbers, and have no issues.

If the whole system hangs, you're looking at an OS problem.
It could be caused by corrupt fonts (all it takes is one), or some other system issue (bad files, bad RAM, bad disk, etc.).
Also, Apple has fixed a lot (but not yet all) of their font bugs in MacOS 10.6.5.

  • OCFS2 hangs system on reboot

Has anyone experienced an issue with the system hanging on reboot with OCFS2 mounts still mounted. Config is below, here's what I'm doing. OCFS2 is installed and running with multiple mounts on all 3 nodes. Everything is working fine. I issue a reboot "shutdown -ry now" and they system begins shutting down services. It reaches the point where it begins to unmount filesystems and suddenly OCFS2 starts freaking out with all kinds of errors that it can't reach the other nodes in the cluster and it's fencing itself and panicing, etc. There are start/stop scripts installed with the OCFS2 rpm, and I've tried moving the priority of the ocfs2 kill script up, but it still doesn't work.

xxxspuddy wrote:Are you using any kind of CPU frequency scaling, e.g using cpufreq?  I had a similar issue, if the CPU frequency wasn't set to max I would have to powercycle the box to bring it back to life, but that was a few kernels ago...2.6.25 I think.
Thank you very much for this- My box is doing exactly the same thing now as a result of cpufreq. The below fix took care of the problem. Dirty but it works...
In the future, for anyone else who may have this issue, you can edit /etc/rc.local.shutdown to include cpufreq commands. For example, mine looks like this:
    /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
    cpufreq-set -c 0 -g performance && cpufreq-set -c 1 -g performance
Of course if you only have one core, you would omit the && and anything beyond.
When the computer comes up on the boot process, it checks /etc/conf.d/cpufreq and sets the policy to whatever governor youve selected.
